The first Palestinian athlete to participate in the Olympic games died on Wednesday at the Nuseirat refugee camp in Gaza as a result of kidney failure due to power outages and medical shortages as a result of the ongoing Israeli war and siege of the enclave.
Majed Abu Maraheel, who passed away at the age of 61, became the first athlete to be the flag bearer and represent Palestinians at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996. Being a distance runner, he competed in the 10km race.
Since his breakthrough on the world stage, more than 20 Palestinian men and women have been able to compete at Olympic competitions.
"He was a Palestinian icon, and he will remain as such," his brother told Paltoday TV after the funeral.
"We tried to evacuate him to Egypt but then the Rafah crossing was closed (by Israel), and his condition kept deteriorating."
In his preparation for the Olympics, Abu Maraheel would often be seen on his daily runs from his home in Gaza to the Erez Crossing with Israel, which Israel closed in October after imposing a full blockade on the Strip.
Last month, it was reopened for the first time since then.
He would often have to pass through that crossing for his job as a day labourer in Israel. After participating in the Olympics, Abu Maraheel went on to become a coach for other Palestinian runners hoping to replicate his presence at the international competition.
Abu Maraheel's death highlights the grim fate of many Palestinians who are facing kidney failure in Gaza.
A report from the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor in March found that there were between 1,000 to 1,500 patients in Gaza with kidney failure, and that they are facing a "slow death" because of "a lack of medical and therapeutic services, medications and other necessities".
Israel denies blocking humanitarian aid into Gaza, though aid agencies say they are not able to get aid in because of Israeli restrictions.

Sami's Last Dream: Escaping the Hell of Gaza in Search of Safety
In Gaza, where life has become nothing more than a fight for survival, Sami and His Family are living a never-ending nightmare. Every new day brings more destruction and fear, and what once was a safe home for them has turned into rubble and painful memories.
Their house collapsed entirely before their eyes. The sound of the explosion that destroyed everything, the relentless scene of devastation, and the tears of his children that have not stopped, have all become a constant reality in Sami's life. His three childrenβJud, Lin, and Miskβclung to their mother in the corner of the tent that has become their only refuge. But even this tent cannot protect them from the scorching summer heat or the bitter winter cold. οΈ
Sami has lost everything. The shop that was their only source of income is gone, and now he stands powerless, watching his family suffer, unable to do anything for them. The mother tries to hide her tears, fearing she might break down in front of her children, and the siblings share this pain without knowing when it will end.
But even this simple dream comes with great challenges. The cost of traveling through the Rafah border crossing is exorbitantβ$5,000 per adult and $3,000 per child. With seven family members, these costs are more than just numbers; they are a massive hurdle that Sami cannot overcome alone.
Additionally, there are many other expenses such as securing housing, food, and medical care after leaving Gaza, making the situation even more difficult.
Today, Sami and his family stand on the edge of despair. They need your help now more than ever. Every donation, no matter how small, can be a step towards realizing Sami's last dreamβto take his family to a place far from this tragedy. A place where they can start anew, and live with dignity and safety. β¨
Help Sami achieve this dream.
Donate now and be the ray of hope that saves this family from the darkness surrounding them. Let us be the reason his children smile again, and give them the chance at the life they deserve.
A Plea for Help from Gaza: A Family Seeking Safety
Hello, I am Samar Shamiya, married to Hashem Al-Shawish (@hashemsh92) @hashemsh12 . I have a child born in the war, his name is Omar. He is 6 months old.
We live in the midst of the ongoing hellish war in Gaza, trapped between walls of fear and despair.
We struggle daily to survive in an environment filled with threats and dangers.
We are originally from the north of the Gaza Strip, but at the beginning of the war we were displaced several times without anything. Our house was completely destroyed and we are now homeless.
We urgently appeal for your moral and financial assistance to cover the necessary costs for escaping to a safe environment, where we can build a better future for our children and ensure our family's safety.
We are in desperate need of your support. Any donation, no matter how small, can help save our lives. Thank you for your attention and support during these harsh times.
Samar shamia
