My theory is that the term "blinding star" refers to our sun directly. The sun blocks every other star and halves the time people of the island have to research the stars.

The people researching the stars want to sleep at day and stay awake at night to look at stars more but the sun also makes it way harder for the researchers to sleep in the day by being so goddamn bright and on their face.

The sun is a giant ego star who wants nothing but attention for 12 hours straight. They despise him.

im a little obsessed with how blinding is a swear in isat. used by a guy who is half blind. used almost exclusively by that guy, actually.
