The Sole Survivor’s Sentinel rank has nothing to do with Maxson’s trust

So if you play through the BoS ending, you get promoted to Sentinel for your part in helping take down the Institute. One criticism about this is that it seems incredibly strange that Maxson would come to trust you so quickly, especially if your decision in Blind Betrayal was to go against his orders. He even promotes you to Paladin immediately after completely Blind Betrayal, no matter what decision you made. It seems way too sudden and that Maxson is putting too much trust in you that has no basis whatsoever, something that reads like bad writing (and well, considering Bethany “four dead wives” Esda, I wouldn’t be too critical of anyone who says it’s just bad writing).

But what if your promotions don’t actually have anything to do with trusting you?

Let’s look at what happens after Blind Betrayal. No matter what happens during the quest, you get the same outcome; you are promoted to Paladin, you are given Danse’s quarters on the Prydwen, and you are given his power armor to use as your own. You effectively take Danse’s position, getting his rank, his quarters, his armor, literally everything he owned that was left on the Prydwen. You replace Danse in the Brotherhood. There’s a void in the chain of command that needs to be filled, so you’re put there.

And then, the promotion to Sentinel. The Sentinel armor was already on the Prydwen, so Maxson clearly intended to name a Sentinel while the BoS was in the Commonwealth. And if he was intending to name a Sentinel, he probably also had a person in mind already, because Maxson isn’t psychic and probably didn’t see you coming. But who was he considering?

Remember back to Danse’s quarters, which are now yours. Around his quarters are Maxson’s room and Kells’ room, the Elder of the Brotherhood and the Captain of the Prydwen, respectively. Danse’s room was right next to the two highest-ranking officers on the ship. That part of the ship is effectively the officer’s quarters. Danse is a Paladin, but he’s not as high up on the chain of command that he’d be equated with the highest leadership. So what’s his room doing there then?

So we’ve got a) Danse’s room right next to the rooms of the two highest-ranking leaders on the ship, b) the likely intention of Maxson granting the Sentinel rank to someone on the ship, and c) you replacing Danse in the chain of command.

Danse was going to be Maxson’s Sentinel, hence why his room was so close to the other high-ranking officers’ rooms. You’ve replaced Danse’s place in the Brotherhood, as established by you taking his rank, his room, and his belongings. So, as Danse’s replacement, you become Sentinel after the Institute falls.

It has nothing to do with whether Maxson trusts you or not. Maxson likely doesn’t know how to emotionally deal with Danse’s absence in a healthy way. The closest way to coping he has is to fill the gap with something else and act like nothing is wrong. He makes you the Sentinel not because he trusts you, but because he’s mentally replaced Danse with you.

That’s what the Brotherhood taught him, after all. When you lose someone in command, you just replace them. Just like how fallen Elders are replaced with new Elders, Maxson replaces a fallen Danse with you.

FALLOUT 4 SPOILERS

I’m still scratching my head over the “synth Shaun” theory (I’m actually trying to disprove it) and so far, I still believe it’s possible.

Thanks to Nick Valentine, Kellogg, and Curie, we know it’s possible for a being’s consciousness to be placed in a synth body and inhabit it.

The original Nick Valentine had his memories placed inside the synth Nick (though I highly doubt he “volunteered” for this proceedure). In a sense, he lives on in synth form, with only a few memories of his past life. Nick Valentine was probably an early attempt to see just how closely a synth could copy a human. Perhaps Nick had too much of his own personality and was chucked out as a failure.

Because his memories were also inserted in Nick, Kellogg’s consciousness lived on in Nick as well, if only for a short time.

Then there’s Curie, a robot with limited A.I., whose consciousness is placed in a synth on life support. Once Curie enters a synthetic human frame, she is able to inhabit it and even develops more human feelings. She also shares the memories of C2 but maintains her own seperate personality regardless.

So we know that synths can act as hosts for another’s consciousness, be it human or robotic.

We also know that synths can have their memories wiped, be it for the smallest of offenses whilst living with the Institute, or after they have fled so that they can begin a new life.

I could easily see Father doing something similar to ensure that he 1) survives the cancer that he insisted on stopping treatment for (because this was his plan all along) and 2) can live out the childhood that was stolen from him without memories of his life in the Institute.

I’m still trying to figure out how he would have done it, but there’s no denying the possibility. The options exist in this world, and it makes no sense for the leader of the Institute – the place that invented this technology – to not have access to the option or make use of it.

Right now I’m thinking that maybe Father waited until the Sole Survivor left the room (while he was on his death bed) to plant his consciousness in the synth Shaun (or maybe when he died, he was actually leaving his body to enter the synth boy). Once he awoke inside the synth version of himself, he activated memories he had created for the boy and wiped his own memories. So he gets to live as the boy he never got to be, free of the Institute and finally with a loving parent.

I’m starting to believe this was his plan all along. Why make a synth version of his child self? Why test to see if the synth version and his parent could possibly form a bond?

I also think that having the synth Shaun live with Kellogg served more than one purpose. Sending synth Shaun out into the world not only served as bait to draw the Sole Survivor, but it was also a test to see if synth Shaun could 1) pass as a human and 2) survive in the broken world with only a human protector.

Once SS killed Kellogg, it was Father’s intention all along that they would take Kellogg’s place as the protector and caretaker of his synth self.

So from the SS’s perspective, the whole experiment looked cold and cruel. Why bait your parent and put them through that hell? But for Shaun, he was killing two birds with one stone. Not only did he ensure the two of you got vengeance on Kellogg, but he also ensured his own survival and that the two of you got to live as a family.

Even if none of this is true … I still like the idea a lot.
