you know what? You know what? im still never going to stop being peeved about the way people massacred the backrooms. the whole point of the original backrooms image, the thing that made it creepy in the first place, was that so much of it was unknown. and that's the appeal; that's why the backrooms as a horror concept is so interesting, so frightening in the first place, the idea that at any moment in your life, for some never to be known reason, you could just... end up, in an empty, endless labyrinth, one that looks so familiar yet so different, one from which there is nothing known within and no escape in sight. and what did they internet do with it? oh they added five million different "levels", five million different monsters, all this unnecessary complexity that does nothing but make the entire existence of the backrooms actively WORSE.
the vision of the backrooms as these super intricate crazy dungeons filled to the brim with terrifying monsters is the epitome of bad horror, because are you seriously gonna tell me that there's something scarier than the unknown? the original concept of the backrooms is so good because it's just so mysterious, and above all else, so hopelessly hollow. maybe you could find yourself in the backrooms and wander for hours, days, or years, and you'd never see another living thing, and you'd never ever find a way out. maybe you'd have died of starvation at some point, of course, or maybe the backrooms don't function in a way where you could starve at all. who's to say? there's no way to know! in fact, the only thing we know about them is that we DON'T know anything about them.
the backrooms are a place we all feel like we've been before, maybe in a dream, maybe in another life, but they also represent the fear in the back of all our minds of being in a situation that is truly unknown. when you are in the backrooms, you are at the mercy of a completely alien world where nothing may ever end and you will never find out what the meaning of it all is, if there ever was one in the first place. it's a world where you can do nothing but wait until you finally meet your end, if an end still is to come, and face the facts that there is so much to this world we just don't know. there is no way to enter besides an unfortunate dumb luck and there is no way, end of story, to ever, ever leave. and that—the all-consuming, completely unknowing emptiness—is forever scarier than any monster.
