The Thing With Benedict Cumberbatch

…..is that if you put someone in front of his movies or his TV shows, and making them watch everything back to back to back to back, and you don’t tell them that Benedict Cumberbatch is any of the roles, I can pretty much guarantee that they won’t realize it’s the same actor, And if you show them footage of BC just being….BC, they might not believe you. 

He DISAPPEARS completely into his characters and it is so unsettling sometimes. He’s a chameleon and it’s just astonishing to be his fan sometimes, especially when you’re a filmholic like me and try to think about the craft rather than just the movie. 

No two characters are alike, no two characters have the same manner, no two characters even have the same voice or pronunciation, no two characters even look alike, which is really weird when you think about it! Yes there are hundreds of other actors who do the body transformation thing (Tom Hardy, Christian Bale and Gary Oldman come to mind) but somehow with BC, the change is so profound that you can’t even track it unless you’re really paying attention. 

He inhabits every single molecule of whatever character he’s playing, and he will leave you convinced that he is whatever character he’s playing. Actually, he convinces you that he’s not even playing a character, that he is that person.

PS: Making this post, I can’t tell you how many characters I couldn’t remember simply because I didn’t remember that he played them? If that makes sense– like Chrissie!

This list is by no means comprehensive but just a smattering of characters that he’s played. Im currently watching him as Khan (because why not) and can’t believe that it’s Benedict Cumberbatch.

If you’re beautiful and a hunk and you’ve got great cheekbones you can probably get away with two dimensions.

I turned to them and said: “It’s gotta be [Martin]. He raises my game.

Wanda: Ben adores Martin as a person as well as an actor.

I suppose my first memory would be the audition process. I came in on my own, didn’t do very well, and then I came and read with Ben *sigh* and it went much better.

I think I can speak for Martin as well…

Because, ultimately, [Ben’s] the thing that it can’t go on without.

Occasionally I would look at Ben and then look at myself in the mirror, and go Thank God we’re finally playing Holmes and Watson instead of John and Sherlock.

But [the fight scene] was quite good fun because it was contained you know, it was just Ben and I. We sort of, we knew what we were doing.

Mark and Steven have just excelled themselves and that’s what keeps Martin and I coming back for more.

You know, both Martin and I have been lucky enough to work on sort of big budget Hollywood films

Well, I am in the back of a car with Martin and that’s pretty much it.

[Martin]’s working. he’s actually doing the show. he is, he is the only one of us that’s actually working right now.

It’s pretty cool and you know we work very hard and I adore [Martin] and he’s one of the funniest man on the planet, he’s so fast, we both really really love the show so it’s always fun getting the band back together and we have a really good time doing it and this series has been no exception… we always have this moment together where we read the script and ring each other… we have the moment, that communal moment between shooting and we’re going “Oh my God, this is so exciting“ we’re so lucky to be doing this. We have a lot of fun. We have a lot of fun.

EW Morning Live Interview

I think Ben and I… everyone involved in the show is acutely aware of how well written it is and how well produced it is… you know, when you have a show that’s well written, well shot, well scored, you know and you are lucky enough to have chemistry with the person that’s pretty cool.

Thank God we’re all busy, you know, Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss are busy, me and Ben are busy…
