The generation gap between me and ppl of my own age
I just wanted to share a post by a reddit user (u/sleepyfriend) about something that many people overlook as part of Endeavor’s earlier characterization because things get lost in translation into English:
In Endeavor’s conversation with All Might during the Sports Festival arc, the English translations had Endeavor refer to Shouto as “it” or “that” or whatever. Ever wonder how this was phrased in Japanese? ‘I will make that(“are” as opposed to “aitsu” or “anoko” you would expect for a child) into a hero that surpasses you. He’s an “offspring” I created for that purpose.’ The offspring bit is the part I want to focus. While the word usually used for a child is “ko(子)”, the one Endeavor uses here is “ko(仔)”. “Ko(仔)” is a word specifically reserved for animal offspring. It’s a blatant misuse of the word, clearly intended to tell us that this man views Shouto as a successful breeding project rather than a child. All Might would not have picked up on this though, since “ko(子)” and “ko(仔)” sounds exactly the same. Only the Japanese manga readers had the privilege of noticing this.
Between this and the way he refers to Shouto’s siblings, I want to point out that, not counting the post-Kamino manga, the Todoroki children have spent 15-22(or more??) years being regarded as mere tools for Enji’s ambition. He dehumanized them before they were even born. He refers to his ‘prized’ child in the same way a person would refer to their favorite milking cow. Just an ‘interesting’ fact about him that I think should be shared.

I keep seeing this cute Dad Might picture in my head – clear as a photograph, I tell you.
Just imagine: It’s winter, and cold, and for some reason, Izuku and Toshinori take the train to get home from wherever they have been. It’s already late, the train almost empty, and Izuku is freezing up. So in search for some warmth, he cuddles against Toshinori’s side. Toshinori, you have to know, is a living, walking heater. So he’s the perfect source of warmth for the freezing, tired boy.
Speaking of tired: Somehow, Izuku manages to fall asleep on Toshinori.
Toshinori startles when he realizes that Izuku is literally using him as a pillow, and spits blood in embarrassment and flustered surprise. But once he sees how content sleeping Izuku looks, he can’t bring himself to move the boy away. Instead he adjusts, making sure that the boy is comfortable leaning against his bony shoulder and not going to slip off, and proceeds to watch the lights passing by at high-speed outside.
(Or at least, he pretends to. He quickly comes to realize that watching Izuku sleeping, breathing evenly and scrunching up his nose and murmuring from time to time, is way more interesting.)
His character page said Nighteye was designed like this to be the Japanese counterpart to All Might's American image...but there may be more to it than that.
He's got this gangly/snake-like body and a shady salaryman image when the the most significant act of this character was to try to coerce a teenager into a contract intended to make him give up on all of his dreams.
Also, there's that One for All fire imagery again. Nighteye seems to view All Might/One for All as this all encompassing bright and shining light. Yet he despised and couldn't understand that this almost divine shining light was also a flame of martyrdom. He didn't grapple with the idea that One for All was a kindling spark in the hopes of a better future for most of it's history because he had only ever seen what he believed was the perfect version.
side note more people should make characters schizospec. just for shits and also because everybody loves us forever
