Was looking through my DeviantArt and people seemed to really like this one (I am people also), so here’s a reupload on a website that isn’t totally dead! Original description under the cut :)

Based off a sketch a did a while ago, I love these two. This old nerd could really use some Mabel pampering to help along with the healing process.

Original sketch involved her having painted his nails as well but it didn't look right in the limited palette, maybe next time </3

Oh, and speaking of which, I love this palette! I wasn't sure how it'd go at first but it's really nice and cozy, perfect for this scene.

I went so overboard omg but I wanted to try underpainting :Dc See if you can guess what color was the base for each of em! Reasoning for design choices beneath the cut.

Teeth are retractable so as to not puncture the eye when not in use

Lashes are retractable because I couldn't figure out what else to do with them LOL they're pretty thick whiskers and so he'd have some trouble if they stayed in the way, but having them fully retracted would, I imagine, risk them getting stuck or the pores plugging with oil/dirt

Whether or not his tongue is forked varies in canon, just as his blood color does, so I just chose the ones I prefer! I do really like it when people give him blue blood but I think in subtler hues it can make him look a lil nauseous so it's easier for me to work with red

He cleans himself with his tongue because he's a gross little beast and can't just take a shower or something. Ok but really I just thought it was cute what are you a cop leave me alone

Every villain needs to be able to have claws it's like a rule somewhere I think

The second set of eyelids serve to protect the optic nerve but are mainly something I added partially for emoting purposes and partially because of how many times the animators do this thing where his lashes don't follow his lids and it drives me less insane to have a hc about it

Wooooo another character ref! Two in one day, actually; what is going on???

This is Binx and she's a professional racer! Those funky little wheels on her feet kinda work like roller skates. Her racing name is The Tootsie-Roller :D

She was designed pretty much entirely by my buddy Devilbinx! fr usually I change a couple things up when I redraw refs but she is already just perfect, didn't have to do much of anything

Found this in my Procreate files! Funky experimental almost automatic piece I drew last year while hanging out with my buds in California. I had just bought a frikin adorable pair of cat squeaky toys and loved them so much that one became my muse for the evening :]

Man I think that's the second time that the punchline to one of my drawings was a character watching Pickle Rick. Idk what that says about me as a person (besides the fact that I wanna go back to 2017 [if that ain't a red flag idk what is])

A couple bats to wrap up the year. There was gonna be more but, just my luck, my tablet's pen is malfunctioning real bad and I'm on the other side of the globe in New Zealand right now. Oh, well; expect more when that's taken care of!

In terms of chiropteran diversity they may not be the most dramatic examples, but these species are in separate classifications entirely. The left is an eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis, though I did take some liberties with the colors) in the Vespertillionidae family and the right being some indiscriminate funnel-eared bat (specifically a Natalus sp.) from Natalidae. It is worth noting that both families are in the same superfamily, though, but pff, that's not even a real word.

It's no secret that I love my lasiurine bats (though I really broke the mould this time with a L. borealis instead of L. cinereus, woah gotta slow down there) so she was my first on the sheet. I'm already pretty adept in terms of lasiurine anatomy so she was more of a shading test which I'm rather happy with! They're so whiskery 🥺

At first the second bust was supposed to be of a generic Myotis species, but I thought that might be a bit boring (not that I don't love them too of course but my sketchbooks are full of them) so I went with a different pointy-faced little fella. Or, well, I think my thought process was more like "what's another species that when its mouth is open just looks like :V" but same deal. Funnel-eared bats are a very small family and you can tell they aren't very far-removed from vesper bats, but it's their subtler differences that interested me. They have these really funny moustaches, b-shaped skulls and almost woollen fur. They're also a more traditionally "ugly" species and that especially made me want to showcase how lovely they are.

I do wonder if the eyes are maybe a little uncanny, though. I intended for anthros of species without visible scleras to remain partially faithful to that and have enlarged irises/pupils but I dunno, looks kind of cartoony here, haha. Oh well, still plenty of room to experiment!

I'm very happy with these! The difference in fur texture especially was something I didn't think I'd be able to pull off, but I think I nailed it (without references, too! Booyah!). I hope to bring you guys some more underappreciated species as well as showcases of diversity soon; there are so, so many bats out there to love and they're all so different.
