The legend says that Xolotl (god of deformities, fire, duality, twins and more) refused to be sacrificed to Tonatiuh (the sun), so he began to run away and transformed himself into plants and other life forms. Ehecatl, that was in charge of the sacrifice of all the gods, began hunt him down. The last transformation of Xolotl was an axolotl, but he was soon found. Ehecatl finally sacrificed Xolotl by ripping out his heart.
In one of the versions, Ehecatl punished Xolotl for his cowardice and transformed him into an axolotl forever. Xolotl could never return to his original form and was stuck forever into an axolotl body.
Some Itztlacoliuhqui doodles I did this morning. It was fun to draw but also a lot of time!
