obviously you know which one would be me.
While I wait for The Sounds show tomorrow, I look ahead to next weekend, when I'll be seeing Brookyln-ites Holy Ghost! open for Aussie synth dance-rock favorite Cut Copy at the Regency Ballroom in SF. Now, this track "Wait & See" seeps with homages to the 80s, completely unapologetically. But instead of ripping the stalwarts like Joy Division and The Smiths, they're taking cues from Information Society and Wang Chung.
Oh my god, I love it, unapologetically.
M83's anticipated double-album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming finally and officially dropped on Tuesday. I must admit, I've been apprehensive. How could the self-proclaimed youth and nostalgia-obsessed Frenchman and mastermind Anthony Gonzales live up to the hype(machine)? I mean, everyone loves that sax solo in lead single "Midnight City"! And Urban fuckin' Outfitters had rights to the first complete stream of the album!
Still, I believe true mainstream success will elude M83. Unless within the year he sells out the Fox Theater(I call it) and every track is licensed to movies, tv, and commercials ala Moby's Play.
Regardless, I will continue to listen to standout track "Steve McQueen" with my fist in the air.
Bon Iver recently released the single "Calgary," which contains on the flip-side a gorgeous cover of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me."
It's unreal good. My mom may just crap her pants.
The Wisconsin band is slated to perform at Berkeley's Greek Theater on September 22.
.Coachella's 2011 lineup was announced this week, and I see the reunited Death From Above 1979 (omg) is on the bill for Sunday. I also see Arcade Fire headlining Saturday(the weakest day admit it). These two bands alone makes me consider the $269 price tag. Then again, the other artists I'm excited about - Cut Copy, Sleigh Bells, The Presets, and Yelle - I'd much rather see in a club. The desert sun is discouraging. I feel parched already just thinking about it. In years past, the annual Coachella weekend in April has proved to be a great time to catch headliners and others here in the Bay, albeit in more comfortable and less expensive fashion. Alas, I'm catching Cut Copy April 16th at SF's Regency Ballroom, the Saturday of the festival. Which btw, I'm extremely excited about, since their leaked new album Zonoscope (out February 8th) is sooo doin' it for me. Listen to the opening track "Need You Now" on the tube. There's a rumor Daft Punk may storm Kanye's Sunday night headlining slot. Although nothing will compete with their Alive 2007 stop at the Berkeley Greek Theater (MOST AMAZING SHOW EXPERIENCE EVER) it may be the icing on the cake for what could be a musically fantastic weekend. I brought up Daft Punk in the first place because a couple ladies who call themselves Pink Is Punk remixed "Derezzed" and it's really effing good. It's better and more satisfying than the original and that's what we like to hear. Ladies outdoin' robots. Ok ok, perhaps persuasion and some high SPF will coax me into a trip to Indio. We'll see.
In other news: Beth Ditto, singer of The Gossip just released a four song EP, teaming up with Simian Mobile Disco for a sassy dance floor jaunt that doesn't sound unlike the dancier moments of The Gossip's recent record Music For Men, which despite being produced by Rick Rubin, was actually pretty dancey. Simian's presence is obvious, with their vintage sounding, yet super clean synths. Lovin' the lead track "Open Heart Surgery." She won't be at Coachella this year. Oh snap!
p.s. i like this. A LOT: The Drums - Me & the Moon (Clock Opera Mix)
ride's "going blank again" on 180 gram double vinyl came in the mail today, just in time for christmas. came in the mail. in the MAIL. and appeared so effortlessly on my coffee table. if only everything this great was always that easy.
I finally caught The Horrors live at Bimbo's 365 Club in SF last week when they co-headlined two shows with The Black Angels. It was a loud, and achingly gorgeous-sounding set in a beautiful venue.
Back in England, where these decidingly throwback shoegazers are from, they're Album of the Year winners(well, NME says) and doing duets of their single "Still Life" with mega fan Florence Welch. It's about as good as you'd hope, which is close to perfection.
the-greatest-hits tumblr does it again.
