I am a haneyo. As much as sea is my life, I cannot be not scared of it. Not when it has taken so many of my people. Not when I have lost my best friend to the sea

I don't get why people are purposefully ignoring the queer undertones of The Summer Hikaru Died for the sake of other's liking it.

Don't worry, they don't feel anything towards each other! They say, in order to encourage people to read it. I mean what???

Yes, it's not a love story but. I'm so tired of seeing comments on social media putting down Yoshiki's feelings and development thorough the manga saying that he doesn't feel anything, that his feelings are not important, that it's just horror and that's it. There's no way some people lack this comprehension skills.

Y'all can't just ignore Yoshiki was born and raised in a small village in the middle of nowhere and how being different led him to feel like shit. And that that's one of the topics of the manga, it's explicitly showed. And it is completely OK to have this side of the narrative while being a psychological horror story, yk? No need to erase it.

He's gay, get over it. He's a teen, feels ashamed and lost, he feels trapped in this village, he's troubled, he's different and he's invested in closing paranormal holes with the monster who took over his dead best friend's body, aka TheEntity™, and a spiritual grandma for the sake of the world. It's just queer stories don't always need to be about romance.

The Summer Hikaru Died (anime adaptation) is going to test people's literacy and we all know it's not going to end well. Specially when we're used to see queer couples being fetishized in japanese media.

I'd say this is what media needs. More stories like this one. Romance is not the plot, but feelings still matter for it to exist and develop.

Anyways, don't lose energy trying to tell people and engaging in fights on tiktok comments. Just enjoy that this beautiful manga is getting an adaptation!! I personally love it and I'm waiting for the seventh volume to release <3

Read the manga, it's absolutely beautiful, the art is on point. The whole process of Yoshiki seeing 'Hikaru' (the thing) instead of Hikaru his dead bestie is amazing. It's so well written.

Lying on his back with one arm behind his head, his face was more peaceful than she had ever seen it before. His lips were slightly parted in rest and in his other arm laid a tiny sleeping body, curled up against his father’s right side. Watching her husband and son, Ino couldn’t help but melt at the sight.

As quietly as she could, the blonde tip-toed to the side of the bed beside her son’s form. She sat gently, careful not to disturb the tranquil pair as the mattress shifted under her weight. With soft fingers, she reached out to pull the three-year-old’s thumb out of his mouth, pausing briefly when he stirred in his sleep. She chuckled to herself when her eyes traveled to Inojin’s other hand which tightly clutched a paintbrush, the item much too large in his toddler-sized grasp. He was truly just like his father.

When the thought crossed her mind, Ino’s eyes fell upon Sai’s face. His eyes were open now as he tenderly watched his wife and child.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you,” Ino whispered, barely audible.

“Don’t worry, beautiful. I was already awake.” His voice came out even quieter than hers as their eyes met.

Even after all these years, the sound of his nickname for her still made her chest flutter in excitement and glee. As the blush formed on her cheeks, she moved to gently caress his face, running her fingers lightly across his brow bone and tracing a line down to his jaw. His left hand that was beneath his head moved to clasp hers. In a smooth motion and with his eyes closed, he brought her palm to his lips, giving it a sweet kiss, before pressing it back to the side of his face.

When he opened his dark eyes again, he was met with her light teal ones as they brimmed with tears that threatened to fall. Puzzled, he furrowed his brows and tightened his grip on her hand.

“Are you—” he swallowed nervously— “unhappy?”

He couldn’t force his heart rate to slow down as he waited for her reply. After torturous training that forced him to suppress any and all emotion, he still struggled to read it on others. He found it even more difficult with his wife, whose moods presented with much more intensity than he could ever muster.

“No, of course not,” Ino reassured gently, understanding painted across her face. “I’m crying because I’m happy.”

“People cry when they’re happy?”

“Yes, they do.” She softened her gaze on him, a small smile playing on her lips. “Especially when they’re really, really happy.”

He smiled at this and released her hand. Shifting slightly on the bed, Sai held out his arm to her, beckoning her to lie down beside him. With a widening grin, she quietly rounded the bed to reach his left side before climbing in and snuggling close to her husband’s chest. She felt his arm tighten around her body, his palm resting on her waist.

When she settled beside him, he tilted his chin down and planted a slow and tender kiss in her hair. He smiled when the familiar scent of flowers filled his nostrils. He found comfort in the quiet that followed and filled the room, his heart full with the feeling of his family lying in each of his arms.

After several minutes, Ino broke the silence. “You know, it’s just not fair,” she said with a pout.

He gave her a questioning look but upon realizing that she couldn’t see him—her eyes instead trained on their son’s sleeping face—he added, “What’s not fair?”

“I carried this kid inside me for nine months and he comes out looking and acting exactly like you,” she said, feigning annoyance. Truthfully, though, it filled her with joy to see her son resemble his father so much.

He chuckled and Ino thought to herself that it was one of the magical sounds she had ever heard. “That’s not true, he has your hair and your eyes. And he’s great with flowers even though he’s still so young.”

“I guess you’re right.”

Sai could hear the smile in her tone as her voice trailed off. She moved her hand from its position resting on her husband’s chest to lightly run her fingers through Inojin’s hair, stroking the blond locks that looked just like hers.

Pulling her hand away from her son, Ino closed her eyes as she laid her ear on Sai’s chest, relaxing to the steady sound of his beating heart and breathing out a content sigh. They stayed like that for several minutes, basking in the silent comfort of each other’s presence.

“How would I know when you’re happy?” Sai asked suddenly.

She propped herself up on her elbows to look at him, their eyes meeting each other.

“What do you mean?” Her head tilted slightly in confusion as she faced him.

“I mean, it’s confusing because sometimes people cry when they’re sad but sometimes they also cry when they’re happy.” His gaze steadied as he studied her features, “How would I know when you’re happy? What does your face look like?”

Her heart melted into a puddle at his question. With two hands, she cupped his face and forced him to watch her before saying, “My face looks like this when I’m happy.”

“Really? Just like this?” His voice was low, almost whispering, as his fingers absentmindedly brushed strands of hair away from her face, tucking them behind her ears. With a tender expression that Sai knows she reserved just for him, she brushed their lips together and smiled brightly.

“Yes,” she murmured. “Just like this.”

For real! There's still so much we don't know about Atsushi and he is supposedly the main character. While we do have a considerable amount of lore on him, we don't know the "how"s and "why"s. I'm not asking Asagiri for an info dump here, but after 120+ chapters we should at least have a good enough understanding of why he is who he is today. Especially after the latest bombshell reveal. Like, it's cool and all and I'm not upset about it... I just need CONTEXT! How is it possible? There has to be some reason he is "different".

All we know is he grew up at "the orphanage" and it was traumatic and played a huge role in why he is the person he is now. But HOW did he end up there? Who are his parents? What is it that makes him so special? Or maybe a little more about the orphanage director and how he knew all that he did.

Even Dazai, who is probably the character we know the most about, is still not as fleshed out as he should be, especially considering how much of the story has been devoted to his past. Yes we know his reason for leaving the PM, we know how he met Oda and that he was the person Dazai cared about most in the world. But again, there are still so many questions! How did he meet Mori and end up mixed up with the PM to begin with? Considering he was roughly 13/14 (maybe younger) when his shady activities started, how did he end up there as an actual child? Any "new" information we get about Dazai lately is just much of the same but from different POVs.

The same can be said for pretty much every character. I just feel like we should know more about them at this point. Some people say that the characters' pasts don't really matter in a story like BSD where the focus is on the present. To a certain extent I agree, I don't need to know their entire history, but knowing a little more than surface level lore helps us (the audience) understand them more, it gives us some insight. I know there is SO many fan theories and headcanons for any given BSD chara out there, some really well thought out and extremely logical stuff too! And I'm not invalidating anyone's theories and personal headcanons. That isn't what annoys me. What annoys me is that the fans are essentially writing their own stories as they would like it while Asagiri has never confirmed anything. We're basically writing a portion of BSD for him, which is just lazy writing on his part.

This is one of the main things that drags BSD down for me. It's a good story and I do enjoy it, despite my issues with how Asagiri handles the writing. BSD is good, but it is far from being "great"

(P.S. Please don't come for me, I'm not hating on anything. I'm just looking at things critically and without bias. It's the World Lit major in me talking, not cringe fail fangirl Savannah 😂)

Also where's Atsushi's backstory. HE'S THE MAIN CHARACTER.

Who are his parents? Why was he in the orphanage in the first place?

And what about the Headmaster? How much did he know about Atsushi's ability? Did he want to tell Atsushi something the day he came to Yokohama? Was his death really an accident or was he silenced?

WHY DO WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT?!

I WANT TO GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT ATSUSHI NOT READ THE TENTH LN ABOUT DAZAI

Also Where's Atsushi's Backstory. HE'S THE MAIN CHARACTER.

advice for seaside towns

bonfires might seem like a good choice, but only when you’re not alone. even though you never truly are, fires only work if you can see who’s close to you.

don’t let your brain be numbed by the constant sound of the waves. every little hitch in its rhythm is important for your orientation and safety.

that was not a seaweed that touched your foot, but if you jump, they will be offended. it’s just their way of playing with visitors. so remain calm, they will not harm you.

if you’re sleeping in a lighthouse, always lock the door to your room, specially if it is on the top floor, next to the actual light. that way it’s harder to accidentally pass through dimensions.

never ignore your gut. if you’re exiting a lighthouse or an abandoned house/ building and your stomach feels like it’s dropping to the ground, go in again, whisk in and out the door three times, then get away as quickly as possible.

german shepherds and labradors are two good breeds of dog to have, they can scare it off. the sea doesn’t like loud sounds.

never dig around too much on a natural beach. if no human comes to clean the mess afterwards, someone else will and you don’t want to see them.

if you ever find yourself alone and feeling observed, sing. sing real loud to let the waves know you’re aware they’re there. sing until you reach civilization. no person will think you crazy, they will think you lucky - if they get to see you.
