Doing an experiment: I have made a new nonfandomspecific blog for reblogs and conversations and etc. because I've come to be dissatisfied with my general internet persona being tied to the gimmick of 'LOTR character I didn't realize was quite that unpopular until it was too late'.* This blog will be reserved for its original gimmick from now on (such as: reblogging Grond), unless I give up. if you want the url to my new blog send an ask!

LOTR stuff will all stay here.

*there are things I saw when the game came out that I have never quite forgotten. Don't read YouTube comments

Do you have any Fun Facts today? Maybe something literary?

You know what? I think I can manage that. Everyone knows about the friendship between C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. But there's another guy who gets skipped out on, and was super-influential on Lewis.

Today You Learned about Roger Lancelyn Green!

Do You Have Any Fun Facts Today? Maybe Something Literary?

Our boy Robert here was an undergraduate at Oxford when he met Jack Lewis, who was his teacher. After graduating and becoming an Oxford scholar in his own right, he remained very good friends with Lewis and a member of the Inklings. He actually traveled with Lewis and his wife, Joy, on vacation to Greece, shortly before Joy's death in 1960.

If you read histories of the Inklings, you may notice that Tolkien didn't seem to like drafts of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe that much. Well, Lewis's friend Lancelyn Green did, and encouraged him to keep working and eventually publish it.

[Wikipedia also says he came up with the title 'Chronicles of Narnia', but there's no citation on that sentence, so take it with a grain of salt.]

Roger has his own literary career, too. He wrote several books for children, retelling myths and folklore, from Greek myths, to Norse myths, to Arthurian stories. And these books are all still widely available! He's also the author of several literary biographies of people like Andrew Lang (compiler of fairy tale books), Lewis Carroll (author of Alice in Wonderland), J.M. Barrie (author of Peter Pan), and of course, C.S. Lewis himself.

It's actually pretty cool that we have a biography of C.S. Lewis by a guy who was close friends with him, I think!

Also, he was the father of literature scholar Richard Lancelyn Green, but that guy, I think, deserves his own Fun Fact for another time.

A lot of fiction these days reads as if—as I saw Peter Raleigh put it the other day, and as I’ve discussed it before—the author is trying to describe a video playing in their mind. Often there is little or no interiority. Scenes play out in “real time” without summary. First-person POV stories describe things the character can’t see, but a distant camera could. There’s an overemphasis on characters’ outfits and facial expressions, including my personal pet peeve: the “reaction shot round-up” in which we get a description of every character’s reaction to something as if a camera was cutting between sitcom actors.

When I talk with other creative writing professors, we all seem to agree that interiority is disappearing. Even in first-person POV stories, younger writers often skip describing their character’s hopes, dreams, fears, thoughts, memories, or reactions. This trend is hardly limited to young writers though. I was speaking to an editor yesterday who agreed interiority has largely vanished from commercial fiction, and I think you increasingly notice its absence even in works shelved as “literary fiction.” When interiority does appear on the page, it is often brief and redundant with the dialogue and action. All of this is a great shame. Interiority is perhaps the prime example of an advantage prose as a medium holds over other artforms.

fascinated by this article, "Turning Off the TV in Your Mind," about the influences of visual narratives on writing prose narratives. i def notice the two things i excerpted above in fanfic, which i guess makes even more sense as most of the fic i read is for tv and film. i will also be thinking about its discussion of time in prose - i think that's something i often struggle with and i will try to be more conscious of the differences between screen and page next time i'm writing.

I’ve already posted a few of these designs, but just for simplicity’s sake: HERE ARE ALL OF THE REDESIGNS for Golden Bat: Reimagined!

You might notice an extra character you don’t recognize: Priestess Amelia is a cult leader character created by @babblingbrookebutler for the sake of fleshing out the story some, and, well…

…she kinda ties directly into Mr. Dark Bat up there.  If he looks like Golden Bat, gone Berserk Mode… good.

And yes, even Penny got a redesign.  *mutters something about Penny only showing up in 2 episodes and is really just a minor character at best*

Anyhoot, this character design livestream was an absolute delight, and I can’t thank everybody who came out to it enough for all of your wonderful and helpful input!  It’s been a blast, everyone, and I hope y’all enjoy the designs!

Hey there, earthsong! Your Mario AU is pretty intriguing, and I'm curious to see how it keeps developing! Your take on Daisy is awesome, but I was wondering if in this AU there are any other combat sports besides boxing, and if Her Rowdiness is also interested in any of them...

"Her Rowdiness", that's hilarious xD

But yes, there's def more combat sports than just boxing! Kickboxing, wrestling, fencing, dueling, martial arts of all sorts. The one Daisy actually has a career in is Brawling, which is essentially a mixed martial arts sport but moreso in that everyone can use any fighting style they want and not so much the styles are mixed together to create one specific method of fighting. It also involves the use of magic combat so there's that as well.

Daisy appreciates all sorts of fighting styles, hell she's fought against pretty much all of them, so she has a vested interested in them. If not to perform herself, then to learn so she can use her noggin' when in the field. For Daisy though, the most prominent fighting style she uses is probably boxing. owo

On This Day, 7 December 1928, Avram Noam Chomsky, Legendary Activist, Linguist And Author Was Born To

On this day, 7 December 1928, Avram Noam Chomsky, legendary activist, linguist and author was born to a Jewish immigrant family in Philadelphia. Chomsky came to prominence as an activist as an outspoken critic of the Vietnam war, for which he was arrested several times and placed on President Richard Nixon’s official list of enemies. He has since become one of the world’s leading critics of US foreign-policy, and one of the most cited scholars alive. Politically Chomsky usually identifies with currents including libertarian socialism and anarchism, stating: “I was attracted to anarchism as a young teenager, as soon I began to think about the world beyond a pretty narrow range, and haven’t seen much reason to revise those early attitudes since.” And despite dark times, Chomsky believes that we have to face our challenges with optimism: “Optimism is a strategy for making a better future. Because unless you believe that the future can be better, it’s unlikely you will step up and take responsibility for making it so. If you assume that there’s no hope, you guarantee that there will be no hope. If you assume that there is an instinct for freedom, there are opportunities to change things, there’s a chance you may contribute to making a better world. The choice is yours.” Yesterday, WCH was very happy to host the launch of Chomsky’s new book with author James Kelman, Between Thought and Expression Lies a Lifetime: Why Ideas Matter. You can get it, along with our book for which Chomsky contributed the foreword, in our online store: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com/collections/all/noam-chomsky https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1871057279746080/?type=3
