thinking about how the best case scenario that elphaba can imagine in the wizard and i is that finally someone will come along who will be able to change everything about her. even in her wildest dreams, she views that as her best option.

and then.

along comes galinda. who - after spending an entire night attempting to give her a makeover - settles on: ‘actually, you’re perfect just the way you are. i wouldn’t change a thing. except maybe to tuck a little piece of myself in with you, just there.’

and i just think that’s neat.

Shimy and Jadina are soooo Girl So Confusing to me. Two sides of the same coin. Both having been so lonely growing up but choosing to deal with it in such opposing ways. Jadina who reaches out to everyone, always, who wants to know and understand everyone she comes across vs Shimy closing herself off. Shimy viewing everything as a competition because that was the closest thing she had to friendship vs Jadina not wanting to feel like she has to prove herself anymore. Both of them hating feeling judged but still doing it to the other. Their judgment towards the other hurting the most because it's coming from another woman. Both of them wanting friendship yet not knowing how to extend it. Is this thing on

It just occured to me that Stan technically canonically liked to draw, so here's my take of what Stanley's sketchbook would have looked like had he never gave up on art :]

It Just Occured To Me That Stan Technically Canonically Liked To Draw, So Here's My Take Of What Stanley's

Stanley first found this sketchbook left behind in a dumpster next to a library. The rings that once held the pages together were broken and warped, so he instead fashioned himself a jury rigged binder by weaveing one of his shoelaces through the holes in the side. In the end, it was essentially just a stack of barely held together paper, but he was still satisfied with it.

Pencils were easy enough to snag from the store since they fit so easily inside his pockets; but he had to settle for the shitty stubby pink erasers that barely did its job on the end of the pencils if he made any mistakes.

Stanley wasn't much of a poetic guy, and he didn't do the kind of art that had deep symbolism or meaning behind them. He was more the kind of artist that just drew what was in front of him, plain and simple. Had he been younger, he might have been able to fill in this cobbled together sketchbook in a matter of days, page after page filled to the brim with creatures and adventures of the wildest dreams.

Well, Stanley wasn't exactly a sprightly young child anymore with a boundless imagination to take inspiration from, but 10 years was a long time to be on the road and moving around, so there was plenty for him to draw.

[Summer of 1971, Kentucky- Natasha Jones. Stanley met her at a small farmers market located in a somehow even smaller backwater town. His fingers were itching for something to distract themselves with from the dull inactivity of the town, and he found his eyes drawn to Natasha lounging behind her fruit stand just across from him. Her body language was languid and loose, like a cat. She hadn't appreciated it when she caught him staring, but was apologetic when she realized she gave Stanley a black eye not for being a pervert, but for simply drawing her. She and him still keeps in contact to this day.]
[1972- Carla McCorkle. Stanley crossed paths with her completely out of the blue at the Juke Joint. During a brief pause in their dancing escapade, Stanley managed to roughly capture Carla's dancing in his sketchbook. He was enraptured by her boundless energy, and wanted to challenge himself to try and imitate her lively movements and poses on paper.]

(My primary goal was just to make these pages look as realistic as possible, but I did add in mini backstories in each of the pages' image description, if you feel like reading that :])

[1973- Jack Andersen. Jack was a travelling business man who was staying in room #26 at the same motel Stanley was temporarily residing. Stan doesn't remember what it had been about Jack that intrigued him so much at the time. It might have been his voice, or his height, or his face. In any case, Jack noticed him hunched over the counter and scribbling a portrait of him onto a scrap piece of cardboard from across the lobby. He offered to meet up later to give Stanley a better view of what he was drawing. Stan still has his phone number.]
[1973- Maddison. She was the waitress attending to Stanley at the diner he had taken a pit-stop at to evade the pouring autumn rain. She had the bluest eyes he'd ever seen, and she seemed delighted when he showed her the small portrait he had done of her in cheap blue ink on the receipt.]
[1974- Jimmy Snakes. For such a laid-back man, Stanley never seemed to be able to catch him staying still long enough to draw him. He didn't get the chance to draw him a whole lot.]
[Winter of 1974- Sarah Campbell. Stanley met her out on the streets begging for money with an empty coffee cup. It was cold enough to see your breath fog, and she looked far too young to be homeless already, but she had one of the sunniest smiles that Stan had ever seen on another person. He was dragged into keeping her company when she noticed his sketchbook in his pocket and practically demanded that he draw her. He indulged her, and let her hijack the sketchbook to doodle her own drawings onto the page. She left to beg in a different area after about an hour, and Stan never saw her again. He still thinks about her sometimes. She reminds him so much of Mabel.]
[June 1975- Morrison. They met at a seedy bar in a random town that Stan doesn't care to remember the name of. In the afterglow of their one night stand, Morrison asked for Stanley to draw him after learning of the latter's hobby. He remembers Morrison walking out on him with a huff when he saw that Stanley never once drew his face.]
[He doesn't remember drawing this one.]
[1976, Colombia- Ana María. She was one of the muscles involved in a cartel mission that Stanley was participating in. His boss didn't notice him sitting in the corner with his sketchbook balanced on his knees during the meeting, and Ana María certainly didn't seem to care, although she definitely noticed him.]
[1980, Colombia- Stanley only barely managed to hide his sketchbook from the guards during the initial body search, and he never dared to pull it out in front of his inmates, lest they damage it. Besides, pencils that weren't being used as a stabbing weapon was a rarity in prison, and paper was bound to get ruined with blood at some point or another]
[Summer of 2012- Mabel and Dipper Pines. Stan remembered the day he first met the twins; not in Gravity Falls, but at Piedmont, California, almost a decade ago. They had been so small at the time, and Stan had been having such a hard time stifling his tears that he was barely able to hold his pencil properly to draw the slumbering pair, cocooned in their tiny blankets. The extra sixth finger on his gloves hadn't helped with his shakiness, but he was desperate to busy his hands so Shermie didn't notice him crying. He did anyways, and Shermie himself had looked like he was about to burst out laughing at the sight of Stan, the traitor.]

What does Stan’s symbol mean?

image

First of all, thanks to @marypsue for listening to my ramblings and giving some feedback about this a few days ago and to @eregyrn-falls for talking about Alex’s Q&A, which reminded me to write it up and post it.

Warning: this is going to be long. Sorry.

One of the things that I’ve always hoped would get an explanation from Alex (but possibly never will?) is the meaning behind the symbol on Stan’s fez/the Cipher Wheel.

First, a bit of a tangent, but I hope a productive one: in GF fanfic, a common issue when Bill and Stan appear together in a fic is that we never canonically heard Bill’s nickname for Stan (assuming he would have given Stan one, which, given Bill’s character, seems like a safe bet). Fic authors usually get around this by having Bill call Stan “Fez,” which makes sense given that’s where his symbol is and it’s a pretty distinctive element of his appearance.

BUT.

But Bill doesn’t call Dipper “ballcap,” or Mabel “sweater,” or Soos “t-shirt,” even though that’s where their symbols are found. Their nicknames are based on what the symbol IS, and the symbols (at least roughly?) represent who they are as characters.

So, ultimately, thinking about what Bill’s nickname for Stan might be sort of helps clarify what Stan’s symbol might mean vis-à-vis his character. Ahem. Back to the symbol.

The clearest direct mention of the symbol is in Journal 3, when Ford writes that Stan’s fez is from Filbrick’s  membership in the “Royal Order of the Holy Mackerel.” It’s totally possible this is all there is to it, it’s a funny fish symbol. Alex’s old DeviantArt account is reportedly holymackerel, so it’s possible it’s just something he thought was funny and that’s that.

But, we all know how much Alex loves to misdirect people – almost as much as he likes to have multiple layers of mysteries and meaning in GF. So I think it’s more likely this is just a superficial meaning for Stan’s symbol.

Looking at the symbol, there could be a few different interpretations, so I’ll present the three most interesting ones I came up with, in order of what I think is the likelihood it’s the real meaning of the symbol.

First, another look at the symbol as it appears on the fez:

image

Now what if we do this:

image

Looks like an eye, right? Just one eye?

The least likely theory is that the symbol has something to do with Stan’s character being connected to Bill’s in some way. It’s a cool interpretation, considering how important the idea of the “beast with just one eye” was, and the fact that, as Mr. Mystery, Stan wore an eyepatch (and so had just one eye visible). If you’re a subscriber to the Same Coin theory, this interpretation might work for that.

I personally don’t think this is it, though. So let’s turn the symbol this way:

image

Notice the symbol in canon art is always represented with these proportions. Now what does it look like? A bit like the portal casting a shadow? Who lived (figuratively and literally) in the shadow of the portal for 30 years? Yeah.

Stan, with his long-standing self-esteem and self-worth issues, saw himself as just “part of a dynamic duo,” essentially Ford’s shadow, not capable of accomplishing anything on his own. So, this interpretation is a little more likely to me, and I headcanon that Bill’s nickname for Stan would be something like “Shadow,” because it’s not only thematically appropriate, it’s snide and hurtful.

But this still doesn’t seem like it’d be an appropriate symbol for Stan’s character. After all, reductively thinking of him as Ford’s shadow would only represent most people’s (and his own self-) perception of Stan in the first (admittedly long) part of his character arc. So what represents the culmination of his character arc?

Let’s turn the symbol one more time:

image

Look familiar?

Well, first of all, there are some similar-looking symbols in the history museum in SotBE:

image

And on the ur-Cipher Wheel in Mabelcorn:

image

I personally don’t think it’s related to the symbol that’s similar to the Freemason symbol, because that seems on-the-nose and superficial to be on a secret society fez (though a cute reference), and more related to Dipper’s character than Stan’s. I think the other symbol gives a clue as to its meaning, since it’s also incredibly similar to Stan’s symbol’s shape.

…what legendary bird is often represented in this shape? And the shape on the fez? Wings upraised in a circular shape?

image

So…my best guess is that this is a simplified, stylized version of one of the best symbols for Stan’s character: a phoenix. The imagery of Stan burning is present throughout the series, and of course, Stan is literally immolated and reborn in the finale. I absolutely headcanon that this is what Stan’s symbol really means. (But I don’t think Bill would ever call Stan “Phoenix,” do you?)

All this is just speculation, though. You’d have to have actually been in the writer’s room (or Alex’s brain), or have done a lot of research into ancient symbols (in so many cultures and historical contexts, seriously – Egyptian symbolism, indigenous American tribal symbolism, secret society symbolism, alchemy symbols, etc) to suss out what everything related to Stan and his symbol (the flag/banners for the Royal Order of the Holy Mackerel, the first symbol in comparison to the second symbol – both work for the Phoenix symbolism, the color symbolism in the series, etc) might mean.

Rose Tyler was poor. She didn't finish her A-levels, she lived in government housing, she worked a shitty retail job with no hope of college or university on the horizon, she was 300% what her classist society would view as trashy; thick mascara, dark roots, the whole nine yards.

But she was the most important woman in the universe to the Doctor, to so many she impacted; beautiful, brilliant, adored. She was the love of his live(s), and so, so many who met her were touched in some way just because she was herself, and because her conviction, her love, and her compassion were so powerful that they radiated across universes, throughout time, and changed everything, over and over again.

And I know all of this has been said so many times, for almost twenty years now, but Rose, I think you will always be my favorite fictional woman of all time.
