There are too many smart immortals. I want more stories about immortal himbos.
Reblogging because I’m a grown 40-something mom whose career is in nursing. whose special interest when I was 17 was marine biology, and it still is. Just a little reminder that there’s no shame if you didn’t make your special interest into your career. Find joy in it still if you can! Collect special interests and find joy.
i feel like this is very importantTM to say, you dont need to be an expert in your special interest
marine biology is my special interest. i suck at identifying fish. i can identify one fish but only because i spent ages fixating on it. i couldnt tell you the scientific name of anything else.
when i was in primary school most of my information came from the octonauts since i wasnt allowed the internet, it was still my special interest then even when i hardly knew anything.
having a special interest doesnt mean you immediately become amazing at whatever it is, and thats totally ok. its ok to forget things, to not know things, for other people to know more about the thing. thats part of the fun, theres so much about everything to learn and improve on.
in my personal case there are thousands of scientists who know more than me. i may know more than my friends, but im 17. there are scientists who study the ocean for a living and its perfectly reasonable for them to know more than me
the only thing that matters is that it gives you energy, that you enjoy doing it, that its special to you
Bathrobe if ya nasty. USA English. Honestly, I think I use mine for the purpose of a “house coat”
RB to see how others think-- also, what territory you're from and version of English you speak! (this is to settle a thing I am pondering)
I got to hold a 500,000 year old hand axe at the museum today.
It's right-handed
I am right-handed
There are grooves for the thumb and knuckle to grip that fit my hand perfectly
I have calluses there from holding my stylus and pencils and the gardening tools.
There are sharper and blunter parts of the edge, for different types of cutting, as well as a point for piercing.
I know exactly how to use this to butcher a carcass.
A homo erectus made it
Some ancestor of mine, three species ago, made a tool that fits my hand perfectly, and that I still know how to use.
Who were you
A man? A woman? Did you even use those words?
Did you craft alone or were you with friends? Did you sing while you worked?
Did you find this stone yourself, or did you trade for it? Was it a gift?
Did you make it for yourself, or someone else, or does the distinction of personal property not really apply here?
Who were you?
What would you think today, seeing your descendant hold your tool and sob because it fits her hands as well?
What about your other descendant, the docent and caretaker of your tool, holding her hands under it the way you hold your hands under your baby's head when a stranger holds them.
Is it bizarre to you, that your most utilitarian object is now revered as holy?
Or has it always been divine?
Or is the divine in how I am watching videos on how to knap stone made by your other descendants, learning by example the way you did?
Tomorrow morning I am going to the local riverbed in search of the appropriate stones, and I will follow your example.
The first blood spilled on it will almost certainly be my own, as I learn the textures and rhythm of how it's done.
Did you have cuss words back then? Gods to blaspheme when the rock slips and you almost take your thumbnail off instead? Or did you just scream?
I'm not religious.
But if spilling my own blood to connect with a stranger who shared it isn't partaking in the divine
I don't know what is.
“X bodily fluid is just filtered blood!” buddy I hate to break it to you but ALL of the fluids in your body are filtered blood. Your circulatory system is how water gets around your body. It all comes out of the blood (or lymph, which is just filtered blood).
Absolutely nothing good comes from guilting, forcing, and shaming people into having kids. It’s only going to result in parents that resent and regret their kids. This is bad for kids.
Do you know why, increasingly with each generation, more kids grow up into adults who genuinely love children and want to advocate for them? It’s precisely a result of greater reproductive freedom for all people, better access to healthcare, education, safe public spaces, safe food/water/air. Which political party has been doing away with these? Hmmmmm…? Please, help me understand why there are undecided voters
Conservatives have destroyed their own hearts and minds. With no empathy or compassion, no appreciation of critical thinking or emotional intelligence, they left themselves at the mercy of petty, vile, loveless abusers.
Conception, pregnancy, and raising children need love and respect.
Keep MAGA misery and unhappiness away from children.

In the future, children will think our ways are strange. "Why do old people always grow so much milkweed in their gardens?" they'll say. "Why do old people always write down when the first bees and butterflies show up? Why do old people hate lawn grass so much? Why do old people like to sit outside and watch bees?"
We will try to explain to them that when we were young, most people's yards were almost entirely short grass with barely any flowers at all, and it was so commonplace to spray poisons to kill insects and weeds that it was feared monarch butterflies and American bumblebees would soon go extinct. We will show them pictures of sidewalks, shops, and houses surrounded by empty grass without any flowers or vegetables and they will stare at them like we stared at pictures of grimy children working in coal mines

Hey remember VHS where you bought a box to plug into your tv and you could legally record whatever was playing and then own it for free forever
