On This Day; September 30th, 15 Years Ago, 12-year-old Palestinian Boy Muhammad Al-Durrah Was Shot To

On this day; September 30th, 15 years ago, 12-year-old Palestinian boy Muhammad al-Durrah was shot to death in his father’s arms by Israeli troops.

It was the second day of the Second Intifada, the father and son were caught in a cross fire and hid behind a concrete cylinder. For 45 minutes Jamal al-Durrah shielded his son from Israeli fire as several bullets narrowly missed them. He desperately waved and shouted: “Don’t shoot!” but to no avail.

Muhammad al-Durrah was shot four times and eventually slumped across his father’s legs, who was also shot and lost consciousness.

An ambulance driver tried to rescue the boy and his father but the driver was also killed, along with a jeep driver, and a second ambulance driver was wounded. Muhammad and his father laid bleeding for at least 17 minutes before an ambulance was able to pick them up.

We will never forget.

correct me if i’m wrong, but why haven’t we had any skam characters with social anxiety? i think it’s the most common thing teenagers are dealing with, and it would be nice seeing someone dealing with everyday situations from that point of view. having no friends, hiding in the bathroom, seeking validation, not being sure in themselves, not knowing how to interact with strangers, public speaking, etc. is not at all represented enough

This season is showing very well how toxic relationships can happen to any one - it can be easy to fall into when the abuser is charming, has manipulative tactics that are a trap you can fall into - where abundance of charming words and gifts makes you feel loved and taken care off but each action of the manipulator is done to their benefit, out of their selfishness - to better themselves at the expense of making their partner feel small - instead of the relationship where both are treated as equals, there is a power imbalance and shift - it can be easy to fall in but hard to get out, the abuser wants to keep feeling this surge of serotonin and power they feel when things go their way, when power is in their control, and when it is not - to find ways, out of desperation - to get the power in their hands - they are controlled by fear and in that they instilled fear into their partner...as we have seen progress from subtle signs to more obvious ones with M*quel and Nora...the abuser can be anyone- that’s the scary part, it’s not just a stranger, it can be someone you’ve known a short time or a long time -someone you find comfort in or someone you thought you had comfort in...

this season isn’t just a season of a Skam remake, not a season that comes and goes - it’s a PSA, it’s education - it’s an ongoing PSA that takes its time in telling a story that isn’t one dimensional but multilayered - multilayered in covering how the victim’s mental, physical, emotional and social health is affected, how those around them are affected, how those who have never been in a toxic relationship see what happens and the signs and constantly emphasizing that no one deserves to be treated this way to let themselves let the abuser continue to treat them this way, to not sacrifice yourself and loose yourself and that however hard and difficult - that you can get out of toxic relationship - that your strength is not defined by the abuser but by you, it is not weak to seek help, it is strong, it is strength - you are strong and not alone.

I’ve learned this and more as a viewer and as someone who’s never been exposed to a toxic relationship, and I can only imagine how inspiring and powerful this is and can be for you girls, young people, teens, adults, anyone..

So yes, this season is important, this season is valuable, this season is necessary -Nora’s story is important as is her voice - while M*quel would want her her voice faded, lowered, silenced...Nora’s voice will be louder & will be heard - because it is valid and valuable as she is in her being, her thoughts and her self..her self worth... and this is a lesson that is emphasized throughout this season, throughout Skam España

The endgame

Here is the second post of Skam España appreciation week for International Women’s Week (yes I know it’s just a day, blablabla, I turn it into a week every year). In this post I wanna focus on how groundbreaking it is to have a show say that teen girls’ friendship, that sorority, is necessary to lead a full life for any woman.

I think that the message comes across the best in Season 1, where Eva is lost because her only meaningful relationship is Jorge, I love how much she craves for friends of her own, when she stares at Inés and her friends, it’s not just regret, it’s want, she doesn’t just regret screwing things up with Inés, she WANTS friends.

We are thought from a very early age that we’ll only be complete if we find a partner (male, of course) and a family, otherwise we are useless to society, we are only here to breed to have children and be the perfect moms and wives, Disney movies, the books they make us read at school, when people ask us about our futures… It all points to the fact that we are useless without a husband and a bunch of kids and, don’t get me wrong, if you want this, that’s totally valid, I want it, maybe not the husband part of it but having a partner and a family is one of my goals in this life, but it’s not my only goal and, to society, it should be and the fact that it isn’t makes me a bad woman, conniving, twisted and mean. I’m not, trust me, but Skam España is the only show that I can think of that centres its main message around telling young girls they can be more than submissive women with a bunch of children wrapped around their skirts.

Eva was lonely with Jorge and only with her friends she found the will and the strength to be herself, to leave a toxic relationship (yes it was toxic in a different way than Miquel and Nora’s was, but it was toxic nonetheless), to smile again and to fight for herself. She’s been happy since, she’s had ups and downs like every human, but she hasn’t been as sad, as destroyed as she was in season 1 because she’s got people to go to when things get rough.

Cris wouldn’t have been able to fight for Joanna without them, every time something bad happened, she’d go to her friends and talk it through and ask for advice and they’d help her, they’d tell her they love her and that she was able to do anything and she’d believe them and go back to Joanna.

The girls love each other and give each other strength they are ENDGAME, their endgame is not Jorge, is not Joanna, is not Hugo or Alejandro or whoever Amira’s love interest ends up being, they are eachother’s endgame, their relationship helps them become better people, helps them open up their minds and their hearts and makes them braver and bolder and feel like they’ve got everything under control. And, most important, lets them fly, experiment, have different experiences, love other people, get their heart broken all of that while knowing they have a safe space to ball back onto. They can safely become fully fledged human beings and that’s the healthiest thing in the world.

Okay, so here’s my second post, I hope you’ve enjoyed it, if you have anything to say you are, as always, very welcome to say it.

One of my favorite constants this season have been the calls for Alejandro to do something, confront Miquel, fight Miquel, save Nora, and the fear that Miquel would hurt Alejandro physically, including fake spoilers that Miquel would hit Alejandro with a bottle. I love both because at no point did I think Skam España was going to indulge in either, this was never about Alejandro being Nora’s white knight on white horse, neither about Alejandro (and not Nora!) being Miquel’s victim. This season is and always was about Nora getting hurt, and Nora saving herself.

SKAM ESPAÑA T3 IS BASICALLY THE MOVIE FEAR

SKAM ESPAÑA T3 IS BASICALLY THE MOVIE FEAR

Both in the movie and the clip when the characters first meet the guys Miquel and David both act super suave and within barely a minute of talking they convince Nora/Nicole (lol didn’t even realize that connection) to go off with them. It should also be mentioned that in doing so the both girls leave their friends and go with the guy. The guy then takes them to a semi remote place basically where there are less people and they both make them seem like really put together guys and even make up false stuff to try to make the girls like them. David with his family background and Miquel possibly with the musical stuff.

SKAM ESPAÑA T3 IS BASICALLY THE MOVIE FEAR

Another big similarity is that when Nora and Nicole both bring up how late it’s and that they probably should be heading home Miquel and David both distract them Miquel saying don’t look at it, it doesn’t matter, and saying that it’s actually 9:45 while David physically turns Nicole’s watch back so she wouldn’t know the time. Both are manipulating techniques to get them to ignore the fact that it’s way too late and they should probably be heading home instead of continueing to hang out with them.

SKAM ESPAÑA T3 IS BASICALLY THE MOVIE FEAR

Miquel and David both kiss the girls without asking and both Nora and Nicole push them back and then leave to go home.

SKAM ESPAÑA T3 IS BASICALLY THE MOVIE FEAR

And then the very next time Nora/Nicole see the guys is when they show up unwarranted to their school. I should also mention at this point that both David and Miquel are older than their female counterparts and are out of high school so they have no business being there and they also found the address themselves. David and Nicole then hang out while Nora and Miquel make plans to go the musical together.

SKAM ESPAÑA T3 IS BASICALLY THE MOVIE FEAR

Okay this is going to make not a lot of sense if you haven’t seen the clip because I’m not going to go into detail about what happened in this scene because it’s a little NSFW but just know that Nicole and David are on a rollercoaster and that Nicole feels an euphoric feeling for the first time. WHICH IS SO FUCKING SIMILAR TO THE TRAILER. Because that’s basically what Nora’s saying!!!

SKAM ESPAÑA T3 IS BASICALLY THE MOVIE FEAR

Lastly stuff that could be paralleled but we don’t know yet is that later in the movie David sees Nicole hug her best friend who’s a guy (their relationship is platonic) and gets super jealous for no reason and starts to beat him up which leads to Nicole and David breaking up. Depending how closely España follows the og (which doesn’t seem like a lot) this scene could totally be the fight scene. It could play out differently but either Miquel or Alejandro could get jealous of the other and then a fight breaks out. Lastly later in the movie David actually sexually assaults Nicole which would parallel if Miquel is Nico and how he is most likely Nora’s assaulter

“It’s important to show mixed families anyway, because that’s real life. Personally, I felt so comfortable and felt very understood. There’s a misconception that I can’t relate to the quote-unquote ‘Asian-American experience’ because I didn’t grow up with an Asian mom and dad,” Lana continues. “That’s just not true. I am Asian American, and so playing a girl who is half Korean, half white, but her white dad tried really hard to connect with her mom’s heritage — that’s very familiar to me.”

I understand why people are upset that Noora got so much attention this season and why it seemed unfair to Sana that Noora was taking up so much of her story. But I think she was actually important for this season, not just because we need Noorhelm closure or because she’s one of Sana’s closest friends.  The reason why I think Julie decided to get her tangled into this Yousef situation is because she represents the cool white, Norwegian girl that Sana sometimes wishes she could be.

Don’t get me wrong, I know Sana is proud of her heritage and she’s proud to be Muslim, but a lot POC who’ve been marginalized have at some point thought about how much easier their life would be if they were just a little blonder or a little lighter or a little skinnier. That resentment Sana builds towards Noora is not just about the kiss. It’s that Noora is this pretty, skinny, white, Norwegian girl who always seems to get what Sana thinks she can’t.

Even their first conversation about Yousef had a slightly territorial tone to it. Sana says some rude things about Muslim men who date white girls but I think what she’s really saying is, “This is where I finally feel like I’m not constantly one step below you. You have everybody else in this country you could date. Why are you doing this to me?” Elias talks about how hot Noora is, the Pepsi-Max girls talk about how they’d kick the entire girl squad out except for her because she’s so pretty, and William just immediately falls in love with her. Sana sees people fall for her, praise her, and give her the benefit of the doubt all of the time. Meanwhile, Sana has to deal with racist assholes who stare at her on buses and abuse her online.

She overhears the PM girls shit on her, and then she hears them say that they’d keep Noora on because she’s so pretty. And then she walks out to see Noora making out with Yousef right after having felt like she really connected with him. And she knows they don’t have the religion barrier that her and Yousef do. It was just another humongous white slap in the face. That’s why she breaks. That’s why she gets so angry about it, and that’s why she can’t talk about it with Noora because the issue is more than just a kiss or a hook up, it’s everything Noora represents in her mind.

That’s why Noora was important this season. That’s why the first clip we see in ep6 after Sana breaks has a long, slow-motion shot of Noora’s hair flowing freely in the wind. It’s a purposeful contrast between her hair and Sana’s hijab, between the pretty white Norwegian society Sana feels she could never truly belong to and the Muslim community she’s continually harassed for being a part of.
