In Danish, if you're acting improper or if you're being mean we say "hvordan kan du være det bekendt?" which LITERALLY means: how could you be familiar with that? like this isn’t your heart, who are you right now
in an age where machine translation is getting better and better I BEG you to keep learning languages and keep your brain sharp and keep an open mind. learning a language is so much more than memorizing a bunch of words, it opens up ways of seeing the world you hadn't considered before that are inherent to the way things are phrased in another language. it gives you a new lens through which you'll view life. it will make your life fuller, more well-rounded, more fulfilling. please learn languages other than your own.
Every single person studying a language when they recognize the most basic word of the language in a text or a video
Learning a new language really does make you aware of how many fucking words there are. Waaaaaay too many things in this world that need their own special little word. Grow up.
People might wonder why I love etymology so much and the reason is simple — our everyday language is full of poetry. The English word "clue"? It comes from a Middle English word for "a ball of yarn", "clewe", which is a reference to the myth about Theseus and the Labyrinth. The Czech word "potkat" — "to meet"? The "tkat" part actually comes from "tkát" — to weave. To meet someone is literally to get interwoven with someone in Czech. How am I supposed to not love this?
Can I once again suggest the app Polygloss for language practice?
You watch with other users to describe and guess pictures and it theoretically supports all languages as long as there are active users. Especially if you're a minority language learner or speaker, spread the word to get fellow learners or community members signed up!

strangely common misconception that words have basically the same meanings in every langauge and that translation is just a matter of identifying which exact word in the target language corresponds to the word in the original language
(Hi! I am Chahtawordoftheday!)
Each new generation is responsible for proliferating their stories. I created this blog because, as a Native, this is hard to do alone. Want to brush up on Chahta anumpa (The Choctaw language) with me? Then this is the blog for you! Look forward to daily vocab, reposted lessons of the day from The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma's website, and a spotlight on Native art/resources.
Speaking of which, here are my favorite Chahta language learning resources:

I can't wait to go on this journey with you!
