old man zolu and the contrast between their combat and domestic life. i adore it so dearly.
the king of the pirates and the world's greatest swordsman; something so regularly mentioned yet something i never sit with and truly dwell on how powerful that is. to be incomparable in the one piece universe, to sit atop every enemy without question, and to sit there together? that’s unquantifiably strong. powerful in the way rayleigh's name alone evokes a fear and respect that shakes whoever hears it, causes even the most spontaneous and arrogant characters' movements to halt, to re-question their decision to fight. they will be that and so much more.
but then, the domestic side. days spent in each other's arms on the sunny's deck, bedtimes spent grumbling about sore backs and muscles. reaching for reading glasses on the bedside table, zoro asking luffy to grab something from the highest cupboard because he doesn't feel like doing so himself. zolu who can no longer spend hours uncomfortably wrapped around each other or else zoro’s ankles will begin to ache unbearably, so they found new positions to accommodate it, and they wrap around each other in different ways instead. the baffling opposition, terrifying and idyllic, i can't get enough.
luffy, with salt & pepper hair and encompassing hugs that remind everyone of a bear, who could near slaughter a man with a targeted glance. zoro, with gentle peace and happiness in his eyes, who's kill count got lost in the thousands many years ago. luffy and zoro who spend their days adventuring, soft, relaxed, but they can switch so uncannily and destroy world renown figures without an hour’s planning. covered in blood and looking forward to that evening's sunset together. just so sinister and so softly sweet, they’re perfect
zoro wearing a purple sash throughout wano, then luffy wearing a purple sash in onigashima... they missed each other
i know zoro has thoughts that he doesn’t deserve everything he has, then suddenly he has a bigger and more human sized worry to think about, coming his way at approximately 50mph
idk, but this live rent free on my mind that one chapter on the manga of zoro and luffy wherein they were on the side of the sunny and suddenly luffy ask zoro where did kuma send him and they talked, even the crew were giving them space/privacy to catch up on each other. 🥹
attack dog roronoa zoro, owner monkey d luffy
animanga zoro meeting opla zoro would be so funny bc opla zoro would be like “so have you and luffy….”
animanga zoro: 🤨
opla zoro: are you serious? you’re serious. what do you think those tummy aches are, bro? what would you do if I went over and made out with—
animanga zoro, swallowing a bottle full of tums and brandishing his swords: I have no reservations about killing myself
TW: Mentions of death
"Humans are fragile things, Zoro...".
He had known that since childhood—since the day his mother was taken from him by an illness and his best friend by an accident.
There are some things in life he could never control. There are some things his strength couldn't protect.
Kuina’s death was unavoidable. There’s no man he could defeat to avenge what happened, but there is someone he could beat so that Kuina’s soul would live on.
Then he met Luffy.
Before him, he has nothing but his swords and his dream.
Luffy gave him direction. Luffy gave him companionship from his lonely journey in search of Mihawk. Luffy gave him more reason to fight—not just for his dream, but for hers too.
Luffy gave him a family.
And he would protect them. He would give everything. Anything to keep them safe.
His strength would keep them alive.
But what if he learned about Luffy’s shortened lifespan?
What now?
Luffy and Zoro have always shared the same mindset: If fate decides that it’s time to die, then perhaps it is. They aren’t scared as long as they fight for their dreams, right? RIGHT?
But he had always believed Luffy would live longer. He had made sacrifices to guarantee Luffy would outlive him. He had made sure of that!
He had always protected Luffy with his swords. And if not with swords, he would have given his life instead. His strength would keep him alive! Luffy must live!
But this… this kind of death is something his swords couldn’t reach. There was no enemy to cut down, no deal to strike, no sacrifice to make.
What now?
He couldn't save Kuina. He cannot bare not to be able to save Luffy too.
"Humans are fragile things, Zoro..."
And there are some things his strength couldn't protect.
That thought alone was terrifying.
I don't know who I'm more jealous of.
Luffy, because he has someone who is so devoted and loyal to him OR Zoro, because he gets to wake up with the literal sun smiling at him each morning.
Luffy going to Zoro after he ate his food and enjoyed the party to sleep in his arms. Luffy is a wild sleeper, so when he spreads his whole body over Zoro, Zoro just changes his position to make it more comfortable for Luffy.
Ship so good we actually kinda have "you start to see colors after you meet your soulmate" trope as a canon moment
How rare it is to find love, trust, loyalty and companionship in one person
Lying on someone is personal and I don't think Robin does personal without meaning to. You never see Sanji in her lap and we know he begs.
Franky is sleeping comfortably in her lap! I love the little sleep bubble. Look how comfortable he looks, even when being detained by an enemy. I also think he did so to protect her because they'd have to disturb him to get to her, which is cute, because she's more dangerous.
This is prior to being captured. Before they get knocked out, Frnaky presumably grabs Robin to stop her from hitting the ground, cradling her with his body. It shows him doing so in the anime. They are a couple, but Oda doesn't want to have couples in the main crew or focus on romance---but his first chapter is called Romance Dawn. And yes, I know he means the romance of adventure but come on.
platonically or romantically luffy n zoro ARE soulmates and just the first arc is enough for me bc you’re telling me luffy (who goes w the flow and finds his crewmates through his journeys) heard roronoa zoro’s name and decided “I want him on my crew” and actively sought him out? that they fought immediately in sync as if muscle memory of lifetimes together came back in an instant? that the demon of the east blue, a man so feared the entire town shakes at his name, sprawled out across from luffy at a restaurant took one look at the tiny dinghy in the harbor and laughed and hasn’t stopped laughing w luffy since? that in zoro’s highly romanticized memory of their first meeting luffy brings COLOR into his life? enough! enough!!
zoro and luffy who sit incredibly close to each other naturally: legs intertwined, backs awkwardly bent, shoulders jammed together.
if you asked either of them about it, luffy would just smile wide and inch closer again, and zoro would grunt in wordless protest to being interrupted. but the real answer is on that tiny dinghy boat, on that flimsy raft they began their journey on, sitting that close was required.
if they sat with their heads leaned together, they could stretch their arms and legs. if they laid shoulder to shoulder, their whole bodies could fit without squishing to the sides of the boat, allowing them to get a good sleep. their relationship started with sitting close and it never stopped.
maybe it’s nostalgic, maybe being so close reminds them of where it all began, where they began. or maybe they just it love it so dearly, it’s so ingrained in them that they refuse to stop. feeling most comfortable with the smell of the sea in the air and skin on skin, never getting enough of each other.
sometimes luffy stretches towards zoro, a leg interlinked with his under the dining table despite sitting two seats away, because they’ve got such a big ship now and sometimes that’s a bit much. sometimes you’ll find them in the sunny's smallest storage cupboard, notably the size of that old dinghy, to the point franky renovated it full of blankets & gentle lights, and found a new home for his scrap metal. the strawhats all wonder why on earth they’d want to sleep there but it’s the best rest either of them get so they've only ever tried to make it even more comfortable for them.
as they fling one another about, manhandle each other to safety in a battle, face back to back as they fight a hoard of marines- the warmth in their contact brings them indescribable peace, brings them back to the east blue. the feeling of home found in each other.
Zoro's official number is 1111 and Chapter 1111 of the manga is titled The Sun's Shield. Although some may argue that Zoro is Luffy's sword and Sanji should be the shield, I personally think that Zoro deserves to be called Luffy's shield too for all the times Zoro protected his Captain, whether Oda purposely named the chapter that way or not.
zoro as a mellowed old man brightens my day. him silently opening his arms for chopper and luffy to jump into whenever he sees them, drinking a little less alcohol because it seems to get to him a bit quicker these days. zoro who smiles so gently and so often.
zoro as an old man who just seeps appreciation and gratitude in his own quiet way; for the life he’s been blessed with, and for meeting luffy at that barren marine courtyard. zoro who’s fights with sanji have no bite behind them, insults ranging from ‘cook’ to ‘idiot cook’ like they aren’t just age-old nicknames. his eyes gently watching nami approach to hit him over the head, complaining with only softness as she scolds him, full of unending fondness. laughing with complete adoration as he watches usopp’s legs shake in fear, hoping they never have to be apart and thanking their fates that they get to be together.
old man zoro who is still quiet, gruff, and rough around the edges but gosh, so soft in the middle. he looks at luffy like he strung the stars, like he always has done, but with a sweetness only age and many decades together can bring. he reaches for him often, unashamed physical contact, just because he wishes for the closeness and loves him so much. he relishes in watching chopper grow up, terrified and gleeful on the day the strawhats noticed he’d grown taller than him. zoro who still trains, god knows he won’t stop, but when robin, jinbe and franky ask if he wants to join them on the deck, he says yes instead of continuing without pause. zoro who sits next to brook and is lulled into tranquility, hearing his soft violin and noticing the brush of brook’s blazer against him.
zoro who accomplished his goal to be the world’s greatest swordsman, and doesn’t settle (never settles), but his tenseness eases. knowing his strength is unparalleled and looking around, his crew’s strength is too. he can relax, and he naps belly up with pride each passing day.
zoro who takes more naps and complains about his muscles aching because old age lets him do that, despite the fact he’s been tired and sore since he was seventeen. mellowed old man zoro, you are perfect.
Kuina would've loved Luffy.
Luffy doesn't care about gender, race, biology or any of that shit. If you piss him off, he'll tell it directly to your face. If you hurt his friends, he'll kick your ass.
You're a girl? So what? He'll punch you in the face if necessary.
Oh, you're a fishman who is known to be 10x physically stronger than an ordinary human? Biologically impossible to beat, you say? What a lame excuse. You hurt his navigator. You're done for.
Kuina would've loved Luffy.
If Kuina says to Luffy that her dream is to become the World's Greatest Swordsman, Luffy wouldn't laugh at her or judge her like her father or all the other adults do. He would've smiled brightly. He would've cheered her on! He may even think she's cool!
Oh, if only you could have met him, Kuina. Zoro muses as his gaze falls on the sword that holds both his and her dreams together.
If only you had met him. I know you would have loved him too.
And Zoro knows, deep in his heart, she wouldn't mind that their dreams are now tied to Luffy's as well.
zoro was so funny for being like actually not only would I follow my captain to hell but now I’m the king of hell. suck it
Soulmates (n.) - being dumb as fck together even when you're not around each other.
Ughhh... Please don't take his swordsman away from him
zoro unlocking conquerors/supreme king haki while having a flashback about luffy, explaining him as the reason he did so, was insane narratively.
zoro’s devotion is as unquestioned as humans’ need for oxygen, his loyalty is as sure as the need for ground beneath our feet. but to place luffy at the center of even his willpower and ambition, that’s something.
supreme king haki is an unteachable, one in a million power that’s tied with having ‘kingly’ qualities. but zoro doesn’t want to be a leader, he relishes in following. he states, with a picture of luffy in his mind, luffy commenting that he needs no less than the world’s greatest swordsman, that he made a promise. his promise to kuina and luffy is at foundation of his drive.
zoro’s supreme king haki does not stem from the ambition of a king, it comes from wanting to be his king’s very best soldier. he wants to be the greatest, and he wants to be no less than that for luffy. a king, sure, but in the way that a king would answer to a god.
when asked “so you intend to be a king, then?” zoro’s initial instinct was simple, “what?” because that had never even crossed his mind. but he agrees shortly after, with the image of luffy in his mind, “that’s right.” and he became the king of hell, serving a god of the sun.
zoro doesn’t have ambition to conquer, not in the same way luffy does, but he wants to conquer whatever stands in luffy’s way. his ‘kingly’ attributes are accelerated by devotion, like a king would devote his life to his country, his everything. while becoming the world’s greatest swordsman is a convoluted example of a king, sitting atop a throne of symbolic power, i think it’s more accurate to call what zoro unlocked ‘supreme soldier’ haki. ‘conquerors’ haki in the way a marshal would lead an army for his king, and not the king himself. conquering the battlefield as a victory for not only himself, his ambition interconnected with others (those he loves).
i don’t mean to diminish zoro’s ambition, to be the world’s greatest swordsman is a king in itself and that should be recognised. but nothing can detract from the fact that as he unlocked this power, the power of ultimate will, his mind was full of luffy and his smiling face. luffy has always and will always be at the base of zoro’s goal, since the day he met him. becoming the world’s greatest swordsman was no longer solely tied to kuina but now equally his captain, who could have no less than the world’s greatest swordsman.
and what an interesting development we saw happen in front of us. comparatively, the reason for every strawhat’s dream is born from their past, but we witnessed the reason behind zoro’s dream evolve in present time. he no longer strives for kuina alone. he will be a king, because it is what luffy needs as well. he will be the world’s greatest swordsman because he’s got a promise to keep to his captain and his best friend.
a one in a million power, unlocked as a result of a promise. zoro’s devotion is indescribable, his loyalty and his love is quite literally one in a million. if not even rarer as we have never seen an instance of supreme king be activated for someone else. i cannot articulate the beauty of it
Another Frobin idea . Enjoy
It was a quiet night. Straw Hats were playing a game where they shared thoughts about each other. When it was Nami’s turn, she smirked at Robin.
"Hhm, lets see...I could see Robin with an elegant, strong guy at her side," she smiled.
Robin smiling, sipping her tea, calmly corrected her. "Not elegant, no. I'd prefer a... super one."
Silence. Then—
"EH?!?" Usopp choked.
Nami turned to Ussop"You owe me 50 berries"
Brook let out a playful "Oh yohoho".
Sanji collapsed dramatically.
Zoro scoffed half asleep"Tch. Figures."
Luffy pointed laughing. "THAT'S FRANKY!"
Franky froze, his face turning red. "W-Wha—me?! I mean i am Super but-"
Robin simply smiled. "Yes, you are."
That shut him up instantly.
The crew erupted into laughter, while Franky tried to play it cool. Grinning the whole time.
Luffy and Zoro arguing reminds me of bickering between old married couples.
Here's Luffy scolding his husband again for being such an ingrate. Zoro haven't you learned from Whiskey Peak?
And also, come on Luffy, listen to your man 🙄
This is like calling your husband, but he doesn't hear you because he's too focused on watching his favorite sports game.
How many times do you think Zoro lost him in their previous lives?
This is a married couple. Just look at them they have been married for decades now, and they are gonna make it everyone's problem.
zolu being married feels right on the basis that luffy is selfish/possessive and zoro is prideful alone.
luffy likes having things, he’s wonderfully selfish, he could be nothing other than the captain of a ship. he would call zoro ‘husband’ one time and never stop because, yes, zoro is his husband.
and of course, zoro is his swordsman, his first ever crew mate, but there’s something that makes him feel perfectly content when calling him his. additionally, luffy’s possessiveness paired with zoro’s elation to be his, to worship and follow him. zoro himself would feel delighted to be wanted by his captain so completely, and luffy would bask in that.
and then zoro would reciprocate, not calling luffy his husband out of harmless possessiveness but out of pride. because what is zoro if not too proud to admit to weakness, vulnerability? what is zoro if not in a clamber for ultimate strength, to be best, to never lose again?
zoro being able to call luffy his husband with a puffed chest, because yeah. his husband is the king of the pirates by the way; stronger, kinder and cooler than anyone. his pride in his captain is unparalleled, to zoro there is nothing that nears his perfection. and that’s all his. he’s so proud to be loved by him, to love him; that’s his husband.
it’s funnily sweet how their pride and selfishness appease one another, intertwined so perfectly that they soothe each other’s nagging feelings by simply being themselves and being together. husbands and soulmates
(tiktok link)
Yeah... it's them
Zoro is even the green frog in an another universe wut
The whole way down to fishman island, zoro and luffy are attached at the hip and eagerly attempting to show off their cool new moves to eachother and i think that’s neat.
zoro and/or luffy being given a norse funeral, sent out to sea on a flimsy dinghy boat. everything ending exactly how it began
Zolu spend the entire day getting Valentine's couple specials at restaurants like free desserts and drinks
