The "Rey Palpatine" BS is stupid enough on its own but I hate HATE what this movie is trying to do with her parents. No matter the reason selling you kid is not something that should be shown in a positive light. TROS does just that. Rey being unfazed by the fact that she was sold as a kid is disturbing, the fact that she seems to be thankful to her parents for it is a beyond damaging messege to send.
"they sold you to protect you" might be one of the most toxic lines I have ever heard in a film. It justifies the actions of rey's perents when they LITTERLY TOOK MONEY IN EXCHANGE FOR THIER DAUGHTER. JJ redconned half of TLJ but he decided to not change the rey being sold plot line. He only added a new reason, now they did not sell her for drinking money, now they profited on her because they wanted to protect her. Excuse me, what the actual fuck??
Her parents literally subjected thier daughter to a lifetime of abuse and hunger, to child laber, to all the dangers of living alone on Jakku and took money for it. That's not a statement of parental love, that's just fucked up.
JJ could easily write that they left her on Jakku, that's all they could do before Palpatine cough them. But no, better make them find a slave owner and sell her.
And don't even get me started on the whole Unkar Platt being a "mean-spirited guardian" BS.
A mean-spirited guardian is that one uncle you have that keeps on making rude comments about you, and you kind of hate him but ultimately you know that when a push comes to shove he would go to hell and back for you.
Unkar Platt bough her, and made her work for him. She spend her whole life scavenging ship ruins in order to get food. In TFA we see that Unakr would gladly let her die of hunger if she didn't bring him new parts.
He's a slaver, he enforces child labour, he wouldn't care if rey lived or died.
REY'S PARENTS AND UNKAR PLATT ARE TERRIBLE PEOPLE, TROS TRIES TO TURN THEM INTO HEROS.
I think I realized what bothers me the most about the shows end... That it could have been the exact same ending if the whole transending thing didn't happen. For example, if you showed someone that two parties where ready to fight but someome jumped in and put some sense in them and they stop fighting and then you jump at the very last scene at the beach you can easily say that "Well now that there is no more war, they can live their life in peace" AND IT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE WITHOUT THE TRANSENDING!! GOD, REALIZING THAT MADE ME ANGY AGAIN!
We started watching the show for a group of people. The delinquents. And personaly I only cared about them (but their story included other parties too so I didn't mind them). I didn't care about the human race. I didn't give a shit if they were good or bad or idk! I just wanted my people to survive. So the whole transending thing was bulshit in my eyes. Plus if I hate anything in stories, it's aliens. These creatures/light could only be aliens so I was so dissappointed. Man, it's been less than a week and I feel like the ending never really happened. It didn't touch me at all.
Y'know when you hear someone talk about their “guilty pleasure” and how it’s always something pretty benign? Like, “My guilty pleasure is reading erotica,” or “I love to watch sappy rom-coms; it’s my guilty pleasure,” or “Netflix is such a guilty pleasure–I binge-watched that entire show last night!”
Can we stop?
There shouldn’t be something inherently guilt-worthy about reading romance novels, erotica, young adult, or any other genre. Just like there shouldn’t be an guilt about preferring one type of music, or movie, or sport, or whatever, over another.
You don’t need to feel guilty about it!
Can we, instead, use the term “guilty pleasure” for actual things we shouldn’t be doing? Like…when I eat dairy or gluten… That is 110% a guilty pleasure. I shouldn’t do it. I know I shouldn’t do it. I’m going to regret it later, but right now I’m going to enjoy the heck out of this cheesecake.
I’m tired of society telling me I should be ashamed of enjoying romance and sex and “girly” things. (Because it always seems to be those types of things that are our “guilty pleasures”) So… no, it’s not a guilty pleasure that I watch Pride & Prejudice four or five times a year, or that I devoured an entire polyam erotica series, or that I like to paint my nails, or that I listen (and sing along) to Disney soundtracks. Those are just things I like to do. There’s nothing wrong with any of them.
