No: “You have to be X to write about X.”
Halfway there: “Anyone can write about anything.”
Yes: “Anyone can write about anything, but your content does not exist in vacuum. If a POC tells you your portrayal of a character is racist, or a queer person tells you you’re playing into harmful stereotypes, listen to them. Fandom is an escape only for privileged people. Being inclusive means listening to marginalized voices instead of dismissing us as fun police.”
Do you think the handwringing over Zelda changing back at the end of TOTK is rooted in the idea of "dying for a cause" or the obsession with punitive media? As in, a character who undertakes a drastic action like sacrifice MUST face consequences (i.e., death or similar punishment) in order for it to have impact or meaning? Essentially killing off Zelda would have been a disservice to her after all the development she went through and all the people she befriended post-BOTW, especially considering she avoided "inheriting a kingdom of nothing" like her father warned her. It would have been an emotionally vacant and cruel ending for her.
I think not only the obsession with punitive media (although why they might think Zelda would deserve to be punished is beyond me), but the glorification, in literary circles, of tragedy and suffering, and the corresponding conviction that hope is naive and unqualified happy endings for immature audiences. Victory, in this view, must always come at a steep price, and any remuneration of losses suffered makes the price not steep enough.
Throwback to all these Jesus comics I drew in 2012…
zany to me how these um actually nihilists like to pretend that "um actually love/friendship/cooperation/kindness isn't real bc we evolved that way to benefit ourselves as a species..." um YES? that's also where tool use comes from? that's where cooking comes from? am i supposed to think social bonds & tool use & cooking aren't "real" because they evolved over time instead of appearing fully formed from the ether?
sorry u can't enjoy things. im a superior being twirling a fork in my bowl of delicious noodles whilst staring in adoration at the world
