ISOPOD MY LOVE
Giant isopods are deep-sea crustaceans that look like enormous, armored pillbugs, some growing up to 20 inches long-a result of deep-sea gigantism. These slow-moving scavengers can survive years without food, feasting on dead animals that fall to the ocean floor and curling into a protective ball when threatened. With ancient origins and unique adaptations, giant isopods are among the most intriguing and mysterious inhabitants of the deep ocean.
(Oh to be a bug girl, taking a nap π)
I work with kids (around ages 2 to 5 normally) and hereβs a list of Crazy Things Kids Say/Do from this week:
β’
3-yr-old boy, pointing to a paper towel in my hand: βI want to eat that!β
Me, looking at him with confusion because I know this boy knows what a paper towel is: ββ¦this is a paper towel.β
Boy, with a sigh so big and heavy it would rival that of a grown man who just got told the bar was out of his favorite beer after an exhausting work week: βoookaayyyyβ¦πππβ
β’
5-year-old girl who has never talked like this a day in her life, running to her mother with all the fervor of a Victorian child who just discovered a ghost in her old rickety house: βMama! Mama, come quick! Something strange has happened!β
(The strange thing was that the lights had been turned off in the part of the building that we werenβt currently using and it was Slightly Darker than Usual.)
β’
Little girl, finding me on the playground and running up to me with wide eyes, practically whispering: βDo you want some mulch candy?β
Me, playing along: βooo, mulch candy??β
The girl silently puts a singular piece of mulch into my hand and runs away looking suspicious, leaving me to wonder if I just participated in some kind of illegal mulch deal.
β’
There was a little boy who kept wanting to wash his hands for no reason which was fine and I wouldβve let him do if he didnβt keep trying to walk into the bathroom while there was another kid in there. So after a few times of this he was a little annoyed and to get back at me he rolled this big toy truck over to the sink, somehow managed to lift it over his head and get it onto the counter, then rolled it into the sink, and just stood there looking at the Truck In The Sink with the most smug look I have ever seen.
ed zitron, a tech beat reporter, wrote an article about a recent paper that came out from goldman-sachs calling AI, in nicer terms, a grift. it is a really interesting article; hearing criticism from people who are not ignorant of the tech and have no reason to mince words is refreshing. it also brings up points and asks the right questions:
if AI is going to be a trillion dollar investment, what trillion dollar problem is it solving?
what does it mean when people say that AI will "get better"? what does that look like and how would it even be achieved? the article makes a point to debunk talking points about how all tech is misunderstood at first by pointing out that the tech it gets compared to the most, the internet and smartphones, were both created over the course of decades with roadmaps and clear goals. AI does not have this.
the american power grid straight up cannot handle the load required to run AI because it has not been meaningfully developed in decades. how are they going to overcome this hurdle (they aren't)?
people who are losing their jobs to this tech aren't being "replaced". they're just getting a taste of how little their managers care about their craft and how little they think of their consumer base. ai is not capable of replacing humans and there's no indication they ever will because...
all of these models use the same training data so now they're all giving the same wrong answers in the same voice. without massive and i mean EXPONENTIALLY MASSIVE troves of data to work with, they are pretty much as a standstill for any innovation they're imagining in their heads
NUDIBRANCHS!!!!!π£οΈπ£οΈ
I love them so much I want to put them on my FACE and love them forever you donβt understand theyβre so PRETTY and cute

I really appreciate the clarification that your specific land-crawling sharks DO in fact like to eat humans (as currently existing sharks do not in fact like to eat or bite humans and it really pisses me off when people assume all sharks operate by Jaws Logic and are bloodthirsty monsters)
You have to choose a new animal to exist on earth right now but it HAS to be both as aggressive and dangerous to humans as a hippopotamus.
WEDNESDAY AND TYLER WORKING TOGETHER TO SOLVE A NEW MYSTERY!! WEDNESDAY BREAKING HIM OUT OF WILLOWHILL!!! PLEASE!!!!
I love just how unbothered she looks at Hyde Tyler...
She just like, "Really, we're doing this again?" π
But more importantly...HOW DID HE GET OUT OF HIS HOLDING CELL?
DID WEDNESDAY LET HIM OUT??
Hey everyone, I know it's going to be a busy day for a lot of people, but Google enrolled everyone over 18 into their AI program automatically.
If you have a google account, first go to gemini.google.com/extensions and turn everything off.
Then you need to go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini and turn off all Gemini activity tracking. You do have to do them in that order to make sure it works.
Honestly, I'm not sure how long this will last, but this should keep Gemini off your projects for a bit.
I saw this over on bluesky and figured it would be good to spread on here. It only takes a few minutes to do.
