Ten facts about gender inequality in business

image

Gender is a central concept in modern societies. However, gender gaps are still a wide-spread phenomenon. While gender gaps in education and health have been decreasing remarkably over time and their differences across countries have been narrowing, gender gaps in the labour market and in politics are more persistent and still vary largely across countries.

The following ten facts, written by Paola Profeta (Associate Professor in Public Economics at Università Bocconi), help shed light on the gender-gap problem:

Gender gaps have historical roots: These roots can be traced back to the organization of the family and to traditional agricultural practices.

Culture matters in determining gender gaps: Gender stereotypes are well-established, both among men and among women.

Men and women have different attitudes and behaviours: On average women are significantly less likely than men to make risky choices and to engage competition.

Maternity does not explain it all: There is no trade-off between fertility and female employment – but maternity is a penalty in the labour market.

Education is the first engine of gender equality: Women and men are currently equally educated, and women often surpass male educational attainments in developed countries.

Gender gaps in employment and the glass ceiling are different phenomena - although they often go hand-in-hand.

Labour demand is as important as individuals’ choices: Firms’ decisions, employers’ attitudes and beliefs, are as important as individuals’ incentives and choices.

Institutions play a crucial role in supporting female employment: Family policies, parental leave, and formal child care provisions may help supporting female labour supply.

Institutions play a crucial role in determining the glass ceiling: How to promote female leadership and the presence of women in top positions is a highly debated issue.

Women’s empowerment and economic development are interrelated: Economic development improves women’s conditions and reduces inequality – and the involvement of women in the economy is a key engine for growth.

Amazing, the World of Artist Management

The world of artist management is amazing. It is like being in backstage in a beautiful theatre in New York watching the play of Macbeth. What is right behind the curtain is the most wonderful sight that a student might be able to watch and enjoy. This is exactly what happened with this class in Product and Artist Management. It is that opportunity to see closely how things are done in all the aspects involved in the promotion and making of an artist.

In the light of that, we learn in the course how to plan, because “the difference between success and failure in the promotion of an artist is planning”. Consequently the plan cannot go forward if there is no “organization” to assemble all the necessary resources to achieve that particular plan designed for the artist.

Also, we need to lead and direct people towards the goal and use all those resources at hand to achieve their success.

As the artist's manager, our responsibility is to get the artist to the top of his or her career. In order to do that, we need to follow the plan by controlling the whole process, such as time, people, resources and finances. It is important to do a reality check and see if everything is going according to the plan. If it is not, we need to make some decisions. Do we fire some employees and look for new people that can do the job or change the plan? Would it be worth it? Would it be better to find a new person? How that is going to help us to achieve success?

All these lessons are learned from Paul Allen in his book “Artist Management for the Music Business” that covers all of the aspects in the promotion of an artist.

Personally, I have already applied some of these lessons in real world. We started a project with a couple of friends, and most of those lessons have been applied into this project. We are going step by step, little by little trying to give some shape to this adventure to see it through and successful. For this reason, this project in particular plus the lessons from that book, open our eyes and provide us with the knowledge to deal with these cases at hand at the present time, and indeed will be of great help in the future.

How To Write A Healthy Relationship

How To Write A Healthy Relationship

Writing healthy love is hard! Finding a balance between engaging conflict and fulfilling romance is not an easy task, but it is worthwhile. NaNoWriMo Programs Fellow, Riya Cyriac, offers insight, advice, and examples on how to write healthy relationships.

Throughout my time as a reader and a writer, I’ve encountered an abundance of romances that range from swoon worthy to absolutely disastrous. This is not discounting either end of the spectrum: they have their place. However, there seems to be a noticeable lack of representation for healthy, fulfilling relationships in literature. This is particularly evident in Young Adult literature, where the portrayal of healthy relationships is particularly essential. If you are interested in writing a healthy relationship and filling that void, here are some observations, suggestions, and tips to do that

Obsession and Anger are not Expressions of Healthy Love

As a young adult, I often read books that romanticized obsession and anger. If the love interest punched someone who shows interest in their partner, that is not an indication of passion or love. On the contrary, it should be a glaring red flag. If a character relentlessly pursues their love interest despite resistance, it is not love. It is an obsession, and a clear sign that the character views the other as their property. It’s tempting to use these actions as expressions of passion because it is easy and bold.
