... There's a Artemis Fowl: Guide to the World of Fairies guidebook ? ๐ฎ WHAT
Again for the fanfiction ask thing, what is the Fragments about? :3
Fragments of Artemis Fowl is the fic I'm currently working on ! It's technically taking place right after Artemis Experiments Weird, but should be readable as a solo fic. The idea : Foaly is on a sick leave from the LEP and he's bored. So he decides to grab the (illegal) copies of Artemis, Butler, Juliet and the Fowl parents' memories he has saved from the mindwipe, and explore them to figure out how Artemis Fowl became, well, Artemis Fowl ๐ So it's a non-linear collection of one-shots exploring memories of Artemis' childhood, his parents' backstory, with Foaly's (and later Holly's) take and interpretation on the whole thing ! So far I have planned 90 chapters, crafted a timeline going back to the XIXth century, two excel docs of characters (the Fowl Manor isn't gonna staff itself ! and all the other prominent crime lords around the world !!), it's so much work but ๐ I'M ๐ HAVING ๐ A ๐ BLAST ๐ I had also made an entire doc with all the miscellaneous Fowl and fairies lore and anecdotes I could find while re-reading the books, but this one got lost in my last computer crash ๐ซ So I have to remake it from scratch at some point. Anywoo, this one is still a long way to go before it can be published, but I literally started to think about this fic when I was a wee twelve-years-old baby so I'm not gonna give it up and I'm so proud to see how far it's come already ๐
thank you @ionlymadethissoicouldleaveanask for the tag ! :D

if you enjoy dark magic, apocalypses, knights, light biopunk, lemurs, or complicated relationships, this could be the fic for you :)
@yourdeargatsby ... I'm sorry what ?! You have said too little and also too much here, I need explanations x') As for me, hmm... I sewed my own wedding dress, entirely by hand. It was dark purple, and the third thing I sewed in my entire life ^^" And it looked quite okay !! I was very proud of myself.
tagging (sorry if you've been tagged before) : @valhelos @joellalovestoread @weeinterpreter
it's so weird to me that everyone on this website is a human person outside of their weird internet niche so rb this with a random bit of your lore
Sooo ask about "Artemis Experiments Weird": is there any chance we'll see more of Selene? :3 her fate saddened me more that that of the other character... sorry for beating around the bush, I don't know how comfortable you'd be with such spoiler straight in the ask. You know what I mean, anyway :3
Thank you for the ask !! Yes if possible Iโd rather that this particular spoiler youโre referring to is kept secret ^^ As for Selene, yes you will see a lot more of her ! What the epilogue hints at is that even though Artemis wiped everyoneโs memories of everything (including her), he still told her โbut I will not forget youโ. So Selene has lost her corporeal form, but she keeps on existing as a memory in Artemisโ mind, and can talk with him like an annoying inner voice (fitting for his self-proclaimed conscience ^^). When Pareidolia Agent takes place, itโs been at least a year since theyโve coexisted like this, and they have started experimenting on whether Selene can interact with the world outside of Artemisโ mindโฆ and it turns out she can ! It costs both of them a tremendous mental effort, but Selene still has some access to the Wired, and can remotely access computing systems and simple mechanismsโฆ even, but itโs even more exerting for them both, do some form of โastral projectionโ and glitch her way out for a few moments, on a very short distance.
Now, will Selene be forever stuck as a ghost, chained to Artemisโ psyche, or will they find a way to truly bring her back - and in the meantime, how does everybody else feels about Artemis seemingly arguing with himself and somehow suddenly manifesting telekinetic powersโฆ We shall see ;) Thank you SO much for this ask @laeliana !!! If you or anyone else has other questions please please please keep them coming :D
Artemis Fowlย is often praised for its originality, and by that most critics are implying that it is not like a poor derivative of JRR Tolkien: a criticism that can be levelled at a surprisingly large share of the modern fantasy market. But AF actually had a surprising amount of similarities with LOTR, while not in the stylish sense that most properties use, instead in an ideological sense.ย
LOTR is a conservative work, with a very traditional view of manโs relationship to Nature. Despite seeming more progressive in many ways, AF has inherited/shares many of Tolkienโs views on Nature and society.
Nature is distinct, but important to โmanโsโ society
Different races are fundamental different
Some races are โbetterโ than others
Some โracesโ are inherently โbetterโ at living in nature that others
Humans , when left on to their own devices will be corrupted by the world
There are distinct ideas of Good and Bad that provide all of Reality and some things tend towards good and some towards bad
Grief is the sole cause of mental illness and magic is what is necessary to cure it
AF isnโt necessarily intentionally copying LOtR in these respects: EC is after all from a similar background as Tolkien; both are white, well-off, well-educated men.ย Many of these views are and were completely pervasive in the cultures that these two authors grew up and wrote in. That said, the strong focus on environmentalism, or pastoralism, that is evident in both texts is something that is distinctly more pronounced from the general cultural attitudes of their respective times.
One notable element of the Conservatism of Colferโs work (NB: only the OG AF series is being discussed in this post, not the spinoff series), is Colferโs uncritical upholding of oppressive systems of power. Fairy societyโs sexism is lightly analysed and criticized in the first book of the series, but many aspects of itโs cultural norms-- most notably itโs racism, that is the belief that each fantasy race will inherently behave differently and have some races will be โworseโ than others-- are reproduced unthinkingly in fairy society, which implicitly legitimizes there validity in the real world. Holly clearly believes in elf supremacy, and believes that the over-incarceration and stigmatization of the goblins are the natural result of the goblins inherent character, rather than the result of the regressive police attitude. Holly, while being stigmatized for being a woman, still experiences privileges as an elf, and it is notable that the three female officers we see throughout the series-- Holly, Lilly and Vinyaya-- are all elves and Lilly is notably from an influential and wealthy family.
@laeliana asked, and her wish is my command o7 here's a little game : can you find the two Artemis Fowl themed tattoos in this picture ? ๐ (please ignore the 17th century stays I'm working on a costume rn ๐ )
I also have a little oak acorn on my elbow, but finding a way to photograph it would have been a pain in my butt, so that's all you're gonna get ๐
Sometimes, questions are kind of like butter. You've got to clarify them.
Eheh, Iโm happy I managed to surprise you with my answer ! But out of curiosity, Iโd love to know what character you were expecting here ? :3 I didnโt have the faith to crawl out of bed to search my books, but I had noticed this discrepancy between book 1 and TAC, yes :/ Oh well, another instance of Eoin Colferโs tumultuous relationship with lore consistency ^^ I completely agree about the different treatment Artemis seems to have received from his father, itโs also my interpretation :) I just wish it was expanded more on, because this premise is so fascinating to me - if Grandfather Fowl was this much nicer with his grandson, then how did Tim feel and react about that ?! Why doesnโt he reflect more about this in TEC ?!! Why doesnโt Artemis think more about his grandfather, the stories he was told, how different or similar he was to his own father ?!!!!! GAAAAAAH this is so frustrating :โ(( As for my headcanons on master Arcand Fowl the Thirdโฆ Maybe someday ;)
๐ค Character you least understand?
Thatโs such a tricky question to answer, depending on how you interpret โunderstandโ. Thank you for asking ! After pondering for a bit, I think Iโll say Artemisโ grandfather. What I donโt understand about this person, is why we know so absolutely little about him, when he should be SO important to explain why Tim became Tim, and thus how Artemis became Artemis. The little we do know about this grandfather just feels off and weird to me. Basically, heโs only truly mentioned three times : - In book 1, Angeline mistakes Artemis for his grandfather, and talks to him extremely fondly and casually, even calling him (in the French version at least) by the most informal term possible to adress a grandparent/FIL ; indicating a very warm and soft relationship ? Though it might just be her psychotic episode distorting the actual truth of how they interacted ? - Then Tim, in TEC, claims that his father only treated him as a businessman and barely knew him as a person ; if his relationship with his father was so cold and distant, why would Angeline show this man such kindness, when we know how fierly protective she is of the ones she loves ? - And then, in TAC Artemis recalls a fond memory of spending time in his grandfatherโs workshop. Sure it might be Angelineโs father in this memory but I donโt think it is. I feel like Timโs father deserved to be a much more prominent, menacing shadow, even being long dead before the start of the first book. I would have loved to know more about him (like, I donโt know, a name would have been nice ^^โ), but thatโs also just me wanting to know more about the Fowl family in general. The good thing here at least, is that there is such little lore that it gives a lot of leeway for headcanons ๐ And oh, how many do I have about this man ๐
