That morning in 1999 ; they just found out…
First time trying a big piece on procreate, i’m glad I went for a monochrome so I could work on my (non existent) shadows skills. I don’t draw scenes like this very often even on traditional media so I’m quite happy with how it turned out.
Sorry for the angst, mental health is a sh*tshow right now 🫠 So i’m torturing my favorite characters because i’m a terrible person ✨
Sometimes, questions are kind of like butter. You've got to clarify them.
I've been wanting to take part in Fowlfest but wouldn't dare to ; I feel like I don't really belong in the Fowldom but that's a me problem. So, I've been thinking about the AU prompt ! My most beloved AU is more of a canon-divergence, but I just love to imagine how things would have turned out had Artemis gotten his memories back by himself after TEC. I've written a whole ass fanfic about this though, and it's a bit off-topic so I won't expand on that ; still it's the first thing that came to mind. BUT ! To get to the point, one thing I've been wondering about a lot lately : what if, when Artemis and Holly (and the demons) came back from Hybras, they didn't arrive three years after they went missing, but three years before ? Just like. Imagine that. To avoid causing time paradoxes, Artemis and Holly would have to hide in seclusion for a few years to not runinto their younger selves ; the good thing is, if they manage to wait it out, they would be able to reappear in Taipei right after vanishing, so Butler and the Fowl family would at least be spared the anguish. But they'd still have to hang around for about three years in a timeline where they already exist, and try not to wreck the space-time continuum. Holly would definitely want to try to save Julius from Opal, which Artemis probably wouldn't allow her to do because it would absolutely break the timeline. What if they can't resist trying to fix the mistakes of the past ? What if they decide to go back to their lives even with their other selves still being there - how would that go ? Also, I said three years, but it could be more. They could return right before the Fowl Siege, or even earlier than that ; Artemis would have a very hard time deciding whether to try and not have his father be captured by the Mafiya. Alternatively they could even appear as far as like the seventies, but that's a completely different beast of an AU altogether. Lame crackfic telenovela plot-twist in that case : Artemis II ends up being Artemis I and the universe explodes. what the hell did my brain just suggest There's also the fact they are coming back from Hybras with demons ; can the demons just join the People ? Then the whole initial plot of TLC would be very different. I guess I like this idea because it could go many ways depending on the genre you want to explore. It can be a dystopian, lovecraftian horror thriller if the timeline starts unraveling ; or a funny, crazy time-travelling adventure with many shenanigans ; but also an intimist, philosophical tale about Artemis and Holly being stuck in and out of their world, forced to live like ghosts while another version of them lives their life and makes the same mistakes they did, having no friend to reach out to but each other. It can be sad, but also wholesome - them ending up admitting that what they went through all these years made them who they are, and even when given the chance they wouldn't change anything. I don't ship them but I like that it would be an opportunity to deepen and strengthen their bond whether platonically or romantically depending on your preference.
Anyhoo, that's where I'm at. Sorry it's a bit lame and probably been thought about before :(
Oooh, Pareidolia Agent is such a nice title! What is it about?
Wee, it took me some time to find it but I'm really happy with it 😃 It's the sequel to Artemis Experiments Weird 😉 In which you will find, among many other things : - the Fairy Thief heist remastered in France, with Artemis posing as a teenage... girl (because he is my non-binary icon) - a human cult who uses the Wired through singing 🎶 - Root hugging Holly 🥰 - my take on a Banshee 👻 - Tim collaborating with the gang 👀 - Juliet being one of the main characters 💚
Been LOVING these AF daemons post by OP <3 I've been thinking about this particular post lately, here are some of my personal thoughts on deaths in the AF books with daemons attached. For TLG, I actually believe Artemis' daemon would disappear at first ; because I love this scene from The Amber Spyglass, where Lyra has to abandon Pan so she can go to the Underworld - and I feel like in this case, it would be the opposite - Artemis' daemon refuses to go with him. Just imagine Artemis, actually terrified of dying, begging his daemon to not leave him alone, and her firmly reassuring him - "remember. we will come back, we decided and promised to. so I have to stay." That would be absolutely heartwrenching (as the original scene is), but also I feel a good depiction of Artemis' resolve being stronger than death. And then, imagine all the others (Butler, Holly, the parents, everyone else) suddenly see Artemis' daemon coming back, roaming around the grave. Refusing to talk for now, but being there - alone.
The cloning I think doesn't have particular implications ; it's only a mere corporeal form for the soul to inhabit, so as long as the daemon is still there, it's okay. The scene could even be quite touching... They'd bring the clone to the daemon, she's inspect it carefully, then after a few minutes, she'd just curl up into a little furry ball on the clone's chest and wait. And he'd wake up. Afterwards, Artemis would probably be able to be separated from his daemon like the witches. Maybe the clone and the daemon would have difficulties bonding at first, but at least she'd be able to help him with his memories. As for Butler's death in TEC, it would mean twisting a tiny bit how the daemons work in HDM, but I can imagine that the daemon has a few more moments after Butler dies before completely disappearing (as if his soul tried to cling to Artemis for as long as he could before fading away). Knowing that, Artemis manages to bring him to the freezer just in time for the daemon to join Butler in the freezer and sleep with him until Holly revives them both. I wonder if it would be interesting and meaningful to have Butler's daemon, by the time Artemis manages to put him to safety, be too exhausted from clinging on the world to crawl into the freezer with his human, so Artemis has to lift her up himself. As touching another's daemon is super taboo and forbidden, maybe it would be an interesting way, similar to Butler telling his first name to Artemis before dying, to show how strenghtened their bond is now that death has threatened to tear them apart and they would not have it. Also, Butler being the vulnerable one for once, and Artemis taking care and charge of him, whatever it takes and whatever rules of the universe he has to break in the process. I don't know because in HDM it's implied that touching another's daemon has a more mature connotation, and I wouldn't want this idea to be interpreted that way. I still think it would be sweet to see Artemis caring for Butler's daemon tho.
Well, these were my ramblings x') (as for what daemon would everyone have, that's another conversation and this post is long enough, but I might expand another time)
also the idea of AF plot with daemons is kind of upsetting, like wtf happens during butler and artemis' respective deaths. does butler's daemon fade away for that time butler is dead?? or does her body remain because artemis kept his brain on ice???
and for artemis' death.... if his soul was torn from his body but remained tied to earth, what does that mean for his daemon? his body dies but his daemon remains alive and conscious??? that would be so fucked up within the lore of daemons. my fucking god. like she's a symbol of hope and certainty that artemis can be brought back, but it's also horrifying and upsetting to see her walking around like a ghost, like something reanimated and fundamentally against nature.
how do these deaths affect their relationships with their daemons? or the invisible strings between them? like, would artemis' daemon be able to travel freely apart from him after his resurrection- oh my god i just remembered the cloning thing, what are even the repercussions and implications of that
idk if it’s still your birthday where u are but happy birthday!! :D
meep meep !! thank you so much 💜
see you all in a few days ! o7
Artemis Fowl is often praised for its originality, and by that most critics are implying that it is not like a poor derivative of JRR Tolkien: a criticism that can be levelled at a surprisingly large share of the modern fantasy market. But AF actually had a surprising amount of similarities with LOTR, while not in the stylish sense that most properties use, instead in an ideological sense.
LOTR is a conservative work, with a very traditional view of man’s relationship to Nature. Despite seeming more progressive in many ways, AF has inherited/shares many of Tolkien’s views on Nature and society.
Nature is distinct, but important to “man’s” society
Different races are fundamental different
Some races are “better’ than others
Some “races’ are inherently ‘better’ at living in nature that others
Humans , when left on to their own devices will be corrupted by the world
There are distinct ideas of Good and Bad that provide all of Reality and some things tend towards good and some towards bad
Grief is the sole cause of mental illness and magic is what is necessary to cure it
AF isn’t necessarily intentionally copying LOtR in these respects: EC is after all from a similar background as Tolkien; both are white, well-off, well-educated men. Many of these views are and were completely pervasive in the cultures that these two authors grew up and wrote in. That said, the strong focus on environmentalism, or pastoralism, that is evident in both texts is something that is distinctly more pronounced from the general cultural attitudes of their respective times.
One notable element of the Conservatism of Colfer’s work (NB: only the OG AF series is being discussed in this post, not the spinoff series), is Colfer’s uncritical upholding of oppressive systems of power. Fairy society’s sexism is lightly analysed and criticized in the first book of the series, but many aspects of it’s cultural norms-- most notably it’s racism, that is the belief that each fantasy race will inherently behave differently and have some races will be “worse” than others-- are reproduced unthinkingly in fairy society, which implicitly legitimizes there validity in the real world. Holly clearly believes in elf supremacy, and believes that the over-incarceration and stigmatization of the goblins are the natural result of the goblins inherent character, rather than the result of the regressive police attitude. Holly, while being stigmatized for being a woman, still experiences privileges as an elf, and it is notable that the three female officers we see throughout the series-- Holly, Lilly and Vinyaya-- are all elves and Lilly is notably from an influential and wealthy family.
Just a quick sketch of Holly wrecking havoc on humankind and having way too much fun whilst doing so, like the little menace she is.
🥺🥺🥺 My child !!!
Fanfic of a fanfic. Inspired by Eldewind Dolly's story "Artemis Experiments Weird".

Selene was distraught. Artemis, her father, didn't care. Except this time she couldn't run away from that fact. He had said it straight to her face, with no remorse and no regret, before simply walking away. Her creator was her first bully. She had to fix this. She had to do something– anything. So she walked to his room and waited for him. She sat on the bed for a while, then read a book, then drew for a bit, then surfed the web… where was Artemis? Selene was almost beginning to lose hope, when the bedroom door opened. Artemis, Selene’s father, her creator, was standing in the doorway.
Artemis slammed the door and stormed over to Selene. She was wearing one of his mother's old dresses.
“What have you done?” he nearly shouted at her.
Selene was terrified, because she hadn't done anything. She hadn't even said a single word today! The words flowed out of her mouth before she could think about how they could be interpreted.
“Father, please! I didn't do anything, I swear. I just want you to love me! I love you so much, creator. I just wish you'd be like a real father and treat your creation right!”
The silence was deafening. Artemis's eyes were wide in anger. How dare she talk back to him? Artemis backhanded her with a surprising amount of strength, and immediately regretted it. For one, his hand hurts now. Two…he felt guilt. For the first time in a while, he felt guilt that lasted for more than just a few seconds. Selene was shocked by the expression on her creator's face, her eyes brimming with tears. Artemis then cradled Selene's head in his hands, gently caressing her hurt cheek with his thumb. He felt so bad. He kissed her cheek gently and sat down next to her.
“Selene, I'm so sorry. I don't know what got into me…”
Instead of responding, Selene simply hugged her creator and snuggled up against him, feeding on the affection.
