this is super helpful!! I've been trying to figure out how to stay on top of the news without getting facebook or twitter.
If you live in the US and want a way to follow good non-right wing news for free, consider:
Subscribing to PBS News on YouTube (they have a news hour every night/half hour on weekends, broken up into smaller consumable segments. Sometimes they live stream national events like the inauguration. You don't have to watch it all, but pick and choose what to watch & when. Like, say, only watching the half hour weekend segments).
Subscribing to NPR News on whatever podcast app you have (they do 5-minute news updates throughout the day; you usually only need to listen to it 1x/day to get highlights).
Subscribe to nonprofit investigative online news source ProPublica; you can sign up for either daily, weekly, or top news stories sent to your email. You can also follow them on sm.
Okay this one isn't free, but if you have any extra money, don't underestimate how important or endangered local newspapers are. Subscribe if you can. Some papers will also send you short summaries if you're a subscriber, and you can also follow local papers on social media.
Remember that just generally getting deluged with news on social media is not good for your mental health, and is much more susceptible to misinformation or propaganda. Getting news online works best when it's supplemental to verified news sources; usually as grassroots, on-the-ground info from people you know and trust who are living out a certain experience.
You can keep a particular online space "safe" from politics without hurting anything, provided you make routine space for good, responsible news in your schedule.
AND that you make sure to follow a diverse group of people and support their inclusion in that space, even if you're online for a niche interest (in almost any online hobby, there are lots of people who are not at all the same class, race, ethnicity, gender identity, from the same place, etc, etc). Honor, protect, and value a wide variety of voices even in your online hobbyist spaces, while also making regular time for real news? You'll find yourself with a decent snapshot of information from both the top down and the bottom up about how the world works and is impacting a wide variety of people.
Without feeling like you have to absorb/respond to everything happening every single moment of every day. For the next 4 years

beautiful sea creatures, i love you
it really hurts me to see so many gazans asking us for help, though that's through no fault of their own. they've been forced to use a social media site that they're probably not familiar with (because tumblr has kind of faded out of popular consciousness), to interact with us in a second language, to distinguish themselves from the scammers who are taking advantage of genocide, and to ask strangers for help. i don't think there are any cultures where it's easy to ask for help like this, but i'm intimately familiar with how humiliating it can be in arab culture. please be kind, gracious and helpful to the gazans in your inbox. this is a desperate time for them, and in addition to the physical danger inflicted by "israel", the prices of basic resources in gaza are extremely high due to scarcity, and those that manage to escape to egypt are financially exploited by landlords there and have an extremely difficult time finding work due to their unofficial status as refugees. these families will continue to need our help and i hope we can all continue to provide it to the best of our ability.
hey for those looking to protest, look into voices ignited on bluesky. theyre organizing protests across the country and currently have ones scheduled in Seattle and Phoenix on the 29th, they're working on getting permissions for Pittsburgh as well.
If you plan to go, remember to wear a mask and cover all identifying features. Tattoos, dyed hair, don't wear identifiable clothing. Turn your phones off completely and make your lockscreen emergency contacts just in case. Bring a medkit if you have one and be sure it contains saline for any kind of tear gas. These protests are meant to be peaceful, but we all know how that usually goes.
If anyone attempts to get you to use violence, that is a fed. Do not listen to them.
Be safe, I love you, the only way out is through
Love your art so much. Will you show us cool nature pics from your country? I'm literally so stoned I forgot where you live sorry.
Sure anon, why not. I'm not a photographer so the quality of these is kind of slushy at best. I like nature and wander around a little bit, but I rarely hike properly, so I don't go to that many scenic places. These are mostly from regular walks. Long post warning.
Summers are short but very green, and since we're at the arctic circle we get sunlight around the clock. Some of these were taken at midnight or early morning small hours. Most of Finland is very sparsely populated and covered in boreal forests.
Finland is a very watery country, lots of lakes in particular.
Sometimes you get intense sunsets
And winters are very cold, snowy and last about six months. In summer we have midnight sun and in winter there's the polar night to counter it. Around late December sun only rises for about two hours per day where I live so it's very dark for many, many weeks on end (which is wonderful if you get seasonal depression like I do). But sometimes the weather and lighting are just right and you get this ethereal pastel effect that I love.
hey! i recently had top surgery (woohoo!), and i thought I'd write down what the whole process was like for me, from start to finish (aka 6 weeks later). i hope this helps anybody looking into top surgery or just looking for someone else's experience!
quick info:
i got ftm top surgery as a transmasc person on October 23rd, 2024. i got the double incision type, without nipple grafts, plus liposuction. my surgeon was Dr. Rukmini Rednam in Houston, Texas, USA.

this link is to a Dropbox PDF. if for whatever reason you can't access it, I'll reblog this post soon with just the plain text from the file! there are no photos or anything in this file, and no graphic descriptions, just quick summaries and a general timeline.
THIS IS SO SICK!! it turned out so awesome! I'm so flattered that you were inspired by my stuff, dude

Doctor Who is like. The Show ever, i definitely need to make a patch for it now
also i keep seeing black and red patches and i think I'm gonna give my newest denim jacket that color scheme
I got INSANELY inspired by @dannychai1617 's blue jay patch they made for their patch jacket and so tried my hand at making a raven for my own after my rewatch of Doctor Who Season 9 (iykyk). I made this with recycled fabric and thrifted embroidery floss and it was a lot of fun!
[progress under the cut]
i haven't done much digital art lately (even though it's my favorite medium!!) so here's a 3 hour doodle i drew on my phone
when I'm using my drawing tablet i use krita, but on my phone i use ibispaint. i recently learned there's a desktop version of ibispaint, so that's cool! i drew this much in the middle of the night and kept falling asleep mid drawing:
then this morning i went back and adjusted a few things and added the speech bubbles
a masked creature i drew with an ink pen for my art class in about 3 days of on and off drawing
