Happy Birthday ♡James Byron Dean♡ {Feb. 8, 1931 - Sept. 30, 1955}

This photo-series is an ode to African American woman and their expression of femininity. Being raised by African-American women; I felt this was the best way to highlight this body. PURPLE is also a project that honors my great grand mothers existence. Purple is her favorite color, therefore it is befitting. Purple is a color often associated with royalty and ambition while also representing wisdom and independence. The images captured and women depicted in each photo are reflective of the multiple meanings of the color purple. PURPLE was shot in South Philadelphia; the neighborhood in which I was raised. Some shots were in the living room of my great grandmothers home and the others are in one of the many abandoned city lots in that section of the city. The images capture the beauty and multiple generations of “blackness” and womanhood. All of the women in the photos are members of my intermediate family. The photos show how these women of different ages express individuality and interpret what it means to be an African American woman
