What’s Up for May? Two huge solar system highlights: Mercury transits the sun and Mars is closer to Earth than it has been in 11 years.

On May 9, wake up early on the west coast or step out for coffee on the east coast to see our smallest planet cross the face of the sun. The transit will also be visible from most of South America, western Africa and western Europe.

A transit occurs when one astronomical body appears to move across the face of another as seen from Earth or from a spacecraft. But be safe! You’ll need to view the sun and Mercury through a solar filter when looking through a telescope or when projecting the image of the solar disk onto a safe surface. Look a little south of the sun’s Equator. It will take about 7 ½ hours for the tiny planet’s disk to cross the sun completely. Since Mercury is so tiny it will appear as a very small round speck, whether it’s seen through a telescope or projected through a solar filter. The next Mercury transit will be Nov. 11, 2019.

Two other May highlights involve Mars. On May 22 Mars opposition occurs. That’s when Mars, Earth and the sun all line up, with Earth directly in the middle.

Eight days later on May 30, Mars and Earth are nearest to each other in their orbits around the sun. Mars is over half a million miles closer to Earth at closest approach than at opposition. But you won’t see much change in the diameter and brightness between these two dates. As Mars comes closer to Earth in its orbit, it appears larger and larger and brighter and brighter.

During this time Mars rises after the sun sets. The best time to see Mars at its brightest is when it is highest in the sky, around midnight in May and a little earlier in June.

Through a telescope you can make out some of the dark features on the planet, some of the lighter features and sometimes polar ice and dust storm-obscured areas showing very little detail.

After close approach, Earth sweeps past Mars quickly. So the planet appears large and bright for only a couple weeks.

But don’t worry if you miss 2016’s close approach. 2018’s will be even better, as Mars’ close approach will be, well, even closer.

A algum tempo eu trouxe aqui no canal um vídeo sobre a estrela HL Tauri, onde o ALMA tinha feito uma imagem espetacular sobre o disco de poeira ao redor da estrela, mostrando gaps, ou vazios, que poderiam estar relacionados com a presença de planetas recém formados.

Porém, os astrônomos não tinham chegado a uma resposta definitiva sobre o que eram os gaps no disco de poeira, muitos acreditavam que poderia sim ser as marcas da formação de planetas, porém outros contestavam essa teoria, principalmente pelo fato da HL Tauri ser uma estrela muito jovem, com cerca de um milhão de anos, e os astrônomos acreditavam que seria necessário pelo menos 10 milhões de anos para a formação de planetas.

Esses astrônomos sugeriram outros processos para a formação dos gaps, como a mudança no tamanho da poeira, por meio da aglutinação ou da destruição, ou até mesmo pela formação da poeira, pelo congelamento das moléculas gás.

Qual teoria está correta? A formação de planetas, ou a mudança na poeira?

Os astrônomos então foram adquirir novos dados, dessa vez, os astrônomos focaram na análise do gás ao redor da estrela para entender assim a natureza do disco. A ideia deles era a seguinte, se os gaps no disco de poeira fossem provocados pela variação na propriedade da poeira, isso não afetaria o gás diretamente, já se os gaps fossem formados pela gravidade de planetas em formação, isso também afetaria o gás, criando gaps no gás também.

Utilizando os dados públicos do ALMA de 2014 a equipe de astrônomos extraiu as emissões de moléculas de gás e utilizou uma nova técnica de processamento dos dados.

Aliando o processamento dos dados com as novas informações extraídas eles chegaram a conclusão de que existem também gaps no disco de gás, e esses gaps coincidem com os do disco de poeira. Isso suporta a ideia de que esses vazios no disco, são sim as marcas deixadas pela formação de planetas, e pelo fato dos vazios tanto no disco de poeira como no disco de gás se ajustarem tão bem, desfavorece muito a ideia de uma variação somente na poeira.

A HL Tauri possui dois gaps no seu disco, um mais interno e um mais externo. O mais interno provavelmente se deve à formação de um planeta com uma massa equivalente a 0.8 vezes a massa de Júpiter.

Enquanto que o gap externo pode ser que exista devido à formação de um planeta com uma massa equivalente a 2.1 vezes a massa de Júpiter. Porém os resultados para esse disco mais externo são carregados de muita incerteza, e novas informações serão necessárias para que se possa ter certeza do que está acontecendo ali.

Por enquanto, uma conclusão importante dessa pesquisa é que de acordo com os dados, a formação de planetas parece acontecer bem antes do que se previam nos modelos anteriormente. Com mais dados sobre esse tipo de disco e sobre esses gaps, se poderá ter certeza disso, e os modelos poderão então ser reescritos, para melhor representar a formação de planetas.

More Than Just Drawings

Artist and graphic designer Mike Okuda may not be a household name, but you’re more familiar with his work than you know. Okuda’s artistic vision has left a mark here at NASA and on Star Trek. The series debuted 50 years ago in September 1966 and the distinctive lines and shapes of logos and ships that he created have etched their way into the minds of fans and inspired many.  

Flight Ops

The Flight Operations patch has a lengthy history, the original version of which dates to the early 1970s. Having designed a version of the patch, Okuda had some insights about the evolution of the design.

“The original version of that emblem was designed around 1972 by Robert McCall and represented Mission Control. It later changed to Mission Operations. I did the 2004 version, incorporating the space station, and reflecting the long-term goals of returning to the Moon, then on to Mars and beyond. I later did a version intended to reflect the new generation of spacecraft that are succeeding the shuttle, and most recently the 2014 version reflecting the merger of Mission Operations with the Astronaut Office under the new banner Flight Operations.”

“The NASA logos and patches are an important part of NASA culture,” Okuda said. “They create a team identity and they focus pride on a mission.”

In July 2009, Okuda received the NASA Exceptional Public Service Medal, which is awarded to those who are not government employees, but have made exceptional contributions to NASA’s mission. Above, Okuda holds one of the mission patches he designed, this one for STS-125, the final servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope.

Orion

Among the other patches that Okuda has designed for us, it one for the Orion crew exploration vehicle. Orion is an integral of our Journey to Mars and is an advanced spacecraft that will take our astronauts deeper into the solar system than ever before. 

Okuda’s vision of space can be seen in the Star Trek series through his futuristic set designs, a vision that came from his childhood fascination with the space program.

O Telescópio Espacial Hubble das agências espaciais, NASA e ESA lançou uma imagem que lembra muito um sabre de luz, só que esse é cósmico. O momento não podia ser melhor, coincidindo com a semana de lançamento do filme Star Wars 7 – O Despertar da Força. No centro da imagem, parcialmente obscurecida por um manto escuro de poeira, uma estrela adolescente atira jatos gêmeos no espaço, demonstrando o poder das forças no universo.

O sabre de luz cósmico localiza-se não numa galáxia, muito, muito distante, mas sim dentro da própria Via Láctea. Mais precisamente, ele reside dentro de um pedaço turbulento do espaço conhecido como complexo de nuvem molecular Orion B, que está localizado a apenas 1350 anos-luz de distância da Terra na constelação de Orion.

Lembrando muito o sabre de luz duplo usado por Darth Maul no Episódio I de Star Wars, o espetacular jato gêmeo de material cruzando a imagem incrível, está sendo emitido de uma estrela recém-formada que está obscurecida da visão, coberta por uma gás e poeira.

Quando as estrelas se formam dentro das gigantescas nuvens gasosas, parte do material ao redor colapsa formando um disco em rotação que circula a estrela que acabou de nascer, conhecida como protoestrelas. Esse disco é onde, por exemplo, um potencial sistema planetário pode se formar. Contudo nesse estágio inicial, a estrela está cheia de apetite. O gás do disco cai na protoestrela como uma chuva, e assim, a estrela desperta e os jatos do gás energizado a partir dos seus polos são expelidos em direções opostas.

A “Força” é intensa com esses jatos gêmeos, seu efeito no ambiente demonstra o verdadeiro poder do “Lado Escuro”, com uma explosão mais violenta do que toda a frota armada e o poder operacional de batalha da Estrela da Morte. À medida que eles se afastam em alta velocidade, frentes de choque supersônico se desenvolvem ao longo dos jatos e o calor do gás ao redor chega a milhares de graus.

Além disso, à medida que os jatos colidem com o gás ao redor e com a poeira, e limpa vastas regiões do espaço, eles criam ondas de choques curvas. Essas ondas de choque são as marcas dos Objetos Herbig-Haro (HH), aglomerados de nebulosidade, contorcidos. O proeminente Objeto Herbig-Haro, mostrado na imagem é o HH 24.

Logo à direita da estrela, um par de pontos brilhantes de luz podem ser vistos. Esses pontos são estrelas jovens mostrando seus próprios sabres de luz porém fracos. Uma fonte camuflada, escondida, somente detectável em ondas de rádio, criou um túnel através da nuvem escura na parte superior esquerda da imagem, com um fluxo mais largo, lembrando o “o raio da força”.

Todos esses jatos, fazem do HH 24, a concentração mais densa de jatos HH conhecida em uma pequena região. Metade dos jatos HH que foram registrados nessa região foram registrados na luz visível, e aproximadamente o mesmo número na luz infravermelha. As observações do Hubble para essa imagem foram realizadas na luz infravermelha, que permite que o telescópio possa espiar através do gás e da poeira que protege as estrelas recém-nascidas e capture uma clara visão dos objetos HH que os astrônomos estão procurando.

Let History Never Forget the Name Enterprise

Just as the captains of the fictional 24th century Starfleet blazed a trail among the stars, the space shuttle Enterprise helped pave the way for future space exploration. 

Fifty years ago, Star Trek debuted with the USS Enterprise as the main space-faring vessel used in much of the Star Trek universe. As such, the vessel holds a treasured place in the hearts of Star Trek fans and is as much of a character in the show as Kirk and Spock. Over three different series and a total of 14 seasons on TV and 13 feature films, the iterations of Enterprise have captured the imaginations and provided inspiration for its fans across the globe. 

This brief history of the shuttle tells the tale of humanity’s first reusable spacecraft. Space shuttles were first built in the late 1970s and were flown in space from 1981 to 2011. Their missions ranged from helping to build the International Space Station to repairing the Hubble Space Telescope.   

It’s All In The Name

The first shuttle was originally to be named Constitution, celebrating the country’s bicentennial and was to be unveiled to the public on Constitution Day, Sept. 17, 1976. However, a massive letter-writing campaign by Star Trek fans prompted President Gerald Ford to suggest the change. In the above photo, we see the shuttle Enterprise rolled out in Palmdale, California, with cast members of Star Trek on Sept. 17, 1976.

This circular red, white and blue emblem was  the official insignia for the Space Shuttle Approach and Landing Test flights and became a model for future space shuttle mission patch designs, including placing the names of the crew on the patch . The four astronauts listed on the patch are: 

Fred Haise., commander of the first crew 

Charles Fullerton, pilot of the first crew 

Joe Engle, commander of the second crew 

Dick Truly, pilot of the second crew 

First Impressions

In this image, Enterprise makes its first appearance mated to its boosters as it is slowly rolled to the huge Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at Kennedy Space Center. Although she never flew in space, shuttle Enterprise underwent a series of fit and function checks on the pad in preparation for the first launch of its sister craft, Columbia.

Enterprise sits on Launch Complex 39 at Kennedy Space Center undergoing tests after completing its 3.5 mile journey from the VAB. Have you ever wondered why Enterprise never went into space? Converting Enterprise from a training vehicle to space-worthy one was too cost prohibitive, our engineers felt.
