PREACH IT!!!

a criticism I see of sao is often along the lines of “what’s the message? that video games are better than real life? that being trapped in the game was Good, Actually? that doesn’t apply to real life at all. that’s a useless thought experiment akin to contemplating the ethics of fucking your clone.”

the way the aincrad arc was about how you have to find love and happiness in the here & now, no matter how bleak things are. because when fighting for a cause, it’s so easy to deny yourself joy until that far-off dream is achieved; you tell yourself you’ll rest after you’ve saved enough money for early retirement. or when capitalism is over and homelessness eradicated. or when you’ve finally reached peak physical form. or when the war is over.

but so many people die before that happens. or they live to see it but shortly succumb to trauma or just the ravages of time. all those years spent fighting for your cause, but now you’ve won you’re an adult and you never had a chance to have any semblance of a childhood. or now you’ve grown so accustomed to misery, you don’t know how to treat happiness- so accustomed to pressure and hatred, you’re cruel and harsh to the people around you.

in sao, life went on, in its strange way. people went fishing. they got married. they cooked and ate for pleasure. they did quests and events for fun. people sarcastically say “they’re trapped in a death game and all they can think about is buying a cottage and fucking?” as if there wasn’t a very direct reasoning for this in the plot. them experiencing a sort of burnout, as well as distrust in the system as it was. them realising their own mortality, that they could be killed any day now; that it’s better to die in love than to die miserable.

I think Lucanis is a man of actions, not words.

Lucanis has the opportunity to take care of someone for the first time (or for the first time in a long time).

He will…

Protect your sleep, no matter how short it is.

Not just cook food for you and other companions - make sure your plate is full and you eat enough.

Check that your wounds are healing. That his treatment helps.

Know that your armor is intact and your sword is always ready for a battle. But the best armor for you is Lucanis himself.

Believe that the people you travel with won't let you down when he's not around. He'll explain them in private how to best watch your back.

Try to make sure that you don’t stain your clothes with the blood of enemies. Your hands. It is easier for him to live with the understanding that only his hands are unclean.

Wish silently that where your foot steppes the ground is firm. That the sky above your head is bright.

He can't say that.

The most he can say at the beginning of journey is:

"I’ll protect you".

Need to understand that the promise of protection from him is something that you will carry through entire life.

But Lucanis has no idea that his greatest feat is just…

To live for his friends. To be alive for you.

So Lance is 100% the kind of guy to just walk into Keith’s room when he’s had a bad day and plop on him

Like, right on top of him

They aren’t even dating yet, this is just a Thing™ for Lance

Keith was just lazily scrolling through his phone and BAM

Arms full of cute, sad boy

He’d ask Lance wth and when Lance tells him it was a bad day he just

Goes with it

Because that’s Klance culture; Keith can’t reject Lance it is just not possible

So Keith continues scrolling through his phone

Only now he’s taken to scrolling specifically through memes and cute animal videos

Both of them are Lance Weaknesses™

and Keith knows that

It doesn’t take long for Lance to glance up at Keith’s phone and crack a smile at the meme currently displayed there

Keith can’t help the small smile that graces his own face when it happens

Then Keith plays a video of kittens

and Lance friggin coos

And Keith is so Gone™ for this boy that his face breaks out into a full-on grin

Boy’s Whipped™

They just lay like that for a while, Lance’s mood slowly getting better the more cute animals and stupid memes he sees

And Keith’s happy smile is just fond and wide

Because a Happy Lance™ is a Happy Keith™

After they start dating, these become full-blown cuddle sessions filled with gentle kisses and soft caresses

Keith had created a folder specifically for things that would cheer Lance up

Lance doesn’t know this, but the folder was created before they even started dating

The day Lance finds the folder creation date, Keith explains that he just wanted Lance to be happy and took steps to make sure that happened

Lance doesn’t let go of his boyfriend for the rest of the day

I totally get the strict cullen parent headcanons, HOWEVER I don't think he would be

all throughout dai people make jokes abt how he's a stick in the mud, sera calls him general uptight, etc etc but he's so soft for the inquisitor

I note how his voice softens when speaking with the inquisitor. if you side with the mages and you go to shrine of dumat, when speaking with him he's serious, some anger towards Samson in his voice, but when you ask why he's coming his voice gets so soft saying he'd sleep better knowing he was by your side

he gets vulnerable before sending you off to corypheus, praying you return safely. he tells you he doesn't dance, but for you he will. he offers you his most prized possession for luck. the silly lil boyish smile he has after his kissing scene

there's also his hug scenes!!!!! when you return from defeating corypheus, before you go off into the eluvian for the last time, when he's praying for your safe return in the chapel. they're so tender...

in non-romantic instances, he's happy, joking and relaxed when he plays chess with dorian, whom he considers a friend. he starts off grumbling during wicked grace but loosens up and laughs with people he trusts

ofc he's a stern commander, he takes work very seriously, but around people he loves, cares about, or just people he trusts, he melts a little. I think there's that untapped softness within him

he wouldn't be a strict dad, I think he'd melt for his kids and they'd have him wrapped around their lil fingers 🫶🏽
