The Hamsa/hand Of Fatima Is An Ancient Protection Symbol Thought To Provide Defense Against The Evil

The Palestinian friend I am raising money for is a labor activist, it's how we met. We had already been grad students in the same department for a couple years but we never talked until our school went on strike and he recruited me to help. I've seen him do some really amazing work with his activism, both for our workplace and for other causes.

Because of this, and because pretty much every union person I know is involved in Palestine activism too, I have made a few versions of the black cat/wildcat (an old labor symbol) wearing a keffiyeh for my fundraiser. Here's my new white on black one (found here):

Stickers of the wildcat designs have been a big hit in my immediate social circle since it's such a popular symbol here. Here are my older wildcat designs, which are better for stickers (found here and here):

As usual EVERYTHING I RAISE is for my best friend to support his friends and family in Palestine and around the rest of the Levant who are being hurt by the genocide in Gaza, the attacks in the West Bank and the collateral damage in surrounding countries.

I drew a journalist for my fundraiser. I'm not very experienced at drawing people but I'm practicing, I've wanted to add a journalist for a while since they've become such an important symbol for Palestine. Found here, mostly intended for stickers.

As usual ALL PROCEEDS from my shop are for my Palestinian best friend to help him support his friends and family in Palestine and around the rest of the Levant who are being hurt directly and/or financially by the attacks on Gaza, the raids and economic devastation in the West Bank and the collateral damage in surrounding countries. EVERYTHING I EARN from my shop is for my best friend, a Palestinian grad student living in America. The money is sent home to support his friends and family in Palestine and around the rest of the Levant who are being hurt directly and/or financially by the attacks on Gaza, the raids and economic devastation in the West Bank and the collateral damage in surrounding countries. For example a recent month's worth of sales went to a relative of his in Lebanon who is helping feed and shelter displaced people.

We should hear back from the student we're trying to help by the end of this week hopefully, to know if their family figured out passage to Egypt (money is not enough, they have to get approved to leave and I think whatever agency they were originally working with stopped functioning so they're trying to figure it out now). If that works out the money will probably go there, if not it will continue to fill more basic food needs for his other loved ones for now. His friends and family are generally spread through Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon and all over the West Bank, so they are varying levels of in need/accessible for help/contactable, the situation is always in flux and we send the money where it seems to be needed most each month.

I realize the template I use for these posts has gotten pretty formulaic recently and I haven't updated on how my friend himself is doing in a while, so here's a little update. He's still quite sad of course but he seems to be managing it better. It looks to me like he's put a little weight back on. He's going to start seeing a therapist soon which is a huge step for him, it's something he was very resistant to for many months. He's been regularly hiking again which is something that was a huge part of our friendship before the war that he was too sad to do much of for a long time. He's also still doing amazing things with his research and is on track to graduate on time with at least one very early post doc offer already (and he's been a wonderful mentor to the undergrads in his group throughout everything). I'm very proud of him. He's very touched by all the support and kind messages he's received from all of you!

Trying something a little different today, here's my first attempt at pixel art. The design can be found here, it was made with stickers in mind but it is available on a lot of products.

Palestine Sunbird

As usual ALL PROCEEDS will go to my Palestinian best friend to help his loved ones through this war and help his girlfriend afford to join him in America. He is the sweetest person in the world (and a truly brilliant scientist) and he deserves to be able to focus on grad school as best he can through this awful genocide without financial stress on top of the emotional toll. I just added a few new versions of my Palestine sunbird:

The Palestine sunbird is a beautiful little passerine found around parts of the Middle East and Africa. They look somewhat like giant hummingbirds (though that is entirely convergent evolution, hummingbirds are actually in the same clade (Strisores) as potoos and frogmouths and stuff, which I find very surprising). These little guys were adopted as Palestine's national bird in 2015. I run a fundraising shop where I sell Palestine related designs and all income goes to keeping my best friend's family safe. My friend graciously agreed to model the gym shirt I got him from the shop:

The left is the product mockup, the right is my friend (cropped to protect privacy of course). It's still a little wrinkly from the package here but I think it turned out nicely. The printing is pretty light and thin which I guess is unsurprising for a stretchy exercise shirt, I imagine it will be heavier on the standard clothes. He says it's comfortable and it held up through our workout with no issues.
