Here's Another Sample Of Things From The Fundraiser (shirts, Stickers, Pins, Notebooks).

This poem, If We Must Die by Claude McKay was written during the Red Summer, 1919. It has since been adopted to represent many groups facing persecution. I pair it here with a field of poppies and a faint keffiyeh pattern, emblematic of the Palestinian struggle. I may make a more elaborate version in the future, I have some ideas. For now, this is available on stickers, shirts, prints, etc.

As usual, ALL PROCEEDS from this are for my Palestinian best friend, to help his girlfriend afford to join him safely in America and to help his friends and family in Palestine and around the rest of the Levant who are being hurt directly and/or financially by the attacks on Gaza, the increasing Israeli raids in the West Bank and the collateral damage in surrounding countries. Palestine Designs

My best friend is an absolutely brilliant scientist and all around amazing person. He genuinely tries to help everyone he meets. He'll interrupt a lunch to go buy lunch for the homeless people too. He's been involved in activism for more causes than I can count, often for things (like LGBTQ+ issues) that don't affect him personally, just because it's the right thing to do. He takes care of everyone else even when he doesn't have much for himself.

He is Palestinian, and a lot of his friends and family all around the Levant are being hurt either directly or financially by the war. Those of you who have been following this account know that for a little over a week now I have been adding Palestine related designs to my Redbubble shop. ALL PROCEEDS from these will go first and foremost to helping his girlfriend afford to join him in America safely, and after that helping his other loved ones weather this war.

We should hear back from the student we're trying to help by the end of this week hopefully, to know if their family figured out passage to Egypt (money is not enough, they have to get approved to leave and I think whatever agency they were originally working with stopped functioning so they're trying to figure it out now). If that works out the money will probably go there, if not it will continue to fill more basic food needs for his other loved ones for now. His friends and family are generally spread through Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon and all over the West Bank, so they are varying levels of in need/accessible for help/contactable, the situation is always in flux and we send the money where it seems to be needed most each month.

I realize the template I use for these posts has gotten pretty formulaic recently and I haven't updated on how my friend himself is doing in a while, so here's a little update. He's still quite sad of course but he seems to be managing it better. It looks to me like he's put a little weight back on. He's going to start seeing a therapist soon which is a huge step for him, it's something he was very resistant to for many months. He's been regularly hiking again which is something that was a huge part of our friendship before the war that he was too sad to do much of for a long time. He's also still doing amazing things with his research and is on track to graduate on time with at least one very early post doc offer already (and he's been a wonderful mentor to the undergrads in his group throughout everything). I'm very proud of him. He's very touched by all the support and kind messages he's received from all of you!

This line is from the song يا بحرية (Ya Bahriya) by Marcel Khalife. The friend I am fundraising for loves this song and this is his favorite line. It does not come across in English very well, it roughly translates to something like "The sea has risen, the sea is crying, tears are complaining the heart is speaking". You can listen to the song here, it's very pretty.

I took a vintage ornamentation and turned it into a Palestinian flag for my fundraiser. The design can be found here.

The immediate area around where she is from has been fairly secure recently. We're really hoping it stays that way. It will be sad to see her go, he has been noticeably less depressed with her here. She has been a great comfort to him.

I just added a third simple watermelon design to my fundraiser (edit of open source material again), found here. As usual ALL PROCEEDS are for my Palestinian best friend, to help take care of his loved ones. He'll donate any his family doesn't need to the charities he works with.

Also this is not related to the shop, but my friend and I are both STEM grad students and our department is getting increasingly involved in Palestine activism. To our fellow grad students, please check out my last post about campus activism, and please check out these examples of statements from grads at the Goldman School of Public Policy and the UCSC Astronomy Department. You can do something like this at your school too!

I'm currently very worried about escalation in Lebanon and the impact that could have on the family he has there who have so far been relatively safe. Hoping things stay under control there. He will donate anything his family doesn't need to the Palestinian charities he works with (he's such a sweet person, he's involved in so much charity work for so many different causes, Palestinian and otherwise). I drew a journalist for my fundraiser. I'm not very experienced at drawing people but I'm practicing, I've wanted to add a journalist for a while since they've become such an important symbol for Palestine. Found here, mostly intended for stickers.
