I kinda see it more in Cartman becoming an addict, who is controlled by it than Stan.
I headcanon him as some sort of shady business man later in life, who secretly does drugs.
Here's why:
Stan knows about his addiction problems and his familys problems, where Cartman doesn't and never learned that this is wrong, or he actually needs to learn self control.. While, I don't argue being aware of something makes you immune to addiction, it is important to do so. At the start it's essential to recognise you have a problem, so you can work on it.
Cartman doesn't think himself that his food addiction is a problem ( Maybe he does deep down), because his mother made him believe it's okay by constantly lying to him. He does not think using drugs is something you shouldn't do and is willingly to take codeine to calm him down. this post
Keep in mind, that his mother gave this to him, she would rather give her child drugs than comfort him.
You could say but Stan has depression. Yes he might have depression. But Cartman isn't necessarily mentally stable either. I would say he's way worse of than Stan. There is a possibility that Cartman is sadder than he lets on. In * Le Petit Tourette* he says he cries himself to sleep at night. Cartman has never learned to fully trust someone and open up emotionally, that's why he turns to his stuffed animals, when he's sad. There could also be Cartman filling a hole that has been missing in his life. Because he never learned to be vulnerable and has learned it to be a weakness, it could be possible for him to turn into substances for support.
Cartman's mother is someone who spoils him, disciplines him occasionally but also doesn't really listen to his problems.
I noticed whenever Cartman has a problem, he only goes to his mother, because she has an adult can to more than him. It's not for genuine comfort, it's just so she bust him out of things or get him something.
When Cartman is in need for actual emotional support where he isn't faking it, he isn't seeking for his mother but for his stuffed animals. Perhaps he learned he early on he wont get it from his mother.
Stan when he is in need for emotional support, he seeks for his parents. Before Tegridy Farms, it was actually more Randy than Sharon to comfort him. Now Sharon is more doing it. But this counts. And is so important for a child to become secure as an adult and emotionally mature.
It's more plausible for Stan to become really vary of drugs and alcohol and doesn't even try drugs at all. He knows what is fathers addictions are like and it is something he has to work on. He has learned or continues to learn healthy coping mechanism. Where I don't necessarily see the same with Cartman. I don't even think he knows how to cope healthy.
This is just a little opinion I have. I know it's a running thing of Stan becoming an alcoholic, I just want to share an other possibility with Cartman. Which also in my opinion gives more story development.
:]!

My favorite anime of all time, Futari wa Pretty Cure, is finally watchable on Crunchyroll. Yes, it was there before. But the quality was atrocious, so I'd always tell people to download the fansubs instead. Recently, though, it's gotten an upgrade so I can finally recommend the legal method as well!
Before:
After:
As you can see, it's a pretty dramatic upgrade. It still uses the same subtitles as before (although in a newer, better font) but the visuals are vastly improved.
For completion's sake, here's the Arienai Fansubs version:
In other words, if you're looking for the absolute best quality for screenshots (and IMO a better translation) then the fansubs are still the way to go, but if you just want to sit down and watch the Precure season that started it all, you can now do that without having to suffer through what genuinely looked like a VHS rip!
Please take a look and support legal Precure outside of Japan if you can! https://www.crunchyroll.com/pretty-cure
