Brad Dourif movie bingo! For your thirstwatch Halloween marathon.
Don't remember whether I came up with "Dourisms" or saw it somewhere else, but there are SO MANY and so few squares on a bingo board! Reducing them to tiny phrases is another challenge; I might do some follow-up posts with gifs illustrating each column. (Surely not an excuse to dig through the media pile again...)
What are your favorite little Brad flourishes?
** Updated: Now with more bondage!
Still wringing every drop of creative energy from this Dourif fixation 💞
Tried my hand at rotoscoping this mesmerizing Miami Vice gif (from this set by @exdeputysonso):
The scornful, slouchy staredown here really gets me thinking some special thoughts. And he's doing the thing where he gets all up in someone's face, eyes drilling into theirs from inches away — which by all reports is very truly menacing, but even so...
Then there's that beautifully sleazy little outfit with the shirt and chains... I'm so weak for a well-formed neck and décolletage. (The clothes they put him in really are second to none, including ridiculous loungewear and an iconic courtroom ensemble; see this other gifset for more)
There's an added air of threat from the tiny pupils, which really brings out the cold blue in his eyes, amped up by the matching shirt.
Dropping a few individual frames below the cut...
(He looks a bit cross-eyed because he's focusing on the guy's face like 6 inches away)
The spirit I aim to carry into the world (at least with frivolous art projects)
What got you into making vintage posts?
I was wishing there was a blog where I could look at hot people and press buttons, and then I realized I could make a blog full of hot people and buttons. The vintage thing was just because I’m already into old movies and think the people in them are hot!
love too queue up some new derangement at 2am and then guess whether i'll get any sleep before it goes out 😩👌
While fawning over BD’s supernaturally gorgeous eyes, I had to pick just a few gifs to illustrate That Thing where directors highlight him from an off-angle so they seem to glow internally. You know something's about to go down when they bust out this trick.
Problem: The X-Files alone is chock-full of this effect, and there are a gajillion more from other media. So: a dedicated post!
Starting with the ole one-eye highlight — they usually pick the right one, which is a little lifted and turned (I'm calling it his cat-eye):
Cue the lightning!!!
Sometimes it makes an iridescent crescent shape. I know it's meant to be scary, but he's such a terribly pretty boy:
Getting creative with some uplighting and a rare left eye (it's nice to see her getting some attention)...
...And some more extreme angles. How does this even work?!
It's just... captivating. I'm gonna go lie down now. (Think I actually stole all the gifs from @exdeputysonso this time. I'm basically a recycler for all their hard work and tbqh I'm fine with that)
really sucks that time doesn't stop while I wait to get into the right Headspace
Process of my latest rookanis piece!
Original piece and thoughts under the cut ✨
As usual I've struggled with faces, it took a ton of attempts to get either of them right (all not included lmao, trust me, I struggled). Sometimes I overworked the rendering - most notably her hair. Chiara's hair is straight and the woman in the ref has curly hair, I kept overdoing the details in ways that didn't make sense. I wish the final result was closer to his style but alas, I can try that again in a new piece!
When I overwork pieces of a painting, I rather paint the area flat and try again from scratch than trying to fix the existing rendering. By doing it a second time I try to make each brushstroke more deliberate so that I need fewer moves to show what I want. Treat that first attempt as a test run, trust yourself that you'll do better the second time around.
