joe sr when jfk wanted to be an academic instead of president:
thinking things society will shun me for
Her gaiety and enthusiasm picked him up whenever he was down, and her ease with the social amenities filled the gaps that his own reticence occasioned. Above all, she showered him with affection and support, and he needed that. As the seventh child and the third son, following in the wake of two acknowledged โgolden boysโ like Joe and John, he had never felt for very long that he belonged anywhere. That was what all his striving for personal excellence was about. But now Ethel was there, always there, telling him that he had nothing to prove to her.
When I Think of Bobby by Warren Rogers

The thing about it โ and this was told to me by a member of the family, and I think it was important โ is that Bobby always had a terrible inferiority complex. He just couldnโt live up to his brothers. And he was caught in the middle there, I donโt think he got as much attention as the other kids. Therefore, he was always shy and always unsure of himself. Ethel was the one that changed him and gave him complete loyalty and ego building and whatever. She devoted her whole life to him. Whatever she did was always for Bobby. So, of all the wives I know, she was the least competitive when it came to her husband. She was 110 percent. She would be the one who would get madโฆ She read everything, and she used to get mad at people that Bobby wouldnโt even have time to get mad at. And, Bobby, naturally, being in politics, was more sophisticated than Ethel about his enemies. But boy, Ethel never forgot and she was toughโฆ I just felt that she โ and someone said this, and I think it was a very lovely thing โ they said that she never could get over the fact that she was married to him. It was the greatest thing that ever happened to her. He was very devoted to her. I remember a couple of times he would whisper to me, โGo over and talk to Ethel; make her happy, cheer her up, or something.โ He was always conscious of her. And it was a very, very interesting โ I would call it a beautiful relationship.

RFK Oral History Interview
Kennedy moves from one room to another, then sits for a moment in the hall as people stream back and forth past him. He is deeply worn, but nearly a month of intensive campaigning still lies ahead โ Nebraska next week, then Oregon, then South Dakota and California. He rubs his face. He has pushed himself to the limit, but he does not mention his weariness. His face is gaunt, weathered; his eyes are sunken and red. He rubs his hand over his face again, as if to tear away the exhaustion. It is not something he has sympathy with, his hand is not consoling as it drags across his faceโhe is simply trying to get rid of an encumbrance. He responds to questions from a reporter slowly, haltingly, trying to think; the questions seem to goad him painfully to one more effort. In the wake of his success, he admits there are great areas of loss โ primarily for his family, and in his privacy. โI think... I think... I would make this one effort... and if it fails I would go back to my children... If you bring children into the world, you should stay with them, see them through...โ He had once thought of teaching, or of starting a new kind of project in the Mississippi Delta, or of working with the Indians, but now he doesnโt know. โI think about it,โ he says slowly. โI think about it... Iโm not sure.โ The hand drags across the face again, his eyes closed. He mentions privacy. โIt would be nice taking a walk sometime without someone taking a picture of you taking a walk...โ More people come through the door. Kennedy looks up, gets quickly to his feet, and greets them, alert again, moving.
