Good Omens Fic Rec List 12a

Ahoy, mateys! This is the first of a two-part special edition featuring pirates. Naturally, all E-rated fics are guaranteed top Crowley/bottom Aziraphale.

1. Ten Fathoms Deep on the Road to Hell by @aziraphalelookedwretched Link:  https://archiveofourown.org/works/21823051 Rating:  G Word Count:  2,575 (one-shot) This is a simply lovely fic where Crowley comes to his angel’s rescue. Aziraphale has been assigned by Heaven to be a captain in the Royal Navy and he hates it. So, so much. The crew despises him for not being tough enough and the work is drudgery. Sighting Crowley’s pirate ship is a relief, particularly when it’s shown that they have a hostage, and Crowley’s willing to make a trade in exchange for someone valuable, someone of high rank, someone like, say, a captain. I was as relieved to see Aziraphale get off that Navy ship as he was!

2. A Man Upon the Land by lilyaceae Link:  https://archiveofourown.org/works/18385709 Rating:  T Word Count: 3,568 (one-shot) Human AU. This is a gem of a story, in which Aziraphale is a selkie searching for his missing coat, and Crowley the ship’s captain helping him in his travels. Aziraphale has hidden his true nature, but he can’t hide the growing love in his heart for the handsome captain, and Crowley harbors the same feelings for his mysterious passenger. Just as Aziraphale is in reach of his goal, pirates charge in to wreak havoc, and Crowley can’t understand why Aziraphale is so determined to risk life and limb for…whatever it is he’s looking for. This story was published before the show aired, so the physical descriptions are a little bit different from what many of us have become used to, but Aziraphale is still plump and lovely, and Crowley handsome and dashing, so it’s all good.

3. To the Victor Goes the Spoils by @quefish77 Link:  https://archiveofourown.org/works/21142742 Rating: E Word Count:  4,356 (one-shot) Aziraphale and Crowley indulge in some pirate roleplay, complete with swordfighting, and culminating with sexy times in a miracled ship captain’s private quarters. They really get into their roles here as fellow pirate captains, playing around with a story of Aziraphale’s invention. Swordplay follows, and to the victor, namely Crowley, goes the spoils. And he has some very particular favors to ask of his defeated rival. Some excellent smut ensues.

4. Cast Away (And Picked Up) by @zaxal Link:  https://archiveofourown.org/works/29158977 Rating:  E Word Count:  2,526 (one-shot) Aziraphale has been marooned on an island for over a year, but he makes the best of it, enjoying it as a much-needed holiday, when he is rescued by pirates. And who should be captain of the ship, but Crowley, much to the delight of them both. After they put on a little show for the benefit of the crew, of captive-promising-the-captain-whatever-he-wants, they retire to the cabin, and because they’ve missed each other dreadfully, Aziraphale delivers on his promise to both their satisfactions. Hot and steamy!

5. Sail Home to Me by @sad-wendigo and @unproblematicme Link:  https://archiveofourown.org/works/22699897 Rating:  E Word Count:  21,284 (5/5 chapters, complete) Human AU. Aziraphale is a scholar, until his island his attacked by pirates and he’s captured. To his surprise, the captain is his long-lost sweetheart Crowley, who has become a fearsome pirate. He’s under the impression that Aziraphale left him while Aziraphale is equally convinced that it was the other way around and Crowley is the one who left. Turbulent emotions flare as the former lovers re-ignite their passion and revive old quarrels, leading Aziraphale to flee and Crowley to pursue. Stubborn feisty Aziraphale, commanding and fierce Crowley, they perfectly complement each other. Riveting and passionate, with a  secret from the past revealed which changes everything.

Crowley’s Roman Look is Very Strange

image

I didn’t. I didn’t want to be this person. But Aziraphale is sitting RIGHT THERE looking like A TOTALLY RESPECTABLE Roman citizen circa 40 AD. Maybe the hair might be unusual, but the Romans LOVED blonde hair. They thought it was cool and foreign and exotic in sort of a sexy way.

But Crowley is so historically confused. And I think the production design is too good and Neil Gaiman is too on top of his game for this to be accidental. It must mean something.

I - HAIR

image

What is on your head Crowley. Are you the emperor? Are you a victorious general currently participating in a victory parade?

Sure, you sometimes see laurel wreathes in portraits. But FUNERAL portraits.

image

That crown is a symbolic thing, to celebrate your victories in life. It’s not STREET WEAR.

And okay. It’s 40-41 AD. Caligula is emperor. Military chic is in. If you’re a guy, you’re wearing your hair short and un-styled (LIKE AZIRAPHALE.) Those dramatic little spit curls wouldn’t show up until at least Nero.

image

But actually, pulling back for a second - are you appreciating the absurdity that is this hairstyle? Because it took me a second to notice that only the FRONT HALF is curled.

image

Which is a Roman hairstyle. But it’s a Roman LADY hairstyle.

(It tends to get called ‘Flavian Hair’ because the Flavian era ladies of the 70s-90s got pretty extreme about it, but you still had less… dramatic versions in the 40s.)

image

That’s you, Crowley. That’s your style reference. Honestly, if you had just kept your hair long everybody would have thought you were a cool barbarian chieftain or something.

II - CLOTHES

The black is fine. It’s eccentric, but fine. Romans wore black. Wearing black was Cato the Younger’s *thing.* It gets associated with mourning and/or protest, but it would have been really visually confusing to have Crowley wear some other color. This gets a pass.

Nope, my question is about his articles of clothing. There’s a charcoal grey garment that seems to be a toga + undershirt. It’s looped over Crowley’s arm, which is a classic toga give away.

image

That part’s fine. But over the top, he’s wearing a true black… short cape? Shawl? it’s really hard to tell, because whatever it is, he is NOT wearing it correctly (is it folded in half?) Also, that irregular red zigzag pattern is very strange and I do not recognize it from anywhere. Seriously, I can’t even decide on a continent for this garment.

III - JEWELRY

Emperor Nero usually gets credit for inventing the first sunglasses, after he started watching gladiators fight though a green gemstone. He won’t be emperor for about ten years. But hey, he probably got the idea from somewhere. And dark glasses are just a really sensible way to hide your snakey eyes. This is also the first time we see Crowley put up some proper emotional barriers, so it’s a good place for the glasses to be introduced. (@theladyzephyr has a wonderful meta that goes into a lot more detail here.)

So the sunglasses are good. BUT THAT BROOCH.

Okay. This is Aziraphale wearing a fibula plate brooch

image

It’s a really Roman style, and a really Roman shape (a “pelta”)

image

I’ve never seen one that looks like angel wings, but a Roman citizen is going to look at that and see a soppily patriotic Imperial Eagle. How nice that this lovely man from Germania/Greece has made some money and become such an exemplary citizen!

But Crowley is wearing a penannular (pin-and-ring) brooch

image

That’s not roman. That’s a style from the British Isles (Irish, Pictish, Scottish, Welsh.) It says barbarian, boonies, outskirts of the civilized world.

image

And nobody @ me with pictures of pin-and-ring brooches from Rome. Those are small, cheap, and undecorated. They’re the cultural equivalent of safety pins. This is patterned like a snake, and it’s the size of Crowley’s palm.

image

AND THAT’S ANOTHER THING. They didn’t do snake-themed jewelry in the British isles. Snakes didn’t have the best cultural associations there, and there weren’t too many of them there to begin with. This isn’t something Crowley picked up because “hey, a snake, cool,” and then got attached too. This must have been commissioned special.

But you know who LOVED snake jewelry?

ROMANS.

image
image
image

Romans associated snakes with healing and rebirth - clinics sometimes had lil snakes crawling around on the ground to give the place good vibes.

You cannot tell me that Crowley could have existed in Rome for any length of time and not picked up some of this jewelry. Which leads me to my conclusion:

IV - CROWLEY IS EXTREMELY NEW IN TOWN

The unfashionable pin and hair? The clothing draped the wrong way? The cultural colorblindness of wearing a laurel crown when you’re not supposed to? Crowley looks like a tacky tourist because he is one. He’s not staying here long, he “just nipped in for a quick temptation.”

He’s in a bad mod because he’s had an awful day, everyone keeps looking at him funny, the temptation was a complete bust, he has culture shock, and now he’s just trying to get a drink. But they don’t have any PROPER drinks like ALE or MEAD here, so he just orders “whatever’s drinkable.” He’s even not sure what they drink in Rome.

But then Aziraphale shows up and invites him to lunch some place fashionable. So everything’s going to be okay.

Finally! My #dtiys Pride Piece Is Done!

Finally! My #dtiys Pride piece is done!

AHHHHH!!! I AM SO EXCITED TO BE DOING MY FIRST DTIYS

(Do This In Your Style)

I worked crazy hard on this, and I hope you like it. It is a love letter to my community. I love you all so much, you are all gorgeous flowers and you mean so much to me. I know it’s not super traditional in terms of Pride presentation, but it comes from a very earnest place. Six flags are represented by the six flower varieties - ace anemones, pan cosmos, trans astilbe, enby irises, genderqueer blue seaholly, and bisexual hydrangeas. All of these are flowers I love dearly and have growing in my gardens. I know I wasn’t able to cover all the flags - and I am sincerely sorry for that. I only had so much space in the frame and time to work on the piece. For those of you participating in the dtiys, feel absolutely free to switch out any of the the colours/flowers/etc to make the piece more you. I can’t do alllll the flags, but between us all we can!! There will be a prize (possibly prizes?). The deadline for the prize draw is July 31st 2021. I’ll draw a name (maybe names) randomly from everyone who enters by that date. Make sure to tag me so I don’t miss it! I can’t wait to see what you do 💙💚💛🧡❤️💜🖤🤍🤎

Check Out This Fan-Made “Good Omens” Title Sequence

With a TV mini-series based on Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s Good Omens still in development (recently confirmed by Gaiman himself on Twitter), this “book title sequence” made by Ariana T. on Vimeo gives us a tantalizing idea of what we might expect. A motion graphics assignment for school based on her favorite book, Ariana used After Effects and Photoshop to put this visually striking video.

When The Danger Is Gone, It’s Time For Debauchery!

When the danger is gone, it’s time for debauchery!

From memorizing Georgette Heyer novels to waltzing his way into the Bastille in his prettiest outfit, Aziraphale loves a romantic rescue. What better excuse to give into his fantasies than thanking the demon he loves!

And Crowley is happy to indulge his angel’s damsel in distress routine. Whether it’s something simple like saving Aziraphale‘s coat, risking discorporation saving him during the Blitz, or even in the future (Season 2?), Crowley always saves the day with flourish!

Danger & Debauchery is a Special Edition Zine. Like our other Zines, this issue will be kink friendly, however this issue we’re opening up to erotic romance as well. We’re hoping for a mixture of sensual romance, hedonistic pleasure, and kinky fun!

VAMPIRE ROOMMATES DTIYS - Celebrating 1.7K Followers on Twitter!

The results are in and the vampy boys have won! There will be prizes for 2 winners!

I started of thinking about making some kind of family portrait for them, giving them that whole “gay Victorian photoshoots” you know?

Then I started thinking about that damn Dorian Gray picture that warps when the guy started getting evil. Our boys are by no way that evil, but the concept of hiding something in plain sight interested me.

This is also the first time I go spitballing hard with this coloring method. So I hope it’s to your liking. The “dark” version might be what Crowley’s associate, Anathema, sees. She suspects that the painter might have been eaten.

So for the rules, you can choose either version to start the DTIYS with! As long as the theme matches the original piece, it counts. Pose and clothing can change.

When posted on social media, you must tag me @Ran196242 on twitter/tumblr or @callus_ran on insta. It will go on from July 2nd, and will end on Oct 2nd.

So what are the prizes? First place will get a whole set of art print and stickers belonging to this AU + sth secret, and 2nd price will have special sticker sets of the vampy boys!

Just follow the rules below to participate. Have fun!

Aziraphale is right on Armageddon

I’m not entirely sure how posting/reposting on Tumblr actually works, so I’m making a post of what was originally a response to this excellent post by ileolai I really think that Aziraphale is given quite a hard time for how he handles things in relation to Crowley leading up to the Apocalypse.

In defence of my BAMF boi Aziraphale (referring to the TV series as I don’t remember all the differences in the book):

No, he shouldn’t have told Crowley at the bandstand that they aren’t friends/are over, he should have told Crowley when he knew the location of the Antichrist, and he might have been naive to think that he could change the minds of God/the Metatron/a higher authority. I hate that he lies to Crowley after figuring out the location of the Antichrist.

Crowley’s (admittedly desperate) plan, however, was romantic af but not any better morally or much worse practically. It would not have worked long-term. It would have been selfish, short-sighted and cowardly and gone against everything they stand for and believe in.

If they HAD actually escaped (for all they know, at least, discounting Adam’s choices), Armaggedon would still have gone ahead, the War would’ve taken place, and one side or the other would have won. The winning side would realise either straight away or eventually that one of their own had deserted from the war. Whether the next day or in a few millennia, eventually, surely, someone from the victorious side would have come across them somewhere.

Aziraphale Is Right On Armageddon

(Might’ve taken me three run-throughs to capture the screenshot because I kept getting too caught up in watching the scene.)

Also, again, there’s the sticky moral issue of the two abandoning Earth and all the creatures thereof to the sole custody of either Heaven or Hell. The world would have ended, Crowley and Aziraphale would have been together, yes, but always looking over their shoulder, and only for a limited time until they were discovered and punished for desertion/their relationship.

Now, it seems there were two other things they could actually do. First, Crowley’s other suggestion: Kill the Antichrist, murder a child. Comes with its own lovely set of moral dilemmas #utilitarianism. Not something either is particularly keen on doing, although it is Aziraphale who gives it a go: He IS willing, in the end, all other options exhausted, to kill in order to save them and the world. (Granted, it kind of  makes sense that he should do it; he’d at least be thwarting evil whereas Crowley would be going directly up against “his side”. But still, it’s going directly against the Great Plan.)

The only option that could possibly, potentially, mayyyybe work is to convince a higher-up to actually get the whole Armageddon called off. It’s the only way to save everything - the world, humanity, Crowley, their relationship; the only potential long-term solution. So, he goes to see the Archangels, to get them to either call off the war or (possibly?) kill the Antichrist. Aziraphale tells them some of what he knows, but he is smart enough not to tell his superiors that he already knows where the Antichrist is. He lies to them too and keeps the information to himself until he knows what the Right thing to do is to save the world.

Don’t think I’ve seen this talked about this anywhere: While speaking to Archangels, he also tries out quite a clever plan to help out Crowley, whose massive cock-up and cover-up in the wrong Antichrist fiasco will be found out as soon as Warlock reaches Megiddo: He suggests to the Archangels that Crowley did it all on purpose to trick Aziraphale and keep the real Antichrist safe.

Aziraphale Is Right On Armageddon
Aziraphale Is Right On Armageddon
Aziraphale Is Right On Armageddon

(adorbs)

Aziraphale Is Right On Armageddon
Aziraphale Is Right On Armageddon

He’s not exactly making himself look great here, but it’s worth it if he can convince the higher-ups that Crowley is really a demonic strategic genius who was actually protecting the Antichrist all along.

After the Archangels tell him to piss off and the Bandstand scene (RIP), where he declares that can’t be on their side anymore and Crowley is the one to leave, he tries to get to Gabriel once again, which obviously fails. After Gabriel’s “What are you?”, he looks at him running off towards the bandstand, which is in focus although it isn’t in the rest of the scene and reminds of us him and Crowley, and we get the lovely, romantic (?) “I’m soft”. It’s pretty clear already that he has no intention of fighting in any war (or against Crowley). Then, after telling Crowley’s he’s being ridiculous for wanting to run away (and Crowley saying he’ll run off and forget about Aziraphale), he tries once again to explain why the war shouldn’t happen to the archangel thugs and to get them to see what they, as angels, should be doing and why it is vital that the world (and A and C’s role in it) continue.

Aziraphale Is Right On Armageddon
Aziraphale Is Right On Armageddon
Aziraphale Is Right On Armageddon

He is clearly terrified. The archangels clearly aren’t there with good intentions, and yet he Stands Up to them and tries to make them see reason: They shouldn’t want the war, that’s not what they, the angels are there to do - they should be upholding one side of the moral coin, letting humanity choose between good and bad. (As an aside, I love all the “Aziraphale is terrible at being an angel” fun, but I - and probably god, and possibly even Aziraphale himself - think that he is the best angel: Even with the Arrangement, he has actually been doing the exact job of Heaven and Hell, upholding this careful balance between Good and Evil, allowing people to choose, navigating via his own moral compass, and taking care of humanity ever since giving away the sword, as a good principality should). He’s already saying pretty clearly that he’s on the side of The World, that he doesn’t want the war.

His last hope for actually avoiding the Apocalypse (and saving his and Crowley’s continued existence together) is God herself. Obviously and beautifully, he doesn’t get through, and the Metatron is no better than the other bureaucratic, dogmatic, powerhungry arsewipes in Heaven. He’s exhausted all other options, all hope of a long-term real solution for him and Crowley, and so he calls up Crowley to let him know Adam’s location so that they can go off in desperation and try to stop/kill the Antichrist. It won’t save them, but it might just be possible for them to save the world.

After his discorporation, he takes a very public, burning-all-bridges stand in Heaven and gives a metaphorical two-finger salute as he yeets back to possess people like a demon. He finds Crowley and is very much set on the task at hand - getting to and stopping the Antichrist - even though he and Crowley clearly have a lot of personal shizzle to discuss. At the Airfield, finally, he’s the one who actually does try to kill Adam to save the world.

Also, Aziraphale comes up with the brilliant distinction between the Great Plan and the Ineffable Plan, which implies that Heaven and Hell might be going against God, and that he and Crowley (and Adam) might just under Her protection, and would give Crowley and himself an out if only their bosses were flexible/good enough to see reason.

When it works and Armageddon IS actually avoided, he greets Gabriel coolly and unwieldingly while Crowley tries out a sycophantic (and fabulous) grovelling bow.

Aziraphale Is Right On Armageddon

He has Taken A Stand and he’s not moving. For all that he frets and wiggles, he’s the guardian; constant, secure with a steady, certain inner moral compass that is much too good and intelligent to constantly align with Heaven. Crowley is the snake; wiley, slippery, flighty, constantly moving (and I mean that in the best way, I love Crowley as much as Aziraphale).

He grounds Crowley. When Crowley is finally giving up, saying goodbye to Aziraphale, refuses to give up, knowing exactly how to get Crowley moving again - pulling out another card in his… infinite variety… of ways to surprise and touch and steady the demon.

Morally, it’s like that old philosophy conundrum, the trolley problem with more heartbreak: If you could only save one, would you save your loved one or a group of strangers? When push comes to shove, Aziraphale cannot let himself throw the random bunch of strangers to the wolves, choosing his own unhappiness over the unhappiness of humanity. Add to that the fact that avoiding the Apocalypse is also the only long-term way to possibly save Crowley their relationship. (TV) Crowley is more concerned with saving Aziraphale and himself. Not a bad instinct; a very human one, in fact. His world IS Aziraphale, he moves around the angel, grounds himself in him. Aziraphale’s own happiness and well-being is contingent on Crowley being in the world, but he is willing to sacrifice that to save the actual world. He IS committed to Crowley, it’s just that Crowley can’t be in Aziraphale’s world if the world doesn’t exist. Aziraphale might owe Crowley an apology for throwing him under the cart for this, but he’s a damn good person/being and a really damn good angel.

I was gonna tie this down better to this thought I’ve been thinking a lot, but this got so long that Imma just gesture vaguely towards it, it’s not hugely related to the events of Armageddon: Aziraphale has to be constantly selfless everywhere except for with Crowley. He gets to be selfish in his relationship with the demon. Crowley, on the other hand, can only ever be allowed to be selfless and good through his relationship with the angel. Aziraphale being selfish allows gives Crowley a space to be giving and loving (in whatever way) and kind.

I know there are already lots of lovely fics out there exploring these things in profound and beautiful ways, but I got started on this essay journey, and I was damned if I wasn’t gonna finish it too.

So *sniffs* yeah.

If you are completely down, just watch this.

The Rest of Our Lives - Part 3 In which Aziraphale and Crowley attempts to dance to a rather raspy old tune only for it to end… suprisingly well. This is the last part of our (@eamikkir) collab animations, completed after a very long hiatus skdnv. Thank you so much for supporting us all throughout. Enjoy this little completed piece from the past! Hope you are all keeping healthy!  Part 1 | Part 2 | Xmas  Patreon | Ko-Fi

How do you find a balance between “show, don’t tell” and “readers might not catch/understand this subtle concept or showing it would be too convoluted or more open to interpretation than it needs to be”? It doesn’t help that everyone encourages more showing even if it swallowing little details that are supposed to stand out. Basically, I feel like I overthink my showing as being too tell-y even when it already has several layers of meaning and is already too dense for average readers.

“Show don’t tell” resources & advice...

I think people often mistake the advice of “show don’t tell” as being in the interest of making one’s writing more literary; more “high art” than candid prose typically is. The advice is intended to help one recognize when their prose is becoming dull or unengaging to the reader. Showing is supposed to promote an organically flowing reading experience, rather than turn the writing into a flowery, pretentious, and unintelligible mess. Finding a satisfying way to deliver information in the text that isn’t “I felt” or “I thought” is important. It should never dilute the information. Clarity comes first, and then one can configure the sentence to add as much richness to the reader’s ability to immerse themselves as possible.

If the desire is to show that the character is sad, writing that “she looked down at the floor and wrapped her arms around her own waist” is not going to be any less indicative of that information than “she felt sad”. That is the point of this advice. It is not a way for one to convert information into a code that the reader must analyze in order to comprehend the basic idea of what the scenes are about. This isn’t 1597, and nobody is asking anyone to be Shakespeare.

Density of a piece of writing does not give it inherent worth. Ease of comprehension doesn’t always have to be the number one priority, but it should be a considerable factor when one accounts for their audience and their subject matter. If one is writing a young adult fantasy trilogy, the density of the writing should be adherent to the demographic’s ability to comprehend certain writing styles. “Show, don’t tell” applies to all writing, but different writers interpret it differently, often based on who they’re writing for. If the concept you’re trying to convey to the reader in a subtle manner is not coming across without blurting it out in the text, perhaps the problem isn’t the way you’re describing it, but the concept is weak in its current state.

Easily misinterpreted meanings or concepts are often not the victim of descriptive style, but being underdeveloped sub textually. No important concept can be described once within a dense text and expected to translate as intended into the reader’s understanding. If it’s important enough to the bones of your story and meaning, it shouldn’t rely on the manner of description to shine through. Sometimes the density of a text is a product of too much intentional symbolism or motif. It’s okay to allow some things to be meaningful purely in interpretation. It’s okay to acknowledge that you allowed something that obviously implies meaning to be prescribed its implications by the readers.
