Hello, I hope you are well 🌹❤️

I am Muhammad Ibrahim from Gaza City 🇵🇸. I am a father of three children. After my house was severely damaged due to the violent bombing, I was displaced to the south of the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the war more than seven times, during which we moved from one area to another under fire in search of safety. We lived in a small tent that did not protect against the heat. Summer, nor the cold of winter, and I lost my job because of the war. My children are living in a state of despair and loss. They have lost their education and their childhood. How bad it feels to be unable to restore... Smile for your children 😞 I ran a fundraising campaign to provide food and water and to collect the coordination price to leave Gaza and start a new life. I hope you will help me by donating even a little 🙏

Darry And Ponyboy In Chapter 1:

“If I had thought about it, I could have called Darry and he would have come by on his way home and picked me up, or Two-Bit Mathews —one of our gang— would have come to get me in his car if I had asked him, but sometimes I just don't use my head. It drives my brother Darry nuts when I do stuff like that, 'cause I'm supposed to be smart; I make good grades and have a high IQ and everything, but I don't use my head.”

"You don't ever think," Darry broke in, "not at home or anywhere when it counts. You must think at school, with all those good grades you bring home, and you've always got your nose in a book, but do you ever use your head for common sense? No sirree, bub.”

Was rereading the book and realized that Pony says/thinks about how he doesn’t use his head and then he gets jumped and then Darry tells him he doesn’t use his head, implying that either:

The main voice in Pony’s mind that criticizes him belongs to Darry bc he thinks either that Darry would say that to him or that he’s already said it to him enough times for him to internalize it to the point of where he’s almost word-for-word accurate compared to when Darry’s chewing him out

OR

That one of the reasons Pony feels so much pressure when it comes to Darry is because he has these shadows or doubts in his mind and yeah they’re there and all, but they don’t take physical form or fully register until Darry goes ahead and voices the thoughts in his mind, making it so much worse for him than if they just stayed as his internal thoughts because now his insecurities and fears are real and they’re more than just him overthinking or overreacting

And Darry’s right, of course; Ponyboy can’t afford to be a greaser who’s got a head not all the way screwed on, but there’s something about knowing that there’s a flaw of his —one that separates him from those who he considers family— and it being thrown in his face right after such a vulnerable moment where he was literally just on the verge of tears, already trying to stay strong and not cry because Darry was there.

It makes it an interesting point in the books, where Pony knows Darry, knows what about himself makes Darry annoyed and can near perfectly envision his reaction, but he’s still an unreliable narrator. It makes it harder to tell what parts are embellishments on his end versus just how Darry is.

Because you can look at the evidence above and take it one way, or you can also notice that Darry didn’t start chewing out Pony until Steve pointed out how he was walking alone. Before that, all he had said was “You’re both nuts.” And then Soda raises an eyebrow at him and he grins.

And there’s so many ways to interpret it:

The frustration with Ponyboy clearly came from a place of worry, but was it also him projecting the anger at himself for not getting there sooner?

Was his annoyance at Pony not taking someone with him a hidden plea for him to please, let him be there, let him help?

Was he originally just worried about Pony’s wellbeing until Steve pointed out his choice to walk alone, and only then did his worry shift to anger, or some other emotion masked by it?

And Darry shoves his hands in his pockets and apologizes after Pony tells him to quit shaking him, which also shows his tendency to hide his true emotions for the sake of putting on a strong face, so his anger at Ponyboy could’ve easily been him scared out of his mind afraid to lose another family member.

But back to Ponyboy’s perspective.

His intelligence, the thing that Darry places so much value on, as well as a trait of Darry’s own that he thinks of nightly, is suddenly used against him again. He brings in B’s? They should be A’s. He brings in A’s? They’d better stay that way. He’s intelligent overall? He doesn’t have an ounce of street smarts, and if he doesn’t want to end up hurt or worse, he’d better wise up.

It’s never enough.

And Ponyboy knows this, he’s internalized it heavily. It’s part of why he thinks Darry hates him so much. And while it might be clear to the audience and the other characters that this is absolutely not true, it’s not too hard to see why he believes it.

“Darry is so misunderstood he’s not a bad brother he works all day to support his brothers and lost his future when he lost his parents AND he has to fill the gap they left while staying strong for Soda and Pony etc etc”

Yes BUT consider that even with all of the effort and strain that is placed on him —alongside the clear love that he has for his brothers— that Darry is not without fault!! To say he’s a bad brother may be an exaggeration, but he is still flawed, and that’s what makes him such a great character, so by ignoring those flaws takes away from his depth and from his personality.

He’s distant (both physically and emotionally) and a bad communicator, and that leads to Pony thinking he hates him. Pony doesn’t share nearly as much with Darry as he does with Soda because he knows that he just won’t understand, and it leads to this disconnect between the two that could be fixed if they just talked about it but they don’t.

Imagine how many arguments the two of them had to have fought for Soda to break down. One of the only boys in the gang who doesn’t use substances and yet who can still get high on life, and one who understands and listens to others and tries and tries and tries to get the only family he has left to just stop fighting and try to see things from his brother’s perspective for once.

Consider “He doesn’t understand anything that is not plain hard fact.” and how Darry probably doesn’t even understand how much he’s hurting his brothers. The only reason he works so hard is to keep a roof over their heads and he’s sacrificed so much for them and he’d do it again in a heartbeat. He helps out around the house and makes sure that Pony’s doing alright in school. Sure, he’s stricter than their parents used to be with them, but that’s just because he worries and he cares. He lets both of his brothers go out and do whatever most of the time, as long as they stay safe, let him know where they’re going, and get home on time, so why is Pony being so difficult? He sees the logical side of things but can’t account for the emotional aspects.

And yeah, he helps Ponyboy with his math homework, but he also pushes him so much academically that Pony feels like his best is never enough and that it never will be.

Darry will always be there to support and love his brothers no matter what, but do they know that? Sodapop has a better grasp of the situation than Pony, but there’s still got to be things he worries about, especially since we’ve seen from his character that he tends to hold things in to keep the peace until he can’t let things go unsaid any longer.

Darry can’t fill the gaping chasm that his parents left and it’s unfair to place blame on him for not being able to do so, but it makes for so much more of an interesting conversation when his flaws are actually addressed instead of him just being called misunderstood if someone says he’s a bad person or brother and leaving it at that, or saying that “Yeah he’s flawed but look at everything else he does”

Ponyboy and “Staying Gold.”

Johnny’s last words to Ponyboy are interesting, especially considering everything the audience has learned so far about said words: “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold…”

Why does he say that when the only time Pony told him about the poem it was about how that’s not possible? “Nothing gold can stay.” He takes the poem and goes against it.

Furthermore, every other “gold” thing has fallen victim to this rule:

- The sunset the two of them had watched ended, as well as the fact that it was the last one that Johnny ever got to see and enjoy.

- Pony’s mother was golden and then both her and his father passed.

- Mickey Mouse (Sodapop’s horse) was a dark gold and then he was sold and taken from Soda.

- Soda’s eyes were described as gold, and one could say that his breakdown at the end of the book was an ending, but that could be stretch. Another thing is that S. E. Hinton herself said that for Soda’s future, she envisioned him getting drafted in the Vietnam war and dying there, which could also symbolize it.

But Ponyboy stays gold.

Even though he’s noticeably tougher and more rough than before, he hasn’t completely hardened himself the way that Dally had. Even though the Ponyboy at the end of the book would threaten some Socs with a broken glass bottle and make good on it if they didn’t run, he still takes the time to pick up the broken glass off the street so that people don’t get flat tires.

That scene is so important to his character because it shows that despite all of the confusion, the stress, and the mental, physical, and emotional toll, on top of the death of not one but TWO of his closest friends, he still isn’t a bad person.

What separates him from Johnny is that he had people there for him in his time of need. Every Single Time. He had a loving home life with his parents and brothers, and even when his parents were gone, he was still close with his brothers and could rely on them. When he got jumped at the beginning of the book he had the gang —especially Darry and Soda— to save him. He had Johnny when Bob and Randy were trying to kill them. He had Dally to go to when they were trying to run away, as well as to protect him during the church fire, both literally and metaphorically. It was Dally’s hand that physically slapped him to get the smoke out of his lungs and it was Dally’s jacket that prevented him from getting the worst of the flames.

There’s also a fundamental difference between him and the other greasers. One that makes him see the beauty in sunsets —something that not even Johnny cared for until Pony pointed them out to him— and prevented him from using a busted up bottle to fight off the Socs at the beginning of the book. His aversion to fighting and his ability to sympathize with the Socs, even the ones who played a huge hand in this entire mess (Randy).

He’s smart as well, which is another thing. Both Pony and Darry are intelligent and athletic, and had a promising future after school. There are many similarities and parallels between the two, but the reason why even if they had gotten the same exact upbringing they wouldn’t be the same is stated right at the beginning of the book in chapter one. “He doesn’t understand anything that is not plain hard fact. But he uses his head.”

When Two-Bit comments on how Darry would be a Soc if it wasn’t for them, he meant it. What separates Darry and Pony —even though they are already different from your average greaser— is that Darry is a greaser only in name and status. Ponyboy has heart— something that is scorned by Darry, at least at the beginning.

Ponyboy has qualities that make him unique from both Greasers and Socs, and even though he’s young and his perception of things is definitely not completely reliable or accurate, he’s still managed to separate himself from everyone else.

Ponyboy is different, but time and time again he is protected and cared for and loved, and that is what I believe separates him from others and allows him to truly “Stay Gold.”
