Black-throated Blue Warbler (Setophaga Caerulescens)

Black-throated Blue Warbler (Setophaga caerulescens)

Warm-up for Inktober 2016!

I refilled an old fountain pen for this piece and got ink all over my hands, kitchen, and body in the process. In the end, I decided I prefer using my Chinese painting brushes to the fountain pen, but it was worth a shot!

a wave washes across a beach, foam spelling out the word "EBB"
a patchwork of barnacles and lichen, with inset panels highlighting a barnacle and a barnacle cross-section
fronds of feather boa kelp amidst a flurry of little bubbles
driftwood, bleached and smoothed, against a bright blue sky. an inset panel with the dark ocean bisected by white foam and two soaring gulls
a close-up of swirling foam on water. inset panels show tide charts and the phases of the moon
a swirl of driftwood with small insects hopping off of it. inset panels show closeups of a sand flea
dark rocks wreathed in foam. three inset panels each show a beach-smoothed rock pockmarked with holes
a spiral of coral-like rockweed twists across the page

still very very slowly making art!! i'll have my little 8pg accordion zine about tidepools at seattle art book fair may 11 & 12 -- in slightly different colors because of [fucked up the riso printing process]

An illustration of a hiking guide titled "N2", with information like "Route Type" (Loop) and "Difficulty" (Easy-Moderate) above a low-angle shot of a pine tree. Tags below the image read "Decomposition", "Scenic overlooks", and "Wildflowers". The description is "A casual stroll through one of the classic biogeochemical cycles! The nitrogen cycle is a wonderful next step after the more beginner-friendly water or rock cycles." Ferns cover the page.
Three tall panels of wood grain with holes chewed across them. In the far right panel, a fat white grub squeezes through the holes and out of the panels, next to an oblong beetle.
A two page spread of a textbook excerpt. The section header is "1.3 The Nitrogen Cycle", and diagrams show the nitrogen cycle, nitrogen-fixing bacteria, and ribbon lighting (another source of nitrogen fixation).
A two page spread showing a tree toppled into a bed of ferns. The stump and body of the tree are dotted with small holes. The border of the page depicts the longhorn beetle life cycle, from egg to cocoon to fully grown, and text at the top reads "The Nitrogen Cycle?"
A two-page closeup of a fallen log. Panels across highlight mushrooms taking root and growing across the bark. The border of the page depicts the mushroom lifecycle, from spores to fruiting bodies. A spiderweb is spun down the left side, and a longhorn beetle winds across the page to be caught in it.
Three varieties of nitrogen-fixing plant. A close up of nitrogen-fixing bacteria overlaps roots spreading into rich soil. Panels overlaid on top show sunlight, the veins of a leaf, plant cells, and a growing root system. The border of the page depicts a sunrise and a moonrise, with the nitrogen fixation process along the bottom.
A fallen log, now covered in moss and large mushrooms. Panels across the top show a bee pollinating a flower that then wilts and bears fruit. The corners of the page depict a frog's life cycle, while the bottom shows a slug progressing from eggs to fully grown. A large black bird cuts across the panels and plucks a slug from the border.
A dead bird decomposes, covered by snow then uncovered by spring rain. Panels depict a closeup of earthworms, ferns, crown shyness, and animal cells. The border of the page has wildflowers, birds, and bugs in repeating patterns, along with an intricate repeating knot of worms.
A low angle shot of a forest, with a tree stump in the foreground. Panels overlaid show a blue sky with clouds, planets, and the moon, half-obscured. A birds-eye shot of pine trees swallowed in fog. Panels overlaid show a log slowly decomposing, as a new sapling grows from it. Borders of the page depict stars, earthworms, nitrogen returning to the atmosphere, and slowly gathering stormclouds.
A single panel with a ribbon of lightning curving across it.
Blank page, text reads: shannonkao.com / twitter.com/mellifics

[left: two dark blue trees frame the image, with ferns and brown mushrooms silhouetted along the bottom. a bright pink and yellow forest is visible through the trees. from the left, a school of sky blue and yellow fish swim out of the shadows into the distance. three small ghost blobs watch from the forest floor. right: a dark green tree curves out from the right side of the image, its base overgrown with yellow oyster mushrooms. a school of pink and yellow minnows swim around the tree, moving from right to left. three small ghost blobs watch from the base of the tree and a nearby rock.]

Henryk the Sturgeon Knight Character I made a while ago that started story about fish knight I'm working on (temporarily called "Ashore Project" till I figure out a better name). Will probably do some smalled tweaks to his armor at some point, but I love him very much.
