{Titus}
[The streets of Titus, while still in significant disrepair, were quite busy. There were plenty of people bustling about, carrying on their daily lives in the big city.]
[Cardinal sauntered through the crowds, grateful for the cover. He was awfully close to Sanda Enterprises now, and he could not afford to catch their attention.]
<DLN-000 to CSU-001>: >Look at all these people, Jazz.
<DLN-000 to CSU-001>: >They’ve already started working on some basic repairs.
[No one really seemed to pay any attention to him as he made his way downtown. He’d only been there once before, but it was easy to rely on the memory. It’s not as if he could really miss where he was going, anyway.]
<DLN-000 to CSU-001>: >No one seems to be trying to kill each other, or destroying robots out of hysterics and fear….
[He had halfway expected that it would be like the streets of Upper Monstropolis. He’d been shocked when he arrived in the city, only to find it operational, if not fully functioning.]
<DLN-000 to CSU-001>: > I guess Beck must have cleaned up the city, and calmed people down. These people are pretty safe now, and able to use their technology….
<DLN-000 to CSU-001>: >I’m glad.
Jazz: Ree-ow.
[He paid no heed to the merchants along the row. He utterly ignored the gossip flying through the air around him, even if his analysis filter kept picking up keywords relating to the Mighty Numbers. It was highly unlikely that they knew anything useful, or else it would have made the news. Which it hadn’t, of course; he’d spent that morning at the library, leafing through various newspapers.]
<DLN-000 to CSU-001>: >Of course, I don’t think we’ll find him there. If he were in Titus, Beck would have figured it out by now. He’s definitely not home. We’re just looking for leads, here.
[His cat purred, rubbing her face against him. He grinned a little, looking up into the sky.]
<DLN-000 to CSU-001>: >Wish we could fly there. But now that Avi’s better… I’m sure he has sky cams all throughout the city. Really… it’s only a matter of time before someone catches on after analyzing video feeds.
<DLN-000 to CSU-001>: >Oh well. I’ll burn that bridge when I get there.
[If it weren’t for the fact that he was on a grave mission in the middle of an ongoing apocalypse, he would have really enjoyed the nice day. It was sunny out, with the sea breeze coming off the harbor. Not nearly as sweltering as it had been in Kansas City the day before.
As the buildings gave way to a massive open area near the arena’s parking lot, he was overcome by a sudden weight of wistfulness.]
Cardinal: (I remember the first time I saw the arena, when Shade showed me around.)
-=-=-=-=-=-=-
{April 2nd, Earlier that Year…}
[MIGHTY NUMBERS LOCKER ROOM]
[The locker room...wasn't exactly a locker room. More like a quick maintenance area with spaces accommodated for each of the Mighty Numbers, like a pit stop for cars. There WAS a storage area, though, each marked with a symbol for each Mighty Number.]
Shade: Here we are.
Cardinal: …
Cardinal: Dude.
Cardinal: This is RAD.
[Aw, lookit him geeking out a bit over it, going from station to station.]
Shade: B]
Beck: We mostly come here for halftime or after a match, to refuel, reload and relax, and the stations make small repairs if we need them.
Cardinal: -Broadcasting abstract DAYDREAMS-
Cardinal: -GLORYYYYYYY-
Shade: Aw, there he goes. He's got arena fever, heh.
Cardinal: -Looks over with a grin-
-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Cardinal: (Oh, Shade…. What I wouldn’t give right now to be back to those halcyon days. I hope your locker has some answers, though you’ll have to forgive me for breaking it open…)
[As he drew closer, however, he was surprised to see massive blockades.]
Cardinal: Oh? Now what’s all this?
[He hastened over to inquire into the matter, foregoing politeness for the sake of getting right to the point in a way that demanded an answer.]
Cardinal: You there. What’s the meaning of all this?
???: I’m sorry, sir, but the Colosseum is not currently open to visitors.
Cardinal: Why?
???: It’s not safe.
Cardinal: Again, why? Didn’t Beck heal everybody?
???: -Clearly getting tired of explaining this for the tenth time this hour- : | The building is structurally unsound. There was a lot of damage caused when the virus went live and sent every single of the powerhouse fighters into a rampage.
Cardinal: —…? (That… that day?)
???: -Now leave, please-
[Cardinal was compliant and willingly turned aside, but he didn’t go very far before he put a hand to his head, horribly confused.]
Cardinal: (I remember now…)
Cardinal: (I was supposed to go with them that day…)
Cardinal: (I went WITH them to the match…)
[He struggled in vain to find the cross-references. Every search he could think of turned up empty.]
>NO RESULTS FOUND.
Cardinal: (All I remember was going to bed that night, and then…?)
>NO RESULTS FOUND.
Cardinal: -Frowns- (Why can’t I remember the match? How did I even end up in Kansas City?)
>NO RESULTS FOUND.
[Puzzled and rather dismayed, he ran through all the data from that day to begin with. Much to his regret, the only entry prior to his memories in Kansas City was an error log report, stating he had suffered a Stop error and rebooted under a Code Red contingency.]
Cardinal: (What on earth could have made me black out like that? I wasn’t injured…)
Cardinal: (I don’t understand. I don’t understand it at all…)
[For a brief moment, he considered teleporting into the locker room anyway. He honestly didn’t care what the building security would think of it.
…But then he remembered that it was more than just a mere room. It was the personal space of the entire family—including Avi.]
Cardinal: (Augh…! He’s bound to have a camera or two in there! If not for security reasons, then for his own PR or personal amusement purposes…)
Cardinal: (This plan was flawed from the start. Stupid…)
[He vented a sigh and made his way back to the downtown district.]
Cardinal: (Shade said there was a sushi place around here, and we meant to go to it…)
[He knew that at this point, he was driven as much by nostalgia as by desperation. Walking the streets they had walked, going to the places they’d been to.
But it was all he had to go on. He had nothing, and… he was alone.]
Cardinal: (There’s got to be someone that has some sort of idea, some sort of clue…)
[…But, to his great disappointment, when he finally arrived at the sushi shop based on context and a lot of wandering…
…He found that it was closed, and locked up tight.]
Cardinal: -In a low growl- Well glitch. Isn’t that just swell.
[He sighed and leaned up against the boarded windows, crossing his arms.]
Cardinal: -Talking aloud now, since he didn’t sense anyone nearby to hear him- Where are you now, Shade? What are you after?
Cardinal: (I don’t know any other places. I can’t just wander around.)
[He knew he should get a move on and head out of the alley, but he just didn’t know where to go or what to do. He had no idea what sort of other places Shade might have frequented, people he would have talked to.
He’d never had the chance to find that out.]
Cardinal: (This isn’t fair, Shade.) You were supposed to show me around…
[He stuck his hands in his pockets and started to move down the streets. There was still someplace familiar he felt driven to go, even if he was only paying half-attention.]
[He found it more relaxing to move about at night, when people were paying even less attention to him. It was mercifully easy to use a fire escape to climb up to the rooftops and overlook the cityscape.]
Cardinal: …
[He found himself staring at a familiar building: the CherryDynamics headquarters.]
Cardinal: … -Somewhat broken smile- (Oh, right…. This is where we were that glorious night…)
Cardinal: (It was…)
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
{April 16th, Earlier That Year…}
[The whole of CherryDyn looks to be blaring red in alarms in the distance, and some searchlights can be seen from the top of the building. The trio responsible is howling with hysterical laughter, chattering to themselves….]
Shade: They are flippin' out, God.-- -LAUGHS-
Cardinal: -Laughing like he’s a kid again-
Rockwell: Holy [frag]— -aaaand he's gone, laughing like mad-
Cardinal: DAMMIT I knew we shoulda brought popcorn!
Shade: THEY FOUND THE CRACKER.
[Sure enough, the spotlights settle on their own logo.]
Shade: -nOPE HE IS GONE HE IS FALLING ON HIS BACKSIDE IN LAUGHTER-
Cardinal: -HELP MY FANS, CAN’T BREEEEEEATHE FROM LAUGHING-
Rockwell: OH MY GODDDD -He can't breathe IT'S TOO MUCH-
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Cardinal: (That was…)
[He was overcome by a great sense of loss and longing, his sorrow drowning out the joy of that day to where he could no longer even feel it.]
Cardinal: (That was the happiest night of my entire, long, looooooong, long life…)
[He shook his head sadly.]
Cardinal: (What HAPPENED that day, Shade? Why did I leave you? How could I just… run AWAY…?)
[He gave a small whine.]
Cardinal: (I left you—all of you, the whole crowd—simply to turn up somewhere I associate to be safe…)
Cardinal: (Did I…)
Cardinal: (Did I end up being a giant coward…?)
[He couldn’t bear to dwell on the thought. There HAD to be some other reason, there just had to….
He had no idea what it was, but there just had to be…
…Right…?]
Cardinal: -Ruefully, narrowing his eyes at the logo of the building- (I saw the headlines. I read the newspapers today…)
[His eyes flickered a brighter and deeper green in intense emotion, his heart turning from disappointed and bewildered guilt into a slowly growing into anger.]
Cardinal: (How dare he try to glorify himself at everyone’s expense….)
Cardinal: -Growls-
Cardinal: (He’s OBVIOUSLY hiding something…)
[His mind was taken back to that day, that day when he had warned them about this.]
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
{March 15th, Earlier That Year…}
Cardinal: He’s more slippery than I thought.
Cardinal: …I don’t trust him one bit.
Cardinal: He’s too… eager to make a big deal out of it. That’s not very good damage control, not good crowd control.
Cardinal: It’s a publicity stunt. And I don’t like it.
Beck: Publicity stunt...
White: It is concerning, to be sure...
Cardinal: Why exactly is he so eager to deflect the attention[…]? What is it that he doesn’t want us to see about his company? Because you can bet your gears that investigations like this always get a little too deep for comfort for those who like to deal under the table.
Cardinal: I highly doubt he was /involved/… in -this-. But he may be trying to deflect attention as fast and as far as possible so that something ELSE isn’t found. The bigger the company, the higher the chances of the darker side of business being involved.
White: Graham, dealing in shady business...if word got out about that, he'd be ruined.
Cardinal: Right. Even the question is pretty damaging.
Cardinal: But to deflect the whole thing right back to you, the way he said it—that was on purpose. He should have caught that serve, not sent the ping-pong back.
Cardinal: We’re being played. -Grumpy data flow-
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Cardinal: -Growls louder, his eyes turning a violent red- (First you go to the trouble of setting up a Combat team just to unseat the Mighty Numbers, humiliate them and cast doubt and disquiet…)
Cardinal: (And then your team goes WILD, nearly killing people…)
Cardinal: (I swear, if I find that YOU were behind all of this, I will find a way to DESTROY you…!)
[He gave a huff, making his way down to the streets below. He needed time to think.
He ended up making his way over to a bar, where he ordered coffee.]
Cardinal: -Leans back against the wall, scratching Jazz behind the ears with his free hand- (Well… if THIS isn’t fine and dandy….) -Siiiiiip-
Cardinal: (I have no more leads. What should I do?)
Jazz: -Purrs, flicking her tail-
Cardinal: (I told him that if anything ever happened to me, that he should go to the Mad Hatters. They’ve known me for decades, and that’s where I used to live. I still sort of have a job there, for that matter…)
Cardinal: (They would know where to find me. Some might even be able to help him, too…)
[He idly started broadcasting his signature tune very, very quietly as he stared off into the distance, “watching” the TV with a very bored expression.]
Cardinal: (And I knew that I wanted to get something similar from him, in case he ever got in trouble. Not like I expected this, though…) -Eyes flicker brighter for a moment- (When he talked about his coworkers, I knew that they would be the ones to go to if I needed information…. But I respected and trusted him too much to press the matter….) -Narrows his eyes in a scowl- (Paying the price for that weakness…)
[He sighed, putting the empty mug down rather heavily and putting a hand to his face.]
Cardinal: (Shade, what am I supposed to do? There are only two possible sources of information at this point: your family, and your coworkers.)
Cardinal: (I don’t KNOW where that “office” is, nor who the other assassins are! You mentioned a “Diamond” at one point when you were talking to Bladeblaster—and man, my first idea would have been to beat the information out of the guy, but he’s already dead.)
Cardinal: (Will I really be reduced to—)
Jazz: Reeerr!
Cardinal: —?
[He looked up to see something very… interesting on the screen.]
[As the headline report went on, he couldn’t help but smile.]
Cardinal: Wow. (I’m impressed.)
[He felt a sense of pride for the CDN. He hadn’t had the chance to get to know the guy very well yet, but he always felt that he was a good man. He was glad to see that Jack was still very much alive and well—though he was rather puzzled for want of context.]
Cardinal: (I thought you were still holed up in England? How and why did you turn up in America? Must have been an awfully good reason, given that you know more than others are willing to let pass…. Not to mention, you know. The whole “apocalypse” thing.) You’re a brave man…
Cardinal: (Well, wherever you are, I hope you’re sa—)
Cardinal: —!!!
[He just stared in utter surprise when the news story ended and moved on to the next headline.]
Cardinal: (What the—)
“…similar such heroics can be found in various places throughout the country. One of the most surprising stories comes right from the heart of Kansas City, where a mysterious Xelbot is reported to have almost single-handedly help coordinate and carry out a massive evacuation effort.”
[The screen jumped to a sketch of Cardinal in his Combat form, with Jazz at his side. An audio clip from an interview played.]
“ ‘He came out of nowhere, so unexpectedly—at first we thought that he was infected, and retaliated. But he never seemed to hold that against us… he was always just so focused on helping everyone get out…’ ”
Cardinal: -So many mixed feelings right now- (AAAAAAAAVS—! Is this— is this YOUR doing?)
“Witnesses across the metro gave countless reports of his heroic efforts at all of the city’s major tourist attractions, including Arrowhead Stadium. City officials are now on the lookout for this caretaker, who is reported to have vanished from the hospital where he was recovering after a major fight.”
Cardinal: -Oh, great— -
[He tried very hard to play it off casually, quickly tightening the amount of data he gave off so that it no longer reflected his emotion.
He had hoped that staying in his Civilian form would allow him to blend in with the crowd, prevent him from being spotted by the Mighty Numbers. Nobody else knew who he was, and they didn’t have reason to care.
He had not considered the idea that he would make the local news, let alone the national news.]
Cardinal: ([Gliiiiiiiiiitch]… this…)
[Under any normal circumstance, he would feel very touched by someone giving him such recognition. Even now, he felt extremely moved with gratitude, feeling both validated and honored.]
Cardinal: -Casually gets up from the table, rifling through his coat for cash to leave as a tip-
[…But in this instance, he also felt dismayed and concerned. It wouldn’t be long before some eagle-eyed observer noticed how similar Jazz’s Civ form was to her Combat form, and how he wore the same glasses and scarf regardless of form… not to mention his somewhat distinctive earcaps, which held the standard Robot Master (and NOT the standard Xelbot) design.]
Cardinal: (Was this a ploy to get some tips to a hotline? Really, Avi? Oh geez….)
[He made something less than a hasty exit, even though he wanted to bolt. He had to resist the urge to run, to take to the rooftops for safety. In the end, he took hasty refuge inside of a chapel, hiding in a dimly lit nook well out of sight.]
Cardinal: (Maybe if I’m lucky, this will be over by morning…)

Five years ago, on August 7th, 2012, I made this blog under the url not-a-nobody. My preference was not available for another year, and I have been under that changed url ever since. Since then I have grown and changed, both as a person and a writer.
Naminé as a character is truly very important to me. No other character is more beloved. I first saw her in 2006 and I was immediately drawn to her. It is because of this girl with an angelic appearance that I got interested in Kingdom Hearts… without her I wouldn’t be here, or have met any of you. Seeing as how I’ve met my best friends on this blog, that’s really saying something. To me, Naminé represents hidden strength and the truth. She could’ve easily lied or not said anything to Roxas; she could’ve easily used him and Sora for her own gain; instead she not only spoke the truth, she fixed her mistakes. Naminé also defied DiZ and Riku to do what she felt was right, and even more awe-inspiring, she stood up to Larxene and Marluxia upon realizing her mistakes. It is never easy to stand up to your abusers and captors. For someone so small, Naminé has left an indelible mark on my life.
I’ve been in these groups: Kingdom Hearts Ultimate RP (KHURP for short), Pyreflights, Aeon Soul, Somnium Finite, and Crowned Kingdom. Each taught me something and introduced me to new friends. I’m happy to say that I’m still friends with people from each group!
Five years is a big milestone for me. At this moment I have 630+ followers, and I’m happy to have all of you on board! I never dreamed I would last this long; I have no idea what I was thinking back in that August before my freshman year of college, but it certainly wasn’t this.
I’ve been through a lot on this blog: group changes, friends and partners leaving and changing, being bullied (though thankfully that has long since passed), learning time management, and so much more.
I wouldn’t be here with you all. Obviously I could not possibly name everyone, past and present, but I thought I should show at least some of you my thanks. This is not a follow forever or a bias list; instead this is a thank-you post. Some people might get repeated because I couldn’t just leave them under one category. Oh, and alphabetical order because I like to have everything orderly.

“Come ON, Beck! Hurry up, we’re gonna be late!”
It is the present year.
“C-Coming, Cryo!”
Breakthroughs in robotic technology have ushered in a new era of peace and prosperity. Violence is confined to the Battle Colosseum, where robot combatants face off in spectacular duels.
“We’ve spent enough time walking down memory lane in the trophy room. We have to get to the arena before they call us out for our return debut match.”
“WE KNOW, Pyro. Jeezzz, calm down.”
“I believe he is only excited to be back in familiar stomping grounds. Isn’t that right, Bat?”
“TOO RIGHT, Brand!”
“MAN, I am so stoked for this! Hey, I hope they get my good side, ya know? Course, I look good in ALL angles.”
“…Avi not focused.”
“Mic is right. It’s time to get out there. Everyone! PLACES!”
“YES SIR NO.1!”
Today, the colosseum walls once again echo with the shouts and cheers of excited fans…
…when suddenly…
….
[....]
[XELFILTER.EXE PROGAM CYCLE COMPLETE. ALL MALWARE HAS BEEN FILTERED AND NEUTRALIZED FROM ALL SYSTEMS.]
[REBOOTING...]
[MN.9 IS NOW ONLINE]
Beck: ....Uuugh...
Beck: What...what happened...
[......]
[At first...nothing.]
[Then....]
"PYRO! BRAND! SHADE! GUYS! S T O P!!"
Beck: ......!!!!!
[MN.9 to MN.1-8] //: GUYS! GUYS!
[MN.9 HAS BEEN BLOCKED BY MN.1-8.]
[MN.9] //: ...??!?!
Beck: What...?!
Beck: Why would... They...
[...And that is when he noticed where he was. No longer was he within the Colosseum walls, he was now on some rooftop by a NBCA advertisement. It looked like he was simply DROPPED here, but the means of how and why were far from his mind.]
[At the sounds of the explosions, Mighty No. 9 ran across the rooftop ...]
Beck: !!!
Beck: N...No...!
[Screams. Fire.]
Beck: What....
[The whole of the city in absolute chaos, citizens screaming in terror, fleeing from literal hordes of rampaging robots, leaving nothing but destruction in their wake.]
Beck: What is...happening...?!
Beck: .....!!!
Beck: DAD!
[His creator. His father. Doctor William Apollo White.]
[He was somewhere in this madness...]
[Without another thought, Beck jumped down from the rooftop. He had to find him. He had to know if...!]
Beck: PROFESSOR! DAD! WHERE ARE YOU?!
Beck: DAAAAD!!
[......]
[..........]
[..............]
[...!! There! In the distance--! That puff of hair that could only be--!]
Beck: Dad!
White: Beck!
[The sheer relief couldn't be plainer on their faces, as Beck ran up to his father, who seemed to have seen better days--his lab coat was torn here and there, and his face was covered in black soot.]
White: Ah, Beck--thank God--and functioning normally, it would appear!
Beck: Yeah...yeah, I'm fine, Dad. I'm fine...
Beck: I am so glad you're OK—
[Beck clutched his leg as hard as he could, and White bent down to give his youngest perhaps the hardest hug he could muster.]
White: ...God...what on earth has happened...? It's...chaos, everywhere...!
Beck: I...I dunno...I dunno...Dad...
[Tears filled his emerald green eyes.]
Beck: I...I can't contact the others...Pyro, Cryo, Dyna...they...blocked me...!
White: What?!
White: Why on...
White: . . .
White: oh God—nononoNO—
[He fumbled with his bag, which held his laptop. He opened it as quickly as he could and--]
[...His suspicions were confirmed.]
[The status of all Mighty Numbers...]
[To say he was both horrified and shocked was an understatement.]
[His sons...his daughters...]
Beck: .....!!!
[Several airborne delivery bots had spotted them--and their load was less than helpful. They were bombs.]
[Beck pushes his father out of the way, with a strength he never knew he had in this default form...]
White: ooF--
[The blast knocked both father and son back some ways, but Beck's quick actions had saved them both from sustaining serious damage.]
[Thankfully, the trio of delivery bots no more cargo to dispel, and flew back the way they came--probably to get more of their ammo.]
Beck: Dad--Dad, are you OK?!
White: Ngh...
White: Y-Yes...mostly...
[Beck looked forward--this street...this was familiar...]
[...! Wait! He knew where he was! Just a few blocks from here was home!]
Beck: Dad--Dad, it's not safe--
White: ...
[After catching his breath, he stood--brushed himself off, and looked to the distance along with Nine. There, on end of this long street...]
[Sands Enterprises.]
White: ........
White: .......
Beck: Dad...?
[His expression hardened.]
[....His sons, his daughters...]
[What was happening to all the robots...]
[...He couldn't do anything from here.]
White: We won't figure out anything from here, Beck.
White: We must make for the laboratory--and quickly!
Beck: ...!
[But between them and home...a war zone.]
White: ........
Beck: ....
White: Beck...
White: I can't get through this by myself.
White: You MUST forge on ahead and clear a secure path.
Beck: --!? Wha--
White: Don't worry--I'll follow, and monitor your process. We only need to make it to the end of this street!
White: Do you think you can do that?
Beck: ......
[...He's walked down this street countless times--he's just never had to do it amidst gunfire.]
[But Dad...]
[His family...Dr. Sanda...Call...!]
[MN.9 HAS ENTERED COMBAT MODE.]
Beck: Yes sir!
[...Seeing that smile on his face, and the will that clearly shined beneath those eyes...]
White: Alright...
[...There was hope.]
[They could not lose that--not now!]
White: Let's move!
[Getting through the overturned vehicles and debris was easy enough, and provided good cover for Will.]
[...But it wasn't long before...]
Beck: ....!!
[A flash of purple, and a standard CherryDyn Security Model robot materialized in his path, waving it's arms around wildly, it's weapon primed and ready to fire.]
[White's voice filled his comm link--as long as they were near each other, they could speak above the chaotic noises that filled the blue sky.]
White: A security bot...and it's out of control like all the others...
[The CherryDyn bot, however, didn't notice Beck at all--rather, it moved on ahead...]
Beck: ....!!
Beck: Professor! Look!
White: !
[There, on a large public screen that overlooked the street...]
[Gregory Graham.]
<DLN-008 to MNN-ALL>: > -PING!-
[…!
Faint!
But there!
That was Toby’s signal, no doubt about it!]
Beck: !!!!
Beck: Toby!
White: Tobias?!
Beck: I felt his signal!
Beck: It's...so faint but...!
[The signal is fluctuating and faltering, as if something’s interfering with it.]
[KKKST!]
Beck and White: WHAT?!
[There are some faint data streams that suggest anger—from DWNs—but it is still too faint…
Barely noticeable, given the matter at hand.]
Graham: Ahem! Hello?...eh, hello...? Is this thing on?!
[...The CEO seemed...panicked...]
Graham: Ah! Ahem--...My fellow Americans...in this time of crisis, we at CherryDyn would just like to express....
Graham: That this isn't our fault!
White: ....!!
Graham: It's that Dr. Blackwell--HE'S the one that's behind all this! BLAME HIM!
Beck: What the--is he SERIOUS?!
[…Oddly…
…nothing, from their otherworldly friends.
Very odd, considering the LAST time that there had been a panic, and how loudly they had cried out in dismay.
But it seemed Graham wasn’t done yet…]
[Graham then composes himself...]
Graham: Ahem--we at CherryDyn are doing ALL we can to help fix the situation...BUT IT'S BLACKWELL'S FAU--
[KKKKKKSSST!]
"Heeeelllloooo! Is this thing on?"
Beck: ...Avi?
[PING!]
<DLN-008>: >Avi! Avi, no! What are you doing?
[He doesn't answer. Instead, he continues to give his twisted 'news report'.]
Avi: “Ahem! And now, let's go live to our eye in the sky, Avi, for today's Avi News traffic report!~”
[And in a completely not so different voice--]
Avi: "Thanks, Avi! As you can see, we've got a few accidents eastbound on, well--"
Avi: "EVERYWHERE! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!~"
<DLN-008>: > DON’T PRETEND YOU CAN’T HEAR ME— now is not the time for games, Aviator!
Avi: "Yup, we've got chaos here, chaos there on this BEEEEEAUTIFUL June 21, 20XX! Here on Avi News today, we've got exclusive coverage on today's top story!~
Avi: THE END OF THE WORLD, BABY!~
White: MIGHTY NO. 6! STOP THIS IMMEDIATELY!
Beck: A…Avi…
Avi: "Short answer? NO!~ BWAHAHAHA!~"
[.......]
[MN.6] //: Well, would you look at that! I got a caller!~
[The screen cuts out to another camera while Avi switched his attention to Toby, leaving Beck and White to gaze in horror at the bird's eye view of their city...]
White: We're almost there...!
[Traversing the war-torn street, Beck and White are just one more block away from the entrance...]
White: ....!
Beck: ...? What is it, Dad?
White: Dr. Sanda's calling...
[DR.WHITE] //: Sanda? What's the matter--
[DR.SANDA] //: WHAT'S THE MATTER?!
[DR.SANDA] //: WHAT THE BLEEDING HECK DO YOU THINK IS THE MATTER?! ARE YOU OK, WILL?!
[DR.WHITE] //: ...Oh, fine. More or less.
[DR.SANDA] //: .....
[DR.WHITE] //: And yourself?
[…Yep.
He was his usual self, alright.]
[Dr. Sanda, however…]
[DR.SANDA] //: Good Lord do you EVER stop being tactless--
[...LOUD clanking noises in the background of his feed.]
[DR.SANDA] //: ohmyGod
[DR.SANDA] //: I'm less than fine--MUCH LESS! These robots gone wild are TEARING THE PLACE APART!
[DR.WHITE] //: What...in the building too?!
[DR.SANDA] //: I've sealed myself in the lab--but who knows HOW long before they break through?!
[DR.WHITE] //: Ah, I see. Understood. We're already on our way!
[DR.SANDA] //: ...We?
[MN.9] //: -PING!- Dr. Sanda...!
[DR.SANDA] //: ...!! Beck? BECK? IS THAT REALLY YOU?!
[MN.9] //: Yeah--it's me! I'm OK, I'm not crazy!
[DR.SANDA] //: THANK THE LORD--
[BANG!]
[DR.SANDA] //: -sCREECH--
[DR.WHITE] //: Just try to hold them off for as long as you can! We're coming!
[Soon enough, after what seemed like hours had passed instead of minutes...]
[...Sanda Enterprises.]
[The front door was completely blown open.]
White: Oh, no...
Beck: I...I don't see Call anywhere...
White: ......
White: Beck. We have no time to waste...calculate the fastest possible route to the lab!
Beck: Yes sir!
Beck: ......
Beck: This way!
[BWAN BWAN BWAN BWAN--]
Beck: nEVER MIND THIS WAY--
[The elevator down to the lab was out--they had to take the other way down.]
White: --!!!
[...Sanda Models.]
[Heading this way...]
White: BECK!!
Beck: !!
[Trash bots--designed to recycle waste and paper--harmless enough, but something had caused them to open and shut their lids with the force of a vice, looking for anything to chomp on.]
Beck: Uhoh--
[They were heading this way--but oddly enough--their target...wasn't Beck...]
White: --!!
White: They're locked onto me--!
Beck: NO!
Trash Bots: -GLITCHED BEEPING-
[.......]
[ANALYZING.]
[EMOTION MATRIX RUNNING...]
[THREAT CONFIRMED.]
[ACTIVATING WEAPON SYSTEMS.]
Beck: STAY AWAY FROM HIM!
[WEAPON SYSTEMS: ONLINE.]
-*-*-*-*-
Felix: Let me tell you something, Master Beck. It is your heart and your build, your purpose, to help others. That is where your greatest power, I think, will always lie.
Beck: ..........
Beck: (Well, that's not...I mean, I was just built to fight....)
Felix: When you truly believe in your cause, the strength comes to you.
Felix: I can tell you THAT from experience.
Beck: .....R-Really....?
Felix: Of course.
Felix: And after all.
Felix: You /are/ MIGHTY.
-*-*-*-*-
[XEL ABSORPTION SYSTEMS....
ONLINE. ]
[BLAM BLAM BLAM!]
[In an instant, Beck's arm had transformed into his default demolecularizing arm cannon--capable of breaking apart substances right down to the molecular level within a few shots.]
[The Trash Bots were nailed right in the face, and soon they were...glowing. Their Xels were being broken apart, floating around them...]
[ZOOOOM!]
[ACXELARATE DASH: ONLINE. ]
[A white-blue glow had enveloped Beck as he dashed forward, the Xels of the weakened robots being absorbed into his own body, seamlessly clicking into place.]
[Shocked from the sudden Xel loss...the Trash Bots shut down.]
[ABSORPTION BOOST: ONLINE. ]
Beck: --!!
[A soft red glow shined around him, energy SURGING through him in a way that he's NEVER felt before...]
Beck: Ah--
[It all seemed to pool into his arm cannon.]
Beck: .....
Beck: WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED.
Beck: -pANIC-
Beck: W HAT WAS THAT?!
White: .......
White: Beck...did...
White: Did you just...absorb the Xels of a weakened robot and--my goodness --assimilate them?!
Beck: I DON'T KNOW--YOU TELL ME!
White: Alright--alright--just CALM down, Beck--breathe, breathe...
Beck: .......
White: Beck--I DESIGNED you with this capability.
Beck: ....!! W-Wait--
Beck: ...So--THIS is my...my power? My OTHER power?
White: Yes, Beck. I designed you with THREE central powers: Xel Manipulation, Xel Transformation...
White: ...And Xel Assimilation.
White: ....But...
White: This is the first time I've seen it...active...I hadn't thought it functional yet...
White: (...So why now...?)
White: .....!
White: (Of course...)
White: (Seeing me like this--in danger. Amidst madness and chaos...)
White: (His emotional matrix must have activated his latent abilities...)
White: (In an effort to protect me.)
Beck: .......
Beck: Whoooooa...
White: ....!
Beck: .....
[The glow subsided. Along with the surge of power.]
Beck: --? Uh...what happened?
White: ---Ngh! I'd love to explain but we have more robots incoming--!
Beck: --!!
[Within moments, as they headed deeper into the building, more and more robots appeared.]
[The security system had also gone haywire, and the very same measures used to protect them was now being used against them.]
White: Almost there, almost there...hold on, Soi...!
Beck: OwowowowlASERSHURTOW--
White: ...Right--the Lab is just ahead...
[DR.WHITE] //: Sanda?
[.....]
[DR.WHITE] //: Sanda, are you still there?
[.......]
[DR.WHITE] //: .......
[DR WHITE] //: Have the robots torn you to pieces...?
[MN.9] //: DAD--
[DR.SANDA] //: Criminny! Tactful as ALWAYS, Will... -_____-;;;
[DR.SANDA]//: I'm FINE, but for PETE'S SAKE, HURRY--!
[DR.WHITE] //: Don't worry, we just need to go through the--
[There was a LOUD scream across the feeds.]
[No—two voices, both screaming in utter agony!]
[B A N G.]
Beck: ?!?
Beck: What was THAT...?!
[The door opened...]
[WWRRRRRRRRRRRRRR--]
White: --?!
[Literally CRASHING through the side wall was a huge, round robot nearly seven times Beck's size, crushing anything underneath it's round steel flattener...]
White: A CherryDyn demolition unit?! How on EARTH did it manage to get DOWN here?!
Beck: Oh C RUD--
[The destructive CDN CHARGED right into Beck's path--he dove out of the way in time, however, but the shock of the impact with the other wall forced the door to close, leaving Will on the other side.]
Beck: DAD!
[DR.WHITE] //: I'm fine!
[DR.WHITE] //: Beck, quickly--you MUST stop it, before it destroys the whole laboratory!
[MN.9] //: M...ME?!
[MN.9] //: DAD THIS THING CAN CRUSH ME--
[DR.WHITE] //: YOU HAVE TO TRY! SOI IS STILL IN THERE!
[DR.SANDA] //: COME ON, BECKO--DO IT! OR WE'RE ALL TOAST...!
[MN.9 HAS ENTERED FULL COMBAT MODE.]
Beck: I'msodead--
[SCANNING...]
[SCAN COMPLETE.]
[ E N C O U N T E R ]
[CDN. 502 -- MODEL CODENAME: ROUND DIGGER]
[HEIGHT: 300cm] [WEIGHT: 450kg] [XEL COUNT: 90,000,000]
[The CherryDyn Number 502 charged once more, rolling across the room at RAPID speeds. Beck once again had to dodge, THIS time using his new AcXelarate Dash.]
[...It certainly was...Fast.]
[SPLAT.]
[A little...too fast.]
Beck: O-Ow--stupid wall-
[DR.WHITE] //: Your AcXelarate Dash is EXACTLY that, Beck! An acceleration! Use it wisely!
[DR.WHITE] //: You must weaken it with your weapon to destabilize it's Xel before you can absorb it with your Dash!
[MN.9] //: SO I JUST SHOOT AND RUN INTO IT?!
[DR.WHITE AND DR. SANDA] //: YES!
[The Round Digger reared up to charge once more--like a bull would.]
Beck: Crudcrudcrudcrud--
[WRRRRR...]
[BLAM BLAM BLAM!]
[Direct hits--but it didn't stop the CDN from charging.]
Beck: -nOT AGAIN--
[ZOOOM!]
[...And yet another splat.]
Beck: OW--
[DR.WHITE] //: Beck--are you alr--
Beck: NO IT'S NOT WORKING--!
[DR.WHITE] //: Perseverance, Beck! Aim for it's joints and head! Destabilize it's Xel structure!
Beck: Aim and shoot, joints, head--
[WRRRRRRRRRRR--]
[A panel opened up on it's back, revealing--]
[Bombs!]
Beck: --oh NO--
[Of course, it was a demolition unit!]
[BOOM!]
Beck: AAAAAAAAAAH--
[There he goes, dashing this way and that to avoid being blown to pieces!]
Beck: -SCREAMING-
Beck: DAD HELP ME--H ELP ME!
[DR.WHITE] //: I can't--! Not from here--!
[DR.SANDA] //: THE SYSTEMS ARE ALL SCRAMBLED FROM HERE, I CAN'T DO ANYTHING--!
[BOOM! BOOM!]
Beck: -I'MGONNADIEOHMAN-
[Nine keeps shooting--but they are wild and panicked shots, some hitting their target, some missing completely.]
[.....Eventually, however...]
[ERROR--ERROR--XEL STRUCTURE UNSTABLE--]
[...The CDN's head starting glowing purple! ]
[DR.WHITE] //: NOW, BECK!
[As soon as Beck saw it...]
[...He knew exactly what to do. As if it was instinct.]
[As if the thought was there all along.]
Beck: Here GOES!
[ZOOOM--]
[XEL ABSORBED. 100% --CDN XEL COUNT LOWERED 20%--]
[WARNING! WARNING! VIRUS DETECTED!]
Beck: --?!?
[RUNNING XELFILTER.EXE...]
[XEL FILTERED. ALL MALWARE HAS BEEN NEUTRALIZED.]
[ATTENTION: MORE XEL IS REQUIRED FOR A FULL XEL PURGE.]
Beck: (Xel...Purge...?)
[DR.WHITE] //: BECK! ABOVE YOU!
[The CDN had stopped charging--and--oddly enough, used it's extending legs to grab onto the ceiling...?]
Beck: ....???
[A panel UNDERNEATH it unlocks and--]
[PSSSSSSSSSH!]
[A HUGE high pressured blast of water SLAMMED into the Mighty Number, knocking him back into the door with a loud CLANK!]
Beck: AAGH!
[DR.WHITE] //: BECK!
Beck: Uuugh....
Beck: ...Ooooowww...
[...? What's this?]
[...All that did was... Just DAZE him, at best...]
Beck: That was...almost as hard as Cryo, ow...
[PISSSSSSSSSHHH!]
Beck: -gARBLING NOISES-
[DR.WHITE] //: MOVE, BECK!
[A bit shaky, Beck dashes away from the stream--]
Beck: sTOOOOOP--
[.....]
[OH! Wait--why didn't he think of this before?! He might not have his siblings by his side--]
[...But he had their FORMS, right?]
[...Right?]
[…]
[ERROR//: MN.7 REXELECTION FORM NOT FOUND. FORM WAS ERASED AFTER HARD RESET.]
[…Wrong.]
Beck: WHAT?!
[ERROR//: MN.1 REXELECTION FORM NOT FOUND. FORM WAS ERASED AFTER HARD RESET.]
Beck: NONONO!
[ERROR//: MN.2 REXELECTION FORM NOT FOUND....]
[ERROR....]
[ERROR...]
[ERROR...]
[...Gone.]
[They were all gone.]
[He had nothing. No forms except that STUPID golden one, and what good would THAT do?!]
Beck: NO!
Beck: DAD--I CAN'T CHANGE FORMS--!
Beck: I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO FIGHT WITH--!
[DR.WHITE] //: YES YOU DO, BECK!
[DR.WHITE] //: You have tools of which this world--or ANY world--have only just begun to see!
[DR.WHITE] //: USE THEM!
Beck: .....
Beck: --Shoot, dash, shoot, dash--
Round Digger: -R O A R S-
Beck: Shoot and dash, shoot and dash--!
[Repeating this mantra, Beck circled the CDN...]
[They both traded blows, neither of which seemed to be giving in or showing sign of fatigue--]
[...But...slowly...slowly but surely...]
[XEL ABSORBED.]
[XEL ABSORBED.]
[XEL ABSORBED.]
-PING-
[XEL QUOTA ACHIEVED.]
[XEL PURGE: ONLINE. XELFILTER.EXE PREPARED FOR OVERDRIVE.]
[DR.WHITE] //: ...!!!
[...A circle of white began to glow around Beck's feet...]
[A stream of Xel floated outwards, forming a large circle along with three dots and lines--his symbol...]
Beck: Come on--
[His arms started to shine a pure white!]
Beck: SNAP OUT OF IT!
[XEL PURGE INITIATED!]
Beck: NOW!
[A burst of green Xels flow out of the circle, and RIGHT back to the CDN! Rings of purged Xel incircle it, and slowly--it's...purple, tainted Xel fades...]
[........]
Round Digger: ....????
Round Digger: -BEEP-
Round Digger: -BEEP BEEP-
Round Digger: -CONFUSED DATA, THIS IS NOT OUR DESIGNATED AREA-
Beck: ...!!
Round Digger: -DISTRESSED BEEPING-
Beck: Hey--Hey...
Round Digger: -THIS IS NOT WHERE I'M SUPPOSED TO BEEEEEEEE-
[...Beck...cautiously approaches the CDN...]
[Closer...Closer...]
Beck: Hey....Are you OK?
Round Digger: -BEEEEEEEEEP!-
Beck: Hey--Hey, it's OK...
[...Pat. Pat...]
Beck: You're OK now, don't worry...
Round Digger: -SAD BEEP-
Round Digger: -BEEEEEP-
Beck: ....! Uh...hey--do you think you can help me?
Round Digger: ....? -beep?-
[MN.9] //: Dr. Sanda?
[.......There was no response at first. Both Doctors were still STUNNED at what just happened.]
[MN.9] //: Dr. Sanda!
[DR.SANDA] //: ...! Erm--ah--y-yes, Beck...?
[MN.9] //: You said the systems were haywire, right? So you can't unseal yourself...
[DR.SANDA] //: Well--I....oh.
[MN.9] //: So--I guess there's only one option, right?
[DR.WHITE] //: --! Of course! The Round Digger!
[DR.SANDA] //: W-Wait--Wait a min--
Round Digger: -PING-
Round Digger: -DIRECTIVE RECEIVED. COMMENCING DEMOLITION.-
Round Digger: -WARNING BEEPS, STAND CLEAR-
[DR.SANDA] //: -SHRIEKS, RUNS TO THE FARTHER ROOM-
[WRRRRRRRRRRRRR--]
[C R A C K!]
[With one powerful charge, the CDN Demo unit reared back once more and charged into the other wall, making a hole large enough for even MIC to walk into.]
[DR.SANDA]//: Did you REALLY have to do that?! This place is falling apart enough as it--
[DR.WHITE] //: We can worry about it later! Beck--neutralize any other threats in the building while I work with Soi to get at LEAST some of those systems back online...
[MN.9] //: Yes Sir!
[DR.SANDA] //: B-B-But--the lab is unsealed--
[DR.WHITE]//: I don't think we have to worry about that for now.
Round Digger: -BEEEEEEP-
[MN.9] //: Yeah, you can stay down here and make sure nothing gets past you, OK? That way you don't get hurt too. ^.^
[CDN.502] //: -BEEP BEEP, NEW DESIGNATION AREA CONFIRMED-
[DR.WHITE]//: Good, good. Be careful, alright?
[MN.9] //: Yeah. I will.
[Beck went back the way he came--through the recently re-opened door--while White stumbled through the opening, patting the CDN on it's side as he passed by.]
[...It took a while to find where Sanda had taken cover, but eventually--]
Sanda: Will!
White: Soi!
[Without another word, Sanda threw his arms around his beast friend, quite literally giving him a bear hug--]
White: Hurk--! Soi--!
Sanda: You have no IDEA how glad I am to see your face, friend--
White: Th-The feeling is mutual, Soi, but c-could you PLEASE let me breathe--
Sanda: --? Oh--OH. S-Sorry, William--Eheh, excuse me--
[White breathes in a few deep breaths once Sanda let's go, once again brushing himself off--but to no avail, as his clothing was more or less ruined.]
Sanda: Great Ceaser's Ghost, Will--you look like you've just been put through the wringer...!
White: That's...not wrong, Soi...at all...
Sanda: ...I can only imagine--I could hear everything from down here...
White: ....Did...you hear the broadcast...?
Sanda: Broadcast--?
White: ...Right, the systems are still scrambled—you wouldn't get anything...
Sanda: —…. Well—I… /did/ hear.... screaming—
"Dr. Sanda!"
[Passing through the crumbling wall, Beck reappeared, his pristine white armor slightly singed in several places--probably from laser fire.]
Beck: Dr. Sanda—!
Sanda: Beck--! Come here, you--!
[In a well meant hug of his own, Beck latched on to Sanda's leg, burying his face into it. Muffled cries of 'I'M SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU'RE OK' and 'SANDAAA' were heard while the Doctor fondly gave Nine a noogie.]
Sanda: Ha Ha! I KNEW you could do it, Mighty No. 9!
Beck: -MUFFLED NOISES-
White: Yes--well done, Beck...but, I'm afraid we still have work to do--have the other robots been taken care of?
Beck: I...did my best--some of them went outside, but I managed to absorb most of the ones on the upper floors...
White: That will do. Come on, Soi, let's TRY and get this lab running again--
Sanda: W-Wait a minute--
Sanda: I see here that BECK is functioning normally...
Sanda: But what happened to the OTHER Mighty Numbers...? Are they still OUT there...?
[........]
[… … …]
White: ....Sanda...
[...Will sighs...and takes up a straighter posture.]
White: Based on empirical evidence...I believe that they might be suffering from this... robot affliction that's been going around--and causing all this chaos...
Sanda: W-What--?!?
Sanda: You mean--Pyrogen, Cryosphere...
White: ...Yes, Soi...they've been infected with a virus. I saw the status of all of them on my laptop...
Sanda: No...!

[Jack had learned how to drive a lot of different vehicles in his on and off odd jobs–this pick-up truck was no exception. He STILL felt bad about taking something that wasn’t his–]
Jack: (I’ll have to write down the license plate and return it later…)
[…But Eli had a point.]
[This were dire times, and they called for drastic measures.]
Jack: ……..
[The road was…]
[Empty.]
[…Desolate, even.]
Jack: (Creepy…)
Jack: (I…I guess everyone already evacuated the major cities…right?)
Jack: (…..It’s–It’s too quiet.)
Jack: (Maybe whoever owns this truck has some decent tunes…?)
[He found nothing in the glove compartment–but he did find some CDs in the compartment in the middle. No labels, though. Shrugging, Jack popped one of the plainer looking ones and loaded up Track 1.]
Jack: –Oookay, let’s see what–
[What followed was SO loud and so disorientating, Jack almost lost control of the truck. Luckily, he pushed mute before he became completely deaf.]
Jack: ….What the hell?
[…Apparently the owner was a fan of hardcore screamo.]
Jack: (Jeezus, I’m NOT gonna listen to that for who KNOWS how long…)
Jack: (I’m NOT risking my ears for the other CDs–maybe the radio has something good-)
[Click!]
“–Check, check one, check two! Sibilance, sibilance!”
Jack: (…Oh. Right. I forgot…)
“And now, live from Avi News World Headquarters, continuing coverage of…! BA DA DA DA…! NATION. IN. CRISIS!”
Jack: Not exactly breaking news there, Six…
Jack: ……!!!
[Jack raises up the volume as he broadcast continues and unfolds…
It was a tense and harrowing broadcast, filled with harsh words from Avi, please from Beck—and then sudden, repeated interference, wherein Dyna screamed and strange music was played very loudly between bursts of static that were clearly Morse code.
It was soon clear that Beck was trying to take down Avi—alone!]
Jack: Oh God oh God–
[But he succeeded.
HE DID IT!]
[……]
[HOOOOOONK.]
Jack: HELL YEAH, KID, YA DID IT, WOO–!!
[As the comms were now officially freed from Avi’s viral grasp, Jack honked the horn of the truck several times in cheer. The kid–Beck–man, the little guy– who would’ve thought it?]
Jack: WOOOO HA–awwww man…!
Jack: Kid actually did it…
[It was nothing short of a miracle, in his eyes.]
[…….]
Jack: ……..
Jack: (……)
Jack: (Maybe–I can try to contact Miss Eight…?)
Jack: (….No–she wouldn’t answer, would she…)
Jack: (……..Maybe I should get around to calling the Russians to let them know where I went…?)
Jack: (….No, wait, bad idea–they’d probably try to stop me. Or try to teleport me out or something…)
Jack: (…I gotta let SOMEONE know I’m still kicking, though…)
Jack: ….
Jack: (…Ngh, screw it. Gotta take advantage of the comms before something ELSE goes screwy…)
[Jack rummages through his bag until he finds the burner phone, and scrolls though the list of contacts.]
[…It’s a very short list. There are only six numbers on it—
One for Dr. White, one for Dr. Cossack, one for a “Ms. Nighthawk,” one for her brother Goose, one for Kate herself, and one for Cardinal…]
Jack: ……
Jack: (…Kay, then. Doc Cossack.)
[CALLING…]
[…It worked!
…but he got… voicemail. Aaaaand of course the message was in Russian, and suddenly—]
[BEEEEP!]
[…Oh, right—now it was recording—]
Jack: …..
[That…that was not a good sign.]
[Why wasn’t he answering the phone?]
Jack: …..
Jack: Um…yeah, uh…Doctor Cossack…?
Jack: I–I don’t know if you remember me or anything, but–it’s…it’s Den. Dencerjack.
Jack: …Well, just Jack now but–yeah.
Jack: I…
Jack: …..
Jack: I hope you guys are OK too–really sorta scaring me that you’re not answering but–you’re probably helping out or busy or…something.
Jack …I hope.
Jack: I’m, uh…OK too. Sorta. Kinda. Almost died a couple of times–but I’m OK.
Jack: ……
Jack: I….
Jack: You probably think I’m stupid or crazy or something.
Jack: And in hindsight–
Jack: Iiiiiiii probably am.
Jack: You probably already figured out what I’m doing by now, I guess. If that Piers guy didn’t tell you–then again I didn’t exactly tell him everything either, so.
Jack: …..
Jack: Please don’t…
Jack: I…I have to know if she’s OK.
Jack: I just have to.
Jack: ……
Jack: So…
Jack: Good luck, and…tell the Xel kid I’m rooting for him.
Jack: ….See ya.
[Click.]
[…About a minute later…]
DOOdootdootDOOdootdootDOOdootdooDOO dootdooDOOdoodoodooDOOdoodoo…
[…It was Korobeiniki!]
Jack: …!?
Jack: (Holy crap holy crap–)
[ANSWER CALL.]
Jack: Doc??
[NOPE. Definitely not Doctor Cossack—]
“Mister Jack you ARE OKAY!”
[…Sooooomeone a lot younger. A little girl, to be precise.]
“If you are back, that means Father can talk to his friend again!”
Jack: …..
Jack: (…Isn’t this the kid from earlier…??)
“Where is мой герой?”
Jack: Uh–um–hold up, hold up–
Jack: Sorry, kid–I–I don’t speak or understand Russian–sorry–
Jack: Is your…Dad there?
[A pause, as if she’s thinking on how to answer that. Eventually, she seems to come to a conclusion.]
“Papa is at work. He gave the phone to me so I could call him.”
[Another pause.]
Jack: (Work–nah. He’s probably helping out or something, yeah. Whew.)
Jack: Alright–miss, do me a favor and tell your dad I called, OK?
Jack: What about you–are you somewhere safe?
[Another pause, with muffled sounds of talking. Then an eager return.]
“Yes! I am with my brother still. Papa is in the Meadow working on Tobias and helping learn about the virus.”
Jack: (Ah, knew it–guess she never left…)
“Where is Mister Cardinal?”
Jack: I….I don’t know, miss.
Jack: …I’m sorry.
[Russian complaining as she’s clearly holding the phone away from her face to talk to the other person there. Sounds of others talking in the background, and then more agitated Russian, with Shade’s name thrown in there several times.]
Jack: (Oooooohkaaaay…)
“It’s okay, Kalinka—He rescued you, I’m sure he can handle himself—”
[More Russian.]
“Is Jack still on the line?”
“…! OH! Oops…”
[Aaaand she’s back.]
“Sorry, Mister Jack. I was distracted.”
Jack: (Yeah, I could hear you from here–)
Jack: Um, it’s fine, Miss…Kalinka.
“Where are you? Are you in America?”
Jack: Uuuuh….
Jack: …..
Jack: -Somewhat nervously- Y-Yeeeaah, right. USA. Got there through the Meadow and Wilderness.
[Cheerful talking in the background.]
“Mr. Verde says that you are clever to take the Wilderness shortcut, and is very curious where you ended up.”
[Another pause.]
“…And that the highways might be dangerous?”
Jack: I…um.
Jack: …
Jack: Yeah, got it. I’ll be careful.
Jack: I…ended up somewhere REAL rainy. Uh. Yeah.
Jack: (Iiiii don’t know how much I can tell this kid with the other person with her…)
Jack: It’s been…a real experience.
[A bit of a pause.]
“…Will you come back soon? And be safe in the Meadow, да?”
Jack: ……
Jack: Sure, Miss.
Jack: I’ll be back.
Jack: (…In one piece, hopefully…)
“Okay. I’ll let my older brother know to make you some ice cream! Be safe, Mister Jack! Bye now.”
[Click.]
Jack: ….
Jack: Yeah…
Jack: -SIGHS-
[The CherryDyn Number runs a nervous hand over silvery locks, driving further into the highway that ran through the state. If he kept going, he’d eventually hit Utah…]
Jack: Hooo jeez…
Jack: (Gotta stay away from the bigger interstates–THAT one’s probably got some remote control cars and if the virus got THOSE…)
[At least there wasn’t any traffic here…so far.]
Jack: (OK, time to think, Jack…)
Jack: (Miss Eight’s gonna go after her own brother–but WHERE could he be is the question…)
Jack: (Seven, Seven…)
Jack: (Brandish, sword guy. He can cut ANYTHING, they say. Oh, man…)
[Seeing as he had little to go on, Jack once again turned on the radio. News reports were flooding airwaves at last as he kept driving onwards–they were mostly damage reports and warnings…]
Jack: (Nothing new there…)
Jack: (Come ON, there has to be SOMETHING–Anything–!)
“Robots are still going berserk across the country–”
Click.
“We implore any fleeing civilians to please be safe and stay away from–”
“–Susan if you can hear this PLEASE CALL ME WE’RE SO WORRIED–”
“–We have confirmation of havoc caused by a rouge robot directly attacking–”
“CherryDynamics has confirmed that communications have been restored–”
Jack: (–!!)
Jack: Wait what was that–
Click.
“–Highway Alpha 6 is under attack, I repeat, Highway Alpha 6 is under attack–Eyewitnesses have spotted a rouge robot destroying vehicles with no regard to innocent life–”
Jack: …?
“We have reports that the rouge robot is armed with bladed weapons and is currently in the Four Corners area–”
Jack: –!!!
Jack: (Wow–that HAS to be the most luck I’ve gotten in all this…)
Jack: (It’s gotta be Seven–gotta be…!)
[Four Corners…that wasn’t TOO far from here…]
Jack: (Wherever she is–she’s probably heading there now, if she isn’t already–)
Jack: (I hope this thing can handle going a hu–)
Jack: ……
[…..That sound–and the smoke coming from the bottom of the hood certainly weren’t very good signs.]
[It was official–]
[Jack had the worst luck in the entire world, and he was not afraid of screaming his frustration into the steering wheel.]
Jack: (Why–WHY.)
[After sitting in despair for a couple of minutes, Jack stepped out of the truck, slammed the door, and walked to the smoking engine.]
[A BLAST of black soot and heat pounded his face.]
Jack: Uuuugh, please let it not be the battery…
[…Nope, wasn’t the battery at all.]
[It was the cooling system–he ran out of water.]
Jack: (Greaaaaat, it overheated…)
Jack: (Guess I gotta fix it–though, where am I gonna get some water…?)
Jack: (First there was too MUCH of it back in Seattle and now there’s not enough…tch…)
Jack: (Uuugh, let’s see, let’s see–)
[He scours the back, but no such luck. Eventually, he decides to check the cooler that was given to him.]
Jack: (…! Yes…! Some gallons–nice and cool, too, okay…)
[Once again popping open the hood, he starts pouring in the water, looking over anything else he needs to fix…]
Jack: (Fuel line looks OK, battery is good…)
[……]
[Virrrrrrrr…]
Jack: …?
[What was that noise…?]
[VIRRRRRR…..]
Jack: …..!
[In the distance, he could JUST make out a few vehicles heading this way–at a rather fast pace, actually.]
Jack: (Huh…)
Jack: (Wonder if they’re from Seattle too–)
[TH-WANG!]
Jack: –?!?
[Was that–]
[TH-WHAG!]
Jack: (G-Gunfire!)
[One of the bullets managed to stray off and hit the hood of the truck, causing Jack to yelp in terror.]
Jack: (Are–Are they shooting AT me??)
Jack: (Oh my God what did I DO–)
[With no desire to find out, Jack slammed the hood down and scrambled for the wheel, quickly putting on his seat belt and–]
Jack: (Come on START ALREADY–!!)
[Another shot bounced off the roof of the car–!]
[The engine turned over at last–]
Jack: (FINALLY THANK YOU–)
[He FLOORS it, back on the road, adjusting his rearview mirror in order to spot the shooters in the vehicles behind him–which were catching up FAST.]
Jack: …. Wait a sec–
[Were those… motorcycles? ]
Jack: Nonono–
[A group of about 7 motorcycles, of all kinds, tearing though the highway at speeds that FAR exceeded the legal limit. Gunfire rang out into the sky, as well as the asphalt around Jack’s stolen truck.]
Jack: (CRAP, THEY’RE GONNA SHOOT OUT THE TIRES–)
Jack: (I gotta outrun them–no WAY am I gonna get pulled over and mugged by some motor gang–!)
Jack:(Not when I’m this close…!)
Jack: (Alright, weird, magic bag that I still don’t have any idea how you work–)
Jack: (Do you got ANYTHING that can help me deal with these guys…??)
[Jack drove unsteadily, swerving with one hand on the wheel as he rummaged in the bag blindly with the other. He somehow reached past the cooler—as he flicked his hand, something new would come within reach each time.]
[Okay… there was the cooler, the lantern, the bedding stuff, some sort of first-aid kit, some… feathers? (Huh?)]
Jack: …..
Jack: (What the fraaaag–?? What IS that–)
Jack: (Something–cool…and–)
Jack: OW–ow what was that–?? (Feels like I pricked myself–??)
[Then he grasped what seemed to be a squishy disc. It sure seemed to be giving off a lot of heat, though…]
Jack: (….E-Ew–)
[After glancing backwards and wincing a bit at the gunfire around him, Jack pulls out the squishy-like disk….]
Jack: …..-Sniff…?-
Jack: Oil…?
Jack: …
Jack: ….!
[Oil–!]
[If he threw it out the window just right–]
[VIRRRRRRRRRRRRR–!!]
“GET ‘EM, BOYS–!”
Jack: (SCRAPSCRAPSCRAP–)
[With one swift movement, Jack looked out the window–the glass was already down–and threw the sticky disk far out behind him!]
Jack: (Hope this works—!!)
[The rush of speed-created wind practically ripped the disc out of his hands. As the pursuers were not that far behind, there was no way it could miss. And indeed—]
[—It splattered all across the ground, running oil all over the road—]
“OH SH–”
“[FRAAAAAG–]”
“WHA–”
[And then said oil caught on FIRE.]
Jack: …..
Jack: (OH MY GOD.)
Jack: UM–
[The motor gang had slipped on the oil, crashed into each other–and was now trying to put out the flames from their clothes and rides. They cursed after Jack as he sped away, leaving them in his dust.]
Jack: (Iiiii really hope the bikes don’t explode or anything–)
Jack: -SWERVES-
Jack: HOLY FRAG–
Jack: Oh my God I made them explode–
Jack: What in the HELL IS IN THIS MAGIC BAG?!
Jack: When I drive far enough I am gonna really look through this thing, darn it–
Jack: (I really hope those guys are OK oh man–)
Jack: Frag frag now I have oil flare things and who knows what in the truck–great–just what I needed–
Jack: Lord Almighty–Miss Eight why can’t you just call me or something, so I at least know you’re alive or something–anything–
[The CDN continued to grumble, fidget, and slightly panic as he turned into the interstate–Highway Alpha 12.]
[…They said that Seven was in Alpha 6, much further ahead…]
[This was gonna take a while.]
Jack: (Almost there, Miss Eight…)
Jack: (Just–a little further…!)
Jack: (Just a little more and then…)
Jack: ……
Jack: …..
[…And then?]
[He didn’t think he’d get this far.]
[What was he gonna do IF Kate WASN’T well at all?]
[What chance did he have against the world’s best assassin?]
[The world’s best hunter gone completely MAD?]
Jack: …
Jack: (…She’s…gonna try to kill me, isn’t she?)
Jack: (Hell, SIX didn’t have ANY problem with air striking his own little brother…)
Jack: (If I get in her way…)
Jack: …….
[He really didn’t want to think on it, but he couldn’t help but picture it. He’d already felt the brush of death once before….]
Jack: ……..
Jack: (…God, Miss Eight would never forgive herself if–if she…)
Jack: …
Jack: “No one has greater love than this…”
Jack: …
Jack: (…I…I think I get what you were trying to do now, Bird Guy…)
Jack: (Jeez…)
Jack: (You’d BETTER come back alive, too…)
[He floors it.]
Jack: (I don’t think either of them would forgive themselves if we kicked the bucket and it’s by THEIR own hands…)
Jack: (….)
Jack: (…Never had good odds.)
Jack: (Never had real good luck.)
Jack: (But I think, for once, I’d like to beat those odds.)
Jack: (I’ll DRAG Miss Eight back if I have to–!)
Jack: (Dying–that’s not an option.)
Jack: (Not for me OR her…!)
Jack: (I don’t care if you’ll try and shoot me dead–)
Jack: (I can’t…I can’t let you do this…!)

[She grinned as she walked away from the scene.
Sure, it hadn’t been her cause, but still. He deserved it.
She hadn’t even given Gravecrasher the honor of one of her lipstick darts. Let him be another nameless victim, for all she cared.
He had paid his dues, and danced /oh/ so well.
It was time to continue elsewhere.]

{Meanwhile…}
[Felix looked up from the console as shouting intensified.
He had been focusing on analyzing his own notes on the whole matter, but now…]
<DWN-019>: > GRAH! Why won’t you LISTEN to me!?
<DWN-013>: >No offense, bro, but if that’s all—
<DWN-019>: > IT’S NOT, YOU TWITS!
<DWN-019>: >There are some temporal anomalies and you’re all getting caught up in it! It’s not just you, it’s Mikhail as well—and do I need to remind you, YOU SPECIFICALLY, TWELVE, of how dangerous that could be to YOU, personally?
<DWN-012>: > -Mnnrrgh…!-
<DWN-019>: > Where is Mikhail?!
Felix: -Narrows his eyes a little- -Out loud even though Siam can’t hear- He’s resting— you shouldn’t even be calling, there’s a reason he told me to keep it quiet…
<DWN-019>: >I need Cardinal over here to properly oversee the updates, and I need his help with—
<DWN-013>: > Ugh—
<DWN-013>: >I’m SORRY, Gem, but— -BLAM!- 000 is still processing everything, we can’t move him yet, and it seems there are other problems—
<DWN-019>: >HOW can this possibly get worse?
<DWN-013>: > -Irritable- I think Mikhail is under arrest, Gemini!
Des: --....
Des: (Damn it...)
Des: (Ugh, with the way the Doctor and the Mighties reacted to that, I don't even want to think about how THEY will...)
<DWN-019>: > …
[The feeds were slammed with acerbic data.]
<DWN-019>: > -PANIC DATA-
<DWN-019>: > -PANIC PANIC PANIC-
<DWN-011>: > …
<DWN-011>: > …Joking, right?
<DWN-011>: > Right?
<DWN-012>: > He was IN handcuffs, brother—
<DWN-019>: > Nnnnnnnn-nnn-nnn-noo—
<DWN-019>: > Stars above I don’t think I can do this—
<DWN-018>: >Look, I doubt that if—
<DWN-019>: >IT DOESN’T MATTER! NOT WHAT YOU THINK!
<DWN-019>: > I DON’T HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO KEEP THAT DATA FROM REACHING THE COSSACK NUMBERS!
Felix: ?!
Des: --...
Des: (Son of a...)
Des: (This is exactly what the Doctor said before...)
<DWN-018>: > Are you serious.
<DWN-019>: >I’m not the Admin, Nico! I don’t have that kind of power!
<DWN-018>: > That’s it. As head of the family, I’m intervening. Dealing with our dysfunctions is plenty; I am not going to put up with fighting the Russians.
<DWN-018>: >Siam, there’s got to be SOMETHING you can do—
<DWN-019>: > Well I’ll TRY to stall—I think I can by changing the data Snow gets— but hurry up as much as you can, I need the rest of the family back as soon as possible!
[MN.6] //: Roger Dodger–
<DWN-018>: >Fine, do it. Gem, get that guy on the line. We’ve got to talk this out before it gets out of hand. And as for you two…
<DWN-018>: >Speedy, Jaden, you guys were BUILT for Combat, can’t you work ANY faster?!
<DWN-013>: > Grrr…
<DWN-013 has entered Lethal Combat mode.>
[MN.1] //: –!!
[Jaden began to glow white.]
Felix: -Stands, raising an eyebrow- ?
Des: What in the--?
Des: (What is this bright LIGHT? It's almost like...Nine's...?)
Felix: !
((pic))
Jaden: I DON’T HAVE TIME FOR THIS!
[MN.1] //: ??!?
[Jaden had changed. The was larger now, and bulkier—and based on the energy ratings from him, he was packing some SERIOUS heat.]
Felix: Well this is new—
Des: (These Robot Masters can change forms too?)
[Hatches popped open.
YEP. Those were some sort of missiles inside.]
Jaden: WE’RE TAKING A DETOUR!
Felix: Goodness. I wasn’t aware they had this capacity.
Des: (...For some reason, that doesn't comfort me in the slightest.)
Des: (Do they ALL have this level of form shifting...?)
[He wasn’t given much time to think on it. A notification opened up a third window in the screen.]
[INCOMING CALL]
Felix: …
Felix: I… I’m not sure how to answer that, but I think we really should.
Des: (....)
[After a brief glance at Felix, Des himself walks over to the terminal and presses a single button, accepting the call.]
Des: (I got a good guess who this is...)
[Nico’s face greeted him on the screen. He was wearing full armor, minus the helmet, and his arms were crossed.]
Des: (...And I was completely wrong--)
Des: -Raises eyebrow- ...I assume you want to speak to either this guy-- -Jabs his thumb behind him-
Des: ...Or me.
Nico: I’m assuming with you, as I know who Felix is.
Des: -Yup, thought so-
Nico: What’s Dr. Cossack’s physical condition? Is he okay?
Des: He's sleeping, right now. Resting. (Even though he really didn't want to, I noticed, but that Felix person did something to get him to rest...)
[Nico seemed to relax quite a bit at this.]
Nico: Thank goodness… that should buy us more time…
Des: (...So this must be one of his patients, I would think...)
[He turns to yell over his shoulder.]
Nico: Siam! The Doctor’s okay, he’s just sleeping!
[As he does so, the brand on his shoulder is visible:
DWN-018. ]
Des: (Another DWN...)
Nico: Okay, next question—
Nico: What’s going on over there? Is he really under arrest, or is my brother exaggerating?
Des: ....
Des: Sir...
Des: Dr. Cossack is currently in custody for...unauthorized access into federal security.
Nico: -Pained expression- (Oh no…)
Des: ...
Des: (And there is still the matter of the Military Base's security breach too...)
Des: Since the Doctor... simply refused to answer all of our questions...
Des: I am...
Des: ...
Des: ...Ugh...
Des:
I am forced to put him under arrest given the situation, and--
Nico: !
Nico: You mean— (N-no, they mentioned handcuffs…)
[He holds his head in his hands, looking very concerned.]
Nico: Might I suggest an alternate form of restraints? Anything?
Des: . . .
Nico: First of all, that… that’s… not exactly what happened. And second of all…
Nico: He was kept chained up in some form or another for at least three months, maybe up to as much as six—and this wasn’t too long ago.
Nico: My brother used spikes on the inside of the bracers, even.
Des: .....
Des: (The burns...)
Des: ....
Des: I'll see what I can do in that regard. …I promise.
Nico: …Thank you.
Des: ....
Des: -Looks to the side- He told me. Showed me, actually.
Des: About where you're from.
Nico: —… -Looks to the side himself, rather distressed expression- (He can’t mean Monstropolis… that would only make Toby look worse…)
Nico: -Forces himself to hear this out-
Des: ....
Des: I still don't completely understand why, but.
Des: ...
Des: I can tell the Doctor...he isn't what the law thinks he is right now.
Des: >> If anything, I know he's stonewalling.
Des: Listen.
Des: I can't...
Des: ....
Des: If he keeps doing that...
Des: . . .
Nico: Please—
Nico: Please don’t SAY it, I can’t—
Des: .......
Nico: Nnng…
Nico: We’re connected to the RMDC, his sons will pick up on that data.
Des: >> (Right....)
Des: ...
Des: (Man, Min, I don't know about you, and no offense, but this is REALLY the worst part of the job...)
Nico: Sir, I…
Nico: (Nnngh…! I can’t just hand Tobias over, but I can’t let Dr. Cossack take the fall for this! Even if I felt like it, his sons…)
Nico: We… can’t we talk this out? Just a little bit? I really don’t want this getting out of control…
Nico: My brother is good, but after M—… after what happened to the First Gens, Mikhail made sure no one else could mess with his kids’ minds, and that includes outside Doctors our equivalents.
Nico: So… we don’t have a whole lot of time, either. I’ll try to stick to the point.
Nico: What happened with the system was more complex than that. What he probably told you is the super-simplified version. Interaction in the Cloud… that’s not how it happened.
Nico: He printed out notes… do you have those on hand?
Des: Mmm--right, I do...
Nico: You might want to read those as I talk this over.
Nico: First of all, he did try getting feeds from the Pentagon first. He had Sanda’s secretary call, I think. But when that didn’t work, he knew that the security system was out of control.
Nico: So when he says he ordered Tobias to take over the security… he means that in the sense he’d have to fight it, and more precisely, the malevolent force controlling it.
Nico: From what I understand based on the data we’re getting in the update, he had to tell Tobias not to go overboard and zap both the system and Shade to soot crisps.
Des: (What--?)
Des: -Flipping though the notes-
Des: (...Shade does have a weakness to electricity, true...)
Nico: Fighting through infected security isn’t an easy ordeal, sir.
Nico: The Cloud is a desolate and dangerous place. Your systems, when they are fully working, would be… like fires of Hell to any unauthorized program—including Awareness ones. Firewalls manifest that way, metaphorically speaking. And viruses? Eldritch abominations. Monsters.
Nico: Fighting against the virus was to restore control to your systems. Because staying there? Would have meant more fighting, and just about equally dangerous fighting.
Des: (--!)
Des: (That explains the sudden return of our feeds--)
Des: (It was in OUR favor--?)
Nico: And that is what happened. As the virus was being pushed back, your firewalls started turning back on.
Nico: Part of the reason Tobias got so agitated and aggressive—don’t know if you heard him while you were there—part of that was that he was starting to get burned by them, and it hurt.
Des: . . .
Nico: -Scratches his head- Trying to get in if the firewalls had been working wouldn’t have been a quick or easy task. The reason Tobias got inside so quickly is because they were down.
Nico: If he’d had to disable them first, I dunno… he’s brilliant, but I don’t think he’s ever intentionally done THAT before. Not to my knowledge. (Other things, yeah, but getting around firewalls he wasn’t already immune to? Not so much.) He couldn’t even bypass the RMDC firewall, actually.
Nico: Barring the control being returned, though, Dr. Cossack needed Tobias to keep it from going too out of control. To take the controls from the virus to keep her from frying Beck, Cardinal, and you guys. Which is what he means by shutting it down.
Nico: It’s hard for an outsider to know what happened in there, sir. He had to cover all options when he let Tobias go, and when he told you about it. I’m not sure how much he knows about what happened.
Des: ......
Nico: Before that incident, well…
Nico: He’s been working on things for Cardinal for a VERY long time. It’s within the past few days for both of us that he’s made some real progress. Medical progress. And he…
Nico: I’m not sure if anyone told you, sir, but there are only three Doctors of his caliber in our entire world. He’s the only one we can trust. Literally… the only Doctor in the world who can do this. Unfortunately…
Nico: …That kinda has exacerbated his innate tendency to wear himself out.
[He sighed and rubbed his eyes with his right hand.]
Nico: Man, he must be exhausted. After all that this has put us through, we all just want it to stop. I’m not surprised he gave the short version—
Nico: Do you know what would happen if any of us were caught?
Des: . . .
Des: It was mentioned.
Nico: …
Des: -Sigh- Ngh...
Des: (Well, this just...)
Des: (The fact that he tried to help us, it makes things better, but unless I can get it out of him...)
Des: (Ugh, but he doesn't even have the energy to be AWAKE right now...)
Nico: He didn’t consult with us beforehand, you know, before talking with you. >.>
Nico: He doesn’t have the authority to give direct orders to Wily Numbers. I’m sure he could if he wanted to, but he respects us more than that. The ability to shut us off was a negotiated exchange for using his server to house our extended neural network.
Nico: No one would have approved of him taking everything onto himself, but…
Des: >>;; (Even I don't...)
Nico: What are you planning to do to my brother if you were to get your hands on him? -Visibly afraid-
Des: Well, we aren't going to dismantle him, if that's what you're...Well.
Des: -We KNOW it's practically murder, honestly--
Des: From the account you've given and Cossack's own...
Des: ....
Des: All we want are a few answers.
Des: Some sense out of this entire mess, and honestly, even the answers themselves are a little... -I don't even have a proper word for it-- ...Delicate...
Nico: I can try…
Nico: Was there something else you were wondering about?
Des: Cossack already explained the Queen's Finals, in a sense.
Des: ....
Des: There was...
Des: Also another security breach, but not at the White House.
Nico: I don’t know how he got past the Brit firewalls, I’m going to guess an emergency services loophole—
Des: Not that. (Though that explains some things.)
Des: The...incident regarding MNN-005.
Nico: …
Nico: Huh?
Des: There was a security breach then where Battalion was...infected.
Nico: Wait, Bat—
Nico: Oh GEEZ—
[He looks TERRIFIED. There are a number of pings in the database showing that the whole line was going into Defensive mode…]
Nico: If—if everyone went where—
[His pupils shrank to only just being visible, and he broadcast over his speakers out of fear.]
Nico: “OH GLITCH YOU MEAN HE WENT TO— HE WENT TO A MILITARY BASE?!”
Des: (...An unauthorized base.)
Des: -~- -This is almost embarrassing to say-
Des: (Still, it seems like I won't be getting answers here too.)
Des: Was DLN-008 active during that time?
Nico: No way! He was still out cold from being fused with Avi!
Des: (So it wasn't him...)
Des: (WHO, then? Some third party?)
Nico: Avi saw the depths of suffering that floats about the collective consciousness, it was bad.
Des: . . .
Nico: Oh man—does Mikhail know? He’s going to freak if he hears that those kind of “fireworks” were getting ready to go live. It’s been our mission since learning of this world to try and prevent—…
[He winced for a moment, seeming to calm down again.]
Nico: …try and prevent things from… reaching what they got for us.
Des: ...More or less...
Des: -Long sigh-
Des: =~=
Nico: Ouch.
Nico: No, that wasn’t us, and it wouldn’t have been Mikhail either. Especially not after the Russian incident. If Cardinal hadn’t gotten there in time, he would have died and that would have set off WWIII. He really still blames himself for this, and he’s super sensitive about it. He wouldn’t have done that.
[A pause.]
Nico: After Beck fixed up Toby and Avi, Toby was asleep until Cossack woke him up to try and get the White House feeds back. He, uh… well. Tobias needed the rest, honestly. It was a very disorienting experience.
Des: (I can only imagine...)
Nico: Sorry, but you’re going to have to look elsewhere for your base phantom.
Des: (Ugh, now what? I'm out of leads...)
Des: (...But at least I have a good idea of what this DLN-008 is like...)
Des: (They all really need some help...)
Nico: I… I don’t think that it’s fair to say Dr. Cossack is responsible for us, no. We’re… sorry about all that’s happened. All we wanted was to… hang out with our friends. Everything just started to get out of whack starting with the finals…
Nico: Poor Jack, too. Sawblade to the back, ow.
[Another pause.]
Nico: -Looking off to the side, still with a concerned expression- I’ll be honest with you, Mister Secretary.
Nico: I’m not just going to hand my older brother over. I can’t do that.
Des: .....
Nico: But… Dr. Cossack… he in all honesty is just our medical provider. He doesn’t have control over us the way he does with his sons. Who by the way, are going to really panic [color=black]if[/color]… -Trails off-
Nico: I’m sorry that he wouldn’t answer the questions, but… that’s the truth of the matter—from the finals to the White House.
Nico: We still want to help sort this out as much as we can, you know. I know Dr. Cossack would help unravel this…
Nico: …if he weren’t in trouble, of course—and also not so exhausted. >.>;
Nico: Isn’t there something that can be done?
Des: Unless Dr. Cossack can say this on record himself, I--
[There’s sudden yelling from one of the feeds.]

Des: (At the very least, he has SOMEONE protecting him...)
Des: =_= (Although I still think it's nuts.)

Nico: —!
[He looks… shocked at something.]
Des: --?
Nico: “R-Roll—?” -Reaching his hand out to touch the screen-
Des: --???
Gemini: -OH GLITCH expression-
Nico: (N-no… it’s not her, it…)
Siam: NICO YOU STAY PUT—
[Unfortunately, this was the worst thing that Siam could have said. Nico quickly snapped out of it, and his data became almost horrifically aggressive as he turned to glare at his brother—his eyes burned green as his helmet appeared.]
Nico: …You—
[There was a burst of data as everything was VIOLENTLY flung outward by a sudden magnetic field, Siamini included.]
Nico: YOU’VE BEEN /LYING/ TO ME—!
Felix: Oh dear…
Des: . . .
Des: | /;;;;; (Um...)
Nico: How dare you keep this a secret from me?! You’ve denied her MONTHS of time, of celebrations and sadness alike, all because you thought that I couldn’t handle it?!
Siam: -Sitting up, rubbing his head, also in armor now- Alnico—
Nico: DON’T!
Nico: Don’t call me by that name SHE gave me, don’t use it to LIE further!
Nico: We’re going to talk this over later, Geminiman. Talk about two-faced…
Nico: -Narrows his eyes to glance over in Des’s direction in a glare-
[His face plate at least gives the advantage of making him only look annoyed. How mad he really was was hard to say.]
Nico: Permission to enter the building, sir?
Des: --What, the Prison--
Des: . . .
Des: (In hindsight, I have no idea if Call can even handle the K-9...)
Des: (Sanda doesn't have an entire team behind him like White does.)
Des: (He's going to need back up.)
Des: Permission granted.
Nico: -Nods and salutes with two fingers-
[He then hovers out of there, gaining momentum. Gemini helps Siam up, and the two of him look at the transmitter.]
Siamini: Great.
Gemini: He knocked out the transmitter.
Siam: At least that’ll buy us a bit more time…
Gemini: …Are we still transmitting? How?
Siam: Because Felix is there. Something about Psynergy…
Felix: -Shakes his head- I’d focus on the Cossack Numbers for now. : / The Second Generation Wily Numbers are capable of handling themselves: you know this. Though I must ask—did you know about the second forms?
Siam: Not exactly, no—
Gemini: I’ll have to get back to you on that later.
Siamini: Nineteen out.
[That feed closes.]
Felix: -Looks over at Des- …
Des: . . .
Des: (...This is going to be a long day.)
Des: ....
Des: Do you have something else that can...Er.
Des: >> -Looks at Mikhail-
Des: (I'd ask for rope, but that seems insulting too.)
Felix: I can use Halt on him.
Des: . . .Right. . .
Des: (...Just who is...--and how did he do that, back there...)
Felix: …If you need something more conventional… well, I’ll see what I’ve got on me.
[…He starts pulling out some things that just WOULDN’T—or SHOULDN’T—fit in a bag that size.]
Des: O.o???? (What.)
Des: (How--how would that even--)
Felix: Why is it always on the bottom of the bag under all the extra equipment…
Des: (Did he just pull out a suit of ARMOR?)
Des: -Blinks-
Felix: Ah, here we go.
[He pulls out what appears to be some large rocks, a few crystals, some silk, and some reptilian leather.]
Felix: This should work, temporarily, at least.
Des: --???
[Felix used GROWTH!]
((pic))
[A vine started growing from a gathering of Venus psynergy near the floor. Felix let it snake through his hands, intertwining with the silk to create a harness of some sort. He went over to place it around Cossack gently before it finished and bound up together, becoming enclosed.
The leather encased the vines to create the appearance of straps, and it ran to the rocks and crystals. Felix then used these together to create a strong cable, which ended at a stop within the floor itself.
The cable was long enough to allow for sitting, standing, and slight movement in sleep, but not much else. Not being within reach of a console, the only way he could have any input now was to use voice commands—and he was asleep.]
Felix: I trust that will do, at least for now?
Des: . . .
Des: Uh...yeah. o_o (Who IS this person--?)
Felix: -Notices this look and grins- Is there something you wanted to ask me, Master Desmond?
Des: ....
Des: -Yeah I kinda have a question or 50-
Felix: Go ahead. -Looks at the screens, where everyone is busy fighting- We’ve got a while.
Des: ....
Des: How did you...do that?
Des: That and...Back there, with the Mighties and the Doctor...
Felix: Psynergy. Your world might call it “magic,” but it follows a defined set of rules, just as much as physics does.
Felix: I’m not quite human, myself; not in the traditional sense.
Des: (He's not human--?)
Des: (...Well, I guess that makes a little sense, if he can do all that...)
Felix: Research I’ve done indicates that in my world, humanity split into three branches. What most people think of as human is a different branch than what I am. We are closer to “monsters” than to “humans” in most but appearance and behavior. Like many monsters, we can make use of elemental energy, or Psynergy. We are also incredibly sturdy.
Felix: However…
[He pulls off his own gloves.]
Des: ...--!
[Like Mikhail, he has scars— burn scars, but also nasty healed cuts—all over his forearms and some on the back of his hands.]
Felix: We are not invincible.
[He takes off his cape and pulls down on the inside of his collar enough to show there are more around his neck and over his collarbone, probably continuing over his torso.]
Felix: I was trained by Mars Adepts—dragon sons and daughters. They were harsh and often cruel taskmasters.
Felix: I am not a Mars Adept—their style is not my way. Venus Adepts are best at defense and hard hits, not taking the initiative. It took a lot of hard hits from much stronger warriors before we all realized and came to accept that fact.
Felix: That was not the end, however.
[He puts the cape back on.]
Felix: One of my former sparring partners—and one of the two last Warriors of the clan—attempted, with the other remaining Warrior, to kill me atop the perilous heights of Jupiter Lighthouse.
Felix: I was not strong enough to withstand her. If someone else hadn’t intervened, I would have been killed then and there. Her preparation to do so was the last thing I remembered before my strength left me entirely due to the injuries.
Felix: -Pulls his gloves on- I was quite unhappy when the hands of fate—or rather, that which claims to be so—pulled a nasty trick at Mars Lighthouse, and I was forced into a darkness that has ever stained my hands and haunted my dreams. She was but one of the five casualties in that place—all of them tricked onto us, and carried out under my command.
Des: (Jeez, this all sounds like some kinda...storybook or something...)
Des: (With not a very happy fairytale context...)
Felix: But even that would not prove to be the end.
Felix: When we finally came home—somewhere I had not been in years, in nearly five years—
Felix: My former best friend—who by the way, had spent the better part of the last two years quite literally chasing me across the world to the ends of the earth in the effort to slay me—
Felix: —went and told someone that I had been involved in restoring the elemental energy of our world to the natural balance.
Felix: This was forbidden in our home land, and punishable by death.
Des: . . .
Felix: -Shakes his head- I was chased out, and haven’t been home since. I don’t know if I’ll ever see my family again, not in this life.
Felix: Since then, I have wandered the worlds. That is how I came to meet the Rebel Angels, and later the Mighty Numbers.
Felix: I fought Countershade myself, once, before all of this.
Des: You what--
Des: --.... (He isn't human but still, against Eight--?)
Felix: It was a test of endurance, and I lost. We were both holding back, of course—I wouldn’t use my true power on them, not without good reason.
((pic))
Felix: Venus is the element of man… the element of the earth, yes, of plants and the ground, of living things…
((pic))
Felix: …But also of death, of poisons and necromancy, the Judgement of the world…
Felix: While it can be intoxicating, that kind of power is not a toy, and not to be used in play. No—I’d only use that in great need.
Felix: I did lose, but it was a close judges’ call—as I had managed to wear him to exhaustion as well.
Des: . . .
Des: (I...)
Des: ....
Des: (I think I have severely misjudged the scope of all this... Again...)
Des: And you...come here, often...?
Felix: What, to California?
Des: Yes...
Felix: No… I’ve only been over here for birthday celebrations. Everything else was at the Meadow.
Des: --I heard one of the Robot Masters say that before...
Des: The Meadow.
Des: I don't suppose that is code for anything...
Felix: No, not really. It is a literal meadow. Nice place, really. There is a VR set up there, as well as a lab/recreational center.
Felix: I live further out in the undefined parts of reality, in the Wilderness. That’s where Eight and I fought.
Felix: It is a very nice place, and I imagine you’ll be seeing it once the time is right.
Des: --Me?
Felix: Though with time being what it is, you might “already” have done so, and the memories will catch up to you.
Des: --.....
Des: Are you saying I might have already--BEEN there?
Felix: There’s a good chance of that, yes.
Des: I...
Des: Good Lord...
Felix: I understand this can be overwhelming, sir, particularly given your responsibilities. But now that you know, you are only more likely to learn more, to better understand the situation and learn who is friend and who is foe.
Felix: There are more parties in play besides the Rebel Angels and the Cossack Numbers, their sister, and their father.
Des: (....More...?)
Des: (...He can't mean Blackwell, can he?)
Des: ...Like...What?
Felix: For starters, mirror realities. There is a “what-if” come true that has become very close with your own. Tell me…
Felix: Do you remember the publicity campaign for when Mighty Number Eight was first being revealed?
Des: (...That was out of left field...)
Des: ....
Des: There were a few adverts for the overall cowboy design...
Des: (But they looked...)
((pic))
Des: (...Different than what Eight does now...)
Des: ...What does that have anything to d--
Des: Do...
Des: With....
Felix: -Gets a somewhat amused expression-
Des: . . .
Des: (The Highway--!)
Des: There...
Des: (So that image we got from the tunnel cameras in the highway--)
Des: (If what he's saying is right--)
Des: There's TWO Eights?
Felix: Mighty Nine Number Eight and Fighting Mighties Number Eight. The Teal Silence and the Teal Widow.
Felix: The latter is the lady of silence, the siren sniper.
Felix: …Though she does have quite a fondness for dairy.
Des: (...Dairy?)
Des: >> (This makes me wonder how much the CAL knows about this...)
Des: (The whole two of the same person deal...)
Des: ...Are there more?
Des: -Doubles, that is.-
Felix: Well, that whole family, yes.
Des: ....
[Des takes a moment to re-think it all over his head, crossing his arms and placing one hand on his face.]
Des: (Min, I REALLY wish you were right here right now--)
Felix: There’s more to it than that, though. The Fighting Mighty Numbers are benign forces. True, Kate got sick, but, well… if you know about her, you would have to had seen her. And if you saw her, then you saw him, too.
Felix: Yes, Jack helped rescue her. They’re both safe.
Felix: However.
Felix: It’s unlikely that he’ll be released to you any time soon, because they’ve been worried. They know that the rest of his team… “disappeared.” They don’t want any unsavory sources knowing his whereabouts or status.
Des: . . .
Des: (So that's what happened to Dencerjack.)
Des: (Mmm. No wonder we couldn't find him, he practically dropped off the face of this Earth.)
Felix: Including DWN-022.
Des: --Another DWN?
Des: (...22? Just how many are there--?)
Felix: Yes. Not all DWNs are tended to by Mikhail Cossack.
Felix: Most of them are dead. You know why already.
Des: ....
Felix: But there are some… DWN-022 specifically was rebuilt, but—Dr. Wily? He’s still active, Master Desmond.
Felix: As is Viper. He was scouting about where Jack was.
Des: !
Des: (But--)
Des: (All the way back in England?)
Felix: He’s after Cardinal, you know. And now that Cardinal has a close friend… going after them jointly is the way to cause the most pain.
Des: MN.8...
Des: (...Definitely need to bring this up with Min, this Viper character sounds...)
Des: (...He gives me VERY bad vibes for some reason--)
Felix: Exactly. This isn’t over yet. Cardinal has been a target for a while, ever since he pulled one over on Wily… twice.
Des: -Raises eyebrow- (Twice...)
Felix: Wily has never been one to share a spotlight, though. He’ll wait until this is over before he strikes. How long? I don’t know.
Felix: Cardinal will want to keep everyone out of it, but… the chances of that succeeding are… small.
[He sighs, putting a hand to his face.]
Felix: At least the Doctor and his daughter will be safe. They have powerful forces looking after them. But the Rebel Angels? Not so much.
Felix: But one crisis at a time, shall we? No use worrying over something beyond our scope that we know will not happen until this is over.
Des: ....
Des: -Right...-
[((Transition scene here, or not—as need be.))]
[Felix stood.]
Felix: Well then. I need to go speak with Dr. White, now that he’s back. There’s something important I need to ask him, anyway. May I leave?
Des: Er, yes, yes, of course--Thank you for your time...
Felix: Certainly.
[He took his leave.]
Des: ....
Des: -Phone, Phone, where's--
[CALLING: MINNIE MOUSE.]
Des: -Come on, Min, pick up--
[Click.]
“Hello, Ducky. Something up?”
Des: Something like that--
Des: >> I may have some news you might not like.
Des: ...Someone else might be looking for Dencerjack.
Des: Another DWN not in Dr. Cossack's care.
Minerva: …The snake?
Des: Bingo-- (...At this point I'm not surprised she knows by now--)
Des: Also learned that Jack's...well, flown the coup, so to speak.
Minerva: Oh? You know where he is?
Des: More or less.
Des: He's safe, and, well.
Des: ...You know those images we got from Highway Alpha?
Des: From the tunnel cameras?
Minerva: The ones we couldn’t decipher?
Des: I'm pretty sure by now someone in Tech managed to clean up those images.
Minerva: Well, I had the one intern—remember the report that the Pentagon submitted regarding Five’s rescue?
Minerva: About the lower level worker who worked with them, even when his superiors had hung up on the Whites?
Minerva: I set him on duty to tend to tech information that may pertain to the cases, for now…
Des: You might want to take a look at those...
Des: ...As well as launch some sort of investigation into CAL.
Minerva: I assume he is writing up a report, but—what’s this about investigating CAL?
Des: >> I think they know a little more than they're letting on.
Minerva: …
Minerva: -Dryly- They’re assassins and half of them are spies of some degree. Of course they know more than they say.
Des: -Exactly--
Des: >> Felix was kind enough to let me in on this, but...
Minerva: ? -Listening-
Des: ...Mngh, at this point, I feel... ugh.
Des: I feel useless here.
Des: The situation is in good hands, I know that--
Des: But I'm not exactly the one making the decisions here, and I think it's starting to get to me...
Minerva: -Soft sigh, but still listening-
Des: >> Haven't been in the field in a long time.
Des: ...Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky or something.
[She chuckles at that.]
Minerva: Oh, Donald. I understand the sentiment. It’s just part of being in these offices, when you lead such a large amount of people.
Des: ...How are things in your end?
Minerva: I’ve learned some very interesting things. And to that end…
Minerva: I’m going to come over.
[A beat.]
Minerva: As in, join you on the East Coast.
Des: --Wha--
Des: Min--the city is practically still Ground Zero--
Minerva: Mr. Desmond.
Minerva: I can’t go back to my House, that’s been utterly trashed, and needs to be checked for nuclear radiation.
Minerva: I certainly can’t go back to my home; that’s not secure, and doesn’t have proper resources.
Des: --...
Minerva: Right now, all of our leads are generated over there—whereas on Capitol Hill?
Minerva: The only thing being generated is more paperwork as it becomes more apparent that we will need a serious look into internal affairs.
Minerva: I don’t like how little DoHS has done to help matters. I don’t think your counterpart is involved, but “Something is rotten in the state of Denmark”, as the saying goes.
Minerva: Quite frankly, I need an office somewhere that is both technologically secure and has communication and computation resources. As of right now, that lab is the only place that I, personally, feel sure of—and I went through quite a long list of other safehouses before making that decision.
Minerva: The city itself may be dangerous, but let’s be real here—almost all major cities have been badly hit.
Des: ...Good point...
Minerva: Besides… what I’ve learned has completely convinced me that there is no way someone could steal information or otherwise effectively spy on the place.
Minerva: And that same thing also makes it very necessary for me to speak to Dr. White in person.
Des: -- Dr. White?
Minerva: Yes. Dr. William White.
Des: ....
Des: (That's...I thought our focus was on Dr. Cossack, why would Min want to suddenly talk to him?)
Des: (And directly, at that; if she just wanted him to be questioned, then she'd let me do it--)
Des: ....
Minerva: I believe I learned something about what happened during Battalion’s rescue, and I need to confirm the sequence of events with him.
Minerva: And also discuss his days as a fencing champion.
Des: ...Now you've lost me.
Des: What does THAT have to do with anything--?
Des: --The fencing, I mean--
Minerva: Oh, you’ll find out, Donald.
[Well that was ominous.]
Des: ....
Des: -Sighs- Alright...
Minerva: As for Dr. Cossack—
Minerva: He seems to be more forthcoming when speaking while he isn’t being recorded, anyway; and you’ve had to play bad cop, which has yielded minimal results. It sounds like you’ve learned more from Felix than Cossack himself, which is telling.
Minerva: Perhaps if I play good cop, we’ll learn something enlightening—
[SPLOOOSH--]
"WAKEY WAKEY EGGS AND BAKEY--"
Des: What the--
Des: -Hey wait a min--
[...There's...the sound of a lot of water over the phone--]
[Min had hung up, but—]
[The action had certainly not ended.]
[Having burst the door open with a jetstream of water, Cryo proceeded to rush over and spray Dr. Cossack in the face.]
Des: -Is now SOAKING wet--
Cryo: I said--
Cryo: WAKEY WAKEY EGGS AND BAKEY, UNCLE COSSACK--
[Mikhail was scrunching his eyes, swatting at his hair to try and get some of the water out. He, too, was soaking wet.]
Mikhail: -VERY much awake now- {What—}
[He was talking in Russian, presumably from being tired.]
Mikhail: {Cryosphere, why are you screaming about breakfast—}
[Cryosphere responded in English, though.]
[MN.2] //: -CUZ I'M HUNGRY AND EVERYONE IS KINDA GOING BONKERS RIGHT NOW-
Des: --???
Mikhail: {What?!}
[It only takes him one look at the status screens to make his decision. He looks alarmed.]
Mikhail: {Emergency shutdown! Authorization MC005!}
[There’s a flurry of status messages showing all the Robot Masters going Offline.]
[…Well.]
>ERROR: DLN-000 CANNOT BE SHUT DOWN WITHOUT DAMAGE TO SYSTEM.
>Internal Database ALERT: 06.30.20XX MEMORY DATA HAS GENERATED NEW PRIMAL ANALYSIS NEXUS: DATA CANNOT BE ISOLATED UNTIL UPDATE IS COMPLETED. ALL SHUT DOWN PROCEDURES MUST BE PERFORMED MANUALLY BY AN ADMIN.
<DLN-000 is still in Maintenance Mode.>
[…Almost all of them.]
Des: -What is--
Des: -It's just one thing after another, isn't it--
Mikhail: -Mumbles- {Now what is—}
[He stood, but quickly found he couldn’t move over toward the console. He wasn’t even able to reach it.]
Mikhail: …
Mikhail: -Tired- Mr. Desmond, I appreciate this less painful means of restraint, but— a harness, really?
Des: Don't look at me. <<
[Mikhail has already turned to look at the cord binding him to the floor. He had to squint rather hard, though.]
Mikhail: (Vines. Of course.) …So I can see, now. Apologies.
Mikhail: -Puts both hands to his face- I believe we need to obtain a status update at this point.
Mikhail: What’s your call? I’m not the one in charge in this range.
Des: -Turns- Cryosphere, where is your Father--
Cryo: -Back over there, you guys might wanna take a look, things are going cray cray--
[PING!]
[DR.WHITE] //: -Mikhail--
[DR.WHITE] //: -Mikhail if you can see this, Nico just went to the Prison after Soi and Call--
Mikhail: …!
Mikhail: He—
Mikhail: {Mother Mary help us, no wonder…}
Mikhail: Will. Will, we’ll be right over—
Mikhail: Hold on, we’ll come down to the lobby.
Mikhail: -Please-
Des: ....
Des: -Mngh-
Des: Alright, fine--
Des: -But I'm sticking close to you every step of the way--
Mikhail: I’d appreciate that, sir—
Mikhail: It seems the water has washed away my glasses, so I can’t see very well at the moment.
Cryo: -...Whoops-
Cryo: -UH, YOU GO SEE WHAT'S UP, ILL FIND THEM--
Mikhail: Alright, Cryo. Thank you.
Mikhail: Alright, Mr. Desmond, it’s your lead— though I’d appreciate it not being so obvious if you really do intend to use the cord as a lead.
Mikhail: You’ll also have to cut this free somehow, first.
Des: -I got this--
[...Oh, well, that's definitely a Military grade Swiss Army Knife.]
[Mikhail couldn’t see, but he could definitely hear, and he seemed a bit nervous at the sound. He took a slight step back, out of instinct.]
Des: -JUST going to cut this-
[Des moves to cut Mikhail free as quickly as possible--he seems practiced with it.]
Des: -Okay--
Des: That should do it.
[Probably the fact he couldn’t see very well helped in Mikhail not reacting much to it. And he did seem grateful at Desmond being right next to him—gave him a point of reference in moving around.]
[It wasn’t too long before they made their way down to the lobby. Felix and Will were both there.
Felix looked a little surprised to see them in their current state.]
Felix: You’re both soaking wet.
Des: =~= -Don't ask-
Will: Mikhail--
Will: -Oh thank goodness, sorry about the rude awakening--
Felix: Your glasses are missing.
Mikhail: Not important right now.
Mikhail: Where is Alnico? Is… is he really at the prison?
Will: He's--
Will: Yes, we--we couldn't stop him--
Will: -Oh Soi, please be alright--
[Mikhail groaned and pinched the bridge of his nose.]
Mikhail: So he found out about her at last, did he? (What a mess…)
Mikhail: Well, he’s Offline, now. Someone will have to go and get him, before he gets further injured.
Mikhail: I’ll—
Felix: No.
Des: ...
Felix: No you won’t, Doctor.
Will:
-Mikhail, please...-
Will: You still need rest--Soi is in there, let--
Des: Not you either, Doctor.
Will: ......
Will: (Soi...)
Felix: For one thing, I don’t recall Master Desmond releasing you, Mikhail.
Mikhail: —…
Des: Right.
Felix: And for another… now that you’re awake, if you insist on being awake and not taking more rest…
Felix: It should be to tend to some patients. Jaden sustained significant heat damage, and Carlos was injured by a fracture in time.
Felix: Now either go rest or go heal and THEN rest, because you aren’t leaving the building.
Des: As for you, Dr. White.
Will: --?
Des: You have an appointment.
Des: POTUS is coming here.
Will: -Wha--
Mikhail: …
Mikhail: What…?
Des: Gentlemen.
Des: Our White House is down.
Des: And all our info is coming from here, in Titus.
Des: Seeing as Sanda Labs is not only fortified, as well as having the technological equipment needed to function as a HQ...
Des: There is no where else President Morandi can go.
Mikhail: …I… suppose that makes sense, but—
Mikhail: What do you mean by “appointment"?
Des: >>
Des: ....
Des: I'm not so sure myself.
Des: But it has something to do with No. 5 and...
Des: ... your championship fencing days, Doctor.
Mikhail: ???
Mikhail: ({What does Bat have to do with fencing, I don’t get it—}) -Clearly confused-
Will: (Championship fenc--)
Will: --....
Will: -Pales-
Will: (Oh my God, no--NO--)
Will: (Sh-She can't have--!)
Mikhail: …Will?
Will: (Oooooodearlordno--)
Will: (No, this--can't be happening, not NOW--)
Will: ...... -Swallows-
Will: I...I see.
Des: (...Well THAT was CERTAINLY a reaction if I ever saw one.)
Mikhail: Will?
[He’s squinting pretty hard, because he can’t see at the moment.]
Will: (I didn't think...)
Will: (I thought...)
Will: I...
Will: -I need to sit down a f-for a bit...-
Des: (A VERY strong reaction.)
Will: (G-Greg--I can handle Greg--)
Will: (B-But her--s-she can do s-so much WORSE--)
Mikhail: Will, are you alright?
Will: (Oh, Mikhail, I'm so sorry--!)
Des: Doctor.
Will: --...
Des: She'll be coming over as soon as she can get a bird in the air.
Des: ...She'll also want a word with DLN-000 once he's recovered.
[Mikhail looks… VERY tired all of a sudden.]
Mikhail: Fully recovered? That could take up to a year.
Felix: —?!
Felix: A year?
Des: .....
Will: (Cardinal...)
Mikhail: …But— regarding Nico and Soi—
Felix: Appointment or not, Will was just in the midst of a very stressful fight, so no, he needs rest, too.
Felix: Master Desmond, may I go over to help them?
Felix: If your superior is coming here, you’ll be needed for a briefing, and you have people to look after. It seems that the staff there cannot help—and Nico is assuredly injured. I’m sure you remember from the Finals and the White House that Robot Masters do not bleed Xel, and if someone else were to notice this from Nico…
Will: ....
Des: ...You raise a good point.
Des: ...And I've... experienced what you can do...
Felix: Not all of it.
Felix: I can also escape fairly well. As soon as I find them, I will be able to leave from that spot, and then teleport here.
Des: -... Impressed.-
Des: ...Although... You're not a Xelbot either...
Will: We have false...transponders...
Felix: That should work, if it is acceptable. Although—would the readings be able to tell I’m organic?
Mikhail: You give off a lot of energy radiation. It… obscures that fact a bit.
Felix: -Raises an eyebrow- I was not aware you’d already measured that.
Mikhail: I didn’t have to measure, it’s actually observable.
Des: (...As in, entirely visible...?)
Des: .....
Des: ... Alright.
Des: You're cleared for entry to the Prison, Felix.
Des: I suggest that someone else prepare a room for POTUS once she arrives.
Will: (Erk--)
[Mikhail seemed to realize something.]
Mikhail: Oh—
Mikhail: Is she bringing Scout with her?
Will: --Scout--
Des: ...Right, the... -Ahem-
Des: I imagine so.
Des: >> I should have known he belongs to you all, really.
Mikhail: Oh? And why’s that?
[Felix had already made his way off. Man, can he move quietly when he wants to.]
Des: Well, he was with 000 during the White House raid...
Des: And he seemed to know Eight as well, in particular.
Des: >> ...That, and we learned that he isn't even...
Des: -We can't tell if he's some sort of dog or raccoon or both-
[Mikhail laughs at this.]
Mikhail: Well, I could tell you more later.
[He shakes his head, putting a hand to his face.]
Mikhail: I… can’t see right now, so I won’t be able to help with repairs. Unless you have instructions for me, Mr. Desmond… no matter where I end up, I’ll probably fall asleep again, so I might as well rest.
Will: -...what DID happen to your glasses--
Des: -Your daughter-
Will: --...Oh-
Will: -Can't help but grin- I'm sure she just got a bit excited.
Des: -Excited is underselling it- =~=
Mikhail: That sounds like her.
[He wrings his lab coat a bit.]
Mikhail: I do have my devices waterproofed, but I’m nevertheless thankful that they didn’t get drenched.
Mikhail: Alright then… might as well tell Pyro and Seven, I imagine they’ll make the best of the preparations.
[He seems… very tired again. Or rather… weary.
Almost defeated, in a sense.]
Mikhail: ({…Not much has changed…})
Mikhail: ({Still so much… to [color=black]answer[/color] for.})
Will: (...Mikhail...)

FIGHT! Bonfire Vs Ray!
Intro Quote(Versus): [Bonfire reeled from the horrendous scream. As he gritted his teeth in pain and looked up into the looming shadow that glinted with many serrated fangs, he was slammed with a cross-reference—something his sister had said to them the night they learned the truth of what happened….] || “-Teeth. So many teeth. In the dreams, always the teeth. The teeth and the screes. So many teeth. Did we mention teeth?-” || [The shock was stunning, but the severity of the situation kickstarted a different instinct. He burst into WHITE-HOT FLAMES OF PURE RAGE.]
Taunt: BURN, YOU INSUFFERABLE WITCH!
Special Attack: ((No dialogue, just an angry shout with a wicked right hook!))
Ultimate Attack: [The power that he put behind the explosion was more than just pushing himself to the limit. This high-tier Burning Spirit was fueled with a roaring rampage of revenge—revenge for all that they had suffered, for all the pain and madness and sorrow. But most of all, for that night—for THAT NIGHT, the night that his sister had been brought back, SCREAMING in agony as she fell to pieces…]
Win Quote(Versus): What the hell—?! || [Out of ALL the things to happen, he had NOT expected her to suddenly start DISSOLVING like that…!]
Lose Quote(Versus): [He huffed, shaking in pain and injury from the numerous, heavy wounds. || Try as he might, he couldn’t contact anyone. There would be no escape…] || D…Damn you…!
===================
Intro Quote(Team Up): [The leader of the Fighting Mighties flared up in anger. He was not pleased to have landed himself in this situation, but this was hardly the time or place to confront the past when they had a BIGGER problem on their hands…]
Assist: No further! ((Directed at opponent(s), not Ray))
Ultimate Team Attack: Taste the fires of Hell! ((Referring far more to Ray’s fire than his own, but still.))
Win Quote(Team Up): Hmph. I’m calling in the chaos spheres and the ice child before this inferno rages out of control.
Lose Quote(Team Up): This is out of our control—!
Knock Out Quote(Team Up Self): [He staggered down to one knee, trying desperately to stay conscious. He didn’t trust his combat so-called “partner”, even though…] || Ghh… gnnnn… || [He couldn’t take it. He was worn down beyond his limits.] || : >F-Father…! ||
Knock Out Quote(Team Up Partner): [Bonfire was seized with a sudden cold fear. This was not a choice he wanted to make. He didn’t want to have to even think of choosing. Especially not when his own sister and her Other had orders to carry out, and they would all pay the price for obstruction. || For the first time ever, he found himself desperately HOPING that he would lose, so that he wouldn’t have to MAKE that decision…]

{Meanwhile, at the Rebel Angel residence…}
[Siam was starting to feel very tired.]
>RUNNING ANALYSIS…
[He was with himself right now, running the seemingly endless tests. It was just one more thing on top of everything else that had happened.
He spoke aloud.]
Gemini: First Cardinal nearly gets into a fight with an assassin.
[He continued the train of thought out of habit, speaking in unison.]
Siamini: Then he nearly flings himself at a lethal battle when Shade leaves, because he’s depressed.
[He continued on, letting himself handle the mainframe for a while.]
Siam: As if that weren’t bad enough… the Finals were an utter disaster.
Gemini: -Grumbles, not looking up from work- If he hadn’t been torn less, he could have died.
Siam: Not to mention the attention that got from the media…
Siamini: -Sighs-
Siam: -Tossing a ball and catching it- (And then Felix got ill, which in and of itself is telling for the disaster.)
Gemini: (He must have seen what was coming.)
Siamini: (And since then, things have just gone downhill…)
[He spoke up in objection to this.]
Gemini: Well, to be fair— Beck has managed to restore contact, and rescue the others in a way we never would have seen before.
Siam: -Scowls- That may be the case, but that didn’t stop Tobias from getting shattered, nor Shadow from going rogue. We never should have gone Offline…
Gemini: We made the decision based on what we knew. How were we supposed to know he had those kinds of powers?
Siam: We could have guessed! Besides, it was a bad idea to leave him unsupervised while Brand’s battle was going on.
Gemini: Well, I thought the Meadow barrier would have kept him safe…
[He sighed.]
Gemini: We really should focus more on the bright side. This isn’t another Monstropolis. The others are getting rescued. It’s not going to be a bleak end to a free world, like we had thought.
[Siam leaned back to look up at the ceiling.]
Siam: That may be the case, but this is far from over. Tobias still has to be kept Offline, so that he stays out of the way. There are at least five people still in recovery at any given time, and the others still have to be rescued.
[He gave a nasty glare and flung the bouncy ball at the ceiling, catching it deftly (without even looking!) in his hand.]
Siam: Every time one of us has interfered, there’s been trouble. Tobias got shattered, Shadow nearly jumped off a careening truck, and Cardinal’s foolishness has undone months of research.
PING.
[There was silence. Siam rolled his eyes.]
>ANALYSIS COMPLETE
[Months without progress, and he’d gotten tired of hearing the sound. They’d been back at it (without success) for days, and—]
>RESULTS: POSITIVE.
Siamini: …
Siamini: ?!?!
[He scrambled over to the database mainframe, both of him working at once. He was reviewing the details, printing out the results, he’d have to run a re-test—]
Gemini: (We HAVE to get the others over here!)
Siamini: (NOW!!)
[He didn’t yet dare to hope, couldn’t dare to dream—]
((…Apparently I wanted to put a pic here, but I honestly don’t remember why))
[This couldn’t be a false positive, they needed this now.
He needed to be RIGHT.]
[Back in the Meadow’s lab, things were also busy. Carmen’s father had come over to help oversee the repairs of the Xelbots in recovery—and he sure had his hands full.
Thankfully, the main problem just seemed to be weariness and memory loss, which was rather typical both of the recovery process and time warps in general.
Fighting Mighty Eight had started to recover much more rapidly after being looked to by her own Doctor, though remained more or less exclusively in Sleep mode. Based on the readings, she seemed to be having troubled dreams.
Sometimes she would “wake” abruptly, in a confused state, only to return to rest once she was anchored in where and when she was.
…
…Tonight was one such night.]
<FMN-008 is now Online.>
Carmen: -Snaps “awake” with a drowsy start- ?
Carmen: (Where—what happened, where is he—)
Carmen: (Was it a dream? What is real, what happened—)
[She stumbled out of bed, but before she got too far—]
-Zzt.-
Carmen: Ow!
[There was a somewhat fashionable looking bracelet band around her upper arm that crackled with electricity. She stumbled back toward the bed, and it stopped.
This made her more awake, but did not improve her mood.]
Carmen: … (Why the /hell/ am I /shock shackled/— aaaugh, dammit—) -Fusses with the band awkwardly, as it’s on the same arm as her only hand-
"....?"
[Jack looked up from his book--something that he found lying around the lab, looked to be the Xel kid's--at the moderate sounds coming from room next door.]
Jack: ...Uh oh...
[Putting the book down, he slowly rolled off the bed--he was in no condition to be doing anything strenuous, but at least he was allowed to move around so long as he didn't leave the repair bay.]
Jack: (Miss Eight must be sleepwalking again or something...)
[The data seemed to confirm that. It was hazy and distant, but with concrete substance to it.]
[There was suddenly a… pulse, almost, rather than a ping—it would have been a blast of data, if there had been any real energy behind it.]
<FMN-008 to MNN-ALL, FMN-ALL, CDN-7037>: > -STATUS INQUIRY?-
Carmen: (Was it real—was all of it real, did I really—)
<FMN-008>: > -Jack?? Brand??? AVI?-
[A few soft pings.]
<FMN-007>: >Everyone is fine, Shade.
<FMN-001>: >Go back to sleep.
<FMN-006>: > —
<FMN-007>: > -Puts a hand over Avi’s mouth, no puns right now, please-
[Carmen felt so dazed.]
<FMN-008>: >But— but everything was so hot, Brand was so angry— so many— dark, dark alleys, rain—
<FMN-008>: > -What happened to them, was it real, what did I do?-

[CDN.7037 to MN.7] //: Pretty much, Seven. She's out of it...

<FMN-008>: > -I’m shock-shackled, what did I do, Brand-

[MN.7] //: -Soothing, calm data, you did nothing wrong, it's going to be alright, we promise.-
Jack: (...What...?)
Jack: (What's she talking about, this...this isn't like the last times she was up...)
<FMN-007>: > -Sleep, you need to sleep, you are not awake, so perhaps one could say this IS a dream-
<FMN-006>: > … -Are we being philosophical here, because I don’t want her trying to test out “dream powers” by trying to fly, dude—-
<FMN-006>: > -THOUGH IF THIS IS A DR—gak!-
<FMN-001>: >No shouting. Go back to sleep, Eight.
<FMN-008>: > But—but Brand— Bonnie—they were dead, I think they were dead—
<FMN-007>: > You’re having a bad dream. Rest. Dream of food and singing and dancing.
[This seemed to be working, based on the more subdued data and rustle noises as she retreated back to her sleeping place on the repair bed.]
<FMN-008>: > -It was dark and cold, rain, rainwater…-
<FMN-007>: > Shhhh…
<FMN-008>: > -Didn’t want… so many… walking away, not threats ‘no more…-
<FMN-008>: > -It wanted to hear them beg and see them scream-

<DWN-024>: > I could ask much the same of you-- we had to leave so abruptly, is everything safe again?

[MN.6] //: Yeah, Shads, we're OK, really. Just--just lemmie talk, alright?
[MN.6] //: So, after you guys skedaddled after the higher ups called--they, uh, basically told us where Bat was.
[MN.7] //: ...and?
[MN.6] //: Aaaand well, he was in Nevada.

[MN.6 to MN.7] //: This is the last thing they need right now--especially Doc Cossack.
<DWN-024>: > ... This is something where we would have to be read in, I am guessing, if the military contacted you directly regarding their property.
<DWN-024>: > Do not trouble yourselves with that at this time.
<DWN-024>: > We do not wish to draw so much attention to ourselves, nor do we wish you to get court marshaled for disclosing sensitive information.
<DWN-024>: > Are they still bothering you?
[MN.6] //: Uh...well, we still gotta get debriefed and all. Does that count?
[MN.7] //: . . . .
[MN.6] //: They, uh, also wanna talk with Dad--about the virus, I'm guessing, since he's the one heading up the analysis on that...

[MN.6] //: They're gonna try and help us from now on, at least! We basically got a guarantee on that. Well, 90% chance, I think...

[MN.6] //: Hmm-mmm.
[MN.6] //: Pretty sure.
[MN.6] //: So...things are gonna be OK.

<DWN-024>: > I think, for now, it may be best for you all to rest and be brought up to speed on the goings-on within your own line.
[MN.6] //: Good plan, good plan...
[MN.7] //: ...Agreed.

<DWN-013>: >I do understand.
<DWN-013>: >Really.
-*-*-*-*-*-*-
I looked at my arms. My bomb launcher was loaded and ready to fight. I had everything I needed to bring him down.
I just had to make sure he didn’t.
The wall was thrown down by cannon fire and MegaMan came stumbling in, an angry look on his face. I stopped pacing.
[font color="Orange"][font size="3"][tt]Beginning Stage III… Now.
Destruction sequence activated.[/tt][/font][/font]
[i]No…! Not yet![/i]
I paced back and forth, trying to override the program. The kid staggered to his feet, staring at me as I turned my back.
[i]Come on, kid… make it quick…[/i]
“You… you’re Crashman, right?”
I turned to face him with a frown.
[font color="Orange"][font size="3"][tt]Target in sight. Destroy.[/tt][/font][/font]
I struggled against the program. [i]I was made to fight a heartless mechanic monstrosity, not a boy. I will not fire until he does,[/i] I pleaded.
“Yeah,” I responded, my voice strained. “Hello… older brother.”
His eyes widened as he put a hand to his arm cannon. “Wh-what?!”
“Please… MegaMan? I don’t… I don’t have time to explain.”
“You… you’re playing some kind of mind game! Well… it… it isn’t funny!”
“Blast it boy, [i]LISTEN[/i] to me!” I snapped. “I…I can’t fight this much longer. You have to… have to win.”
“…You…”
“I’m sorry… bro… it should never have been this way. You… you have to start it. And you have to end it.” I glanced back at him as I turned to walk away in my pacing. “The first shot is yours… go ahead. Run the program. Just… just promise me… that you’ll bring that Wily down.”
-*-*-*-*-*-*-
<DWN-013>: > … I do.
[MN.5] //: .....
[MN.5] //: ...Copy that, soldier.
[MN.5] //: ...I just wish it didn't have to be this way.
[MN.5] //: ...one hell of a mess to clean up...
<DWN-013>: > -Sighs- Yeah, that’s for sure. Honestly, I’m glad you’re doing as well as you are—Fighting Eight is still way out of it.
[MN.5] //: (...So her too, hmm...)
[Jaden seems… broody.]
<DWN-013>: > …We feel kinda bad because it feels like we’ve made things worse along the way.
<DWN-013>: > Not sure how much you’ve been told of what’s happened so far…
[MN.5] //: .....
[MN.5] //: Not much, no.
[MN.5] //: Been put to repair and bed rest since retrieval.
<DWN-013>: >That makes sense. You took quite a beating.
<DWN-013>: >We’re going to have a meeting later.
<DWN-013>: > We’ve got some good news to share, so. Take heart in that.
[MN.5] //: Now that's real good to hear. Should help the morale.
[MN.5] //: ...Private Beck's going to need it, for certain.
<DWN-013>: > …Yeah. Well, call us when you guys are rested up, okay?
<DWN-013>: > …Though you, uh. May want to talk to Pyro, first, to get some context.
Jaden: (Better him than me to explain just how much a mess my family’s made… ooooog…)
{Later…}
Bonnie: How’s Five doing?
Pyro: Still resting, but...I think he spoke with Jaden a while ago, and it seemed to have helped.
Pyro: As for Beck, he's still in Sleep Mode...
Bonnie: I’m not surprised. From what I can make out of the cross-references, it was a very trying experience.
Bonnie: Any sign of the three still missing?
Pyro: .....
Pyro: Still nothing on Shade--and we don't even HAVE a transponder signal coming from Mic...
Pyro: -Rumbly grumpy data-
Pyro: ...And Cardinal...well. I don't really have to say at this point, do I.
Bonnie: -Sighs and covers his face with a hand, folding the other under his arm- Then I hope whatever Dr. Cossack has to say regarding “good news” involves his whereabouts.
Bonnie: He WAS going over some of 000’s recent activity…
Bonnie: Unless I’m mistaken, I believe the Cossacks were able to trace the source.
Pyro: !
Pyro: I certainly hope you're not, then...
Pyro: (...But I doubt he would stay in one location for too long. He's too smart for that.)
Pyro: (Mmn...tracking those two is like trying to follow footprints in a blizzard...)
Pyro: (...But, at least we know he's still out there...)

<MC005>: >I was given quite the scare, that’s for certain. But a good deal of time has passed over here since then, and it’s given me a chance to settle down.
[DR.WHITE] //: Whew...
[DR.WHITE] //: I'm glad--things were a bit...chaotic, to say the very least...but we got through it together, and Bat has returned to us.
[DR.WHITE] //: Not only that, but along with one more piece to solving this virus code.
[DR.WHITE] //: (I'm close, I can feel it, I just need time...)
[DR.WHITE] //: How are the others...?
<MC005>: >Well, Jack was rather confused when he woke up somewhere else again— and Tetra had a rather… interesting choice of words to explain it—but he’s been a good patient. Most everyone has been rather docile. Jaden was agitated for a while, but improved after getting the chance to speak with Bat.
<MC005>: > … Fighting Eight still hasn’t fully recovered.
[DR.WHITE] //: (Oh, no...Carmen...)
<MC005>: >I don’t entirely understand… this kind of damage surely must happen from time to time in the arena, but it seems this is the first time it’s affected her memory so deeply. Either she hasn’t ever had a head injury that severe before, or the head trauma just made existing problems worse, or there’s something else about it that I don’t know.
<MC005>: > She remains more or less docile, and can usually be coaxed back into Sleep mode within two minutes of her panicked episodes.
<MC005>: >She’s been rather incoherent. I think she just needs rest. Lots and lots of rest.
<MC005>: > The boys have been mercifully cooperative, especially ever since the latest development.
<MC005>: >That’s something you and I definitely need to cover—though there are other things to discuss that I think everyone should hear.
<MC005>: >We have good news and… some very important findings.
<MC005>: > We really should hold a conference call as soon as possible. Though you should probably get Five and Seven back up to speed, first.
[DR.WHITE] //: !
[DR.WHITE] //: I see--we'll have to wait until Beck awakens, however--I'm afraid he hasn't woken up since.
[DR WHITE] //: It's...a bit concerning, but he's showing no signs of negative data...so...as long as he gets as much rest as possible...
<MC005>: >Mmm… well, for the good news, I’m sure he’d appreciate being there with everyone else…. I’m not sure about the findings, however…
<MC005>: > I think Pyro, Bat, and Brand definitely should hear it, though.
[There’s a thoughtful silence.]
<MC005>: > Are there any sign of the other three on your end?

<MC005>: >And I do have news of Cardinal.
Mikhail: (Though definitely not the news anyone was hoping to hear.)
Will: (Perhaps we're almost through this crisis--wait...just news?)
[DR.WHITE] //: --...and it's...it's good news? -yes, we are trying to be hopeful here-
<MC005>: > …Er…
<MC005>: > …That depends on how you take it?
<MC005>: >He’s definitely in one piece, and seems to be at his full strength—at least, at the time he was last spotted.
[DR.WHITE] //: (Still alive--while I am worried about you, Cardinal...I have to admit I am impressed you've--)
<MC005>: >But as for Four—
<MC005>: >My dear Will.
<MC005>: >You DO remember that my oldest (currently Online, David aside) son is a miner, da?
[DR.WHITE] //: --!
[DR.WHITE] //: Of course, maybe can he can give us an idea where Mic might have gone...
[DR.WHITE] //: Definitely somewhere in his 'element', to be sure--although we already scanned his mine, and found nothing...
[DR.WHITE] //: Mmmn...
<MC005>: >Digger has a few other ideas, and he’s turning his analysis to them now that we’ve finished our analysis of Cardinal’s information.
<MC005>: >He agrees at it’s likely that Seismic has headed underground. Quite frankly, there is no other way that he would be in his element while also being out of sight unless that were the case. He’s too large to go unnoticed above the scene.
<MC005>: >You will have to be prepared to accept his authority, though.
[DR.WHITE] //: ...I expected as much...
<MC005>: >I’m sorry, but it’s just…
<MC005>: >Dealing with infected constructs is one thing. Battling nature is another. And going underground is something else entirely.
<MC005>: >It’s very easy to get lost, and if you get lost without a surface team to keep track of you, you could spend days trying to find your way out.
<MC005>: >Thankfully, Three is an Industrial by nature, so he won’t try to get involved in any combat. You don’t need to worry on that front.
<MC005>: >He has extensive experience with that field—it’s his area of expertise—so he will be in charge of the monitoring surface team, and the recovery team, should it come to that. He’s already assigned Jaden as his second, though he’s still debating on who should be his partner…

((Bat and Pyro convo goes here))
[Later that afternoon, Mikhail briefly stopped by Sanda Labs to pick up a few things that had been left in their hasty retreat. Before he returned to the Meadow, though, he had an important stop to make.
He made his way up to Beck’s room with a bag of marshmallows in hand.]
[...There's no sound coming from his room, and the lights seem to be off...]
[Inside, a soft white glow can be seen under the covers--and the small bump that was Beck there as well.]
Beck: --? (Dad--?)
[A head pops up, and tired emerald eyes blink in slight confusion when the figure at the foot of his bed was not his Father.]
Beck: Dr. Cossack...?
Mikhail: -Softly- Good afternoon, Number Nine.
Mikhail: -Offers marshmallow bag-
Beck: ...um.
[...He can't help but feel a bit meek while taking a few marshmallows. He couldn't guess why Dr. Cossack was here, but...]
[...This had to be about Jaden's Capsule, right?]
Beck: .....
Beck: (Maybe I should...give the data back...)
Mikhail: Trouble resting?
Beck: ....Um...
[He rubs the back of his head a bit.]
Beck: Kinda. It's been a long week...it's sorta throwing my whole sleep schedule off...
[...Well, that was true, in part. Lately, he still felt tired even after going into Sleep Mode...]
[ ...There were just too many thoughts in his head.]
[Too many worries.]
Mikhail: It has been a long week, hasn’t it. And the time warps in effect can be a headache, true.
Mikhail: It helps to have someone to talk to about it.
Beck: .....
[...Oh.]
Beck: Y...Yeah, those are always weird...
Beck: .....
Beck: ....Doctor Cossack?
Mikhail: Da?
Beck: Are...
Beck: ......
Beck: Are they afraid of me?
Mikhail: -Blinks at this-
[As was his custom, he waited until he was sure Beck had had his say before he said anything himself.]
Beck: I...Nico was...really angry--and Shadow...
Beck: I...I didn't mean...
Beck: .....
[...He falls silent.]
[There is some rattling in his closet a second afterwards...]
[Mikhail reaches out and gently puts a hand on Beck’s head.]
Beck: ....
Beck: I...I'm sorry I got Jaden in trouble....
Beck: I...I just...
Beck: ....
[Mikhail gave a soft sigh and pulled Beck into a hug.]
Beck: ......

"...What does that mean--"
"...It means don't be surprised if everyone starts to FEAR YOU, you idiot." _______________
Beck: --I...I don't want them to be afraid of me...
Beck: I'm not like...I don't want to...
Beck: -They're family too, I don't want to let them down or--or fail them or scare them or...-
Mikhail: Shhhh…
Beck: .....
Beck: (What if they're right?)
Beck: (I barely understand what's going on with me, and Dad...I'm not even sure if HE knows too...)
Beck: (Was this what she was talking about...?)
Beck: -We're scared.-
[Beck just curls up with the Russian Doctor, hands clutching the blankets, trying to even out his breathing.]
Beck: -I don't wanna be like the Menace...-
Mikhail: Oh, my dear soul-son…. -Soft sigh again-
Mikhail: You are very dear to all of us. Remember first that in our hearts, you are beloved, and cherished like Tobias, Kalinka, and David.
Mikhail: You are not the one that they fear, Amadeus. What they fear is the loss of control.
[He pulls back so he can lean his forehead against Beck’s.]
Mikhail: Not you losing control of yourself, but the situation growing greater than they can handle. It is already out of their hands. This is hard for them to accept, for it brings them back to our days at home where we live in hiding and in fear.
Mikhail: That is why they have grown defensive. They see themselves in a hostile world, where their family could be turned against itself unto ruin.
Mikhail: They are afraid that some other force will take such an ability from you to use against them—whether that force hunt you down for it, or simply take advantage of what is at hand.
Beck: .......
Beck: (I...gosh, I know that feeling...)
Beck: -Nods-
Mikhail: They have not spoken much of their culture to your family, partially because it is one of sorrow and suffering, with a serious, melancholic, reflective atmosphere. But now that Aviator knows the full extent, they may open up more over time.
Mikhail: The Power Capsules are culturally very important, not just physically. That Jaden allowed you to interact with his shows how much he trusts you.
Beck: ....He...he does...?
Beck: .....
Beck: (Jaden, you...)
Beck: .....
Mikhail: He would not have let you even see it if he did not, Nine. He was obviously hoping to give you his form—likely because of how sturdy it is. Such a thing is very important to them, and not done lightly.
Mikhail: Alnico was alarmed primarily because… well, to put it frankly, he’s been wound a bit too tight during the whole ordeal. Being the family leader is not easy, and it was never a position he really wanted to begin with.
Mikhail: When feeling stressed and afraid, it is easier and more likely for faulty alarm triggers to go off.
Beck: ...O...Oh...
Beck: (Poor Nico...he must be really stressed out and stuff...)
Beck: ......No wonder he got so mad...
Mikhail: He in particular has had a very bad experience regarding the Power Capsules. His half-brother took his brother’s Power Capsule from storage for the sole purpose of destroying him.
Mikhail: He, like most of the family, feel that the fewer people that have access to such things, the safer things will be.
Beck: .....That makes sense when you look at it like that... (...They ARE weapons....)
Beck: (...I guess Nico had a point. I SHOULD be more careful...)
Mikhail: You did no real harm to them, though. Nico has calmed down considerably, now that they are confident that all will be well in the end.
Mikhail: They really do believe that.
Beck: ......
Beck: (They....they really do believe that I'll fix everything...)
Beck: (I don't...I can't let them down like that...)
Beck: Yeah...I...I know.
Mikhail: They know that with the public not giving into panic, things can be fixed, with effort, even if it takes quite a lot of it over an extended period of time.
Mikhail: For them, that is everything—to be allowed that chance.
Mikhail: I know you can do it. I knew it when you first said you would, when I saw the look in your eyes.
Mikhail: I’d seen that look before, you know.
Beck: ....B...Before...?
Mikhail: Yes. Right down to the green eyes. | )
((Cardinal pic))
Mikhail: Cardinal gets that when he becomes determined. He was that way when it came to saving my family.
Beck: ...!
Beck: (The Russian Incident...)
Beck: .....
Beck: .....I...I miss him.
Beck: ...I know he's trying to save Shade...and I don't blame him at all, but...
Beck: ...I could use his advice too...
Mikhail: Yes…?
Beck: ...He's just...ya know, he's done everything?
Beck: ...Though I bet he'd just insist on going with me to save everyone or something...
Beck: If...if he was still here, that is...
Mikhail: -Chuckles softly- Even if he did not come in person, you could probably have expected a great deal of backseat driving from him in the form of continuous witty and sardonic commentary.
Beck: Heheheh...
[That gets him to smile at last--he could practically hear him commenting on those weird wheel-like CDNs and Graham's backfired blame game...]
Beck: Cards is funny like that...heh...
Mikhail: Ah… but Cardinal is made for this sort of thing; it is quite literally as close to what he was built for as anything can get. So… if he had not left, he would have joined you… or had to shut down for the duration, as the only options for such a directive are to obey or stall.
Beck: ....
Beck: -Sighs-
Beck: I'm worried...
Beck: ...He can't cure Shade like I can--he knows that by now, doesn't he? -And I don't know what Shade will do or if he'll even...-
Beck: ......I just hope we find one of them soon...
[Cossack was silent for a moment, his demeanor turning a thoughtful kind of serious. When he spoke, it was as if saying something that had already been mourned and passed over, healed with time.]
Mikhail: …Beck… there’s something you should know.
Mikhail: And this is something I will tell the others as well, very soon. As soon as everyone is well enough to attend the meeting… you included.
Beck: ...?
Mikhail: Shade and Cardinal once discussed what to do if something ever happened that made Shade go mad.
Beck: --??
Beck: They did?
Beck: (But how would they...)
Mikhail: Shade warned him to stay away, but acknowledged Cardinal’s honest response that he would do no such thing.
Mikhail: He ultimately told him that if all else failed, to save his Central core.
Beck: ....!
Beck: (His...his core...)
Mikhail: Cardinal will attempt to bring your brother back, willingly or not.
Beck: . . . .
Beck: Shade...
Mikhail: You must understand…
Mikhail: For Cardinal, this was yet another round, another generation, another lifetime which he must see those close to him suffer and be destroyed. He has put a great deal of effort in our world into halting and then reversing this tide.
Mikhail: He was not about to let it happen here.
Mikhail: He feared that if Shade were not stopped, that the use of force against him would be so great as to destroy him entirely.
Mikhail: He would prevent that from happening, even if it meant fighting Shade himself to do so.
Beck: .......
Mikhail: … (Even if it meant…) …
Mikhail: …
Mikhail: …He does not expect to cure. He just seeks to bring him back to those who can.
Beck: ...U...Us....
Beck: (Cardinal...)
Beck: (You really care about him, don't you...)
Beck: ......
Beck: ...Shade would've done the same thing...
Beck: ....It's...just who they are, right...
Beck: ....
Mikhail: Yes.
Mikhail: (Though for some reason, I get an odd sense of deja vu when it’s mentioned Shade will do the sa—… wait… /will/?)
Mikhail: (…I’m not going to think on that, probably just another one of their misadventures…)
Mikhail: And Beck…
Mikhail: Even with all that, I don’t think he would have left it up to you if he did not feel you could handle it.
Mikhail: Take heart, my friend. And… do talk to us once in a while, alright?
Mikhail: I know you’ve been unhappy and nervous. You kept avoiding people, just like your father has been doing.
Mikhail: But we’re here for you, Beck White. Kalinka very much enjoys talking with you. And if you seek advice on what Cardinal might do or say…
Mikhail: She traveled across a continent or two with him, you know. She’s pretty familiar with his mannerisms—more than some of his brothers, even.
Beck: (...That's right...Linka....)
Beck: ...I'll...I'll keep that in mind, Dr. Cossack...
Beck: ....T...Thanks.
Beck: ......
Beck: Dad's probably worried about everything too.
Beck: -We're similar like that-
Mikhail: I know. (…I wish I could be more helpful.)
Beck: I know Dad's been working so hard on cracking the virus...
Beck: (...He must feel like everyone's counting on him too...)
[Mikhail sighed.]
Mikhail: …I wish there were more I could do to help him. (Because this still isn’t over…)
Mikhail: (We have a lot of work to do.)

[REBOOTING…]
[MN.9 IS NOW ONLINE]
Beck: ….Uuugh…
Beck: What…what happened…
[……]
[At first…nothing.]
[Then….]
“PYRO! BRAND! SHADE! GUYS! S T O P!!”
Beck: ……!!!!!
[MN.9 to MN.1-8] //: GUYS! GUYS!
[MN.9 HAS BEEN BLOCKED BY MN.1-8.]
[MN.9] //: …??!?!
Beck: What…?!
Beck: Why would… They…
[…And that is when he noticed where he was. No longer was he within the Colosseum walls; he was now on some rooftop by a NBCA advertisement. It looked like he was simply DROPPED here, but the means of how and why were far from his mind.
At the sounds of the explosions, Mighty No. 9 ran across the rooftop…]
Beck: !!!
Beck: N-No!
[Screams. Fire.]
Beck: What—
[The whole of the city in absolute chaos: citizens screaming in terror, fleeing from literal hordes of rampaging robots, leaving nothing but destruction in their wake.]
Beck: What is happening?!
Beck: …!!!
Beck: DAD!
[His creator. His father. Doctor William Apollo White. He was somewhere in this madness…
Without another thought, Beck jumped down from the rooftop. He had to find him. He had to know if…!]
Beck: PROFESSOR! DAD! WHERE ARE YOU?!
Beck: DAAAAD!!
[… …
… … …
… … … …
…!! There! In the distance—! That puff of hair that could only be—!]
Beck: Dad!
Will: Beck!
[The sheer relief couldn’t have been any clearer on their faces as Beck ran up to his father, who seemed to have had better days; his lab coat was torn here and there, and his face was covered in black soot.]
Will: Ah, Beck—thank God—and functioning normally, it would appear!
Beck: Yeah…yeah, I’m fine, Dad. I’m fine…
Beck: I am so glad you’re OK—
[Beck clutched his father's leg as hard as he could, and Will bent down to give his youngest perhaps the tightest hug he could muster.]
Will: Good Lord; what on earth has happened? It’s chaos, everywhere!
Beck: I… I dunno. I dunno, Dad…
[Tears filled his emerald green eyes.]
Beck: I… I can’t contact the others; Pyro, Cryo, Dyna…! They… they blocked me!
Will: What?!
Will: Why on—…
Will: …
Will: ohhhhh God—nononoNO—
[He fumbled with his bag. He clumsily pulled out his laptop and opened it as quickly as he could, and—]
Will: Gah, it’s DEAD—!
[He forgot, he didn’t charge it on the way back to America—]
Beck: —!!!
Beck: INCOMING!
[Several airborne delivery bots had spotted them—and their load was less than helpful. They were carrying explosives.
Beck pushes his father out of the way with a strength he never knew his default form possessed.]
Will: ooF–
[The blast knocked both father and son back some ways, but Beck’s quick actions had saved them both from sustaining serious damage.
Thankfully, the trio of delivery bots had no more cargo to dispel, and flew back the way they came—probably to get more of their ammo.]
Will: Ngh…
Beck: Dad—Dad, are you OK?!
Will: Y-Yes, mostly…
Beck: Dad—Dad, it’s not safe—
Will: I’m alright, Beck, really. Just give me a second…
[Beck looked forward.]
Beck: (This street almost seems… familiar, somehow…)
[…! Wait! He knew where he was! Just a few blocks from here was home!]
Beck: -Ping- Look!
Will: …
[After catching his breath, he stood, brushed himself off, and looked to the distance where Beck was pointing. There, on end of this long street…
Sanda Enterprises.]
Will: … …
[He was silent.]
Beck: Dad…?
[Dr. William White's expression hardened.
His sons, his daughters…
What was happening to all the robots…
…He couldn’t do anything from here.]
Will: -Starts closing up the laptop after setting up the short-range frequencies to run via private hardware rather than the public towers- We won’t figure out anything from here, Beck.
Will: We must make for the laboratory–and quickly!
Beck: …!
[But between them and home?]
((Pic—Will and Beck overlooking streets of chaos))
[Was little less than a war zone.]
Will: Beck…
Will: I can’t get through this by myself.
Will: You MUST forge on ahead and clear a secure path.
Beck: —!? Wha—
Will: Don’t worry—I’ll follow, and monitor your process. We only need to make it to the end of this street!
Will: Do you think you can do that?
Beck: … …
[He’s walked down this street countless times—he’s just never had to do it amidst gunfire—not even in a simulation! In all honesty, it was extremely frightening; he wished he had his siblings here now, more than ever. This wasn't something he had trained for, let alone something that he'd been built with in mind!
But his father…
His family… Dr. Sanda… Call…! They all needed him!]
[MN.9 HAS ENTERED COMBAT MODE.]
Beck: Yes sir!
[…Seeing that smile on his face, and the will that clearly shone beneath those eyes…]
Will: Alright…
[…There was hope.
They could not lose that—not now!]
Will: Let’s move!
[OBJECTIVE: ESCORT DR. WHITE TO SANDA ENTERPRISES UNHARMED.]
[SYSTEMS READY.]
[INITIATING COMBAT PROGRAMS….]
[Getting through the overturned vehicles and debris was easy enough, and provided good cover for the young Doctor. But it wasn’t long before Beck got a rather harsh welcome party…]
Beck: —!!
[There was a bright flash of purple, and a standard CherryDyn Security Model robot materialized in his path. After spotting him, it began waving its arms around wildly; its weapon made a priming noise, clearly getting ready to fire.]
Beck: Gah!
[He ducked behind a bit of debris, causing the lock-on to disengage.
Dr. White’s voice filled his comm link—as long as they were near each other, they could speak above the chaotic noises that filled the blue sky.]
[DR.WHITE] //: A security bot—and it’s out of control, like all the others…
[MN.9] //: Y-yeah—! Stay back, I'll—!
[The CherryDyn bot, however, didn’t notice Will at all—rather, it moved on ahead. Beck fell back closer to his father, still tense and ready to fight.]
Beck: Are you okay?!
Will: I'm fine.
Beck: (Where did it go…?)
[He looked around nervously. He didn't fancy being ambushed at a time like this!]
Beck: …!!
Beck: Professor! Look!
Will: !
[There, on a large public screen that overlooked the street…]
[Gregory Graham.]
[KKKST!]
“Once again, the President as declared a country-wide state of emergency. This, based on reports of haywire robots rampaging out of control in all 52 States. I’m being told we have a comment from Gregory Graham, CEO of CherryDynamics.”
Beck and Will: WHAT?!
“CherryDyn, of course, being the world’s largest robot manufacturer. Let’s go there now, live…”
Graham: Ahem! Hello? …eh, hello…? Is this thing on?!
[The CEO seemed… panicked.]
Graham: Ah! Ahem—…My fellow Americans…in this time of crisis, we at CherryDyn would just like to express….
Graham: That this isn’t our fault!
Beck: What the—is he SERIOUS?! He's interrupting to say tha—
Graham: It’s that Dr. Blackwell—HE’S the one that’s behind all this! BLAME HIM!
Will: ….!!
[Will tensed at this in disbelief.]
[Graham then composes himself…]
Graham: Ahem—we at CherryDyn are doing ALL we can to help fix the situation… BUT IT’S BLACKWELL’S FAU—
[KKKKKKSSST!]
“Heeeelllloooo! Is this thing on?”
Beck: …Avi?
[He tries pinging his brother, but Avi doesn’t answer--not even to his comm line. Will himself is just as confused--both father and son stare flabbergasted at the helibot’s image on the news screen as he continued…]
“Ahem! And now, let’s go live to our eye in the sky, Avi, for today’s Avi News traffic report!~”
[And in a completely not so different voice–]
“Thanks, Avi! As you can see, we’ve got a few accidents eastbound on, well–”
“EVERYWHERE! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”
Beck: —?! A—Aviator—?
[He’s NEVER heard him laugh like that before—]
Will: S...Son…! No—!
“Yup, we’ve got chaos here, chaos there on this BEEEEEAUTIFUL June 21, 20XX! Here on Avi News today, we’ve got exclusive coverage on today’s top story!”
“THE END OF THE WORLD, BABY!”
Will: MIGHTY NO. 6! STOP THIS IMMEDIATELY!
Beck: A-Avi…
“Our nation is on TOTAL MELTDOWN, and Xelbot crime is on the rise! Can NOTHING stop this madness?!”
“Short answer? NO! BWAHAHAHA!”
[There was a brief pause as the crazed laughter died down unexpectedly, and the flying punster got a distant look in his eyes, which calmed down momentarily to something more like idle curiosity… before shifting to something more fitting in a cruel smirk.]
“Well, would you look at that! I got a caller!”
[The screen cuts out to another camera while Avi switched his attention to some other force, leaving Beck and Will to gaze in horror at the bird’s eye view of their city…]
Beck: Dad? W-what’s Avi DOING? Why was he all…? -Trails off-
[To that, Will had no answer… at least, no answer yet. But he could hazard a guess based on the evidence all around him, and it did NOT bode well for anyone.]
Will: We... we can’t stop now, Beck. In order to find out what exactly is going on, we need to get home—now.
[After traversing more of the war-torn street, Beck and Will were just one more block away from the entrance…]
Will: We’re almost there…
Will: …!
Beck: …? What is it, Dad?
Will: Dr. Sanda’s calling us over the comms!
[DR.WHITE] //: Sanda? What’s the matter–
[DR.SANDA] //: WHAT’S THE MATTER?!
[DR.SANDA] //: WHAT THE BLEEDING HECK DO YOU THINK IS THE MATTER?! ARE YOU OK, WILL?!
[DR.WHITE] //: …Oh, fine. More or less.
[DR.SANDA] //: ….
[DR.WHITE] //: And yourself?
[…Yep. He was his usual self, alright.
Dr. Sanda, however…]
[DR.SANDA] //: Good Lord do you EVER stop being tactless—
[…LOUD clanking noises in the background of his feed.]
[DR.SANDA] //: Oh my God—
[DR.SANDA] //: I’m less than fine–MUCH LESS! These robots gone wild are TEARING THE PLACE APART!
[DR.WHITE] //: What—in the building, too?!
[DR.SANDA] //: I’ve sealed myself in the lab—but who knows HOW long before they break through!
[DR.WHITE] //: Ah, I see. Understood. We’re already on our way!
[DR.SANDA] //: …We?
[MN.9] //: -PING!- Dr. Sanda…!
[DR.SANDA] //: …!! Beck? BECK? IS THAT REALLY YOU?!
[MN.9] //: Yeah—it’s me! I’m OK, I’m not crazy!
[DR.SANDA] //: THANK THE LORD–
[BANG!]
[DR.SANDA] //: -sCREECH–
[DR.WHITE] //: Just try to hold them off for as long as you can! We’re coming!
[Soon enough, after what seemed like hours had passed instead of minutes…]
{Sanda Enterprises}
[The front door was completely blown open.]
Will: Oh no…
Beck: I… I don’t see Call anywhere…
Will: … …
Will: Beck. We have no time to waste; calculate the fastest possible route to the lab!
Beck: Yes sir!
Beck: … …
Beck: This way!
[BWAN BWAN BWAN BWAN–]
Beck: NEVER MIND, THIS WAY–
[The elevator down to the lab was out. They would have to take the other way down.]
Will: –!!!
[He halted in his tracks as he heard something distinctly familiar: Sanda models, heading their way. Specifically, trash bots. These models were designed to recycle waste and paper; harmless enough under normal circumstances… but something had caused them to open and shut their lids with the force of a vise. Now they were on the prowl, looking for anything to chomp on.]
Beck: Uh-oh—
Will: Get back, Beck!
[The Industrial models were heading right for them, but oddly enough… their target wasn’t Beck, as evidenced by the fact that they ignored him.]
Beck: —?
Will: -Adjusts the strap of his laptop bag- Let's not question our fortune! If they aren't hostile, then we need to focus on—
[The bots made glitched beeping noises, and Will took a step back.]
Will: —!!
[He moved his hand over to the side, as if reaching for something out of instinct—but there was nothing there.
And all of a sudden, he felt very cornered.]
Will: BECK!!
Beck: !!
Will: They’re locked on to me—!
Beck: NO!
[The two of them tried to make a run for it, but the trash bots were faster than they looked. Before they could make it out of harm's way, Will tripped over some debris.]
Will: Gah—!
[He scrambled to get to his feet, moving back as quickly as he could. This brief falter had cost them dearly, though—they weren't going to make it—!]
[ANALYZING….]
[THREAT CONFIRMED.]
[EMOTION MATRIX RUNNING…]
-*-*-*-*-
Felix: Let me tell you something, Master Beck. It is your heart and your build, your purpose, to help others. That is where your greatest power, I think, will always lie.
Felix: When you truly believe in your cause, the strength comes to you.
Felix: I can tell you THAT from experience.
Beck: …R-Really…?
Felix: Of course.
Felix: And after all.
Felix: You are MIGHTY.

[ACTIVATING WEAPON SYSTEMS.] WEAPON SYSTEMS: ONLINE.]
[XEL ABSORPTION SYSTEMS… ONLINE.]
[In an instant, Beck’s arm had transformed into his default demolecularizing arm cannon–capable of breaking apart substances right down to the molecular level within a few shots.]
Beck: STAY AWAY FROM HIM!
[BLAM BLAM BLAM!]
[The Trash Bots were nailed right in the face, and soon they were…glowing. Their Xels were being broken apart, floating around them…]
[ZOOOOM!]
[ACXELARATE DASH: ONLINE.]
[A white-blue glow had enveloped Beck as he dashed forward, the Xels of the weakened robots being absorbed into his own body, seamlessly clicking into place.]
[Shocked from the sudden Xel loss…the Trash Bots shut down.]
[ABSORPTION BOOST: ONLINE.]
Beck: —!!
[A soft red glow shined around him, energy SURGING through him in a way that he’s NEVER felt before…]
Beck: Ah—
[It all seemed to pool into his arm cannon.]
Beck: …..
Beck: WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED.
Beck: -pANIC-
Beck: WHAT WAS THAT?!
Will: !
Will: Beck—did…
Will: Did you just…absorb the Xels of a weakened robot and—my goodness—assimilate them?!
Beck: I DON’T KNOW—YOU TELL ME!
Will: Alright–alright–just CALM down, Beck–breathe, breathe!
Beck: …….
Will: Beck–I DESIGNED you with this capability.
Beck: ….!! W-Wait–
Beck: …So–THIS is my…my power? My OTHER power?
Will: Yes, Beck. I designed you with THREE central powers: Xel Manipulation, Xel Transformation…
Will: …And Xel Assimilation.
Will: (But…)
Will: (This is the first time I’ve seen it…active…I hadn’t thought it functional yet…
Will: (…So why now…?)
Will: …!
Will: (Of course…)
Will: (Seeing me like this, in danger. Amidst madness and chaos, his emotional matrix must have activated his latent abilities… in an effort to protect me.)
Beck: … …
Beck: Whoooooa…
Will: …!
Beck: … …
[The glow subsided… along with the surge of power.]
Beck: —? Uh… what happened?
Will: —Ngh! I’d love to explain but we have more robots incoming!
[As they headed deeper into the building, more and more robots appeared within moments.
The security system had also gone haywire, and the very same measures used to protect them were now being used against them.]
Will: Almost there, almost there…! Hold on, Soi!
Beck: Owowowow LASERSHURT OW–
Will: …Right—the Lab is just ahead…
[DR.WHITE] //: Sanda?
[…]
[DR.WHITE] //: Sanda, are you still there?
[… …]
[DR.WHITE] //: … ….
[DR. WHITE] //: Have the robots torn you to pieces…?
[MN.9] //: DAD–
[DR.SANDA] //: Criminny! Tactful as ALWAYS, Will… -n-;;;
[DR.SANDA]//: I’m FINE, but for PETE’S SAKE, HURRY–!
[DR.WHITE] //: Don’t worry, we just need to go through the–
[There was a LOUD scream across the feeds. Not just once, but twice—a distorted cry of sorrow and pain. An angry woman’s shriek, lower in tone than his two sisters, yet all too familiar just the same…]
[B A N G.]
Beck: ?!?
Beck: What was THAT…?!
[They weren't given time to dwell on it.]
[WWRRRRRRRRRRRRRR–]
Will: —?!
[Literally CRASHING through the side wall was a huge, round robot nearly seven times Beck’s size, crushing anything underneath it’s round steel flattener…]
Will: A CherryDyn demolition unit?! How on EARTH did it manage to get DOWN here?!
Beck: Oh CRUD—
[The destructive CDN CHARGED right into Beck’s path! He dove out of the way in time, but the shock of the impact with the other wall forced the door to close… leaving Will trapped on the other side.]
Beck: DAD!
[DR.WHITE] //: I’m fine!
[DR.WHITE] //: Beck, quickly—you MUST stop it, before it destroys the whole laboratory!
[MN.9] //: M…ME?!
[MN.9] //: DAD, THIS THING CAN CRUSH ME—
[DR.WHITE] //: YOU HAVE TO TRY! SOI IS STILL IN THERE!
[DR.SANDA] //: COME ON, BECKO—DO IT! OR WE’RE ALL TOAST!
[MN.9 HAS ENTERED FULL COMBAT MODE.]
Beck: I'm so dead—
[SCANNING…]
[SCAN COMPLETE.]
[ E N C O U N T E R ]
[CDN. 502 – MODEL CODENAME: ROUND DIGGER]
[…It certainly was… fast.]
[…A little too fast.]
Beck: O-Ow—stupid wall—
[DR.WHITE] //: Your AcXelarate Dash is EXACTLY that, Beck! An acceleration! Use it wisely!
[DR.WHITE] //: You must weaken it with your weapon to destabilize its Xel before you can absorb it with your Dash!
[MN.9] //: SO I JUST SHOOT AND RUN INTO IT?!
[DR.WHITE] //: YES!
[The Round Digger reared up to charge once more—like a bull would.]
Beck: Crudcrudcrudcrud—
[WRRRRR…]
[BLAM BLAM BLAM!]
[Direct hits–but it didn’t stop the CDN from charging.]
Beck: -nOT AGAIN–
[ZOOOM!]
[…And yet another splat.]
Beck: OW—
[DR.WHITE] //: Beck—are you alr—
Beck: NO IT’S NOT WORKING—!
[DR.WHITE] //: Perseverance, Beck! Aim for its joints and head! Destabilize its Xel structure!
Beck: Aim and shoot, joints, head—
[WRRRRRRRRRRR—]
[A panel opened up on its back, revealing—
Bombs!]
Beck: –oh NO–
[Of course; it was a demolition unit!]
[BOOM!]
Beck: AAAAAAAAAAH—
[There he goes, dashing this way and that to avoid being blown to pieces!]
Beck: -SCREAMING-
Beck: DAD HELP ME—HELP ME!
[DR.WHITE] //: I can’t—! Not from here—!
[DR.SANDA] //: THE SYSTEMS ARE ALL SCRAMBLED FROM HERE, I CAN’T DO ANYTHING—!
[BOOM! BOOM!]
Beck: -I'M GONNA DIE OH MAN-
[Nine keeps shooting–but they are wild and panicked shots, some hitting their target, some missing completely.
Eventually, however…]
[ERROR—ERROR—XEL STRUCTURE UNSTABLE—]
[…The CDN’s head starting glowing purple! ]
[DR.WHITE] //: NOW, BECK!
[As soon as Beck saw it…
…He knew exactly what to do. As if it was instinct.
As if the thought was there all along.]
Beck: Here GOES!
[ZOOOM—]
[XEL ABSORBED. CDN XEL COUNT LOWERED 20%—]
[WARNING! WARNING! VIRUS DETECTED!]
Beck: –?!?
[RUNNING XELFILTER.EXE…]
[XEL FILTERED. ALL MALWARE HAS BEEN NEUTRALIZED.]
[ATTENTION: MORE XEL IS REQUIRED FOR A FULL XEL PURGE.]
Beck: (Xel…Purge…?)
[DR.WHITE] //: BECK! ABOVE YOU!
[The CDN had stopped charging—and, oddly enough—used its extending legs to grab onto the ceiling…?]
Beck: ….???
[A panel UNDERNEATH it unlocks and—]
[A HUGE high pressured blast of water SLAMMED into the Mighty Number, knocking him back into the door with a loud CLANK!]
Beck: AAGH!
[DR.WHITE] //: BECK!
Beck: Uuugh….
Beck: …Ooooowww…
[…? What’s this?
…All that did was… Just DAZE him, at best…]
Beck: That was…almost as hard as Cryo, ow…
[PSSSSSSSSSHHH!]
Beck: -gARBLING NOISES-
[DR.WHITE] //: MOVE, BECK!
[A bit shaky, Beck dashes away from the stream—]
Beck: sTOOOOOP—
[Buuuut of course, his foe didn't listen.]
Beck: (There's GOT to be an easier way to do this! C'mon, what would nii-san do—?!)
[…]
[OH! Wait—why didn’t he think of this before?! He might not have his siblings by his side—
…But he had their FORMS, right?
…Right?]
[…]
[ERROR//: MN.7 REXELECTION FORM NOT FOUND. FORM WAS ERASED AFTER HARD RESET.]
[…Wrong.]
Beck: WHAT?!
[He tried again.]
[ERROR//: MN.1 REXELECTION FORM NOT FOUND. FORM WAS ERASED AFTER HARD RESET.]
Beck: NONONO!
[ERROR//: MN.2 REXELECTION FORM NOT FOUND….]
[ERROR….]
[ERROR…]
[ERROR…]
[…Gone.
They were all gone.
He had nothing. No forms except that STUPID golden one, and what good would THAT do?!]
Beck: DAD—I CAN’T CHANGE FORMS—!
Beck: I DON’T HAVE ANYTHING TO FIGHT WITH—!
[DR.WHITE] //: YES YOU DO, BECK!
[DR.WHITE] //: You have tools of which this world—or ANY world—have only just begun to see!
[DR.WHITE] //: USE THEM!
Beck: …..
Beck: –Shoot, dash, shoot, dash–
[The Round Digger let out a deafening R O A R, charging again.]
Beck: Shoot and dash, shoot and dash—!
[Repeating this mantra, Beck circled the CDN…
They both traded blows, neither of which seemed to be giving in or showing sign of fatigue—
…But…slowly, slowly but surely—]
[XEL ABSORBED.]
[XEL ABSORBED.]
[XEL ABSORBED.]
-PING-
[XEL QUOTA ACHIEVED.]
[XEL PURGE: ONLINE. XELFILTER.EXE PREPARED FOR OVERDRIVE.]
[DR.WHITE] //: …!!!
[…A circle of white began to glow around Beck’s feet…]
[A stream of Xel floated outwards, forming a large circle along with three dots and lines—his symbol…]
Beck: Come on—
[His arms started to shine a pure white!]
[XEL PURGE INITIATED!]
Beck: NOW!
[A burst of green Xels flow out of the circle, and RIGHT back to the CDN! Rings of purged Xel encircle it, and slowly–it’s…purple, tainted Xel fades…]
[……..]
Round Digger: ….????
Round Digger: -BEEP-
Round Digger: -BEEP BEEP-
Round Digger: -CONFUSED DATA, THIS IS NOT OUR DESIGNATED AREA-
Beck: …!!
Round Digger: -DISTRESSED BEEPING-
Beck: Hey–Hey…
Round Digger: -THIS IS NOT WHERE I’M SUPPOSED TO BEEEEEEEE-
[…Beck…cautiously approaches the CDN…
Closer…Closer…]
Beck: Hey…. Are you OK?
Round Digger: -BEEEEEEEEEP!-
Beck: Hey—Hey, it’s OK…
[…Pat. Pat…]
Beck: You’re OK now, don’t worry…
Round Digger: -SAD BEEP-
Round Digger: -BEEEEEP-
Beck: ….! Uh…hey—do you think you can help me?
Round Digger: ….? -beep?-
[MN.9] //: Dr. Sanda?
[… …There was no response at first. Both Doctors were still STUNNED at what just happened.]
[MN.9] //: Dr. Sanda!
[DR.SANDA] //: …! Erm—ah—y-yes, Beck…?
[MN.9] //: You said the systems were haywire, right? So you can’t unseal yourself…
[DR.SANDA] //: Well—I… oh.
[MN.9] //: So—I guess there’s only one option, right?
[DR.WHITE] //: —! Of course! The Round Digger!
[DR.SANDA] //: W-wait—! Wait a min—
Round Digger: -PING-
Round Digger: -DIRECTIVE RECEIVED. COMMENCING DEMOLITION.-
Round Digger: -WARNING BEEPS, STAND CLEAR-
[DR.SANDA] //: -SHRIEKS, RUNS TO THE FARTHER ROOM-
[WRRRRRRRRRRRRR–]
[With one powerful charge, the CDN Demo unit reared back once more and charged into the other wall, making a hole large enough for even MIC to walk into.]
[DR.SANDA]//: Did you REALLY have to do that?! This place is falling apart enough as it—
[DR.WHITE] //: We can worry about it later! Beck—neutralize any other threats in the building while I work with Soi to get at LEAST some of those systems back online…
[MN.9] //: Yes Sir!
[DR.SANDA] //: B-b-but—! The lab is unsealed—
[DR.WHITE]//: I don’t think we have to worry about that for now.
Round Digger: -BEEEEEEP-
[MN.9] //: Yeah, you can stay down here and make sure nothing gets past you, OK? That way you don’t get hurt too. ^.^
[CDN.502] //: -BEEP BEEP, NEW DESIGNATION AREA CONFIRMED-
[DR.WHITE]//: Good, good. Be careful, alright?
[MN.9] //: Yeah. I will.
[Beck went back the way he came—through the recently re-opened door—while Will stumbled through the opening, patting the CDN on it’s side as he passed by.
It took a while to find where the other Doctor had taken cover, but eventually—]
Soi: Will!
Will: Soi!
[Without another word, Soichiro Sanda threw his arms around his best friend, quite literally giving him a crushing hug—]
Will: -Hurk—!- Soi—!
Soi: You have no IDEA how glad I am to see your face, friend—
Will: Th-the feeling is mutual, Soi, but c-could you PLEASE let me breathe—
Soi: —? Oh— OH. S-sorry, William! Eheh, excuse me—
[William White takes in a few deep breaths once Sanda lets go, once again brushing himself off—but to no avail, as his clothing was more or less ruined at this point.]
Soi: Great Ceaser’s Ghost, Will; you look like you’ve just been put through the wringer!
Will: That’s… not inaccurate, Soi: not at all…
Soi: I can only imagine—I could hear everything from down here!
Will: Ev…everything?
[He glanced around them, a concerned expression on his face.]
Will: …Did… did you hear the broadcast…?
Soi: Broadcast—?
Will: -Sighs- Right, the systems are still scrambled; you wouldn’t get anything…
Soi: —….
Soi: -Doubtful tone- Well—I… did hear…. screaming—
Will: Screaming? Well, Beck was rather sc—
Soi: No, no, not him—
“Dr. Sanda!”
[Passing through the crumbling wall, Beck reappeared. His pristine white armor was slightly singed in several places, probably from laser fire.]
Beck: Dr. Sanda—!
Sanda: Beck—! Come here, you—!
[In a well meant hug of his own, Beck latched on to Sanda’s leg, burying his face into it. Muffled cries of ‘I’M SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU’RE OK’ and 'SANDAAA’ were heard while the Doctor fondly gave Nine a noogie.]
Sanda: Ha Ha! I KNEW you could do it, Mighty No. 9!
Beck: -MUFFLED NOISES-
Will: Yes—well done, Beck. But I’m afraid we still have work to do; have the other robots been taken care of?
Beck: I… did my best; some of them went outside, but I managed to absorb most of the ones on the upper floors.
Will: That will do for now. Come on, Soi; let’s TRY and get this lab running again—
[The larger Doctor put a hand on the shoulder of his worried friend to keep him from darting off before answering an important question.]
Soi: W-Wait a minute!
Soi: I see here that BECK is functioning normally…
Soi: But what happened to the OTHER Mighty Numbers? Are they still OUT there…?
[… …]
[… … …]
Will: …Sanda…
[Will sighs and takes up a straighter posture.]
Will: Based on empirical evidence, I believe that they might be suffering from this… robot affliction that’s been going around and causing all this chaos.
Soi: W-What—?!?
Soi: You mean—Pyrogen, Cryosphere…
Will: …Yes, Soi. I…
[It almost hurt to say it.]
Will: I think they’ve been hit with a virus. That’s the only logical explanation.
[As Will brings a terminal back online, his fears are confirmed. Both of the Doctors and the lone Mighty Number present stare at the screen with equal parts dread and horror…]
Soi: No…!

Will: It’s…!
Soi: The RobotMaster® Database—we’re still connected—!
<RMDC>:> SYSTEM ERROR: DATABASE MAINFRAME NOT RESPONDING. ACCESSING BRANCH SERVER…
Will: …It seems something is wrong.
Beck: They… they didn’t get infected too, did they?
Will: I’m… not sure. (I sure hope not…) I wouldn't think that they could be affected by Xel-based viruses, but then again, we don't know much about how the virus works—and they ARE able to receive and process other data just fine…
Will: Unfortunately, we have other things we need to worry about!
[There was a stream of “SIGNAL NOT FOUND” updates… followed by two small notifications, almost as if they were an afterthought.]
[DLN-000 STATUS: LETHAL COMBAT MODE]
Will: (He’s in lethal—!)
[FMN-008 STATUS: UNAVAILABLE]
Beck: —?! Kate and Cardinal—?
Beck: Why only them? :c What about the others?
Will: -Frowns- Well, I'm not entirely sure. Kate's in England—OUR England—so that might be part of it…
Beck: But… but what about Cardinal? Do… do you think he's in trouble, or—? D:
Will: -Puts a hand on Beck's shoulder- I… I-I'm sure he'll be fine, Beck. (The system USUALLY gives an SOS cascade if they're in deep trouble.) He could just be in Lethal out of instinct, remember?
Beck: O-oh, right…
Soi: -Working at another terminal- I can try to restore the connection, but for now we’re in the dark on their side of the fence. So far all the comms are either shot or very shaky...
Soi: But we REALLY need some help…
[After a moment of tense silence and rapid typing, Soi finally gets an idea.]
Soi: -SNAPS FINGERS-
Will: ?
[Soi works away on his terminal, Will looking over his shoulder to see what he was doing. Meanwhile, Beck was still trying to contact his siblings—to no avail, of course, but it didn’t stop him from still trying.]
Soi: It’s a long shot, but while Avi is still distracted—
Will: -Somewhat curious- You have something in mind?
Soi: I’m going to see if I can contact Seijiro at the head office in Tokyo…
Will: …! Ah, yes—
Will: Your twin brother…
[Seijiro Sanda, the head and CEO of Sanda Enterprises and Technologies. No doubt he had heard of what had transpired in Titus by now…]
Soi: I just hope he’s alright. I know this whole mess only seems to be centralized here in America, but you never know…
[… … … ….]
[-PING!-]
???: {-PANICKED JAPANESE YELLING-}
[A holoscreen feed was brought up, and a man almost identical to Soi appeared on the screen, looking less than calm. The only key differences were the slightly different hairstyle and the sharp business suit.]
???: {SOICHIRO—CAN YOU HEAR ME?!}
Soi: {Seijiro–}
Seiji: {OH THANK THE STARS YOU’RE ALRIGHT—! I’ve been trying to contact you for HOURS but most of the signals and feeds are down—WILL!}
Will: -AHEM takes a moment to remember our Japanese-
Will: {I’m alright, Mr. Sanda. Please, take a moment to calm down; though we might not have much time on our hands…}
[Seiji takes out a small handkerchief to wipe his forehead a bit, taking a few deep breaths to calm himself.]
Seiji: {Yes, yes… I apologize, I was just so worried after that… broadcast…}
Seiji: ……..
[He switches to English.]
Seiji: Is it… true? Has Avi really…?
Will: … -Quietly, though still loud enough to be heard- Yes. Unfortunately so. He seems to be distracted with a “caller,” but… he will likely finish up before too long.
Seiji: Yes, yes, of course; I understand. What is the current situation?
Will: There appears to be some kind of virus outbreak that infected CherryDyn servers here in America—which in turn, infected our servers and the like. It’s causing nearly every robot to malfunction and act aggressively—even Civilian and Industrial models have been affected. The only robot that is immune to the ongoing virus is… Mighty No. 9, Beck.
Beck: …Hi, Mr. Sanda…
Will: Sadly, it… i-it affected the rest of the series. They appear to be… dispersed.
Seiji: ….
Seiji: So… even the Mighty Number line…
Will: …. Yes. They’ve… all gone somewhere else, it seems. I don’t know where they are at the moment, and some of the other numbers have no status whatsoever… such as Mic.
Seiji: …
Seiji: And… Call?
Will: I—
Will: -Blinks- ….
Will: Soi, where IS Call?
Soi: She’s in the east wing. Offline, at the moment—
Beck: Offline?!
Beck: Why is she OFFLINE?
Soi: Well, before this all started—several minutes before, in fact—
Soi: She was due for a firmware update today, so… I shut down her systems for it so it would install properly.
Will: Wait.
Soi: —?
Will: Are you saying she was in technological isolation when this happened?
Soi: In a way, yes, but… since the lab’s systems are mostly down, I can’t know for sure if she’s been affected, or even IF the firmware update completed before it all started…
Will: Hmm….
Soi: … …
Seiji: … …
Will: -Lost in thought- We’ll have to bring her back online in a Faraday cage. A sealed room, if possible. If she IS infected, Beck can bring her back to normal using his assimilation and filter program. We will definitely need her support, Soi.
Soi: I know, I know…
Beck: I can go do that with her right now, Dad. If anyone can handle Call in combat…
Soi: Hnnn…
Soi: Beck?
Soi: …If she is… not well… please be careful, she’s my little girl—
Beck: I will. Promise.
[As Beck moves away from the terminal, Soi turns back to his brother.]
Soi: Seiji…we could use all the help we can get. Can you do anything for us right now? Anything at all?
[… … …]
Seiji: …I….
Seiji: I’m sorry, Soichiro. Please understand; if things are as bad as you say they are, then….
Seiji: The Japanese government won’t let us intercede unless we know the exact CAUSE of the malfunctions, and how to combat the virus en masse.
Soi: ….
Soi: …I… I was afraid of that. -Sighs- But it makes sense…
Soi: If you send more robots overseas, THEY could get infected too—making everything even worse. And there are few enough human resources to go around…
Will: … …
Will: Just to confirm, Mr. Sanda.
Seiji: Yes?
Will: If we can isolate the cause of the robot rampage—you WILL send aid?
[Seijiro nods.]
Seiji: Absolutely. Anything we can do.
Will: Alright…
Will: And after the cause has been found, how long will that take?
Seiji: Well, even after proving things, getting into Japan will still be subject to the quarantine, since you've all been exposed to the virus—
Soi: -Groans slightly- {That takes WEEKS—}
Seiji: —but sending emergency aid FROM Japan should take less time. Likely still a few days at the very least, though I imagine that your government will be all too eager to help expidite aid once they are in a position to receive it.
Will: … >>;;; Riiight…. Might need to get Shade on that, if things are still held up in red tape by then…
Seiji: …It sounds as if you already have a plan in mind, Will.
Will: More or less.
Will: I would like to have No. 9 present as soon as he—

Soi: ?

[MN.9] //: GUYS GOOD NEWS SHE’S OK! :D
Soi: CALL—
[Theeeeere he goes!]
[CALL] //: …
[CALL] //: I detect distressed emotions in various vocal patterns of all present. Is something wrong, Dr. Sanda?
[MN.9] //: Lemmie fill you in on what’s going on, Call; it’s… not good.
[UPDATING…]
[CALL] //: … … …
[CALL] //: Analyzing….
[CALL] //: … … … …
[……]
[-PING!-]
[CALL] //: I have been informed of the current situation. I will assist in any way I can, Doctors.
Soi: Attagirl! ^^
Seiji: -Turns his attention back to Will- You were saying?
Will: -Ahem- We will be sending Beck to save all of his fellow Mighty Numbers, as he is the only combat model available to face them at the moment—
[-PING-]
[CALL] //: I am also registered as a combat model.
[.....]
[MN.9] //: Call—I’d really like for you to have my back…
[MN.9] //: …But this is WAY too dangerous and the Doctors need you here. No one can sort through data like you can, you give even AVI a run for his money.
[MN.9] //: ….Plus…you don’t have my assimilation ability.
[MN.9] //: …and I don’t want you REALLY getting infected either…
[CALL] //: … … Confirmed.
[CALL] //: I shall remain here and assist with data analysis and navigational support for No. 9.
[MN.9] //: …. Thanks, Call.
Will: Right. As I was saying…
Will: Beck will be tracking down his fellow Mighty Numbers. His assimilation ability should filter any and all irregularities in his siblings’ programming.
Will: If we can gather and study multiple samples of the virus’s coding from the Mighty Numbers themselves…
Will: Perhaps we can isolate the cause of the problem.
Will: Once we’ve identified the root of the malfunctions, we can work on some way to combat it: be it in the form of a anti-virus program, or whatever else we can come up with. Meanwhile, Soi can help repair the rescued Mighty Numbers while I study the code.
Soi: -Nods- Hmm. I’ll do what I can with the non-infected Xel we have on stock.
Seiji: ….But…
Seiji: Are you SURE you will have sufficient Xel for ALL the Mighty Numbers?
Will: We’ll just have to scrape by with what we have, and—if Beck refines his abilities, we could see about purifying any infected Xel we come across as well.
[…He paused for a moment, as if to mull over that for a second—when he remembers something from earlier.]
Will: Incidentally, I did manage to catch a bit of news on the way here. It’s something I don’t think I’ve told you yet, Soi.
Soi: …?
Will: The president of Cherry Dynamics is insisting the cause of the malfunctions is… Dr. Blackwell.
Soi: What??
Seiji: Dr. Blackwell—? The founder of modern Xel robotics—?
Soi: That’s– -sputters- –poppycock!
Soi: Dr. Blackwell may be a genius, but he can’t POSSIBLY be behind this! Not THIS time, at least—
Will: -Tersely- Soi. You must admit, there ARE similarities to his LAST plot to… shut down every robot in America!
Soi: Will—he was caught and arrested! Even Ben isn’t clever enough to pull this off from inside a maximum security prison!
Will: You shouldn't underestimate the likes of what he can do, Soi, and how little regard he has for ANYONE else!
Soi: Will. Will, listen to me—
Soi: If… if he wanted to do something… something like this, then why… why wait so long? You KNOW that doesn't make sense. From, er… from all accounts, he was… not exactly the most patient person when aggravated…
Will: … …I know, Soi. But we must consider all possibilities. And why was Graham so certain, even after—
Seiji: Will…
[Seijiro stops the two Doctors from going on, with a… sympathetic look on his face.]
Seiji: -Gently- Dr. Benedict Blackwell is the least of our worries. We need to focus on the now.
Will: … …
Will: -Calmer, now- Right. Right. I’m sorry.
[MN.9] //: (—? That was weird…)
Will: Soi, for now, you should tend to any minor injuries Beck has sustained in that last battle. I’ll sift through the data he acquired from the Round Digger Model. After that, we need to work on getting the mainframe in working order so that we can start tracking down the other Mighty Numbers.
Will: Seijiro—if you see ANY sign that the virus might jump the ocean gap, PLEASE let us know.
Seiji: Don’t worry; Japan already closed all her ports in accordance with procedure. I'm afraid that it will probably hurt us all if it stays on too long after this is over, but… it is what it is. I'll try and get in touch with someone who can give regular updates and maybe even help push through the approval to send aid, once that's possible. That's all we can do for now, though.
Will: Thank you.
Will: (I won’t…)
Will: (I won’t lose them, not THIS time...I won’t let my family fall apart again--!)
Will: Then let’s get to work.
