a few things i love, in chronological order of how i clocked them in this scene:
fidgets/has to move while thinking
her determination! / obsession. she would rather solve the issue than let it sit while she rests. she follows through til the very end.
LOVES sharing her theories with people she trusts
has no problem manhandling the people she trusts
cares nothing for frilly, meaningless, artificial condolences, regardless of where they're from (throws JAYCE'S flowers down next to the mountain of other bouquets). gift giving is NAWT her love language
detective work is EASILY her favorite part of her job (even though that's technically not her responsibility). solving cases seems to be her favorite thing. she loves being an enforcer BECAUSE she has access to all the information that others don't have (jayce's "the hexgates???" he is not informed on the day-to-day, but caitlyn was because of her job.
methodical, organized, observant, intelligent. she's a natural detective. (i love you caitlyn)
has no problem approaching/challenging authority in the name of true justice. is unafraid of her "superiors" (marcus who is sheriff AND her boss, the council, her parents)
asks direct questions, and communicates with precise language (the "when? why?" right after realizing jayce is a councillor. she does this no bullshit, no frill communication with vi, too, in stillwater, until she realizes that vi rarely gives her a straight answer (also, that vi is maybe interested in her), so she switches tactics and joins in, eventually growing to actually cherish the fact that she doesn't have to be direct with vi. my shaylasssssssss)
again, SHE HATES APPEARANCES/FACE-SAVING/ARTIFICIALITY. she's instantly disgusted by the "ceremonial position" of being jayce's "security". if it has quotes around it, she don't want it
disgusted by her parents firing her / doing what THEY think is best for her (caitlyn hunting flashback with grayson confirms this)
has no problem delivering commands. "Get out."
her eyes dart around when she's thinking deeply
it's really not hard to see how this girl turned into "commander kiramman" in season 2! not a direct bullet-to-bullet, but:
her case-solving obsession grows to focus solely jinx. it doesn't shift. her case in season 2 is "must capture jinx", but keep in mind -- it's the exact same case as the one she is talking about here. she's been trying to prevent all these attacks (re: prevent innocent loss of life) since the beginning of her time as an enforcer. only, in s2, she now has kidnapping, her own near-murder, her mother's murder, the council's near-murder, to add to the list of crimes associated with the case. this is the biggest case/problem/puzzle of her life, and she's extremely emotional. no wonder she gets obsessed.
she won't stop until the case is solved (jinx is captured).
she lays out a methodical, detailed, plan of how she'll use her new enforcer task force.
she stands up to ambessa when she worries there is injustice, and she does so directly, using precise, direct questions and language.
she interrogates singed using the same direct communication. (later, she relishes the fact that vi is still joking with her when they reunite.)
she visits jailbroken stillwater herself because she never wanted to be a puppet, she'd prefer to always be on the ground.
her personal bounty on jinx is likely weighed down by the loss of a parent, and the anger of another (whose protective choices for cait's life were constantly resisted by caitlyn.) she probably feels remorse for the way she constantly rejected their choices, ultimately leading to her mother getting killed, when she "had the shot"
at multiple times in the second season, her eyes get dart-y/move a lot as she's processing weighty information (the iconic "THAT'S ALL IT TOOK YOU ABSOLUTE FAG").
she and vi take turns topping.
and in all, "she was doing what she thought was right", in the words of her father. yes, her rage blinded her, but ONLY IN REGARDS TO ALL THINGS JINX. she forbid the use of isolation cells, ensured the prisoners had good food, questioned why they were even there in the first place. sleeping with maddie isn't a moral/ethical decision, besides the HR implications of sleeping with a coworker. and the instant vi offered her an out from ambessa, she took it.
(her lack of regard for appearances and artificiality ......... she dgaf ab maddie i'm sorry girl ššš)
anyway pls show some respect for caitlyn's name & character. she's privileged, yes, but also morally complex (both are traits that ALL OF YOU GUYS HAVE if you just stopped to examine your own lives for ONE SECOND). i think that's beautiful, and i also think it's beautiful that they wrote a woman who experiences the entirety of rage in its most heartbreaking moments.
āI did appreciate the warmth.ā
Drawing different versions of Clue characters and giving my opinions/headcanons on them! Hereās my take on Miss Scarlett, as portrayed by the 1949 UK board game.
Firstly, hereās some canon info on this version!
Sheās mid-20s, the youngest of the suspects in this version (sheās usually the youngest, so this makes sense, seeing as itās the first official Cluedo game, unless you count Murder!).
The Cluedo fandom wiki lists her ethnicity as French + Italian, although Iām unsure if this is confirmed!
Her hair in this version is styled into victory rolls, a curling method most popular from 1940 to 1945!
Iāve given her the lead piping as a weapon, which was introduced in this game, and did not exist in Murder!
While her name is spelled āScarlettā in this game (and its US equivalent), it will change to the spelling āScarletā by the next installment.
And, my own headcanons on 1949 UK Scarlettā¦
Sheās a cis woman, and heterosexual. English and German ethnically, American nationality-wise. Her name in my mind is something like Catherine, but she goes by Kitty.
I like to imagine sheās an actress, advocating for the usage of the Transatlantic accent in film and radio. I picture this version of the game taking place in 1939, 10 years prior to release, making it set the same year as the theatre release of The Wizard of Oz. I think this movie is Scarlettās favourite for its ingenuity and beautiful imagery, despite it not having a lot of popularity as a film in its first year.
I think this gameās Scarlett has a crush on this gameās Mustard. She probably finds height attractive, since sheās a tall woman herself. I imagine 1949 Scarlett dreams of settling down with a strong patriotic āmanās manā, unlike most other Scarlett variants (this idea of mine is mostly fuelled by her victory rolls, I confess). Heās definitely oblivious to her affections, but thatās okay. Sheās also attracted to dumb men.
Her signature weapon is the lead piping, because it has no recoil, and no sharp parts to worry about accidental self-injury. Sheās very particular about her weaponry, when sheās the killer. She also hates mess, and if she can give someone brain damage or bruising with minimal external bleeding, that is certainly preferable.
If she existed in the modern day, rather than the late 30s / early 40s, her go to song would be āWildest Dreamsā by Taylor Swift (Taylorās version, of course. Scarlett isnāt an animal).
(Thank 'anons' for your messages. Iāll try to respond to you through this text: )
A key moment in Caitlynās character narrative is her āI knowāāboth its content and delivery.
The content: When Caitlyn says, āI know,ā it doesnāt just mean āYouāre right.ā It means, āIāve taken the time to think about this.ā And thinking is what Caitlyn does best. Her āI knowā conveys that she has already had this conversation with herself, over and over in her head. Sheās thought about it constantly, sheās already told herself these things, and sheās already blamed herself for them.
The delivery: She screams it with violence, and we can see this represented by the boat falling apart. Itās not just that she has thought about it; itās tormenting her. Her āI knowā is incredibly powerful because itās filled with suffering.
To me, this is as valid as an apology because asking for forgiveness is outward-facingāfocused on the other person. "Asking for forgiveness" says, āWhether Iāve forgiven myself or not, whether I feel guilty or not, itās on you to decide to forgive me.ā
But here, Caitlynās āI knowā is inward-facing. It means, āIām not asking you to forgive me because I canāt even forgive myself.ā
She knows everything youāre saying, and it torments her.
This is followed by:
"I didnāt even have time to think before they hauled her off."
This line is so telling. Everything about Caitlyn is tied to thinking and reflection.
Being a sniper means aiming and shooting. Aiming is the equivalent of thinking, and shooting is the equivalent of speaking. Everything Caitlyn does is deliberate and thought through.
This is why some people dislike her: as Iāve said before, unlike other characters, Caitlynās actions canāt be forgiven easily because she doesnāt do anything by accident.
Then we get to:
"We canāt erase our mistakes. None of us."
Caitlyn speak in āwe.ā
In the prison scene with Jinx:
"No amount of good deeds can undo our crimes."
This scene mirrors the rage she felt when she threw the boat. In this moment, sheās speaking to Jinx, but also to herself.
Caitlyn and Jinx are paralleled so many times throughout the show. Caitlyn quickly realized that, in some ways, she had become like Jinx. And so, in order to forgive Jinx, she would first have to forgive herself.
At this point in the episode, the person Caitlyn hates the most is herself.
But she no longer has the "energy" to hate, neither Jinx nor herself.
Energy comes from fuel. What she perceives as a lack of strength to keep fighting is simply the fact that the fuel that powered her hatred has disappeared. And when you stop feeding a fire, it eventually dies out. She has no energy left; she has no fuel to sustain her hatred.
It's a particular way of saying, I donāt hate you anymore, and I donāt want to hate myself anymore either, because in the end, that hatred corrupts us/everything .
In her own unique way, Jinx also says, I didnāt know your mother was there, even if it wouldnāt have changed anything. And this too is a strange way of taking a step toward the other.
We have two brilliant and intelligent women who express their emotions in unconventional ways. ----------
Thereās also a whole analysis that could be done about her concept of justice and rules, "but I donāt have the energy" to dive into that here. Still, it would only lead back to the fact that Caitlyn doesnāt see herself as the right person to free Jinx (and therefore to forgive her) because she believes she herself is beyond forgiveness.
A little card design practice. Based off the 2002 edition and Clue DVD Game designs.
4 out of 7 correct.
