Chapter 4

No one is immune to propaganda

The summer sun blazes through the window of your room. You roll over and turn the aircon on. July is approaching quickly, and time feels like it’s been flying by. Your doctor's appointment went well, and he put you on a whole vitamin regimen to help with the baby’s development. You still face bouts of morning sickness, but it’s less severe than before—probably since you’re no longer going through withdrawal from your medication.

All in all, your body is healing, and the baby is growing more and more each day. Your headaches have gone away as well.

You get out of bed to use the bathroom and shower. As you stare at your naked body, you notice how your stomach has grown ever so slightly. It’s uncomfortable to see, but thankfully you can still hide your stomach with your clothes. If anyone asks, you can just chalk it up to gaining weight from being sober for the first time in over a year.

Toshinori bought a plot of land and hired a company to begin building a new house. The location is closer to your work, and there’s a good school nearby. It’s the kind of thing new parents dream of. It feels surreal. It should be your dream too, but it's all moving so quickly it doesn't even feel real.

After your shower, you scroll on your phone. You’ve spent so long avoiding the news, but curiosity finally gets the best of you. 

“Asuka: Friend or Foe? A detailed look into the villain's history”

You translate the article into English to understand it better.

“Asuka from the League of Villains is a mystery that the world hopes to solve. A young woman born over 300 years ago traveled through time and space through a whirlpool personality incident. Adopted by the infamous villain, All for One, she takes on a new name and identity, but how involved is she with the villain? How did an innocent young woman turn into something so evil?

“Sources say she stole more than one-million-yen worth of items. Others claim that she was a key reference in multiple murders by the villain's ally, Dabi (also known as Todoroki Touya). She was an active member of the Paranormal Liberation Front for several months leading up to its disbandment and eventual arrest.”

You click out of the defamatory article. Well, that’s just an obscenely dramatic misrepresentation of everything.

The whirlpool personality incident must be a mistranslation of the Vortex Quirk Incident, and you wonder what it’s actually being referred to in your home country.

There’s a video some ways down about Tomura. You hesitate to click on it, but you decide to, against your better judgment.

“Who was Shigaraki Tomura?” the reporter asks a random person on the street.

“He was really terrifying. It’s good news that he was defeated,” one guy says. A bubble pops up next to him stating: office worker, 35.

The video cuts to two young women with the bubble stating: students, 21.

“Um, my friend got killed by that vicious murderer! Honestly, it’s the worst! And now my life is totally messed up,” one of them says.

The other chimes in, “Also my house was destroyed.”

The video cuts to an old woman. “I always wonder why they couldn’t have stopped him sooner.”

The video cuts again to another young man in his thirties. “Everyone thought that freak was just some punk at first. No one ever thought he’d actually be a threat—”

You click out of the video. Yeah, that’s enough of that nonsense. No wonder Toshinori and Detective Sato wanted me to stay away from the news—the news sucks balls.

A separate headline catches your attention: “Blood Banks Scramble to Secure New Supply”

Well, that’s interesting… You click on the article.

“Blood banks around the Tokyo Metropolitan area have faced a shocking loss of supply over the past few weeks. Detectives have been working on the case of the missing bags, but so far nothing has come up. Specialists are wondering if this is an inside job and if these hospitals can even be trusted.

“One woman states, ‘I’ve been donating blood every six months for three years. This is the first time this has happened. How am I supposed to keep donating when it keeps going missing?’

“Central Hospital has been the hardest hit, with several liters of blood from various donors lost. The city is in dire need of a blood supply as many people are recovering from the scourge of this archvillain.” 

You muse to yourself, these translations are really bad. I should practice reading Japanese more…

There’s another headline that seems much less drastic that catches your attention: “Heteromorphs Rally to Ban Exotic Animal Cafes”

You click on the article and attempt to read it in Japanese.

“At Central Hospital during the largest villain attack in the country many heteromorphs together for better change rallied. Now they continue the [...] fight. Many heteromorphs together exotic animal cafe ban rally. The gathering for the ban called because [...] heteromorphic humans [...]. 

“‘We exotic are not!’ one protester said.”

Toshinori’s voice calling for you pulls your attention away from the phone. Quickly saving the article to read for later, you meet him in the living room where he’s sorting through the day’s mail.

“It’s from the immigration office.” He hands you an envelope with your name on it.

You peel it open, and a little plastic ID card falls out. You pick it up, staring at it.

“Yagi Asuka,” you read. “Oh my god it’s official.”

“It’s official,” he repeats in awe, as if he wasn’t pulling some strings behind the scenes to get the documents to pass anyway.

A surge of emotions overwhelms you. You should be excited—this marks a new beginning for you. This officially sheds you of your old villain name and legally grants you one that will surely help you with building your new life. This is the opportunity to give your unborn child the name that’s built off of a legacy—a very wealthy and notable one. You should be grateful to have this name.

Yet, it’s still the name of Tomura’s sworn enemy. 

So easily, the guilt returns with its unyielding grip, twisting your stomach into knots.

“You don’t seem happy,” he notices.

“I feel weird.”

“I know it’s strange right now, but I’m sure the feeling will pass.”

I’m not so sure about that, you want to say as you hold the little ID in your hand. “Yeah, I’m sure it will.”

”…You think she’d be into spit roasting?”

Dabi’s grin widened as he eyed you up now. You looked so sad and anxious as you sat with the friends that hadn’t protected you last night.
