Soundwave knew exactly what happened. He didn't want to believe it.

Ignoring the stabbing pain in his chassis and spark, he scooped up the cassettes and bolted for cover. Blaster fire rained down on the battlefield around him. Autobots and Decepticons were scrapping each other for the last bits of energon they had available. He already knew this was a pointless battle with more energon spilled than they would have acquired. Starscream was a good fighter, and he was cunning, but he was no leader.

With Megatron turned traitor, they had no other choice. They were starving. Malfunctionioning.

Soundwave was too starved of energon to even be able to protect his own cassettes. He had tried to eject Rumble to send him out into battle. They could have used his pile drivers. But something went wrong with Soundwave's ejection systems. Rumble… he'd gotten caught on something. There was an explosion. They were supposed to be safe with him, but he'd killed one, injured the other, and damaged himself.

He would never forgive Megatron for abandoning them. For leaving them to die.

Soundwave ducked into the forest, out of sight. He set his cassettes down as gently as he could without jostling their injuries. Frenzy groaned in pain. Good, Soundwave could work with that. That meant she was still alive. The pink splatter across her red frame wasn't promising. Neither was the damage to her exterior plating. But she was alive.

Rumble…

Soundwave didn't want to look. He didn't want to think about it. And he didn't want to do what he was about to in order to save Frenzy. Rumble was already gone, he wasn't going to lose her too. He just hoped that, in the Allspark, Rumble understood his desperation.

By the time Soundwave finished fitting Frenzy's frame with undamaged parts from Rumble, Frenzy was more purple than red. He hoped she'd forgive him too. He couldn't imagine waking up and being fitted with spare parts from his dead twin.

A roar of jet engines overhead caught Soundwave's attention. Thundercracker landed in front of him with an armful of energon cubes. He saw the grimace in his optics when he looked down at the mess before him.

"They've called in reinforcements," Thundercracker told him. "We need to retreat. Starscream won't back down until he's dead or captured."

"Go," Soundwave said. "I'll comm the others, and we'll rendezvous back at the base. Tell Knockout to set up a medical bay."

Thundercracker glanced down at Frenzy. He nodded wordlessly before transforming and flying off.

Soundwave would make Megatron pay for this if it was the last thing he did.
