My brain is still not adjusted to the idea that it’s the “2020s” like someone will say something so profound like “Megaman 11 came out in 2018” and I’ll think to myself how long ago was that? I could’ve sworn it came out like one or two years ago… and then it’s 6 whole years ago and I just wanna crawl into a small hole and feed off the planets nutrients to build power and generate an invasive hive mind infection for the sole purpose of erasing the idea of years from the minds of the earth…
I hate feeling old…
Reblogging so I can read this later :)
Interesting stuff!!!
Something I try to keep in mind when making art that looks vintage is keeping a limited color pallette. Digital art gives you a very wide, Crisp scope of colors, whereas traditional art-- especially older traditional art-- had a very limited and sometimes dulled use of color.
This is a modern riso ink swatch, but still you find a similar and limited selection of colors to mix with. (Mixing digitally as to emulate the layering of ink riso would be coloring on Multiply, and layering on top of eachother 👉)
If you find some old prints, take a closer look and see if you can tell what colors they used and which ones they layered... a lot of the time you'll find yellow as a base!
Misprints can really reveal what colors were used and where, I love misprints...
Something else I keep in the back of my mind is: how the human eye perceives color on paper vs. a screen. Ink and paint soaks into paper, it bleeds, stains, fades over time, smears, ect... the history of a piece can show in physical wear. What kind of history do you want to emulate? Misprinted? Stained? Kept as clean as possible, but unable to escape the bluing damages of the sun? It's one of my favorite things about making vintage art. Making it imperfect!
You can see the bleed, the wobble of the lines on the rug, the fading, the dirt... beautiful!!
Thinking in terms of traditional-method art while drawing digital can help open avenues to achieving that genuine, vintage look!
Sorry I haven’t posted much art in a while… I’ve kinda gotten wrapped around it and I’m trying to improve by a certain margin before posting again…
For some reason i have a habit of setting arbitrary limits on myself before i do something… such as reaching a certain skill level in drawing before sharing it or 100% a game before i move on to play something else… But more than that… with art in particular, i feel a deep yearning to improve… to reach some kind of gold standard… I know it’s not healthy but… sometimes i feel like i can only value myself by my skills and accomplishments rather than anything inherent to myself… it feels like i have to EARN any respect from myself or others because it’s not free… and right now I haven’t earned it yet cause nothing I’ve made is good enough yet…
Dang these are pretty!!!
thinking about the time when movie posters and book covers had detailed original paintings made for them compared to what we have now
Been thinking a bit about Megaman 8
To be fully honest, I thought it was pretty good! Although I did play the game from the collection on the switch so maybe that improved it or something… If you wanna talk about a not so great Megaman game you gotta talk about 5…
8 is loads better than 5! 5 has one good weapon and it’s Gyroman’s. Not to mention 8 has crazy cool ideas like the side scrolling shooter bits. The only arguably bad weapon is the soccer ball but it’s not as bad as Stone Man’s shield in 5…
Why am I talking about this at 2 am? Idk it just popped into my head and I felt like stating my opinion…
I had a class in the magical world of
GAME DEVELOPMENT
And our end of year project was a fully complete game. And at the time I was really into games like Donkey Kong, Mario bros, and Annalynn.
Unfortunately,
Due to my lack of know-how the game was never “complete” per say. Rather I got far enough with some stand in characters to make the passing grade. Regardless, here is some of the character art I made while planning… who knows, maybe I’ll resurrect the idea in the future…
Edit: Added my art of the stand in I used…
Finally returning to tumblr! And what better way to return than with a small comment about a Pizza Hut!
So I’m in El Salvador on vacation, but I’m originally from the STATES. And I’m not a big “Pizza Hut” kinda guy.
But you crave whatcha crave… and when we get there it’s got a-
