SooYona and the Hairpin

I was reading chapter 62 of Akayona and…

We, of course, run into Yona’s hairpin. And we are given a small flashback of when Soo-won gave it to her. I just want to reflect on this hairpin and Yona’s feelings and the development through this manga.

First off, I want to acknowledge how much of a CORE and significant element this hairpin is. Lets start from when Soo-won gives it to her.

This hairpin was given to Yona on her sixteenth birthday and there are lots of things the reader may not acknowledge. Firstly, this hairpin is EXPENSIVE and HIGH QUALITY. So many people realize that, therefore it is seen as a beautiful gift and beautiful item, something a princess would totally own.

What I think is important is Soo-won took the time to search for an item for Yona’s birthday and came across this hairpin (while plotting his murder in Il). (If he only cared about murdering Il, why buy her a gift? Why buy her an EXPENSIVE gift?) He spent money on its quality, having thought she would like it and it would fit her. It shows how much he KNOWS yona. Like literally, Aro, a kai empire woman mentions it goes with Yona’s hair perfectly.

Now there’s two things I’ve considered with him purchasing this hairpin.

1. He did it to keep her from suspecting he would kill her father and keep this idea that soo-won is her perfect, beloved cousin and not a murderer. 2. He genuinely wanted to give something to Yona that she would like and appreciate. A gift that’s tangible and able to be shown off to others. Small enough to not be over the top but big enough to mean something.

I’ve concluded there’s a little bit of both of these in his actions. Soo-won DOES care for Yona, despite killing her father.

In soo-wins mind, king Il is evil. He’s a heinous leader and he can’t stand him. Yona, however, is someone soo-won deeply cares for, but his love for the kingdom seems to overpower his care for her.

I also want to acknowledge the fact that Soo-won had many chances to kill Yona: - Literally right after he killed Il - In the courtyard - When he met her in the earth tribe after kumji’s death (CRUCIAL PART OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP because 1) he didn’t kill Yona 2) he was shocked and relieved she was alive and so was hak 3) he hid her from judo and the guards 4) he LOWKEY said she can kill him after he finishes his duties as king 5) he tells her a very heartfelt goodbye) - When they met with lilli - When they met during the Nadai arc

Many more. BUT HE DOESNT. He does not hate Yona and he does not despise her. There is LOVE there. Certainly. Whether it be romantic or platonic, he has love for his cousin.

Back to this chapter, I’ve realized that a lot of people hate how Yona has held onto this hairpin.

But let’s reflect on why.

I’m sure many of you can relate to having a first love. Try putting yourselves in yona’s expensive customized royal shoes, okay?

Soo-won in Yona’s eyes is the definition of perfect. He’s intelligent, good looking, friendly, accepting, considerate, and incredibly optimistic.

Really, there’s no point for anyone to question his personality, especially Yona. So for years, yona’s love for him built up and up and up with every good thing he did for her and others. Who, ever in their right minds, would think that he would do any wrong, let alone murder her father? It’s such an irrational thing that it probably shocked her more than frightened her when she saw soo-won kill her father.

And JUST DAYS BEFORE, soo-won gave her something that halted her hate for her hair. He’s been in Yona’s life forever and he’s been her best friend, her crush, hell he was her mother at one point.

Soo-won literally is everything she’s always wanted. Now imagine your first love giving you something that is so thoughtful and beautiful, and then SAYS YOURE BEATIFUL ALONG WITH IT. Can you imagine?! If my first love said that, I’d cry in happiness. Seriously. Like, Yona has been in love with this guy who she deemed beyond perfect for YEARS. YEARS, she has been dancing for him, practicing the harp for him, preparing sweets and wanting to engage in dangerous activities because she was that in love with him. I mean cmon guys, Yona had it so unbelievably bad for him. Probably way worse than we did for our first loves.

He is such a crucial part of Yona’s life. She wanted to MARRY this kid and hand him the throne. Okay?

Now just imagine, IMAGINE your first love betraying you just once. And really all it took was once for him to shatter her image of him. But even though it was incredibly painful and so wrong on so many levels, she can’t forget what he was to her before and how he treated her for sixteen freaking years.

Let’s also acknowledge that 99% of the time, first loves never leave. That’s what sucks about first loves. They stay. You may move on, you may develop feelings for someone else, but first loves will always have that hold on you.

In Yona’s life, there was no other guy except for hak and he was SO much more different from soo-won. Seriously, in Yona’s head, as much as it sucks for Hak, there was NO WAY at the time that Yona would ever consider hak. Ever. No way.

And could you really blame her?

Sure, they’re both incredibly hot and great guys, but I would personally choose the guy who wasn’t an asshole to me, who didn’t tease me, and who protected me when someone important to me died as a child. (Hak probably awkwardly would’ve done the same thing, but he got OFFENDED when soo-won and Yona held hands).

Soo-won is literally Yona’s and our Prince Charming. Without even realizing it, he’s incredibly romantic and kind and loving. Like seriously guys, Soo-won is so freaking important to Yona.

That hairpin isn’t just a hairpin. It’s the precious memory of the Soo-won Yona fell in love with. It’s the precious memory of being his best friend since childhood. It’s so much more than a hairpiece.

Losing that hairpin would be accepting reality and letting go of the boy who meant the absolute world to her.

And that’s why this hairpin is so freaking important AND WHY IT WAS SO SHOCKING SHE FINALLY LET IT GO AND LET SOOWON GO.

Give Yona credit. That must’ve hurt like hell. And she did it for her dragons. Sure, from the outside, she gave away a hairpin that she liked but she literally let go of the past. She accepted that the Soo-won she knew and loved is not who he is now.

Even though that girl was a spoiled princess, she hit ROCK BOTTOM and look at the way she’s grown and developed and become a SOLID WOMAN. A WARRIOR.

No wonder Soo-won can’t move when she confronts him. No wonder Hak can’t help but brag about her. No wonder kija has a crush on her. No wonder shin-ah and yoon cry at the thought of Yona hating them or getting hurt. No wonder Zeno wants to shield her from danger. No wonder Jaeha wants to tease her.

The girl is a piece of art.

Ok but like the evil bros trio main thing is to separate and control our OTP cause last time they tried to take the throne the SoxSoo team thwarted their evilness, that's why this time they know not to underestimate our team. Yet this time I feel like our own team shot themselves in the foot like when they are on the same page they can do anything together that's why I'm excited for next week in a weird way cause team SoxSoo might be back, I think.

I love SoSoo team, I love when they do something together bc they’re incredibly strong, smart, powerful and epic, they’re force that can move mountains *starts to cry*. Also, I hope that trust will come back to Soo bc srsly what So have to do to convince her that he can be trusted? Idk, die for her? Oh, wait, he already did that! 

What is really amusing is that we all know that they’re doomed our emotional  stability as well  However, I’m so freaking excited for the next episode. So shielding Soo and Soo nursing him back to health and the kiss and definitely smth after a kiss. Yeah, I know that everything will go downhill after that, but I’m here to appreciate these small things. 

And yeah, in promo, we can see that our power couple is sitting with Ji Mong and he says “The time has come”. SoSoo team is back to make all villains suffer (they will take a break from their own suffering, I hope)

I’m an 18 year old woman with her own opinion that y’all are being incredibly petty and selfish. 

I’ve tried to stay out of this because I can’t handle the stupidity, but I’ve finally had enough. Here are some things you need to consider the next time you’re about to throw a hissy fit over Tom and Taylor.

1. First of all, both of these individuals are adults who can do whatever the hell they want.

2. You do not have the right to condemn Taylor for being a “slut” or a “man hunter”. She is a woman with all the same rights as you. Y’all can’t call yourselves feminists who believe in abortion and Marvel’s need to hire more superhero women and then turn around and do this. It’s hypocritical and wrong. And if you had her talent (and if you want to bitch about her not having talent, check out her Grammys), you would say you could date whoever she wants too.

3. Taylor is a lovely person. I had the great honor and privilege to briefly meet her during her “Red” tour in 2012. I was 14 at the time, and completely in love with her. She made me feel special and loved, and treated me like a little sister. She genuinely loves fans, and does things like surprise them, write inspiring messages to them, write a song about a 4 year old little boy named Ronan who died of cancer, and stand up for women everywhere. Not to mention she isn’t afraid to get out there and be herself.

Sound familiar?

4. You do not have the right to condemn Tom for his “recent behavior”. He has an amazing career so far because of his talent and his hard work. Admire that. And about that photo shoot, you do realize that he didn’t go out and shoot that series right after he started dating Taylor, right? It was during The Night Manager press series. The article was probably typed much closer to release though. The car in NYC? Who the hell cares? Taylor was probably just being nice, and maybe the car happened to be in NYC, maybe not. Does it matter? Also, who the hell cares if he went to a Selena Gomez concert? Selena, like Taylor, is a lovely person and performer, and Tom is probably trying to get to know Taylor’s friends, just like any good boyfriend. They’re having fun. LET THEM HAVE FUN WITHOUT BEING PETTY AND RIDICULOUS.

5. Be happy for them. Relationships in the spotlight are hard enough. Having their own fans turn against them is the last thing they need.

8. Do critique the headlines. Objectifying Tom and slut-shaming Taylor is ridiculous. The media is insane. So make a difference. Say something about it. Defend Tom, Taylor, or both. If you’re a fan, act like it instead of a toddler throwing a hissy fit.

Today, I fucked up... by thinking my cat wanted to sleep next to me

I woke up less than an hour ago to hissing and barking. I then heard my bluetick coonhound jump down from the bed and felt the tabby cat run up my spine and sit on my head. (Normally, my dog and cat will compete for bed real estate to be closer to my face/head. Usually, it is a rather quiet event. ) The dog was still agitated, and I told her in a half-mumble to go to her crate. She didn’t. She kept barking as the cat hissed and jumped to the window sill. I then turned on my lamp that was almost knocked down in the process to see just what was going on.

“It is early morning, damnit! I want to get some sleeeeeeeepoooooooholyshit!”

My cat was not a cat. It was a large scared raccoon.

Soo-won and King Hiryuu theory

SPOILER WARNING!!!!!

So, I really don’t like making theories unless it’s obvious I’m right (and as far as I can tell, nothing about these two is obvious except their similar appearance and status as king), but here it goes.

Exhibit A:

Zeno, who we now know has deep emotional ties to King Hiryuu himself from personal experience, was apparently entranced for a moment when he met Soo-won.

Then again, Zeno has been around awhile and apparently visited the three other Dragons in their childhood, maybe he ran into Soo-won as a kid too and just had a moment of recognizing him.

When it comes right down to it, we simply do not know much about Soo-won. I am personally of the opinion that he’s a fine person, but aside from a few mentions about his own father’s apparently unjust death:

…we don’t know if maybe Soo-won had some profound experience as a kid, that only he knows about which gives him whatever drive he now has as king. I feel comfortable saying that he was the most mature of the thee musketeers (Yona was a ditz, obviously and Hak was intelligent but not motivated by large scale affairs) so I can see how he cares for them, admires them but still feels a little detached and misunderstood as a child.

My personal thoughts and theories:

--Soo-won has been known to make bold Heaven related statements.

“I will reform Kouka Kingdom in to the strong country it was like in the time of our ancestors. If anyone or anything gets in my way, even if it’s divine intervention, I will hold them down.”

“Gods of fantasy can not put the kingdom back aright.”

He could truly be ignorant of the Dragon’s real existence or some how be in defiance of them because he knows something no one else seems to. There could even be some other Being that isn’t a Dragon that is going to show up on the scene (isn’t that how these stories usually go; as you level up you find more and more people you’d never heard of pulling the strings?)

Maybe he is actually carrying out Hiryuu’s will to fix Kouka Kingdom on purpose because he admires the story. (it would explain why he holds himself in high regard as someone who is actually making physical change, rather than invisible gods, but is still technically doing what the mythological King Hiryuu wanted).

I mean, he could just be very passionate about the Kouka kingdom for many reasons…but I’m assuming there is a big plot twist coming. Hell, the mangaka   (Mizuho Kusanagi) may not even know where the story is going just yet. (it’s the creative process, you understand).

–There is the idea going around that perhaps Soo-won is the reincarnation of King Hiryuu and that Yona is somehow not.

I personally think Yona is really great and am very proud of her development and have no reason to believe the red hair and Dragon loyalty aren’t true indications of her being the reincarnation of Hiryuu.

– Ik-Soo’s prophecy:

“Darkness has fallen upon the land. The blood of the dragons will revive once again, and the ancient pact will be kept. When the four dragons are gathered, the sword and shield which will protect the king shall awaken, and the Red Dragon shall restore the dawn at last.”

Could it be that Yona is the sword, Zeno is the shield and Soo-won is the King? Zeno does say he’s the ‘odd pickings’ of the four Dragons, his immortality has to mean something.

(or Yona is the king and Soo-won is the sword…maybe Hak’s the freaking shield…or visa versa) It would sort of make sense…the two most important people in Yona’s life that aren’t the Dragons (or mother Yoon) would be those two: swordXshield. If they don’t know who is who yet, it would explain why Soo-won is currently occupying the throne, perhaps in Yona’s stead….

Is this scene somehow indicative of greater symbology and foreshadowing?

Yona did have that moment when she saw Soo-won on the battle field and was struck by his kingly goals. And she is apparently going to be an expert swordswoman eventually. Even if she never forgives Soo-won, she may help him for the good of Kouka as his ‘sword’. Even if Hak never forgives Soo-won, he follows Yona and ‘shields’ her–and by extension Soo-won himself. Or if Zeno is the shield he may just choose to stay with Soo-won. Either way the Red Dragon (not king, but ‘Red Dragon’) did technically unite and awaken everybody. Most notably after Soo-won made his first move when he killed Emperor Il.

Maybe Hiryuu didn’t want to be king so much as guardian. Maybe he new he was setting the stage for the true king. Maybe that is why discovering Zeno’s power freaked him out so much.

–Zeno also told Yona in the scene where he confesses his origin that she is Hiryuu but that she doesn’t have to live her current life the way King Hiryuu did.

–Perhaps it’s no coincidence that Soo-won and Yona are so closely related and grew up together. They could both be aspects of king Hiryuu.

It would be ‘selfcest’. (That’s comic relief guys)

–Let us not forget, Soo-won named the Manga:

–Could Yona and Soo-won actually be siblings? That is such a cliché plot twist it would actually catch me off guard. But it’s still interesting. And likely, among royals, I would guess. Soo-won doesn’t look like his father and we have no indication of what Yona or Soo-won’s mothers looked like. I do recall Emperor Il being weirdly fervent that Soo-won not become king when Yona wanted to marry him. Why did he have General Yu-Hon killed? Why did Il succeed to the throne as the youngest son?

–Apparently Emperor Il may not have been the one to ban the story of the Dragons…then who? Yu-hon? Their father?

–Kan Soo-Jin was technically stabbed by his own soldier and was thinking about King Hiryuu when he died because his men were denouncing his claim to be worthy of Hiryuu’s bloodline, causing him to have a flash back to happier story telling days with his two sons, but I think it’s worth pointing out that he died on the battle field with Soo-won watching him after trying to execute an unsuccessful coup d’état to dethrone him. Perhaps his last thoughts had a grander connection to Soo-won’s worthiness for the throne.

-when, why and how did Kye Sook and Soo-won become partners in kingdom controlling?
