“Miss (Y/N).”
The stern voice of your nurse snapped you out of your daze. Your fingers pushed the scrapbook in your hands to a close with a small ‘thump’, your weak (E/C) irises met her brown ones. Despite her previous tone of voice, Nurse Kim seemed to soften her gaze on you as she placed a glass of water on your bed stand. You could hear the sound of her pouring your dose of pills for today too; it was a noise that you despised because it served as a reminder of your present. Not just that, but the hospital gown on your figure and the ticking of the clock… all of them. But, there was only one thing that could bring you solace.
“Is Jake here yet?” The sentence almost felt like a routine to you, the excitement in your voice didn’t do a good job at hiding itself. Nurse Kim must’ve thought the same as she chuckled. “I’m sure he will arrive soon enough.”
The presence of your lover by your side was the only thing that kept you going. Would it be an understatement to say that he was the sun to your world? He would’ve laughed at you if you ever told him that. But truly, you weren’t exaggerating.
Jake was there for you at the night of your school’s prom. He was there when you snuck out of your bedroom to go out with him at night. He was there when you lost consciousness for the first time in class. He was there when the doctor told the both of you about your brain cancer, a terminal illness. He was there when you realized you had little to no time left to live. He was there when you cried and cursed out your fate. There were more — yet, your constant headaches always prevented you from recalling everything — but you knew one thing. It was the fact that Jake had always been there for you.
“Please remember to take your medicine, Miss (Y/N).” Nurse Kim sent a last reminder to you before bidding you goodbye, not wanting to disturb your private visit with your boyfriend. You nodded with a hum, yet the glass of water and pills were left abandoned on the stand. Fingers eagerly tapping on your bed at the same pace as the singular clock ticking on the wall of your room, all you wanted right now was to see Jake. You wondered where was he right now? What did he do today? How was Layla? Gosh… you were just so in love with him, weren’t you?
And that was why it hurt the most when slowly, you began to realize that something was off.
