In the series both sam & max are depicted are morally ambiguous but in the fandom only max's morals are talked about in posts while sam is treated at the more lawful and calm type who only serves as a straight man to max. While their dynamics meant to contrast from each other it's not exactly correct that Sam just serves to be "the not funny one." Sam & Max is a comedy series first and foremost and should be treated as such when talking about the character. In the series Sam has the same amount of moral ambiguity as Max but it is treated really differently in the series compared to him. He is treated more lawful despite continuous times he has talked about how he and max breaks the law, even being explained in the pitch bible for the TV show that sam and max are only called the freelance police just to get away with more rule breaking. In the pitch bible it's also talked about how he has his own sense of justice that aligns with his own morality and this sense of justice is interpreted as him being lawful. So he does have principle, just not ones that go along with what is expected from society.
This wider array of emotions, sense of justice and rational leads to him being characterized into the trope of the chaotic one and the voice of reason, flattening out his character, who is intended to be a comedic one. Which it could be said that the S&M fandom doesn't care for discussing the comedy of the series in a comedy franchise, mmmm mayhaps? ;)

Kaito Kid was next on the list because the idea of "Conan going through the five stages of grief thinking his fake brother (who he didn't want to get attached to in the first place) is a thief" got to me
