Two house plants by a window in a warmly lit corner with a translucent black box over the image. Within the box is a poem titled House Plant by A.M. Watson, aka Artsy Magee:

One glance outside my window
Blesses my eyes with seas of green,
Of trees, and grass, and bushes
Waving at me, hoping to be seen

These magnificent, flourishing beings
Dancing together in the breeze
Hold not a single care in the world
Each doing exactly how they please

The world outside looks energized
So warm, welcoming and clean
But I chose to stay safe inside
Where no one can talk to me

No matter the day or weather
I stay safely behind a screen
Chalking all of my canceled plans
up to my social anxiety

But I realized something today
Something that will make you beam
IT’S OKAY TO BE A HOUSEPLANT
And hide away from the evergreens

It’s okay to be yourself, even when
It’s hard to make others pleased
Not everyone has to live their lives
As if on the cover of a magazine

Picture of a Fourth of July sparkler held in someone's hand. The poem to the right of the sparkler is titled, "Independence Day" by A.M. Watson (@artsymagee).

The poem:

Yet another American holiday that has been
Boiled down until the alcohol has evaporated
Leaving nothing in the pot but white residue
We don’t have a clue how it affects the Indigenous
As we cram the porcelain slop down their throats
In an attempt to bleach them and uproot them.
Red, white and blue scream into whiteish, blue faces
Filling them up like noxious balloons, set to
Pop off on anyone who doesn’t agree with you.
We celebrate freedom from a country we have
Easily become the mirror image of, giving us
Nothing to celebrate but hypocrisy, and honestly,
A massively corpulent American lie.

Where I’m From

March 4, 2015 - One of the first poems I’ve written!

I’m from half built tree houses

And vicious snow ball fights.

The one who gets to the sled first wins,

And the blasting of music to strangers.

I’ve seen the top of mountains

And felt the bottom of rivers.

Screaming, “MARK!” at signs, and

“Fluffy!” at strangers.

The bruise on the thigh that will never heal

And the obnoxious air that fills the place.

The crushing trees that are in it for blood

To the cat stuffed in a wooden box in the basement.

I’m from the alarms and the gummy bear stuck on the fan.

Haunted radios and jello in the fridge.

From knowing what I’m saying when I’m not saying much

To the rabbit foot key chain in the old rotten box.

I’m from the snapped and twisted,

The stubbed and burned,

Leafing and dead family tree,

That I am proud to call my own.

Untitled (5:30PM)

It was 5:30 pm and you were laughing as the

Breeze was knocking my hair all around me

The smell of the beach stuck under

Our noses

I glanced at you and could help

But to smile

That's when I knew

I could glance at you for

The rest of my life
