IEYTD Lore #2 Operation: Death Engine (Prologue)

Before the mission

A mission in space?! Agent Pheoness has had some pretty interesting missions but this was another level. It was so nerve wracking that it actually made Agent Pheoness fidgety. As she was signing the papers for the mission, Handler came into her office “Hey, you seem to have a different reaction to the mission than Pheonix.” He says with a soft chuckle. She looks up, he was a sight for sore eyes at this point “Handler…hey…” he smiles at her “Um…I think we can lose the formalities, agent….my real name is Reginald…Reginald Crane.” She raises an eyebrow “Oh? I’m getting real names already?” She teased “Well, I trust you enough.” Trust? That word is very foreign to her and if we’re being honest, it made her heart stir a little. The smallest smile appears on her face “Uh…Pheoness is my real name actually. It’s a name I’ve been called for most of my life…” Handler puts a hand on her shoulder, gently caressing it. He could feel her tense up at his touch, but she slowly relaxes into the touch “I know you’re nervous, Pheoness, it’s a big mission. But I’m sure you and that rascally Pheonix have the intelligence and the strength to defeat Zoe’s death ray, just…don’t die.” Pheoness laughs “Easy for you to say…Reginald.” The sound of the both of them laughing fills the office, creating a tranquil atmosphere. She finishes the last of her paperwork “Okay, just gotta send these to the Director and me and Phoenix would be off to that space shuttle…and hopefully…not die.”

Bluenix stares at the door like it personally wronged him.

Sure as shit, there was a heart decal on the door. Bluenix felt his cheeks warm; why were the others so insistant it was a crush? It's affection and admiration- nothing more. It can't be a crush.

Crushes get people killed.

Nonetheless, he steels himself and enters the room. The black company phone sits there, and it somehow feels like it stares at him. He stares back. It's like that for a good 15 seconds. He breathes. It shouldn't be this hard to call a friend... He dials the familiar number and waits.

A kind, familiar voice answers.

"Phoenix? Phoenix! Oh it's so good you called- where ARE you? You up and left without so much as a note and Reginald's been losing his bloody mind! I've been losing my bloody mind! Are you hurt? I can-"

Woah, woah, Ollie-pop! Slow down a sec.

He chuckles a little.

It was an emergency. Still is. But I'm ok; no scratches or wounds except to maybe my pride.

"An emergency? Phoenix, what's going on?"

Multiversal conundrum: Zoraxis managed to trap a bunch of Agency personelle, and I was recruited to help get them back.

"The multiverse again?"

Yeah. Again. But, uh, I called for a different reason than to just explain.

He shuffles, his firey feathers puffing out unconsciously as he lets out a heavy sigh.

Mechanique is here... She targeted me and I just... Needed to hear your voice. I was doing well on my own for a good bit but well-

He smiles

I missed you.

Ollie worries, but he chuckles into the phone. Bluenix pretends his heart doesn't speed up.

"Well, I missed you too. Medical's been awfully quiet without you around, you know."

Hey! I'm not THAT clumsy!

"I can hear a little nasal in your voice. You ran into a wall, earlier didn't you."

... I plead the fifth.

The two laugh. Conversation flows between the two for a while. Eventually, though, Ollie is needed back in Medical, and the two say reluctant goodbyes.

I'll see you soon, ok, Ollie-pop?

Ollie giggles.

"Of course, Feather. I'll hold you to it."

Ollie hangs up as Bluenix processes everything he just heard; the soft way Ollie called him 'Feather' replaying in his head over and over as he sinks to sit on the ground. He holds his head in his hands as he groans in partial frustration.

He had a crush.

He was so screwed.

you’re going to have to share custody with @warden-draws-sometimes since he asked for JJ at the same time as you but tbh that’s probably a good thing since lil JJ needs constant attention or else he will start destroying the furniture

Ollie did his best to disguise his shock at the invitation. He could somewhat wrap his head around Phoenix being willing to run a mission with him since they’d done it once before (albeit with Ollie having no idea) but this? He certainly wasn’t complaining, seeing as moments ago he thought he might never see Phoenix again due to their infrequent visits to Agency headquarters, he was just confused.

“Reginald’s address is technically classified, so I’ll come get you,” Phoenix was saying as they turned and continued down the hall.

“What’re we watching?”

“It’s Reginald’s choice, so probably a John Juniper flick. Ever heard of him?”

Agent Phoenix: as you know, I keep a list of all my friends in order of how likely they are to betray me. And we've established this.

Reginald: where am I on the list?

Agent Phoenix: well, I can't tell you that because then you'll quickly move up or down depending on your reaction.
