Headcanon that early on in Dick's tenure as Robin, Batman gets seriously injured during patrol one night. Not enough that his life is in danger, but like, enough that he's unconscious and needs medical attention.
And after he gets him squared away, Jim Gordon sees a small, masked child covered in someone else's blood, and then his Dad (tm) instincts kick in, and he refuses to let Robin go to wherever he calls home alone. So he just... takes him back to his home.
And this can go two directions. Either
Barbara, not Batgirl yet, wakes up when her father comes home and sees a boy slightly younger than her, covered in blood, and befriends him, for sure freaking out her father but also making him incredibly worried about Robin and if he has any other friends or not.
or
Barbara, fully Batgirl, but not on patrol that night because she had a test that next day, wakes up when her father comes home, and comes face to face with her best friend in his masked alter ego, and they both have to pretend that they don't know each other for like two days, meanwhile Dick's sweating because like Holy shit, I've had sleepovers here before, whatever you do, don't act like Dick Grayson.
Either way it ends with Dick, mask still firmly in place but wearing Barbara's pajamas, and Babs fully passed out on the ground around a game of monopoly when Batman finally comes to collect his sidekick.
This experience would also make Jim Gordon even more terrified for Robin on a daily basis because before, he was sort of a shadowy, cryptic force that followed Batman around, but now Jim knows that he's just a little boy, smaller than his own daughter, that likes the same games and cartoons that Babs does, and I'm not sure he'd be able to handle that.
Ok but like- imagine Bruce Wayne deciding to become Batman at like mother fucking 15??? It would be the dumbest fucking thing ever
Imagine, Bruce after returning from patrol:
Alfred: master Bruce…homework
Bruce: I don’t need homework! Im Batman!
Alfred: Even Batman needs to do his homework!
Bruce: Hmp! *locks himself in his room and blasts my chemical romance on his speakers* nobody understands me…
Junior turns on his heels, a manic grin spread wide accross his cheeks. Scars of a grotesque smile pull in a permanent mimicry of happiness as a hysterical giggle filters through his lips.
"What do you get, when the Sun disappears?"
The captured Kryptonian blinks, "what?"
JJ's grin grows impossibly wider, "A dead Super."
Superman gulps.
Looks are exchanged amongst the league and bats, confusion marring the gazes of all but one- Batman, who watches the proceedings with a sense of dreaded resignation.
"Hello, JJ."
Joker Junior grins delightedly, "Hello Batsy!"
"JJ, what are you doing here? Could you take your pills- or at least give control back to Tim, please?"
JJ merely smiles in response, before turning to Nightwing, arms swinging widely at his side as he does. "Nighty Nighty, what do you get, When a birdie leaves the nest?"
Nightwing frowns in confusion. "What, Tim?- what's going on?" JJ giggles in response. "Wrong!!! Nighty Nighty when the birdie takes flighty, does he find accused insanity. Nighty Nighty do you like reality?" Nightwing stares, befuddled, into Tim’s manic gaze. "Tim-"
"Nuh-uh. I'm fronting now. You wanted insanity and now your wish came true- turn that frown, upside down!! Daddy does so love a smile. He cut one for me, see?" At the words, Tim gestures to his scarred face.
The assembled (captured) heroes only manage to stare in confused horror as Bruce closes his eyes in resignation.
"Junior,"
"Yes Batsy?"
"Could you let us go?"
Junior hummed, peering at Batman for a moment, before grinning again, body moving in a mockery of a fluttering bird, "What do you get, when packaged is insanity?"
Bruce looks at him helplessly, "I don't know. What?"
JJ's grin takes an increasingly sinister edge, "a birthday present." Bruce winces in response. "Ah."
A confused Green Lantern cuts in, "Bats? What's he on about?"
Bruce grunts, shifts, and then sighs. Regret tinges his voice as he speaks. "It appears... Junior is taking revenge on Tim's behalf."
Junior cackles. "Batsy, Batsy. Theres a nugget of thought after all- you should drip it till it falls..."
This is actually what the high guard has been doing for the 50 cycles I know this. And Starscream hates losing, but Soundwave can’t be bothered to do anything about that 😒 he’s like a wine mom rn, the way he’s babysitting the whole high guard too. He doesn't really play it with them cuz . It’ll be too easy with his ability, and he’d have to keep hearing everyone argue about who is what
[Dick’s Teen Titans era]
Donna: Gonna have to wash this blanket to get rid of that new smell.
Kory: *makes a note that humans prefer to mark objects with familiar scents*
—
Wally: Gotta love that new car smell.
Kory: *scratches out previous note and replaces it with a question mark*
—
Roy: Old books smell so good.
Kory: *increasingly frustrated note taking*
—
Dick: Mmm love that new book smell.
Kory: WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS?
Since we all agree that people of the Alley of Crime adore Red Hood and believe in him, I think it is time to imagine Jason in a scene similar to the one from OG Spiderman, where his identity is accidentally outted in front of crowd of people, and they all are just choose to protect him and help him out.
So maybe Gotham is facing especially nasty trouble, and vigilantes are on the receiving end this time. So maybe Jason is thrown at the dirty Alley in his part of town, wounded, with helmet flying off, and there is just a crowd of people staring as bleeds out, astonished. And Jason thinks, oh, that's the end — he can go and shoot himself, honestly, because he just failed the man rule every vigilante have: never show your face, never reveal your identity.
But people are... helping him? His eyes are half-open, breath laboured and pained, but all he hears is gentle murmuring:
'God, he is just a kid...'
'He must be younger than my son.'
'Poor child...'
He feels soft elderly hand against his cheek as someone from the crowd, an ex nurse, comes closer to bandage his injuries, while a kid, barely with the size of his helmet, brings it back, sticking out their tongue as they try to place it back on his head, to hide his face.
'It is okay,' the old woman reassures him. 'You are safe with us, son. We hadn't seen anything.'
Jason's eyes sting, because, oh.
It is his people. He loves them. He will die for them.
And they love him just as much.
He still waits for someone to out him, though. But the week ends, the villain is out of the picture, and no one says a thing. The only proof that it ever happened is civilians, who keep waving at Jason — not Red Hood, just Jason — when their paths cross somewhere in the shops or streets.
And that's how he knows that it is them; it is them, and they keep him safe as much as he keeps safe them.
Billy hasn’t quiteeee mastered flying in his regular human form yet☁️
(Continuation of my last post ⬇️)
Jason: "Hey I need some help."
Dick: "Okay, wait a second, I'm getting another call. Hello?"
Tim: "Hey Dick, don't get mad, but I need your help with something."
Dick: "One second." *returns to earlier call* "What did you do?"
Jason: "Me? It's not always me, you know--"
Dick: "Sure Jay, hold up, I'm getting another call. Hello?"
Damian: "Batgirl and I require assistance, can we use your apartment for something?"
Dick: "What did Jason do?"
Damian: "...why are you asking about Jason?"
Dick: "Because... ugh, never mind. What did you do?"
Stephanie, in the background: "What? He never asks Tim all these questions."
Tim, muffled: "He asks me all the time."
Dick: "Wait a second, why the hell are all of you together?"
Jason: "We'll tell you but you gotta open the front door first."
Scarecrow observed the third Robin crossing the fear toxin-laced streets without a mask, his expression vacant and distant. Yet, it was clear that Tim wasn't under the influence of the toxin; instead, he had mentally retreated within himself.
Scarecrow (British accent): Hey, kid you've been breathing in my fear toxin for a few minutes. I usually relish this, but you're not screaming or crying. Everything good?
Robin: My dad just died, called me to tell me he loved me... I found his bloody corpse. No time to save him. I have since accepted that life is meaningless. I have nothing to fear because what's to fear when the people you love are dead and gone... what's the point to keep going when you can give up on life?
Scarecrow (analyzing the Robin): Deep depression from the loss of a parent is typical. This sadness will pass with time. Yet, the toll it takes on his spirit may leave scars that last far longer than the grief itself.
Robin (blinking quickly): There's no passing except both of them being dead. I feel nothing. There's no joy in anything, being happy, the moments with your parents, all gone. I embrace my sadness like a long lost lover.
Scarecrow (concerned): Right, right, where's Batman? You should go with him and rest for the night.
Batman walked over to Robin and placed one of the masks on his face then turned him away to head to the car.
Batman: You can sit this one out, okay? You're going through a lot and I don't want you to go insane from the toxin.
Robin (monotone): There's toxin? I wasn't aware, my whole life is nightmare.
Robin walked away while whisper singing a jazz song his father played for him once.
Robin: My lovin' daddy left his baby again/ Said he'd come back but he forgot to say when...
Scarecrow (calling out): Hey, kid I may be clinically insane, but don't give up on life. It'll get easier.
Robin waved his hand faintly while walking through the toxin fog to find the car, but his mind would rather stay outside and inhale the toxin and if it wasn't for Batman, he'd sit on the ground and breath the fear toxin deeply into his body.
Scarecrow: You're going to give him the usual antidote, correct?
Batman (nodding): Yeah, sorry about that, he's usually... not acting like me on a bad day.
Scarecrow: Seems he lost his father in a truly horrific manner. I'm guessing, which makes it hilarious to me, but I imagine a normal sane minded person would be shell shocked after it all settled in. He masks in front of others as a defense mechanism?
Batman: Yes, he masks it well with his friends, but when he's with me... that happens and I can not handle it.
Scarecrow (crossing his arms): He's continuing to fight crime with you which is admirable. Working is better than laying around all day. Grief can hinder progress in life, so you just have to keep moving. Be there for him, in times of grief a good support team helps bring the person back to normal.
Batman: Tsk... I forget you were a professor of psychology before you went insane, uh thanks. Can I just take you down and arrest you early then?
Scarecrow: Yeah, sure mate. I saw a young man who is reeling from his father's death and while I wish him the best, that's satisfying enough for me.
Batman glared at the man and punched him unconscious.
Batman (aggravated): You had to keep being an asshole, huh? Couldn't be nice for the entire conversation? Figures.
Batman being aggressively secretive towards the Justice League is one of my favorite tropes, but it gets INFINITELY funnier when you take the younger generations of heroes into consideration.
Barry Allen? He doesn't know shit about Batman, still partially convinced he's not human, still a little bit scared to talk to him. But Wally West? That's Nightwing's best friend. He's been around Dick since both of them were kids. He's had sleepovers at the manor since he was thirteen.
I just think it would be hilarious if all of the younger generations 100% know that Batman is Bruce Wayne. They've slept at the manor, some of them have taken various Batkids to school dances, they've been offered Alfred's cooking. And all because they've gotten close to at least one Batkid and said Batkid wore Bruce down until he let them reveal their identity. But all of them manage to keep this information from their mentors. Either purposefully or completely on accident.
Then you end up with a situation where the younger generations grow up and join the League and the older members Very Quickly realize that they seem a lot more comfortable with Batman than they should be.
