“I don’t understand,” she said, “I’ve already given you six of my arms, and now you want one more?” The shark looked at her with a friendly smile and said, “I don’t want one. This time I want them all.” “But why?” Nina asked. And the shark replied, “Because that’s what friends are for.”

Tenía frío y no pedía fuego, tenía terrible sed y no pedía agua: pedía libros, es decir, horizontes, es decir, escaleras para subir la cumbre del espíritu y del corazón. “There was this one day back in eighth grade. It wasn’t that long ago, but time felt different back then. Like there was more of it. We spent the morning at Coney island. Afterwards, we rode our bikes through Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Park Slope, Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights, all the way to the Brooklyn Bridge. Then everything changed. Girls, grades, parents, two wars, impending environmental catastrophe, a messed up economy. All these things seemed to come out of nowhere, like on the same day.”
