We talk a lot about consent, and that’s a good thing. We talk a lot about autonomy, and that’s a good thing. We talk a lot about privacy, and that’s a good thing.
But we talk mostly about all of that in respect to sex, and relationships, and it’s important to remember this applies to other things, too.
If someone says, “don’t tell anyone I got this new job,” and you then tell people, you’ve violated their consent, their privacy, and their autonomy.
If a friend says, “I don’t like it when people touch my hair,” and you keep touching their hair, you have violated their consent, their autonomy, and their privacy.
If a coworker asks you not to tease them about their new boyfriend, even if it seems like gentle and friendly fun to you, and you do it, you’ve violated their consent, their autonomy, and their privacy.
People remember these things, and they hurt. Not as much as sexual assault, obviously. But those small violations of your wishes, those instances of disrespect, still hurt, and they can add up.
Consent doesn’t just apply to sex. Respect the wishes of others.

I know this is going to make me sound pretensions but I have to get it off my chest. I feel an unimaginable rage when someone posts a photo and is like "this picture looks like a renaissance painting lol" when the photo clearly has the lighting, colors and composition of a baroque or romantic painting. There are differences in these styles and those differences are important and labeling every "classical" looking painting as renaissance is annoying and upsetting to me. And anytime I come across one of those posts I have to put down my phone and go take a walk because they make me so mad
If you're in Texas and you're trying to stay warm during the power outages, here's some tips from an Illinoisan currently living in Texas. Obviously battery powered heaters or heated blankets can be great, as is a fire in a fireplace. But if those aren't options for you, try:
1. You can use tape around the edges of doors and windows to prevent drafts, or use towels or blankets to stuff around it. We currently have blankets taped up covering our doors and towels taped over most of our windows. Avoid going into rooms with an outside wall or multiple/large windows, they're going to be colder.
2. If you're getting power back every now and then, fill a sock about 2/3 full with rice, lentils, or dry beans, stick it in the microwave for about 30 seconds at a time, checking to see when it's nice and warm. Then put it at your feet under a blanket.
3. If you have a gas stove, boil a pot of water. You can make tea or soup with it, but even just boiling water will help warm and humidify the home a little. Good for avoiding nosebleeds.
4. Set all your faucets to drip. Moving water in the pipes keeps them from freezing, which is good because you don't want them to burst.
5. Got a significant other? Kids? Pets? Cuddle them. Never underestimate how much it helps to have another warm body sharing a blanket with you.
6. Do NOT drink alcohol. Yes, it makes you feel nice and warm. It also causes you to LOSE body heat.
7. Move around! Even just bicycling your legs will get your blood flowing, which will help warm you up. Then you can go right back to bundling up.
if i rolled out of bed, didn't fuck with my hair or wash my face and put on ill-fitting, dirty clothes and went to run an errand, someone probably would take pictures of me and put me on a page like "people of walmart" or "ratchetmess".
when im out my body and image belongs to the public, and nobody in that space cares about my wellbeing. i want to be me and do me no matter what, but unlike my white peers i don't have the option of not looking good. i don't have the option of having a bad hair day if i want to keep a job. few people will ever find my dishevelment charming, and looking upset (this is often a neutral expression or slightly showing stress) is a threat. people will not recognize my humanity and there's always a decent chance of bullying, harassment and danger.
