UPDATE: Dangers in North Gaza!

Our friend, journalist and photographer Mahmoud Abusalama, gives us an update about the dangers in the north of Gaza in the weeks long attack on Jabaliya refugee camp. There has been constant, brutal bombings and no water has been allowed in the North as part of Israel’s starvation campaign they induced on the people of Gaza. He himself was targeted by Israel for documenting the truth about what happens on the ground.

The situation keeps getting worse and worse for the people of Gaza and there’s no hint of stopping anytime soon. Everyday, we’re worried for our friends in Gaza and pray for this vicious onslaught to stop. Please, if you’re able, take to the streets and protest your governments for aiding and abetting the Gaza genocide, and do everything you can to help them.

Gazans continue to require basic necessities, and prices for things have only gone up. If you donate to HelpGazaChildren, Hussam sends a portion of the funds to the North to Help Mahmoud Abusalama find ways to feed the starved community of Jabaliya.

netanyahu is a scumbag and will burn in hell forever, don't get me wrong, but the idea that hamas is the good guys and they would've handed over the civillians they kidnapped and tortured and raped if only israel asked nicely is naive as hell. hamas and the israeli government+military all need to be executed by the hague. hamas are no different to the taliban, and anyone thinking otherwise is proving they haven't been listening to palestinian women or gay palestinians or non-muslim palestinians, because these groups have been speaking for decades about how brutal hamas's reign has been and how they need to be removed for liberation to ever happen. terminally online people pretend to care about palestine for social media pats on the back, but they only care about liberating palestine from israel, not about truly liberating palestinians from the undemocratic violent theocracy they're stuck living under.

On top of there not being any evidence of maltreatment of Israeli hostages, we know Hamas would release the hostages because they have done it numerous times across the years, including in the past eight months, though diplomacy, in case you just joined the conversation on Palestine.

Hamas was democratically elected, whether you like it or not. Hamas are Palestinians, and who makes up Hamas? Victims of Israeli violence. Hamas have treated the hostages in their care with drastically greater humanity than Israel ever treated Palestinian captives, a fact made evident by merely looking at pictures of the smiling freed Israeli hostages vs. the horrific state of anyone coming out of Israeli captivity. Comparing them to the Taliban, the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of terrorists, shows how much understanding you have of Muslim societies. 

On top of this, you are sending this to a Palestinian woman whose husband’s family in Gaza has lived there as Christians for generations, and guess who destroyed their oldest church? Not Hamas, but Israel. Guess who bombed and killed a number of them? Not Hamas, but Israel. Guess who caused them everlasting suffering and trauma? Not Hamas, but Israel. And guess who has displaced all of them? Not Hamas, but Israel. I can tell you right now that that they would choose to be ruled by Hamas over the fucking terrorist state that is actively seeking their annihilation.

The infantilisation of Palestinians and painting them as if they need outside help to guide their liberation is disgusting. It's not the job of non Palestinians to determine what liberation looks like for us or to map out our way towards freedom for us.

Also this rise of tumblr users determined to call all gofundme’s a scam over the smallest details is so telling of the average person’s ability to have empathy and understand the lengths a person will go to to help their family survive. Yes, Gazans are making multiple accounts, they are sending asks relentlessly, they are copying templates/formats text posts from each other, they are giving extreme and explicit details of their suffering, they are using google translate to try to reach as many people as possible, but wouldn’t you do the same if it was your family you needed for raise money for survival for? How can you not understand where they’re coming from before jumping to calling them scammers?

anyway just because I saw a different permutation of this meme I have to share literally my favourite version of it:

I got curious, so I did a bit of “research”

The most popular fic in English is an NSFW (incredibly raunchy, wow) Guardians of the Galaxy fic with 128.179 kudos.

In Mandarin, it is a mature RPF fic of the actors from The Untamed that resulted in AO3 being blocked in Mainland China. It currently has 26.916 kudos

For Spanish, the prize goes to an explicit omegaverse & mpreg The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System fic with  3.245 kudos

Indonesian gives us a BTS college AU with 1.569 kudos and French stays on the bandom vibes by giving us an explicit One Direction dystopian story. But the band rpf award goes to Filipino, with their first page (sorted by kudos) being all Kpop (ENHYPEN, EXO & SEVENTEEN) and no-fandom.

(For those curious, Korean has a low amount of Kpop rpf on their first page. I assume they publish it somewhere else)

Egyptian Hieroglyphics (which, yes, is an option on AO3) gives us a beautiful song translation with an impressive 495 kudos. I really recommend everyone check it out; it is incredible. Welsh (160) and Old English (222)  also had their most popular work have an English translation. Latin (124), on the other hand, is just fully in Latin. There are a few translations, but they are provided by other people and not the original author.

Greek has a lot of Greek political RPF. Like, a lot. 

I was incredibly surprised by the fact that you can write fanfiction in Quebecois sign language. I was not surprised at all by the fact that Sindarin was an option.

A few of the languages had their most popular stories not be in that language and just be a case of mislabelling (or, in some cases, people using less-used languages on AO3 as dumping grounds for tests or personal notes.) Also, there were a couple of languages with no stories at all. 

If you have been thinking about writing fic in a language other than English, take this as a call for action. There are a lot of people out there reading in all sorts of languages. Even in languages with only a couple kudos, those are a couple of people who are incredibly happy to find a story of a media they love in a language they love too.
