The so-called paradox of freedom is the argument that freedom in the sense of absence of any constraining control must lead to very great restraint, since it makes the bully free to enslave the meek. The idea is, in a slightly different form, and with very different tendency, clearly expressed in Plato. Less well known is the paradox of tolerance: Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. — In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. We should claim that any movement preaching intolerance places itself outside the law, and we should consider incitement to intolerance and persecution as criminal, in the same way as we should consider incitement to murder, or to kidnapping, or to the revival of the slave trade, as criminal.

Most people have not received any education about what consent is, what it looks like, or how to do it. This needs to change.

Education about consent is sexual assault prevention.

Hulu’s newest cartoon is a lesbian fairytale for children — and its shattering conventions

Rosaline follows a young maiden on her trip through the woods to deliver a basket of treats to her sweetheart. It’s standard fairytale fare, in all ways but one: Rosaline’s sweetheart is a woman. The cartoon, which debuted in the midst of LGBT Pride Month, is the second queer love story brought to Hulu.

it is very very important for boys to know that:

you’re allowed to express your discomfort and hurt

you’re allowed to speak up and defend yourself

your emotions are valid

you’re not a bad person

you’re not ugly

you don’t have to laugh at sexist jokes just because everyone is laughing

you’re not inferior to girls

you are loved

the stereotypes that mainstream media portray you as are untrue

only you know what it’s like to be you, everyone else is just looking in from the outside

you’re not a bad person, and people are going to try and make you feel like you are, but you’re not

The Luminous Haze That Obscures Our View Of The Constellations - Light Pollution -is One Of The Most

The luminous haze that obscures our view of the constellations - light pollution -is one of the most prevalent forms of environmental alteration. Its impact is felt across a swath of life from the migration of sea turtles to the circadian rhythm of humans.

A new atlas of light pollution created by an international team of scientists reveals just how pervasive this artificial glow is. The atlas shows that more than 80% of the world and more than 99% of the U.S. and European populations live under light-polluted skies. The Milky Way is hidden from more than one-third of humanity, including 60% of Europeans and nearly 80% of North Americans.

Mercury Is Officially “out” Of Retrograde! Know What That Means? That The Planet Doesn’t Appear

Mercury is officially “out” of retrograde! Know what that means? That the planet doesn’t appear to move backward in the sky due to our motion relative to the “backdrop” of space, because that’s what retrograde notion is – an optical illusion.

So, observers from our past who knew nothing of celestial mechanics and orbital motion (let alone that we are among billions of other solar systems in the universe) perceived Mercury’s odd “movement” as some kind of foreboding communication from the cosmic beyond which indicated a disturbance of reality, rather than consulting (and trusting) an actual astronomer on this “phenomena”.

Still blaming Mercury retrograde for your problems? Congratulations, you’ve managed to remain ignorant after nearly 500 years of scientific progress.
