Sweetheart was waiting outside the building. It was night out. They were so lost in thought they almost didn’t notice David joining them. “Smoking again? I thought you had quit all that.” David raised a brow, staring straight ahead.

“I did. It’s just, I’m… feeling a bit nostalgic for my academy days.” They said indifferently, inhaling.

The Alpha clicked his tongue, quiet for a long moment. David always hated that habit. But he understood that now wasn’t the time for a lecture. He didn’t know the details of what cases they were currently working on, but he did know that the bags under Sweetheart’s eyes had gotten darker. They were more silent than usual lately.

The Inversion had been quite a few months ago. People were starting to recover. But he knew better than anyone that that kind of trauma didn’t go away easily. It was the kind of thing that never really left you. And with the Department doing damage control, it was no surprise that they were running their employees ragged. “I’ll put it out if it bothers you” Sweethearts exhaled smoke into the cold night air. They dropped it to the ground and snuffed it out with their shoe. “You wolves and your noses,” they chuckled wrly.

David nodded silently in thanks. They didn’t speak much when they were alone, if they didn’t need to. Both of them were the silent types, unless they were around their mates. They stood side by side, enjoying the quiet.

This time, he didn’t know what to say. He wanted the words to come out right, so he chewed on them for a few minutes before he said, in a low voice. “You alright?”

David knew they weren’t. How could anybody be in their position? He sure as hell wasn’t. It was so woefully inadequate that he immediately cringed. Angel was better at this. The whole comforting thing. Sweetheart stared at him for a second, before breaking out into laughter. “What’s this? Going all Alpha on me?” They grinned.

David huffed, flushing a bit. They caught his embarrassment and softened a bit.

“That’s sweet of you,” Sweetheart chuckled. “But I’m fine. Really.”

He narrowed his eyes, searching their expression. They were a very good actor. You had to be if you were an investigator. Poker face. But the eyes don’t lie. There was a dullness to them, a heaviness that no amount of bullshitting could mask.

David was silent for a moment. He didn’t push. “Alright. But.. I’m here. Milo’s here. The packs here. Don’t forget that.” He gazed at them, lifting his chin.

Sweetheart’s lips pulled up ever so slightly. They didn’t tease. They nodded almost imperceptibly, and it was the first honest expression David had seen from them in a while.
